Fire Cafe in Binnenstad

The food was delicious and the ambiance of a former fire station was lovely. The service was very friendly and attentive. You don't always get exactly what's listed on the menu, but the food was delicious.

Ate here on the 2nd day of Christmas 2024. Potatoes were raw. Even the 2nd portion after it was indicated that it was raw, were also raw. The amount that was served was below par when you compare this to the price. It was very disappointing. This was 1x and never again.

Simply great, lovely little location....

Always been a great place. The food is good, but the arrogance of the waitstaff is the highlight of the evening. A guy with dyed blond hair walks away while I'm trying to place an order. Then he returns with a snarky and customer-unfriendly response. There's no service on the floor, so we have to walk to the bar ourselves to place an order. Then the same guy brings the food, and I ask him if we can get a little more chili sauce with the nachos. This same guy doesn't bring it until the food is gone. It's awful; his colleague has to make amends for his rude colleague's behavior.

Excellent service - Qui-sham was a delight

What a lovely place! We had a wonderful meal and drinks here. On Friday evening, we ate on the terrace overlooking the water. The following Saturday, we enjoyed sitting there and having a drink. On Sunday afternoon, we had a delicious late-night lunch inside. A wonderful place and not too expensive if you're in Leeuwarden. Highly recommended!

Excellent restaurant with great seats in a boat 🚤 right on the canal. Great staff, super friendly, and really on the ball. The food is delicious, and vegetarians will also find something to enjoy here. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. Thanks for the wonderful stay.

Had lunch here this afternoon, with coffee and hot chocolate with whipped cream. Went back in the evening for chicken with salad and wine. Nice, cozy place.

We had a gluten-free lunch here. When we ordered, they asked if we had any allergies, and because one of us has celiac disease, we informed the kitchen. We enjoyed a delicious carpaccio sandwich without any worries. There's also a well-stocked play area for the little ones. There's a table nearby, and because it's tucked away in a corner, children can play there without wandering through the restaurant. Update Aug 2025: The menu has changed, and they no longer offer gluten-free sandwiches. However, the salads (the goat cheese salad is highly recommended) can be made gluten-free.

The service was excellent, but the Caesar salad isn't a full meal for the price. It's a head of lettuce with three pieces of chicken and a few croutons.

We miss dishes from the old menu. We tried the new menu twice, but we didn't really like it. They have yogurt again, but it's really not good. The strained yogurt should be put back on the menu.

Beautiful location, but what a disappointment. The staff has a clear division of labor. Hielke clears the table, Sietse brings the order, and the arrogant, toothpaste-fake-smile Katrina takes the order. So, a long wait, after which you have to pay 10 euros (!) for half a liter of Brand Weizen. Oh yeah, I had to pass on the appetizers after an hour of trying to order them.

Lots of choices on the menu. It has gotten expensive, though. And a croquette with bread topped with a cauliflower and carrot sauce, that makes me go "Error" 😀.

We had lunch there on a busy, sunny, and lively terrace. My tomato soup, at €8, was a bit disappointing, to be honest; it tasted like broth, and the meatballs were tasty, but I would have preferred a thicker, real tomato soup. I also had two croquettes with bread, which I think were €13 each. And that's it. No garnish, two bowls of sauce, one of which was a kind of mustard-mayo mix that already had a discolored top. And croquettes on sourdough bread—well, not a fan. In short, the lunch felt a bit underwhelming. I even left the soup, and the staff were so busy they didn't ask any questions. Oh! The beer and the atmosphere were excellent!

We had a wonderful dinner and drinks at Fire tonight! The food was fantastic, the drinks were delicious, and the service was excellent. Kudos to Thijmen, who really looked after us so well!

The service was excellent, and the table by the canal was perfect. The food was way too expensive for what you got. The stuffed (?) tomatoes with a little rice were disappointing. They lacked flavor and were too small. I wouldn't go back.

I have visited this restaurant for many years and yesterday night since some time, I experienced their renewed concept, and what a great improvement! The food was delicious, very fresh seasonal ingredients, perfectly cooked catch of the day fish, and assortment of deserts were so delicious! Great quality/price, very kind service, local kindness within an affordable pricing. Highly recommended when visiting Leeuwarden!

