Lovely restaurant in West. Perfect for shared dining with small dishes. They also have a great wine menu

Had a wonderful lunch. The dishes were fun, surprising, and above all, incredibly delicious. The service and atmosphere were also top-notch. A new favorite!

Amazing food and cozy vibes! The chef's tasting menu was exquisite, with flavorful dishes that sent my palate on a journey with each bite.

Not worth the money. The food was very tasty, and the plates were of a decent size, but the restaurant's "vintage" vibe is just a nice of way of saying that the place looks abandoned and in need of repair. The bathroom entrance was disgusting, with stairs in the middle of the hallway, and the smell of the sewage leaked into the dining area. If you're going to charge €40 for a chicken that comes with bone and vegetables that needs to be cut to be eaten, the least you can do is to have a knife that actually cuts. Staff was lovely, but the owner really need to get their stuff together.

Third time at Gertrude, and it was simply fantastic once again. We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and had a perfect evening: excellent food, attentive and friendly staff, and a wonderful ambiance. We can’t wait to come back—highly recommended.

We sometimes go for lunch but this year we went all in on Christmas day, with a 7 course meal accompanied by delicious wine. Always love the food, the service and the decor. One of the best additions to the neighborhood!

Ko In the beautiful Bosboom Toussaintstraat, we were warmly welcomed upon entering Restaurant Gertrude, making us feel immediately at ease. We had made a reservation for the Boxing Day Christmas package at this charming restaurant. It was a revelation to enjoy the delicious dishes with a wonderful wine list. It was a wonderful evening for us, and hats off to the excellent service. IN SHORT, I GIVE 5 STARS and highly recommend you, just like us, to experience this adventure. .

An intimate and cozy restaurant, quite trendy, with a really pleasant atmosphere. We dined at the bar, which always adds a nice touch. The concept of small plates to share works very well: the food is flavorful and well-prepared. We ordered wine by the glass on the server's recommendation, a good one, but be aware that the prices are high and not listed on the menu. Otherwise, a great experience: I recommend it.

The food was quite heavy and the flavors a bit muddled, it was hard to really tell what I was eating. Service super for friendly and nice and very cozy restaurant, too expensive for the food quality.

A very nice and cozy place. We enjoyed the ambience and relative quiet, which makes for easy conversation. The food tasted very good, and the service was friendly and quick. Will visit again some time!

One of the best meals I’ve had in years. Excellent service and great dishes with an unusual twist. The leeks and the pig cheeks were my two favourites. A strong recommend. The chef’s menu was excellent value and comprised perfectly sized dishes. Cool place - traditional but with a great soundtrack playing the background.

Last Saturday we had a delicious meal at the bar of that lovely, cozy restaurant.

Enjoyed the chef's menu! (5 courses, €65). Highlights were the fish cakes, the pork cheek, and the wild duck. Surprising flavors in a charming old French setting. The service was very friendly, especially considering it was busy, and there were only two of them. The pace is a bit high, however, because they only allow a two-hour reservation. This means there's relatively little time between courses, making a five-course menu actually too much. With this reservation time, a four-course menu would be more suitable. In that case, the reservation time should be extended.

We had a fantastic time with Sophie behind the bar; she recommended a delicious Chardonnay that we thoroughly enjoyed. It's a lovely place with incredibly friendly, attentive service!

An atmospheric restaurant with an excellent wine list and delicious menu, I recommend trying it.

The service was not good with inconsistent information provided to us, coupled with the female waitress’ initial rude attitude. 1. When we first came in at 5.30, she did not smile and immediately told us there is only one place available for us, and we cannot use other tables. If we want another table, we would has shorter time. She did not clarify that shorter time means 8 so we did not change the table, but still the atmosphere already feels off for us. 2. We then tried to enjoy the meal, and then we saw a 4-people table were seated with 2 people, so we asked another waiter why couldn’t we be seated there, and then he informed us that table is only until 8pm, and our table is for the whole night. There was also some mix-up with another reservation but I could not verify, which led to their inconsistent table assigment. Also, the liver pate that is supposed to compliment the duck dish was served late 3. Then, after we had paid and were waiting for our Uber, anothet waiter asked us to leave because another group was “right outside the door”, even though it was cold outside and we were still waiting for our driver to arrive. 4. When we left, I leave the door open for the next guests to come in, but they didn’t, and the waitress just slammed it hard, making us feel very unwelcome.

never treated so badly by a restaurant before. the Dutch blond lady is lowkey racist. She was nice to everyone except us because we were the only Asians in the room i guess. Forced us (a group of 3) to sit in a tiny table although let a White couple sit at a table for 4 people with the excuse that we can have the table for the night because we booked it and the other big tables we can only stay until 8, but at 8:05 they literally kicked us out because another group of guests were waiting. “sorry guys but they are here”. ??? what? you told us differently. and this racist dutch lady also slammed the door into our faces after we got out, feeling shocked about what just happened. horrible and disgusting behaviours.

