De Engelbewaarder in Nieuwmarkt/Lastage

Three people ordered mussels. Literally 18 mini mussels and cold fries. We had four people at the table to whom we reported the issue, but they preferred to sit down. After 30 minutes, a solution was offered: fresh fries. The rest of the table had by then more than finished their meal. Not good. Amateurish. I would skip this restaurant.

Great place with friendly staff! The mussels were delicious, some people always have something to complain about.

A good bar to enjoy a beer with a Dutch starter. I ordered the Frikandel (sausages) and they were good. The best part was the view from the terrace.

Beautiful location, with outdoor seating overlooking the canal and inside the restaurant. Excellent selection of beers and well-prepared dishes. Very friendly staff: three girls at the bar serving drinks and the boys serving food. Very pleasant music. Worth a try and return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our umpteenth Engeltje. First, we had a beer and a bitterbal, followed by a delicious meal. We started with prawns à la Guus, with pastis, chili, and garlic. It came with lovely bread. Finger-licking good. Of course, we received a carafe of table water without asking. It's hard to find that in restaurants these days. The main course was the fish of the day: catfish with grilled vegetables and baby potatoes. My partner opted for fries with homemade mayonnaise. A beautifully full plate, no frills. Juicy fish, beautiful vegetables, and baby potatoes cooked in their skins—you rarely see that on the menus of the self-proclaimed restaurants that abound in the Netherlands. We enjoyed a delicious white wine with it. Top-notch food, top-notch service (they see everything!), a lovely atmosphere, and affordable! Excellent value for money. Thanks, and see you next time!

Place is nice but the staff is absolutely ruining the experience, makes me not want to go only because of how unwelcoming and rude the staff is always… maybe make some changes

A really quaint pub with lovely seating by the water both inside and outside. The wine is okay. The apple pie was delicious, but a bit too cinnamony. The restrooms desperately need to be aired out more; even though they were clean, they smelled strongly of urine. The staff were nice.

Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and attentive service. Prices are also reasonable, all in all, great.

I may have just had the best tuna melt of my life. Crisp levels - 10, generosity of jalapeños and capers - 10, lil cheese pot on the side for dunking - 10

Last Sunday, we stopped by around 20:40 (checked on my bank now) and ordered a bottle of Prosecco at the bar with 4 glasses. Paid 24 Euros, got it in a cooler and went out with 4 glasses, sat down, opened the bottle, poured in the first glass, it was with no colour nor bubbles. When we smelled it, shockingly it was water, definitely smelling toilet, we almost vomited. All 4 of us went back in, told the bartender about this, they took the glass and 3 bartender smelled it one after another, then do you know what they said? It is a water and smelling just fine! What??? 1st, it is not supposed to be water, its a freakin Prosecco! 2nd, it smells disgustingly shit, probably water from the toilet or whatever. Then she said she can give us a new bottle, we said no thank you, refund and we want to leave! Then she says, oh she can’t do that bla bla when we all started to talk again, she just went to cash register and brought 24 Euros cash. We still think how the hell this could happen, worths to be investigated. Could lead to serious health issues.

Jazz on Sunday is always a gamble. Sometimes it feels like you are stuck in an elevator with pleasant background music. Not annoying, but not special either. But sometimes, very sometimes, you are lucky. Like today at Café De Engelbewaarder. What a wonderful jazz band! We were immediately pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was good as soon as we entered at the end of the afternoon, so good that we spontaneously decided to reserve a table for dinner. After the jazz performance, the place emptied a bit (around 19:00), which caused the atmosphere to drop a little, but the food made up for everything. More than good even! What top cuisine for a café. The guinea fowl and the fish of the day were excellently prepared, really surprisingly good. All praise for Café De Engelbewaarder. We will definitely be back!

Very nice and ambience right on the canals

This place has a great mix of old school Dutch "café" vibe and tasteful modern decor. There are photograph prints pinned to the walls and there's a pinball machine (Elvira's House of Horros by Stern) that takes coins (€1 per credit or 5 credits for €4). They have a bunch of taps, and I was astonished to find that two of them were non-alcoholic! They had a 0.0 Warsteiner and a 0.5 or so IPA that I really liked. Although most bars in Amsterdam have non alcoholic bottles, and a few offer Heineken zero on tap (yuck), this is the first I've seen that has two good non alcoholic draft beers! The bartenders were really friendly and ordering a tea and "pinning" some coins for the pinball machine was no problem. I'll be back for sure!

I love this place, I come often. Unfortunately I had diner today but the fries where definitely not fresh, double fried maybe? Not shore but don’t recommend them. They have good beers and great vibe though. Will keep coming just not have dinner I guess.

