Engel X Bengel in Wijk 1 Binnenstad

Ordered two chocolate cakes and both were frozen in the middle. We sent them back. Then we got "new" pieces that were melting and falling apart so they covered them with hagelslag 🤣 the cake was warm! They put the cake in the microwave to defrost it. Who puts a cake in the microwave?! It was inedible. What a joke of a restaurant.

Had a lovely lunch via social deal. 2 course lunch tasted delicious.

Wij kozen voor EngelXBengel, omdat de menukaart ons wel aansprak. We kregen een mandje brood met smeersel, maar de broodjes waren droog en oud. Tomatensoep smaakte goed. Maar helaas de varkenshaas was ijskoud, ook de groentegarnering was koud. De zalmspies was warm, maar niet meer dan dat, ook de groentegarnering en saus was koud. Varkenshaasje werd opgewarmd, maar de groente was en bleef koud. Als compensatie werd ons koffie van het huis aangeboden met excuses, maar wij hadden het wel gezien.

We bought a 3-course meal and bread board through a social deal. We waited an hour and a half for the bread board and only had one drink during that time. This didn't arrive until after the starter. The bread roll wasn't fully baked and was still raw! The salmon from the starter was tough. We didn't receive it until a good hour and fifteen minutes later! We had to ask for our second drink twice, and it took half an hour for it to arrive. The rib-eye was a very thin cut and was well-done and tough instead of medium-rare. The main course was lukewarm, the fries were limp. And it took ages for the sweet potato fries to be served alongside the main course. But the worst part was that we were completely ignored by the staff. Even at the bar, they simply turned their backs on us. The music in the restaurant wasn't turned on until two hours later. In other words, a complete mess. It was a good thing we'd already paid through Social Deal, otherwise we would have left long ago. We'll never come back here.

Lots of menu errors: the salmon was way too salty, the food was simply poorly prepared, the burgers were bland, etc. We had to call the staff to get us something to drink, otherwise we'd have made do with one glass all evening. The prices don't suggest it needs to improve much, so it's expensive for what we got. I was asked to explain the review in an email. I happily did so and explained openly and honestly what happened. No response yet, but I'll update as soon as I do.

Ik bestelde de soep van de dag (aspergesoep) Mij man en kinderen de kipburger met friet. De friet was extreem zout en de soep ook, maar dan ook echt extreem zout. Even iets van gezegd en ze gingen het oplossen. Krijg ik mijn soep terug, nu zonder smaak en zo waterig als het aar zijn kan, blijkt gewoon soep uit een pak te zijn, maar zorg dan op zijn minst voor smaak en dat je korrel poeder zijn opgelost 🤔 De hygiene is ver beneden pijl en vooral de toiletgroepen. 1x en nooit meer. Helaas. Meisje van de bediening was wel erg vriendelijk, dat mag wel gezegd zijn.

We are on holiday and had lunch in several places, but this was by far the tastiest carpaccio sandwiches of the entire holiday.

How hard is it to put a drinkable Chardonnay on the menu? Apparently, that's too much to ask at ExB. Brrrrr Friendly service, though.

Just simple, bread with two croquettes, what can you possibly ruin with that??... No butter but fake butter, plant-based, that's really not tasty... The lettuce as a garnish was old, limp and colored, and no dressing, such a pity. Once and never again, I reported about the old lettuce, well she saw it, sorry, nothing else...

During the Wine and Food Walk we were able to enjoy a dish with wine here. The wine did not match the dish at all. The dish was completely out of tune (below standard) with the rest of the participating restaurants. Not recommended!

With the Wine & Food walk today, Engel X Bengel was the last stop. We were not assigned a table but had to find a table ourselves where there was no room left. We did not get to see the bottle of the wine and the food had little distinct taste and was a bit watery on our plate. Not recommended.

Een gezellige locatie. Het eten was er goed. Ik begrijp de wat slechtere reviews niet. Wij delen deze ervaringen niet. Netjes geholpen, vriendelijke bediening, mooi geserveerd en vooral lekker en voldoende, ondanks een paar grote eters.

Horrible Bad operation Dirty restaurant

Very nice service but the food is terribly bad. The pork tenderloin in cream sauce was gray, old and simply unacceptable. We did not want to give the chef a 2nd chance and left and the bill was paid.