Heel erg lekker! Ik had een mosselpan echt overheerlijk! Er was een barbecue avond dus mijn tafelgenoten aten daarvan, hun vonden het minder ossenhaas te rauw, kip was niet van de barbecue! Hele goeie bediening die het probleem graag wilde oplossen. Zeker een aanrader niet de laatste keer dat ik kom!

Excellent sandwich and yoghurt with fruit!!

The view makes up for a lot. We had lunch on the boat, which gave us a beautiful view of the water and the dock. The food was extremely disappointing. And too expensive for what you actually get. We had a meatball sandwich and an omelet on dry bread. The bread was stale. So tough and hard. I found the omelet boring (12 euros) and a meatball sandwich (13 euros). No toppings, for those prices. A meatball sandwich is just a meatball in a pan with a thin layer of gravy. The coffee was good. Sit here for the view and just order a cup of coffee.

We were planning on having a drink together. We ordered a drink first, which was perfectly fine. Then we wanted a Pornstar Martini 0.0, which we received and didn't taste good. The mocktail had a spicy flavor and tasted nothing like a Pornstar Martini 0.0. We mentioned this to the staff, and they said the recipe had changed and they couldn't help us. We asked for something new, and they said no because the recipe was different. We found this incredibly unprofessional, so we didn't finish our drinks and paid immediately. We won't be back.

Nice service but the food abit over priced

Ondanks de aantrekkelijke geur van de barbecue is het dagmenu met kip van de grill een aanfluiting. Het 3-gangen menu begint met een gevuld ei. Smakeloos, nul aandacht aan presentatie. In rap tempo volgt kippendij van de grill geserveerd op een bedje van onherkenbare groente. Het blijkt spinazie met taugé te zijn. Zwart en zompig. De kip is lekker maar de 5 overkookte krieltjes die erbij worden geserveerd raken kant nog wal. Om het geheel af te ronden bestaat het toetje uit aardbeien verstopt in kant en klare slagroom en basilicum/aarbei ijs. En het was maar goed dat ze dat erbij vertelden want ik had geen idee wat de smaak (of beter gezegd gebrek aan smaak) moest voorstellen. Echt beneden alle peil, en dat voor €30 op. Absolute afrader.

We have been coming here for years, very nice terrace! Unfortunately we are less enthusiastic about the new menu; almost all good options have disappeared or been adjusted. But the prices have been increased considerably. For us still a good location to have a drink; but we will skip lunch and dinner for now. Update 28-6: today we gave Fire Café another chance by ordering a drinks platter. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. We soon noticed that this platter is no longer worth the money in terms of portions and quality. We have ordered this platter more often, but the snacks used to be much better and a large part of what made the platter so good is no longer there. The name of the platter also refers to the fine Frisian delicacies that our province is rich in, but the only thing left on the platter that justifies that is the cheese and the sausage. The service could also have sold us many more drinks, but after bringing the first one they did not come by anymore. When paying they did not ask how we liked it. Such a shame. We have been coming here for over ten years, but the quality and quantity here has really gone downhill. We will not be coming back for a while, unless the old menu comes back. Let's hope so.

Disappointing after years of satisfaction We have been visiting Fire Café for over ten years and were always satisfied, especially about the terrace and the informal atmosphere. Unfortunately, our experience has deteriorated considerably since the introduction of the new menu. The snack platter 'Our Frisian Quality', which we have experienced as generous and tasteful in the past, was very disappointing this time: limited portions, less variety and simply not worth the price. In addition, the service left much to be desired. After the first drink, no one came by to take an order, and when paying, we were not asked about our experience. Although we understand business choices in a changing time, we regret the decreased price-quality ratio and hospitality. No more lunch or dinner at Fire for us for the time being. Possibly another drink on the terrace, but no longer with the confidence of before.

I don't like cauliflower but wanted to try KFC. Yummy, so happy with my choice.

Well organised, friendly staff and good food at reasonable prices.

The restaurant is in a prime location, next to the canals. We sat outside in the shade and received a friendly welcome and service. We had latte macchiato and cappuccino, both hot and delicious. Cash payments are only accepted inside. The restrooms are located in the basement and are very clean and modern.

Recently new menu, too ridiculous for words! A crappy newspaper with a few far too expensive dishes. 20 euros for a few leaves of lettuce. It used to be a good place, but I don't go there anymore!

Nice spot on the canal. Very friendly and fast staff. Food was ok, spicy chicken was at most sweet, small portion of meat for the money.