Table had no sign with booking. They asked us to vacate the table for another couple of Dutch customers that supposedly had booked it. We asked them, they were also walk in.

Special spot all year round. Table service during the day and an enjoyable selection of regional beers on tap. In the summer months a seat on the terrace is a local highlight. In winter you can find a near the stove heater or the windows. The perfect place to spend an cozy afternoon and then get a proper meal.

I was here on a Friday evening with two girlfriends. Reservations are a must. The place was full. At the back is the dining area, to get there you have to squeeze through the bubbling crowd (on a Friday evening). The popularity of The Guardian Angel is a problem for diners on Friday evenings. During dinner we had to talk quite loudly to hear each other. Two of us had the veggie burger, the other the fish dish of the day. Food was absolutely fine. The service was also friendly and smooth. I won't come back to eat here just because of the bad acoustics. Well worth having a drink! Then you can lean a little closer to each other for a conversation ;) My review is about the restaurant as a dining option, hence the 2 stars for atmosphere due to acoustics. If you want a good conversation with a larger group, I would not recommend this place on a Friday evening.

Cozy cafe restaurant on the 1st floor. Very busy for a weekday Wednesday at 4:30 PM. So it must be good then, right? The mouse walking around was a surprise 🤣

There was a round of drinks. But then we had to leave. They didn't want to serve us anymore. “Too big a group,” was the comment. As soon as you paid, you were no longer welcome. A world of its own that doesn't deserve any attention. GaLiGrü

Cozy cafe on the canal with many locals. And there was room inside, comfortable chairs, after a visit to the theater. Unfortunately the kitchen had just closed so bitterballen was no longer possible.

Cozy cafe with good food. Went here on a Saturday evening for dinner and drinks. We were received very hospitably and shown to our table. It had been warm that day, so unfortunately it was very stuffy inside. As a starter we had the Greek salad and the beetroot with goat cheese, both fantastic! The main dish is celeriac with a portion of fries. Personally, the fries could have been a bit thicker, but they were certainly tasty. The romesco puree with the celeriac was okay, but lacked some flavor for me. An interesting dish. If it hadn't been so hot, we would have stayed for drinks a little longer. All in all, definitely recommended.

Wonderful café to come and have a coffee, beer and a ball or snack! There is always a good atmosphere, very nice service (Luce and Lies, you are the best) and the food and drinks are simply good and affordable! In short, a top café with something for everyone all day long!

I was here for their sunday jazz session and all i can say is WOW. The energy, the atmosphere, everything is just immaculate. Definitely my favorite bar in Amsterdam that i have visited so far. Also the staff are all very kind and cute!!

I went on a Sunday afternoon and loved the live jazz jam and great selections of beers! Staff was nice and the bitterballen and cheese were great too! Really recommend it

My favourite place in Amsterdam. Everyone who comes there often knows why. I avoid that area of Amsterdam like my life depends on it but for Engelbewaarder and the two bookstores on the other side of the canal, Im ready to make an exception.

Nice place to have a meeting/drink. It can be a bit noisy inside with some customers, but that is also part of the experience of this place. The elevated view on the street is an interesting sight.

Het fijnste huiskamer café van Amsterdam, op zijn best als het regent maar eigenlijk ook als de zon schijnt… de spelletjeskast stroomt over en dat is met ieder weerbericht een fijne toevoeging. Los daarvan is de bediening erg gezellig en is het menu erg uitgebreid en precies een goede balans tussen bruin café en goed uit eten voor wen schappelijke prijs. Plus bonus tip, als je optijd bent zijn er gratis eitjes te krijgen aan de bar om een goede bodem te leggen voor een biertje (of veelvoud).

Très agréable café en bord de canal, avec une clientèle très locale et une ambiance hyper détendue. Les tarifs sont vraiment raisonnables (5.50€ le demi de bonne bière) comparés à d'autres lieux à peine plus au centre. Par contre, il faudra revoir la recette de l'Irish Coffee : il était un peu trop chargé, et tout ne doit pas être mélangé au moment de servir. 😉

I wouldn't rave about this place for dinner. We had the linguini with lamb meatballs and I wasn't blown away by it. I think mixing dill and basil is maybe a bit strange. Even dill and lamb is not very traditional I think. Another friend at our table had the risotto. She pushed the greens to the side and also wasn't entirely happy with it. The final friend had the guineafowl and he seemed to enjoy his meal :) if you can get a table on the terrace then it's lovely being on the canal.

Hartstikke gezellige plek met een fijne sfeer. We kwamen vlak voordat de keuken ging sluiten, maar dat was geen probleem, we konden dus gewoon een hapje (lekker!) eten.