When we went to Engel+Bengel around 5:00 PM, there was virtually no staff present: there was 1 waitress present and the rest of the staff was eating at a large table inside and had no regard for the guests (who were also were not greeted). We sat down on the covered terrace where a number of people had been sitting for some time, who had not been served at all (they said: "It could take a long time.") We saw that all the tables were very dirty: there were food remains: these had absolutely not been cleaned. There were also sticky food remnants from a distant past on our table. We waited for quite some time for someone to come to us but no one showed up!! Because the unappetizing tables made me feel nauseous, I went to the toilet: the men's toilet was partly temporarily covered with tape so that one dirty toilet could be used. When I went to wash my hands, there was no soap at all (not even in the ladies' room). I find that an abomination. When I arrived back at the dirty table, my wife said that no one had come to her to take the order in the meantime. I then wandered through the entire restaurant to find the one waitress who was there and told her that I wanted to cancel my appointment via Social Deal because I thought it was a dirty restaurant and no one had come to us. The waitress looked at me with wide eyes and said nothing else, there was no excuse whatsoever. Never again, what a travesty.

The stars are for the nice staff, with whom you have little to do given the ordering and payment system (per qr). The only restaurant that still had room on a very busy day. Given the reviews and experience, I now understand why. 16.5 euros for a salad that in terms of size cannot yet pass for a side salad with minimal ingredients. The nachos consisted largely of crumbs, the fries were not well done. The toilets are very inconvenient to reach. After we were served the food, we didn't see anyone again. The price/quality ratio is completely lost, it is almost embarrassing. The whole of Deventer seems to know that, so people will mainly come from outside. Too bad, the interior and the terrace look cozy

What a bad choice this was. Upon arrival we were told that we were welcome until 7.30pm. Dark restaurant without any atmosphere. The food was bad. The sauce on the pork tenderloin had congealed. It was tasteless and the food was cold. The meat was warmed up briefly, but the rest turned out to be cold as well. By the way, I wasn't the only one with cold food. It turned out that someone else also had cold soup. It was made up for with a cup of coffee.

Orange juice from the carton was served instead of fresh orange juice. This names but I was fooled that the gravy was 1 day old. As if there is no difference between suit and gravy. Seeing people not drinking did not show any compassion. They don't care if their customers notice that.

Ik bestelde eten waarvan totaal geen smaak aan het eten. Zelfs met peper en zout erbij kreeg ik nog geen smaak aan mijn eten. Heb uiteindelijk aangegeven bij één van de serveersters en die nam het mee. Vervolgens kwam er een collega eraan en gaf aan dat kip wel gemarineerd was en dat niet anders kan en hij stelde de vraag wat ik dan wilde. Heb toen iets anders besteld na 10 min kreeg ik mijn eten. Klein stukje vlees met nog geen handje vol frietjes erbij. Kwaliteit is ver beneden het niveau niet te vergelijken met de oude Engel en Bengel. Mijn advies is om er niet heen te gaan. Moet wel er bij vermelden dat personeel wel vriendelijk was.

Qua sfeer een eetgelegenheid, die lager dan gemiddeld scoort, idem dito wat betreft hygiëne. Personeel niet de allergezelligste types: doen hun werk... Eten gemiddeld: beslist geen aanrader.

a cozy terrace with friendly service

Staff was ok, not very friendly. It took a long time before the ordered nachos arrived, it seemed as if they had been waiting somewhere for a long time: lukewarm and limp. Tasted nice.

The food is served lukewarm. Food is served that was not ordered at all. After asking numerous times, the ordered fries arrive. Tiramisu is sloppily served.

Staff is grumpy, portions are terribly expensive for what you get and also a long wait while there were few people. Sushi, on the other hand, is really great. And the terrace is cozy and nice to sit on.

The service was good, nice, pleasant and helpful woman. Actually, we should have immediately said that the satay sauce tasted a bit burnt. The churros were fried too hard. For us it is not worth repeating in terms of food. Not great for people with mobility problems or with a walker/scooter. Toilet is not possible for me. But go there for the fun, because that is there.

Taco also starter and the smoked burger as a main course. Both were pretty bad for what you would expect at a restaurant. Especially tacos, what a pathetic portion without decorations etc. I can't imagine how the chef of this place allows such dishes to go out. Average fries place serves even neater and more professionally. And that for around €35. Definitely not recommended for dining, more of a place where you can go for a beer.

It's better to go somewhere else, they really don't get it. Are you going anyway? There is a wall decoration made of real moss on the wall. If you are hungry, it is advisable to take a few bites from it. Is better than what they put on the plates for you.

