Had a delicious lunch, friendly service. Always a nice place to come back to!

Lovely atmosphere unfortunately after 2 hours of waiting they brought burned salmon and rancid congealed food to the table ...when I mentioned this, the waiter tried to cause a massive scene, everyone in the place was looking at us while he shouted about how it's not his fault... I'm sure it's not mine either... Plus the toilets smell bad. overall very disappointing. Eat anywhere else

My dear parents' dinner, just like last year... It was incredibly crowded and busy, which is of course nice for the owner, but the tables are way too close together. We were crammed into a corner with barely any room to move. As a result, it felt very cramped for most of us. It was also filthy, with lots of food scraps on the floor and under our table, and the toilet was too disgusting to use... So, it was our last time. I think it's purely aimed at students/young people, and that's fine. The food was decent, especially for the price. The service was helpful and friendly 😊

Initially, we had to wait a bit longer for help, but it was very busy. The food arrived in a reasonable time and was simply good and tasty.

A lovely café by the water with a view of Leiden City Hall. Good food and a great atmosphere. It's a shame that only seagulls and jackdaws were flying around on the terrace, so we changed seats and found a spot in front of the building. That would have been better. Reservations aren't accepted.

They give you the old menu first, and when you want to order, they give you the new one. And no, the dishes you'd already chosen simply can't be made anymore. Oh yeah, they also conveniently omitted the capers from the smoked salmon. The pork tenderloin was tasteless, but the fried chicken was good. A special coffee was offered as compensation, though. All in all, a point down compared to last time. Perhaps a point up next time. But not this time.

I have never had a worse Caesar salad in my life.

The food was truly fantastic, finally enjoying eating out again. They also put a lot of thought into lactose-free options on the menu, and there were several options to choose from.

Cozy place, but... spareribs were boiled and then fried, resulting in tasteless and tough meat. I ordered a rare steak and received it medium to well done. Such a shame. The salmon, carpachio, and chocolate mousse were fine, but that's not so difficult to prepare, of course.

Famous bar in Leiden, usually busy, but to me there’s nothing especially unique about it. The service is quick and they clear your glasses fast, which can make you feel a bit rushed

The buffalo mozzarella salad was a disappointment, a few lettuce leaves completely covered in red pesto sauce. The mozzarella balls were tasteless. The roasted seeds were missing. This is a culinary shortcut, and the flavor is lacking, and the chef knows this.

Pub with outdoor seating on the river. The seating is cramped, and the building is a bit old and worn. The staff is young, friendly, and fast. The menu is typical but still interesting, with hearty dishes. Prices are average. The bathrooms are a bit spotty.

While I generally like this restaurant, it's annoying that you're also sitting inside surrounded by a strong smoky smell. The cause is people smoking right next to the restaurant entrance. I reported this, but I didn't get the impression she was concerned. So, it won't be resolved. For me, this is a reason not to have lunch there again. This is a shame because the number of non-smokers is many times greater than the number of smokers. In Amsterdam, near the Waag, they've now made half of their outdoor terrace non-smoking. Everyone is happy, both smokers and non-smokers. The solution is simple, but apparently not easy. A missed opportunity.

Very nice ambiance and attentive service. The food, however, could have been much better. The burger was cooked far too long (dry), and the chicken was also overcooked and rather tasteless. The appetizer and dessert were good, though. Why, on a Saturday, you could only order a standard burger from the set menu and not the usual à la carte menu remains a mystery to me.

Nice place, the only thing they need to address is the restroom. Everything could use a bit of a makeover. I've been coming here for 26 years, but nothing has ever been done about it. One restroom is a bit small, but the men's area is also a good place to go, but having to walk around in jeans isn't really an option. Otherwise, the staff is friendly, and it's a cozy cafe. The food isn't great, but it's okay.

A cup of coffee for 2 euros on Saturday morning. Nice location outside, in the middle of the market.

Don't eat here! Nice place for a drink. It's cozy inside, but when it's windy outside, everything changes. I ate the Mixed Grill on two different dates, and both nights it came back out with a vengeance. So I only got a few hours of sleep last night. The food is quite good, although the hot wing was surprisingly spicy, but that food takes its revenge on your stomach six hours later. It wasn't worth it.

Really nice food, well prepared and good portion sizes and value for money. But everything only comes with fries, no alternatives. It's also an incredibly noisy environment

Characteristic pub on the Leiden canal. Inside room and outside tables near the canal. Choice of plated dishes and sandwiches. Wide choice of appetizers too. Very good food. Friendly and fast service. A bit dirty environment. Toilet absolutely needs to be revised. Average prices.

Had spareribs here on a sunny terrace near the water (€19). It was 2 ribs! It took a while for it to arrive. We therefore received a drink on the house.

Viel erg tegen. Eerst 1,5 uur gewacht op eten. Inktvisringen waren taai. Kippendijsate was wel erg weinig voor de prijs. De mixed grill was waarschijnlijk niet helemaal goed, na het eten alleen maar buikpijn gehad. Ook de friet was deels gaar en deels niet. Erg jammer, want het was vroeger echt een hele leuke tent met lekker eten, maar helaas is daar nu weinig van over. Ook de bediening heeft zowat geen oog voor je.

