Had a delicious meal in an authentic Amsterdam eatery. Highly recommended!

Cozy old pub, relaxed atmosphere, good and friendly service. Many types of beer, the selection is huge. Also an outdoor terrace by the canal.

Ginger tea was a hit and the fish of the day (halibut) was good quality. My only problem is that the toilet is close to the eating area so the smell leaks.. Personel is quite friendly, I would go again.

A good bar without any pretension. Not too crowded. Relaxed atmosphere. Many types of beer. Cheers!

Quite bar with background music. Food is good and beers sold are sold in smaller portions. Great on colder days with a nice log burner ironically it is gas powered.

Atmosphere is nice but service wise lacks professionalism and responsibility. They charged me 30 euros more because they mistakenly kept adding drinks from other tables to my table. It was a busy day and we were 6 people on my table so I realized that after leaving the place. Of course I did not get my money back.

A charming café with excellent live jazz on Sunday afternoons. Time seems to have stood still there. Unfortunately, so did the bar staff. The four-person crew were preoccupied with other things than serving.

Amazing place to eat, drink and hang out! The waiter we had, Jason was so helpful and friendly - we had a lovely chat with him! I had the Fondue and it was absolutely delicious! There was a great selection of beers too! Best to book though, because it's popular and it was busy at 18:00, the time we booked. Would 100% recommend!

Amazing atmosphere, the jazz session on Sundays from 4:30 pm to 7 pm is definitely worth doing. A very small but cozy space.

A lovely, authentic experience in a beautiful café-bar with live music. Plenty of craft beer selection. I enjoyed the soup of the day and the bitterballen.

For sunday afternoon the bar was fully packed, and in preparation for excellent jazz music that lifted the whole experience!

A great place, the atmosphere is great whether it's dinner or lunch. The servers are lovely. The setting is intimate and traditional. I recommend the meat croquettes!

Another wonderful place! A cozy café/diner where you can always find a spot for whatever you're in the mood for. On Sundays, you can enjoy live jazz, and on Wednesday afternoons, a delicious coffee in the cozy café, with a newspaper, a book, or a game from the games cabinet. The staff is always super friendly, and I love coming here every day! The perfect spot for when you're done with your own living room.

A cozy spot on the riverbank where, if you're lucky and the sun is shining, you can enjoy a delicious beer accompanied by small snacks. Very pleasant :)

Great place with friendly staff! The mussels were delicious, some people always have something to complain about.

Three people ordered mussels. Literally 18 mini mussels and cold fries. We had four people at the table to whom we reported the issue, but they preferred to sit down. After 30 minutes, a solution was offered: fresh fries. The rest of the table had by then more than finished their meal. Not good. Amateurish. I would skip this restaurant.

A good bar to enjoy a beer with a Dutch starter. I ordered the Frikandel (sausages) and they were good. The best part was the view from the terrace.

We thoroughly enjoyed our umpteenth Engeltje. First, we had a beer and a bitterbal, followed by a delicious meal. We started with prawns à la Guus, with pastis, chili, and garlic. It came with lovely bread. Finger-licking good. Of course, we received a carafe of table water without asking. It's hard to find that in restaurants these days. The main course was the fish of the day: catfish with grilled vegetables and baby potatoes. My partner opted for fries with homemade mayonnaise. A beautifully full plate, no frills. Juicy fish, beautiful vegetables, and baby potatoes cooked in their skins—you rarely see that on the menus of the self-proclaimed restaurants that abound in the Netherlands. We enjoyed a delicious white wine with it. Top-notch food, top-notch service (they see everything!), a lovely atmosphere, and affordable! Excellent value for money. Thanks, and see you next time!

Place is nice but the staff is absolutely ruining the experience, makes me not want to go only because of how unwelcoming and rude the staff is always… maybe make some changes

A really quaint pub with lovely seating by the water both inside and outside. The wine is okay. The apple pie was delicious, but a bit too cinnamony. The restrooms desperately need to be aired out more; even though they were clean, they smelled strongly of urine. The staff were nice.

Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and attentive service. Prices are also reasonable, all in all, great.