The reception was immediately negative, with a curt and unfriendly response to a polite inquiry about our table. Then, smaller groups were seated at a larger table, which we weren't allowed to move to because we'd be running out of time. We were eventually promised we could stay the entire evening. Yet, shortly after, we were asked to hurry up to make room for a new group. Communication and service are clearly lacking here!

We paid a visit at Gertrude last night for dinner, as it was recommended by so many friends. We got a nice table inside the restaurant, the decor, the details, the service were outstanding. We ordered the chef’s menu and the food was good, but maybe I was expecting a bit more good quality food and tasty, but it was ok. The service was super good, considering that the customer service in Amsterdam is famous for being poorly, the one in Gertrude was super good. I would come back, but maybe for the à la carte menu.

I'm very sorry that I wasted my time and money in this restaurant. Very noisy, very crowded (the visitors sat like sardines in a barrel, on each other’s heads. I came to relax and enjoy delicious food (I thought the cuisine here was good), but I was very disappointed with my choice. The food is very ordinary, but with a pretense of originality. Plates with chipped edges. The prices are not low, and the service is so-so. But the highlight of my evening was the coffee we ordered at the end of dinner. They literally threw it on our table. No saucers, no sugar and milk. and didn’t put any candy or cookies Photo attached. You can see spilled coffee stains on the tablecloth, that's how the coffee was served If you want to ruin your evening, go to this restaurant

The most innovative and surprising menu I have witnessed in many years. Tastes and combinations that look strange on paper but truly work. Cauliflower with rose water for example... squid that tasted like a carbonara... truly special .

The food was very tasty, and while the portions were a little on the smaller side, it was adequate and very tasty and very well prepared. They are very meticulous about presentation, and the best part about this restaurant is that the service is impeccable. The servers are kind, attentive, personable, and extremely professional. We went there twice and each time it was a wonderful experience. It’s small and cozy and has a sit down bar and I would definitely go there again. The menu is more vegetarian and not a lot of meat options, but that was perfect for us. It seems very healthy again, the food tasted delicious. !!!!

Gertrude is a very pretty restaurant; the interior decor is gorgeous, and the outside seating area is quite nice too. I like the artwork on the walls. I also thought the silverware was very precious. I like it when a restaurant demonstrates attention to detail in such ways. However, like many spots in Amsterdam, the beauty and chic presentation don’t quite carry through to the food itself. The food was a disappointment. We started with the highly lauded fish cakes. Average. Not bad, but nothing special either. I personally enjoy the conventional Thai fish cakes much more. Next, we got the aubergine side. It just tasted like plain eggplant cooked on oil. There was a thin green sauce underneath that added nothing, in my opinion. The biggest disappointment of the meal, by far, was the catch of the day. This was sea bass, which is probably my favorite fish. It tasted more like "purchase of the day from the frozen section at Albert Heijn". I've had a lot of sea bass in my life, and this one was very clearly not fresh. It was served with a tarragon (I think) emulsion, which I thought was a pretty bad complement for sea bass. The side of fries was also really bad. The only thing I tasted was vegetable oil. Pretty hard to mess up, but unfortunately they got it wrong. The service was mediocre. They were attentive at first, but then our fries were forgotten and brought later when we reminded them. I also had to work really hard to catch someone's attention and remind them twice that I was trying to pay. I will not be going back — definitely not worth it for me!

Right on target! Personal and pleasant atmosphere with everything you could want from a well-established neighborhood restaurant. Quite expensive - but worth it. Narrow cocktail selection but nothing that disturbed the overall experience. Large selection of wines by the glass, we went for a bottle of Pinot Noir from Burgundy which was light and cherry. Perfect with my vegetarian main course. Don't miss the crabcakes for snacks!

We had a wonderful and enjoyable meal. We enjoyed the surprisingly tasty vegetables and fish. The atmosphere was relaxed, and everything was prepared with care.