A restaurant with a small dinner menu. The hamburger was good, the ribeye was unfortunately overcooked instead of medium and the pepper sauce had a lemon flavor. The skewer with tenderloin tips was good. The mayonnaise was very thin, fries fine.

De monchoutaart, nacho's en ijskoffie zijn echte aanraders! Nog niet een betere optie gevonden in Leeuwarden, dus zeker voor herhaling varbaar.

Bediening was prima, snel en vriendelijk. Het eten zelf vond ik wat tegenvallen. Biefstukspies kon er net mee door, het kon wel wat malser maar de bijgerechten vond ik echt niet lekker. De salade heeft iedereen laten liggen en de frites waren zo dun, het was nauwelijks friet te noemen. Daarom zou ik er niet weer naar toe gaan.

My chicken was raw and not spicy at all. Indicated this and they said it was pre-cooked. The chicory was hard to find. The fries were tasty but the food was not enough after a while we went to the mac which was good.

Food tastes good but very little for a lot of money. Fries are Mac Donald fries, not real fries. Service is great. Atmosphere really nice.

Good service, clean toilets, quite cosy, but the food was utterly depressing. My son ate his tiny plate of €24 vis van de dag in about 90 seconds. My soup came with one stingy small piece of bread. And at €28, “Onze Friese Kwaliteit: Een plank met diverse topproducten uit Friesland’ was an absolute crime - unless they really do grow olives and peanuts in Friesland, and lovingly produce supermarket-standard frikandel and kaastengels.

We had dinner on the terrace last Thursday and ordered the asparagus menu. We got three asparagus with three potatoes and a slice of ham. Some chopped egg and some butter. I understand that the catering industry is having a hard time, but in my opinion this is far too meager for the amount of €24.00. It may be that the asparagus is a bit more expensive in the beginning, but I don't think you will get any profit from three baby potatoes and some slivers of egg. Missed opportunity. Now the FEBO has benefited from it 😊

The Fire Cafe is highly recommended. We always find it comfortable there, the staff is very nice and we really like the food. For us it is a fixed stop every time we visit Leeuwarden.

Great service and delicious dishes

To start with my wife's food was quite tasty. I ordered the mushrooms prepared as snails, but they were far too dry. We reported this to the staff and it was resolved perfectly. Because Fire has not been around for very long, it is logical that not everything is perfect yet. The next customer who orders this dish will be served the mushrooms bathed in herb butter so that the accompanying bread can actually be dipped in something. I come here often and am almost always satisfied. Unfortunately, on March 8, I sat outside on the couch with someone for an hour, and I was told that I was not allowed to smoke there, but we were not able to order or receive a drink in a whole hour. Besides the comment about not being allowed to smoke (I then went to stand somewhere where it was allowed), we were not spoken to (not even a hello) and completely ignored. Very unfortunate.

Having a nice drink at fire turned out to be a real flop for us. We ordered a portion of nachos and some drinks. When this arrived at the table it looked better than it tasted. There was a lot of tomato sauce on it, which made the chips completely soggy. The taste of the sauce was very overpowering and was not tasty. We indicated this and someone was called for us. When this man came to us he indicated that tastes differ and that the only thing he could do was make a new portion with the sauce separately. We thought this was a good compromise. When he put the nachos on the table, he spoke in a passive aggressive tone: we normally don't do this, but I don't feel like making a fuss. We left this out but felt this was a comment that was not necessary. When we finished the food, my friend suddenly jumped up because he saw something moving behind the radiator. When he looked closer, there were all kinds of mice there. We also pointed this out to the staff. We then sat somewhere else. The man later came by for the last round, he made the comment that they worked on the mice every week but new ones emerged every time. We thought it was a special evening and we will never come here again.