I may have just had the best tuna melt of my life. Crisp levels - 10, generosity of jalapeños and capers - 10, lil cheese pot on the side for dunking - 10

Last Sunday, we stopped by around 20:40 (checked on my bank now) and ordered a bottle of Prosecco at the bar with 4 glasses. Paid 24 Euros, got it in a cooler and went out with 4 glasses, sat down, opened the bottle, poured in the first glass, it was with no colour nor bubbles. When we smelled it, shockingly it was water, definitely smelling toilet, we almost vomited. All 4 of us went back in, told the bartender about this, they took the glass and 3 bartender smelled it one after another, then do you know what they said? It is a water and smelling just fine! What??? 1st, it is not supposed to be water, its a freakin Prosecco! 2nd, it smells disgustingly shit, probably water from the toilet or whatever. Then she said she can give us a new bottle, we said no thank you, refund and we want to leave! Then she says, oh she can’t do that bla bla when we all started to talk again, she just went to cash register and brought 24 Euros cash. We still think how the hell this could happen, worths to be investigated. Could lead to serious health issues.

Jazz on Sunday is always a gamble. Sometimes it feels like you are stuck in an elevator with pleasant background music. Not annoying, but not special either. But sometimes, very sometimes, you are lucky. Like today at Café De Engelbewaarder. What a wonderful jazz band! We were immediately pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was good as soon as we entered at the end of the afternoon, so good that we spontaneously decided to reserve a table for dinner. After the jazz performance, the place emptied a bit (around 19:00), which caused the atmosphere to drop a little, but the food made up for everything. More than good even! What top cuisine for a café. The guinea fowl and the fish of the day were excellently prepared, really surprisingly good. All praise for Café De Engelbewaarder. We will definitely be back!

Very nice and ambience right on the canals

This place has a great mix of old school Dutch "café" vibe and tasteful modern decor. There are photograph prints pinned to the walls and there's a pinball machine (Elvira's House of Horros by Stern) that takes coins (€1 per credit or 5 credits for €4). They have a bunch of taps, and I was astonished to find that two of them were non-alcoholic! They had a 0.0 Warsteiner and a 0.5 or so IPA that I really liked. Although most bars in Amsterdam have non alcoholic bottles, and a few offer Heineken zero on tap (yuck), this is the first I've seen that has two good non alcoholic draft beers! The bartenders were really friendly and ordering a tea and "pinning" some coins for the pinball machine was no problem. I'll be back for sure!

I love this place, I come often. Unfortunately I had diner today but the fries where definitely not fresh, double fried maybe? Not shore but don’t recommend them. They have good beers and great vibe though. Will keep coming just not have dinner I guess.

Special spot all year round. Table service during the day and an enjoyable selection of regional beers on tap. In the summer months a seat on the terrace is a local highlight. In winter you can find a near the stove heater or the windows. The perfect place to spend an cozy afternoon and then get a proper meal.

I was here on a Friday evening with two girlfriends. Reservations are a must. The place was full. At the back is the dining area, to get there you have to squeeze through the bubbling crowd (on a Friday evening). The popularity of The Guardian Angel is a problem for diners on Friday evenings. During dinner we had to talk quite loudly to hear each other. Two of us had the veggie burger, the other the fish dish of the day. Food was absolutely fine. The service was also friendly and smooth. I won't come back to eat here just because of the bad acoustics. Well worth having a drink! Then you can lean a little closer to each other for a conversation ;) My review is about the restaurant as a dining option, hence the 2 stars for atmosphere due to acoustics. If you want a good conversation with a larger group, I would not recommend this place on a Friday evening.

There was a round of drinks. But then we had to leave. They didn't want to serve us anymore. “Too big a group,” was the comment. As soon as you paid, you were no longer welcome. A world of its own that doesn't deserve any attention. GaLiGrü

Cozy cafe on the canal with many locals. And there was room inside, comfortable chairs, after a visit to the theater. Unfortunately the kitchen had just closed so bitterballen was no longer possible.

Sad with the changes on tap post covid, but this place remains one the spiritual bastions of Amsterdam. May it last forever.