Ordered 'Well stocked drinks board'. Never in my life have I seen such a sad snack board, there was no love in it whatsoever!. Couple of large pieces of bread with truffle mayonnaise as a dip, 2 slices of rolled cheese and 2 pieces of something that looked like a sausage. The fried snacks that came with it were so greasy that they still bothered you in the evening! Tables were also dirty, not to mention the toilet. The only plus is that they took the drinks board off the bill. You'll never see me here again!

On the first sunny day with 15 deg. This year the terrace was full. But unfortunately for most guests it was a long wait for the drinks and also for the lunch dishes. Fortunately, the lunch dishes ordered tasted good.

I went to E&B because it previously had a somewhat alternative cuisine. Didn't notice anything anymore! Even just 1 vegetarian main course. Rarely have you had such a bad meal for high prices. Everything from the cheapest shelves in the stores. I ordered the empanades, which were served in a kind of soup plate with a scoop of fries and a tablespoon of very coarse coleslaw straight from a supermarket container. The empenades themselves were undercooked and tasteless. The frying oil in which the fries and empenades were fried was very overpowering and had an unpleasant taste. In the snack bar they serve the meals with more love and care. The chef has apparently never heard of color and presentation. Let me not go on about the tasteless waffle. No star for the cook! Service and atmosphere were okay.

What a mockery. This is the worst "restaurant" we have been to in a long time. Ordering had to be done via QR, where you had to pay immediately. We had 1 coffee, 1 mint tea, 1 croquette sandwich and 1 bouncer. Not really the hardest thing. The coffee and tea were brought fairly quickly by a polite person. However, the tea water...lukewarm. Coffee was good. And then the waiting started... had to wait 70 minutes. In the meantime, go to the toilet.... oh no, never mind. What a filthier mess. Both toilets clogged. Just gross in there. And then the food arrived, lukewarm croquettes and fried eggs. What a drama. We were surprised that such a tent has a permit. Of course I asked why.... well, it's busy. Never mind...never again.

Nice meal. Unfortunately the soup was not warm. Otherwise fine.

I'm posting my review here again because it was removed from Social Deal... special... only the 4 and 5 stars are still there! Never had such a bad meal in a restaurant before. This was also indicated to the young service and it felt sad that they had to bear this complaint. Where was the cook or the manager? It smelled, the toilets were dirty, you could easily see the tampons in the waste bin next to the sink. Nachos make no sense, soup mediocre. Waiting a very long time (more than an hour in an almost empty restaurant) for the main course while you think... it has been defrosted and fried: how do you manage to make it go wrong. Desserts not fresh either. Everyone suffered from eating all night long. The salmon salad made my daughter throw up in the restaurant. There was also quite a bit of plastic in there. The sea bream fillet made me throw up after eating it. The 4 free cups of coffee didn't make up for it. Paid way too much for very bad food in a restaurant that was not clean.

We ate at Engel Fries very hard (fried several times), vegetables were limp and the steak was not steak; had already been cut into pieces beforehand. The service was good!

The food tastes great. We work with an ordering system where you have to pay immediately. We had to wait about an hour for the order. I think that's a lot of time for two sandwiches. If I hadn't paid I think I would have canceled the meal.

I had the steak with pepper sauce, lots of peppers. After half of it I had a too peppery feeling in my mouth. Leave the rest. Also few vegetables with this dish.

Had a nice meal here, just like the social deal, nice deal! Service was top notch, very friendly staff. Carpaccio was great and the tacos were tasty too. Pork tenderloin was fried a little too long and therefore a bit dry. But add a lot of delicious mushroom sauce and it will be delicious

I remember this restaurant from previous times. Then I was pleasantly surprised by the creative menu and the nice service. Unfortunately this time it was a different experience. I received a meal that would have been more appropriate in a snack bar when I ordered the filled empanadas. That turned out to be some kind of stuffed pie that had been cooking in the deep fryer. Furthermore, only fries and mayo and a little coleslaw raw vegetables. The starter was...Yes, basically just chips with a dip. I had pinned my hopes on the coffee which was downright weak and lukewarm. Finally, the service clearly didn't enjoy it...and unfortunately neither did we at the end. Too bad because it was once a nice place, but I suspect a changing of the guard. I won't go back again.