Very sour wine. Really not too drunk

Vandaag voor mijn verjaardag uit eten gegaan. Voorlopig de laatste keer. Wij zijn vaste klant maar na de overgang naar een nieuw concept en nieuwe kaart vandaag de twee nieuwe kaart geprobeerd. Dit viel tegen. Is er nog appeltaart? Dat is nu appelcake??? De keuze is anders geworden. Ik kom er graag maar vandaag was het ronduit slecht. 2e rondje drank werd niet gevraagd. Slechte bediening. Bijgerechten vergeten. Zeer botte jonge ober met smal gezicht en stoppelbaard. Die had er vandaag geen zin in en was onbeleefd tegen mijn vrouw. Op het onbeschofte af tegen mijn dochter die ijsje met chocolade saus vroeg. Antwoord wij hebben geen gerechten op de kaart staan die chocolade saus nodig hebben. Wat is dit voor soort gedrag. Ik kom voor een gezellige avond en niet om afgekeken te worden ! Eerder was meneer ook al bot omdat het bordje niet opgegeten was. Met die opmerking “ dat ga ik onthouden”… wat maakt een ober het uit of je 3 hapjes laat liggen. Tafel werd niet afgeruimd voor het toetje en de ober was ook niet op de hoogte dat de flensjes op waren waardoor ik als enige geen toetje had en als laatste een toetje kreeg. Het personeel was niet oplettend terwijl er maar 25 mensen in de zaal waren. 154 euro voor een eenvoudig hapje eten en slecht bediend door een ober die echt iets anders moet gaan doen ! Fire zo raak je klanten kwijt. Voor vanavond een dikke onvoldoende….

Had a cup of coffee and homemade cake with my daughter. Homemade was only monchou cake that tasted fine, but the orange cake, on the other hand, was not even a creamy piece with a nice topping from the bakery. It was dry with a dollop of whipped cream next to it. Didn't work for my daughter either. Presentation of both was also mediocre. A total of 17.80 paid for 2 drinks plus cake, will be the new prices now, but I expect a little more! P. Alma

Attentive service, tasty food and a good atmosphere. What more could you want?

The food here used to be much better. Mwa. Can be better. Food came quickly but was not very warm. The 12 hours was very little. The croquette was not really warm anymore even though the food was on the table within 10 minutes. We were asked if we wanted bacon in the soup, yes, but it wasn't included... The salad was very watery. Pulled chicken had a lot of sauce so it wasn't special. Choice of lunch dishes is quite limited and not special. All in all a nice location for a drink, but for lunch I would rather go somewhere else.

Ate here on Boxing Day. What a mockery. Christmas menu. Waited 2 hours between starter and main course. Starter okay, main course 3 slices of steak and a quarter of a head of chicory with a drop of mashed potatoes. Dish also too cold. In the end I complained and didn't wait for dessert and unfortunately went home. Bummed about such a beautiful evening. Staff friendly and understanding.

With the main course there were only 3 pieces of steak. It was an hour wait for all dishes and in the meantime it was difficult to receive drinks. Price-quality ratio was not in proportion. If I had known this I would not have made a reservation here. Too expensive for such an evening and not yet a full stomach.

After a nice afternoon at the cinema we thought we would go out for dinner at Fire Café, but unfortunately this was very disappointing. On “normal” days it is wonderful to eat here, but on Boxing Day 2024 it was very disappointing. The waiting time was longer than the line at the new Efteling attraction, and the steak was divided among 3 people, so each got 3 steaks. The staff was very friendly, but we expected better.

Het was al even geleden dat we bij Fire hadden gegeten. In de tussentijd een nieuwe kaart. Je zou denken dat dat goed zou zijn. En wat erop stond was veelbelovend. Helaas was het echt ook veel te weinig. Het was een portie van een voorgerecht. Patat etc moet je apart bij bestellen. Dit was ons niet verteld. Al met al ondermaats.

Nice place, nice iced coffee, but my apologies for my buddy who recently ruined a glass, he is quite stupid sometimes.

We had dinner there tonight, but left disappointed. The food was served after more than an hour but was cold and raw. That aside, the biggest disappointment is the new menu. Starting with the starter, the bread board with break bread warm from the oven, with herb butter, olive humus and aioli, is now two slices of white bread with butter. Dishes such as lamb tagine, duck, round steak and a monthly special have been replaced by kibbeling and meatball. For dessert, the crème brulee has been replaced by tompouce or profiteroles. I regularly came here to eat with the family, because the food was good and child-friendly. A rare combination. Unfortunately, the good food is no more, but the prices have not dropped with the quality. I still have to see if I'll come back here again. If that is the case, I will of course update this review.

Went here with colleagues last Friday, November 29, for a farewell drink. We had to wait a very long time for our drinks, the staff is inadequate, the wrong drinks were delivered and we had to pay for drinks that we did not order. After we contacted the manager about this by telephone, it turned out that they did not want to accommodate us, because this would be our own responsibility. So we paid for drinks we didn't order, and now I'm being blamed for the fact that staff took these drinks. Shame! Had a very bad experience and in any case we will not be coming back here again. Worthless!!!