Had been on my list to visit for a while, so I was very excited that we had been able to reserve a table. We opted for the chef's menu €65 pp, and the service was genuinely warm and professional. Unfortunately, the pace between courses was quite slow, which caused the dining experience and atmosphere to be somewhat lost. The food was certainly tasty, but not particularly surprising. Unfortunately, no repeat for us, but thanks for the hospitality.

The service in this restaurant is worst at best. I wanted to have a glass of wine by myself before going to a dinner so I called for a reservation and they said walk in is okay and that there’s available table to sit outside. When I arrived, the waiter said there’s only tables inside available (I left after an hour and outside tables were not full) so okay whatever. I sat down and I was not even asked what I wanted for more than 5mins when the restaurant was not busy at all. Didn’t even offer water when he took my order. Treated the other table with white women way faster and better when they arrived. Never going to this restaurant again.

This venue was beyond expectation. The service staff were clearly trained to the highest standard. Bringing a delightful smile at every interaction. The food is as higher quality as any Michelin restaurant. The chef even coming to our table to explain the complexity of his creation. Thank you team Gertrude. You made our evening wonderfull.

De ontvangst was zeer hartelijk. Plus punt. De wijnen te duur voor de kleine glazen die geschonken werden. Het eten; de hapjes vooraf waren goed, zo ook de voorgerechten. De hoofdgerechten echter; zeer kleine porties (voor te hoge prijzen verhoudingsgewijs) en alles was erg zout. De extra bestelde salade had meer croutons dan sla…. Het interieur inderdaad als een Franse bistro dus kleine oncomfortabele tafels. Jammer, maar de bediening maakte het gelukkig wel goed. Aanbeveling; lagere prijzen of betere kwaliteit ( inclusief grotere porties).

Honestly the food was disappointing. I got the main as a fish which was very salty and such a little portion for 27euros. Service and Atmosphere was very nice however.

I had high expectations of restaurant Gertrude because of the positive reviews. I had made a reservation for lunch at 12:00 on the terrace. I arrived at 11:56 and walked in to check in and ask if I could take a seat on the terrace, which was already ready. To my surprise, I was addressed in an unfriendly manner by the waiter. He pointed out that they would not open until 12:00 and that I would therefore have to wait for another 4 minutes. Although he was available at 12:00, the door was not locked until then. I found this reception to be unwelcoming. If you really do not want someone to walk in before opening time, then clearly lock the door. Because I had already paid a deposit, I ended up staying for lunch. But the incident upon arrival had already set a negative tone. The food was of variable quality — the fish of the day was unfortunately not completely cooked. All in all, the cold reception made sure that I will not come back here again. Fortunately, I was welcomed friendly at the café next door when I first went there for a coffee.

I can't explain it. I really thought that because of the other reviews this place was a hidden restaurant and perfect for a special dinner. We arrived and they made us wait 20 minutes. However, when we entered they were very friendly! Then the food started to arrive. The truth is that nothing. I recommend improving the sauces and reducing the price. Value for money 0 recommended. They took too long: for the main (which would be the 3rd course) we waited 3 hours. Also, despite the place being so cute there were too many people and it reached an unsustainable point.

The setting on the terrace is like being in Paris but with nice service. Good service and location in a beautiful street. Opted for the chef's menu and had a delicious meal. The dietary requirements of a vegetarian and a pregnant table companion were well taken into account. Normal prices for this quality category.

Llegamos 8 minutos antes y preguntamos si podíamos sentarnos en alguna mesa fuera. ¡El camarero dijo que NO! Abrimos a las 12 de la noche y si nos sentamos en la mesa reservada temprano otras personas se sentarán allí también. Luego nos dijo que tomáramos algo en los vecinos y cerró la puerta. Pasó un tiempo antes de que llegara nuestra bebida, así que volvimos para decir que queríamos cancelar nuestra reserva. El camarero dijo que eso no era posible y que no quería devolver nuestro depósito. Insistimos para que finalmente lo devolviera. La comida se ve muy bien en este lugar y ya la tenía antes, pero no voy a volver a un lugar donde tratan a sus clientes así.

Gertrude era simplemente encantador. Bistro a la luz de las velas lleno de gente ecléctica interesante con un menú a juego. Tomamos los pasteles de pescado seguidos de vientre de cerdo, pargo rojo, tártaro de atún y espárragos verdes. Seguido por el más hermoso alce de chocolate con fresas y creo que albahaca. Impresionante pequeño lugar. ¡Y no pudieron haber sido más encantadoras cuando tiré mi vaso de burbujas! Gracias equipo G.