What a delicious meal I have had for 20 euros per dish! But not with Engel and Bengel. A poor nacho starter, with a handful of nachos and a perfunctory dollop of much too sour guacamole. Main dish? Two full-fat fried empanadas with fries and instant coleslaw. A pulled pork burger with lukewarm meat, the liquid dripped out. With - yes - fries. Weak coffee. Really very mediocre, and in terms of price far above what you could ask for.

It may have just been a bad day but the food was really poor during my visit. My waffles were full of oil and were stale. The portion size for the chips was not great. And the coffee was just weak. Yesterday we had dinner with partner and friends via social deal. Chosen for starter and main course. The carpaccio was good, sushi and taco decent. The tomato soup was not tasty. Didn't taste like anything either. Looked like a can of tomato paste made with too much water. Never had such a tasteless soup for 7 euros before. Main courses: the pasta was tasty. The pork tenderloin should have been filled with brie, but alas and the cream sauce was very watery. But also a very small piece of meat. I expected the chicken satay to be some kind of large chicken skewer considering the 18 euros and the cheaper chicken thighs, but it was a very small stick with I think a total of 1 chicken thigh of meat and also some watery satay sauce. The taste was decent. We did have extra dessert. The cheesecake and ice cream was fine. The churros were too thick and not fully cooked and therefore a bit soggy. Staff were very friendly. Furthermore, the interior/windows could use a cleaning refresher. Given the beautiful location, there could be more to it and it should be full, especially for a Saturday evening. Or are they dependent on social deal lures. Compared to what Engel x Bengel was, it is a faded glory. Too bad because with social deal you could attract people who are unfamiliar with engelxBengel and have them come back by serving something good. Price-quality ratio is not in balance and for us a reason not to come and eat again al social deal offer. There are other excellent alternatives

Wel eens eerder hier geweest maar deze ervaring vond ik echt tegenvallen. Volgens de openingstijden zijn jullie tot 00:00 geopend maar ik werd om 18:15 langzaam van het terras geveegd, terwijl ik nog zat te eten en aan het genieten was van mijn 0% biertje. Alles was al opgeruimd en ingepakt alleen ik zat er nog. Heb m’n biertje ge-at en ben maar snel weg gegaan want het was wel duidelijk dat de toko dicht ging. De sushi was prima alleen het bakje voor de sojasaus en een stukje hygiëne ontbrak. Ik vond het geen fijne ervaring.

Lieve, jonge bediening die erg hun best deed. Ongeïnteresseerde ‘manager’ die bellend en rokend naast ons zat. Eten bedroevend smakeloos, ongeïnspireerd en lauw. Zelfs de frieten waren te doorbakken (je zou denken, wat kan je daar nou aan verpesten). Jammer voor zo’n mooie locatie!

Hier gegeten via een Social Deal aanbieding. Eten was echter niet geweldig, voorgerecht nachos waren 6 stukjes nacho in een bakje guacamole gestoken. De waffle burger is origineel maar de kip was veel te lang gefrituurd. De toiletten zijn erg verouderd, doorspoelen werkte niet en leek niet erg schoon. Locatie van het restaurant is echter top, buiten op het terras is het een prima plek om te zitten.

Hier gegeten en toch wel enorm geschrokken van de prijs van een biertje. Ze hebben 10 euro per biertje gerekend. Waanzin.. Kwaliteit matig, bediening bedroevend.

Leuk interieur, wel zijn dingen niet helemaal af, zoals de verf. Voorgerecht was lekker. Carpaccio met lekker veel pijnboompitten en truffelmayonaise. Als hoofdgerecht had ik een burger. Deze waren heel groot, vullend en vet, waardoor ik een beetje misselijk werd. De bediening daarin tegen was heel lief en snel.

Bediening was vriendelijk. Maar traag moesten lang wachten. Tomatensoep was niet op smaak en de sushi was meer rode balletjes dan wat anders. Zalm was al op bij binnenkomst om 17.30. Hoofdgerechten maar afgezegt

Bediening matig en niet zo vriendelijk, via social deal gegeten. Bij de gerechten niet aangegeven dat er een meer prijs in rekening werd gebracht.

Via Social deal een 3- gangenmenu gehad. Prima eten. Niet fancy of over-de-top. Gewoon gezellig en lekker gegeten.

Niet enorm enthousiast, voedsel was niet erg warm en de bediening nogal afstandelijk.