An excellent cafe with nice music and friendly staff. But the quality of our lunch was very disappointing (We had two 12-hour meals, fish and vegetarian). The spreads, fish and croquettes were still ok, but the bread… Scandalous! From both brown and white you get the cheapest sticky casino bread available. Isn't there 1 local bakery that supplies fresh, sturdy floor bread?! If necessary, you can buy a few luxury spelled loaves at the appie, but this... Very disappointing. The price of a Radler 0.0 is also out of this world :(

Einstein in Leiden is one of those places that is always full. Outside you can sit in the sun with a view of the canal, and that certainly makes it a nice place to take a break. Things are a bit less inside: the interior feels dated and is often a bit messy or even dirty. What is especially disappointing are the prices, 7 euros for a beer is really absurd. Cozy outside, but inside and in terms of price level it leaves a lot to be desired.

Let me first say how 'pricey' it is, €8 for 6 mini frikandels, which makes about one and a half normal frikandels, really too expensive. There is also glass everywhere on the ground and if you have dogs with you that is really not useful, my hand had a piece of glass in her paw; quite dangerous. For the rest there is nothing special, chairs were not comfortable, staff was not the most friendly, etc. It was just in a nice place and the drinks were well stocked. Conclusion: Big scam, wouldn't recommend it here.

Very nice location. Nice staff and very hospitable. Food was fine, nothing special. And all that for a decent price.

Unfortunately, I was served two raw burgers and had to wait so long for new ones that the point was now over. The second round of burgers had tough bits in the burgers, which made them unpalatable. Unfortunately, they were no longer asked at checkout, which is a shame for €18.50 each.

Had lunch here with two people at the weekend. The service was smooth and friendly. The food tasted very good and the price-quality ratio was top. Atmospheric restaurant.

Enjoyed a little something in a nice atmosphere with good service. Today, because of the weather, indoors instead of outdoors directly on the canal.

Good food with lots of choice on the menu. Plates beautifully laid out, busy with a cozy vibe and a view of the skating rink. The terrace is also quite full on Monday evenings in December.

Drinking alone, living in Leiden for soooo long and visiting Einstein for the first time. Very nice, cozy and attractive tent, especially until the late hours. Update 29-11-2024: Had a work party with rented upstairs room. Nice room with a bar in it. Nice waitress/barmaid. Had a super fun evening with an "I love Holland" game show, including a 3-course dinner. Everything well organised. The food was actually fine, but the steak was very tough despite being well cooked (medium). Personal figures for the food: Carpaccio 8 Steak 5.5 Apple pie with ice cream and whipped cream 7.5

Order was not that well translated into what was served and food was mediocre. Not bad at all but neither worth the money. Especially since there are so many better alternatives available.

Dutch food culture is a bit different than what I am used to. And they don't really clean thoroughly here either.

The waitress was very rude. She took our plates while we were still eating and stood there, made us uncomfortable so we felt the force to leave the place. I didn’t feel welcome at all, never going back!

The location of 'Einstein' is simply good, but I think it is all a bit massive the way it is set up. 'Mass is k....' I can hardly get it out of my larynx because of those flat Dutch simple-minded TV series of course, but yes we live in the neo-liberal era and economies of scale with all the nasty side effects that entails such as; shouting advertising, loss of diversity and color is ultimately the greatest common denominator. Large groups of people also get used to it and for that group this cafe restaurant is quite an attractive place, I estimate. However, if you want to 'sit quietly' and prefer not to be looked at at all, just want some more personal attention, attention that goes a little further than average or just a 'drink and newspaper', then this place is a less good choice. The girls who work there clearly enjoy their work and you benefit from that as a guest, whether you enjoy it or not. It is funny that 'individualism and color' versus 'mass and uniformity' are located next to each other in a rather extreme way. Next to Einstein is 'Meneer Jansen', which has for many years been the most colorful pub in Leiden, a truly tailor-made place for anyone who does not fit into the preconceived framework. By the way, to complete the story, there is another cafe on the other side of the water: 'Ons Hoekje', the name actually says it all... which in turn is the ultimate place for: drinking, shouting, coughing, Covid-oblivious, always talking but not hearing but respecting part of the residents of Leiden. There is something for everyone around the Koornbrug, although surprisingly enough there is not a single intellectual cafe in the whole of Leiden (in contrast to medium-sized cities such as Gouda, Delft, Haarlem and Alkmaar. And that for a student city... .studying is becoming more and more a matter for the elite, that is noticeable and that elite is not necessarily smart... but only privileged, talk about loss of potential ;) In any case, Einstein stands for it like a man! share of the Leiden public chosen by her. The coffee is of high 'Illy' quality and a newspaper is ready for you. Now just repair the patio heaters or at least replace those heaters that are broken... what bad advertising that is... The patio heaters on the boats, where of course there is a 'draft like hell' are all on, but the heaters that attached to the building are broken... And don't start talking about the environment or gas or electric, as a waitress whispered (she was talking about 'Yes, they still run on old gas!', old gas...;) ) because that is of course a cool story. For example, induction cooking has significantly higher CO2 emissions than cooking on gas, but of course you don't hear anyone about it... and why? Because it is not in line with the credibility of the policy, of course. And of course not with 'the mass is k..' thought, or 'the big numbers'. And so the circle is complete again and you will know a little more when you are faced with a choice of going out in Leiden.