Very pleasant surprise, this Grand Café in the former fire station. We only had a coffe and oranjekoek but the menu looked promising. We might return to check that out.

Unfortunately a less pleasant experience at Fire. When handing over the menu, the waiter indicated that it was a new menu and comments were appreciated; very good that this feedback was requested. My girlfriend and I both ordered a tournedos in Bali gravy, served with white bread. The question whether my girlfriend could have fries instead of bread was answered positively; that was no problem. The tournedos were served and unfortunately both tournedos turned out to be overdone. Especially that of my friend who ordered medium rare. The waiter indicated that the kitchen was busy with a group order, meaning there was no time to take her tournedos back. Instead, a drink (read 1, not for both of us) was offered. Very special; You don't get what you order, but you are expected to keep it with a drink as a saving grace. In my opinion, this should never happen, regardless of how busy the kitchen is. When we received the bill it also turned out that the fries had been calculated. This was not communicated. After all, it was requested instead of the bread (we did not receive this bread either). I indicated this and the waiter went to inquire with the manager (who did not show himself to us), but he was clear, it had to be paid. Personally, I would have made different choices if the guest was already dissatisfied with the main course served. All in all, despite the nice ambiance, not a pleasant experience at Fire.

Had something to eat and drink there yesterday. Nice smooth service, delicious beer. I was very disappointed with the BLT sandwich. Maybe 2 measly slices of bacon. The ball sandwich is actually a minced meat ball with 2 large slices of bread. Too big for the small ball. Got 2 extra slices of bacon. The girl at the counter indicated that the manager did not have time to discuss my complaint because it was busy. Too bad would have liked to start the discussion. Unfortunately no photos were taken.

The atmosphere is very authentic. Nice. The service is "OK" I think it is not a cheap place. In fact rather €€€. Once thing stood out..... FISH SOUP for €10,50..... a ridiculous massive huge bowl of clear fish broth with 2 very hard small slices of wholesome bread with sort of melted cheese. All to be dipped in broth. We were warned ahead of time that it is was a clear broth WITHOUT any seafood in it (Good of taste). So not a cream style/ thicker/ more lunch item style fish soup. And the presentation was just weird! Not at all in keeping with the style of the cafe and..... the size of the tables !!!!

A day of museum visits concluded with a 2-course dinner. In a busy restaurant it turned out that you can still dine in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This is made possible by the waiting staff, who serve the customers all the tasty treats with great care and attention. Because of the new menu, they had to adapt again, and they were very curious about what the customer thought of it. Well, the customer really liked everything, and the new dessert left him wanting more. As a restaurant (instead of a disco) this was my first experience, and clearly worth repeating.

Settled here during a shopping session in Leeuwarden. The food was delicious, but what really stood out was the service. What incredibly enthusiastic, friendly, cheerful people work here! They really do their best to make you happy, you really feel welcome here. We liked it so much that we stopped by again at the end of the afternoon for a drink and snacks and it was a great experience again. Recommended!

Mijn 15-jarige dochter wilde op het terras vanmiddag een alcoholvrije ‘mocktail’ bestellen. De serveerster vroeg naar haar ID omdat dit “alcohol gerelateerd” zou zijn. Daarna gaf ze aan dat je als minderjarige ook geen alcoholvrij bier zou mogen kopen in de winkel, terwijl op de website van de politie staat dat dat prima kan, omdat er geen alcohol in zit. Waar zijn we hier mee bezig? Ik denk dat hier een bijscholingscursus voor het bedienend personeel op zijn plaats is.

Beautiful building and opponent inside, an old police station. The bathrooms still have the old cell doors, very interesting and very central.

I ordered Pulled chicken. Too bad it had a spicy sauce on it, a kind of curry sauce. That sauce ruined the taste of the chicken. Tip for the chef, please use a different sauce. My wife had the warm ham, which she really liked.

Nachos is saus met chips. Niet te vreten. Je krijgt geen eens kaas, je stopt echt tomatensoep in je smoel als je dit eet. Vreselijke ervaring, je word misselijk als je er naar kijkt

Leuke tent in een oud politiebureau/brandweerkazerne. De naam is dan ook leuk gevonden en voor het toilet moet je naar de oude cellengang in de kelder. De bediening is attent en vriendelijk. De saté was heerlijk en zelfs een beetje ‘fire-achtig’ maar niet te.