We waren te vroeg. Dit was geen probleem en we konden een tafeltje kiezen op het terras. Na een half uur gewacht te hebben, waren we nog steeds niet geholpen. Via de QR-code hebben we om service gevraagd, toen kwam er wel iemand. We hebben de drankjes besteld en moesten zelf vragen om een kaart. Voorgerecht de taco’s. Deze waren lauw/koud en taai. Erg jammer want de smaak was prima. Hoofdgerechten: classic burger en waffle burger. De classic burger was goed op smaak. Alleen doorbakken Ipv medium. De waffle burger was taai. De wafel was bijna niet te snijden en er zat ook weinig smaak aan. Ook tijdens het hoofdgerecht hebben we via de QR-code om service moeten vragen. Toen de tafel afgeruimd was en we aan het wachten waren op de dessertkaart / de vraag of we nog wat na wouden, hebben we na een half uur weer om service moeten vragen met de QR-code. Al met al was het het net niet.

Vanavond hier gegeten maar waar zal ik beginnen? Ik begon met de nacho's, daarbij zat er nog een halve avocado in mijn guacamole (als in niet gepureerd) na aangeven kreeg ik als reactie 'het is vegan'😂 Mijn dorade filet bevatte nog graten. Mijn groentes waren koud. Het toetje was wel lekker, maar €2 extra voor nutella is wel erg overdreven. De aankleding van het restaurant was niet erg sfeervol, de wc was smerig en het stonk. Het personeel was ook niet bepaald enthousiast.

Ongezellig, bediening was vriendelijke, eten was of te zout of te zoutloos . Wc was vies en er was geen handdoek bij de heren en geen toiletpapier bij decdames

Na een tijdje al uitgedroogd te hebben gezeten kwam het niet erg enthousiaste personeel onze bestelling opnemen, zelf na opname nog erg lang gewacht, het eten daarin tegen was prima! 👍🏻

Véél eten! Kon lang niet alles op. Bij dessert kwam ,we waren met z'n 2en, eerst bij de ene de koffie, deze was bijna op en toen kwamen de bijbehorende chocolaatjes en voor mij kwam toen het dessert......

Hier een social deal geprobeerd. Zaak met een mooi terras, leuke muziek op de achtergrond. De bediening was vlot en vriendelijk. De jonge medewerkster deed haar uiterste best. Over het eten zijn onze meningen verdeeld: voorgerechten rode biet en nachos waren goed tot zeer goed. Mijn saté kip was goed, de vegan lasagna was overdone. We kregen echter zonder discussie een nieuwe schotel. Zelden meegemaakt. Nagerechten waren goed. Besluit: ok maar ik vermoed en hoop dat er in Deventer betere zaken zijn

Vlotte en vriendelijke bediening. Gammele tafeltjes buiten en binnen nogal claustrofobisch. Nauwe trap richting toilet en keuken wat een beetje een donker hol is.

Vriendelijk personeel, snelle service. Eten was slecht patat was heel erg vettig en nachos waren ook niet te smakelijk.

Gammele buitentafels en stoelen, goed voorgerecht, slecht hoofdgerecht. Verbrande champignons, taai varkenshaasje, heel machtige combi van kip, ei, spek en wafel en geen groentegerecht. Jammer, eerder wel lekker gegeten bij Engel en Bengel. Aardig personeel.

Prima eten, maar mijn gezelschap had lauwe wijn, excuus bleef uit, binnen hing een muffe lucht dus zijn we in de erker gaan zitten, het was duidelijk dat het niet meer de engel x bengel was van vroeger, het restaurant was nog niet halfvol op vrijdag avond. Zonde want de gerechten waren prima! De bediening mocht ook iets vaker langs komen.

Lekker eten dat wel. Maar erg lang op de maaltijd moeten wachten, gewoon vergeten door te geven aan de keuken. Jammer.

Fijne informele bediening. Lekker geluncht.

Leuk terras met uitzicht op het plein, markt of wat er ook te doen is. Heerlijk als de zon schijnt en je kan buiten zitten.

Lekker gegeten, vriendelijke bediening en goede sfeer. Het is leuk dat er originele menu's zijn, dat maakt het restaurant uniek. Wij waren erg vroeg (17.15 uur) maar dat was geen probleem, de service was des te beter en we hadden snel onze bestelling. Het was wel een grote portie dus we kregen ons bord niet helemaal leeg. Daar is nog wat ruimte voor verbetering. Maar verder ben ik dus heel tevreden en zou ik zeker teruggaan!