Very attractive neighbourhood restaurant with lovely atmosphere. Lovely staff.

Beautiful restaurant. Some of the dishes were good but a lot were a miss. Rib eye steak dish was so so, beans were undercooked in the dish. Fish cakes were great. Pork belly was so so. Service was lacking. We were a large party and I honestly felt like serving us was a bother for them. Had to ask for certain dishes that we had ordered several times since they weren’t showing up. I was disappointed with this restaurant.

It’s a nice place with super friendly staff. And the vibe is suuuuper cute. However, the menu is very small for the fact that it’s more of a Tapas style place, especially when it comes to fully vegetarian options, super limited. The food is good but not super exceptional.

Gertrude came highly recommend but unfortunately our experience was a 5/10. We had the chefs menu which was 60 p/p for five courses which seemed like good value but wasn’t when two of the five weren’t good. They were able to seat us in the terrace although it was very busy and able to accommodate a fish allergy which was good. However, the food was so slow, between the first and second course we had to wait 30 minutes and in general between the courses we kept thinking when is the next course going to arrive. I don’t think it was the servers as opposed to the kitchen being slow. Though I did feel bad for the servers, there were only three of them and they seemed stretched thin. The food quality was hit and miss. The first course of fish was simply not good, it wasn’t cohesive and the sauce was very sweet. The fish cake which came as a side addition was nothing special. The non-fish starter was definitely the best dish of the entire meal being the white asparagus and oxtail - was a definite standout and would recommend. The second and third dishes were solid and tasty. The main of steak was delicious but the main of asparagus felt so disconnected and was composed more like a start as opposed to a main dish. I would recommend the steak but not the asparagus. Finally, the dessert was an absolute miss and finished the meal off on a bad note. It was some scone with a magnolia sorbet and milk extracted from asparagus - it tasted much like a herbaceous soup and was not satisfying. The scone had the oddest consistency and again the whole dessert just felt a bit chaotic and simply it did not taste good. Also the server at the being of the night had told us that the strawberry dessert was ok the chefs menu but it wasn’t what we received. I would like to belief that it was just an off night given how highly recommended the restaurant but I felt that for a €120 dinner for two ppl it simply wasn’t worth it and wasn’t a great experience. If going to eat, I would advise staying away from the set menu and ordering a la carte.

Intimate atmosphere, tucked down a side street, limited seating (for the better!), charming staff and delicious food. Ideal spot for a romantic date. While selection may be condensed, both menu and cocktails, trust them. If we’re in Amsterdam again, we’ll definitely return.

Hands down the finest meal I had during my ten days here. Elegant while friendly. Curious yet intelligent combinations especially the white asparagus with oxtails. A wide selection of wines from all over and the owner was ultra helpful in making suggestions.

Tuvimos una comida fabulosa aquí cuando visitamos Amsterdam. Tomamos el menú de los chefs una delicia de 5 platos que era brillante. Jasper el camarero y el equipo entregaron un gran servicio. El ambiente era muy animado y fue un verdadero placer gracias.

Service was not nice, glasses remained empty just a little too long. Food took a long time, no bread on the table. We took the chef's menu, the first two dishes took a very long time and then everything came together too quickly. During dessert we were suddenly told that our time was up and whether we wanted to pay and leave. Ridiculous and for a fairly high price.

A real hit, everything we ate was amazing. For someone that doesn’t eat seafood, I was glad there were a few options for me. The bread with smoked butter is addictive, and the pommes fondantes (potatoes) are an absolute must! The only suggestion is have 1-2 more non-seafood options for people like me.

Gertrude is one of my favourite dinner spots in Amsterdam! This is the place I take my friends and family when they come to visit to show them what amazing food the city has to offer. And the restaurant atmosphere is super cozy and romantic. I’ve been here three times and I’ll continue to come back again and again.

Delicious food, good staff and nice atmosphere

We ordered three starters, which were quite expensive. The dishes were ridiculously small. The couple at the table next to us ordered three baskets of bread with their starters! The selection of main courses is very small (three). We decided not to order main courses and continued eating elsewhere.

Allereerst valt hier de fijne sfeer en het superattente personeel op. De uitstraling is die van een Franse bistro. Kroonluchters, wit linnen op de tafels, kaarsen, vintage servies en thonetstoelen ( zonder kussens niet echt gerieflijk). We worden hartelijk ontvangen en krijgen meteen een schaaltje miniolijfjes en water op tafel ( onbeperkt:€3 pp). We kiezen het menu van de chef en dat waren verfijnde, heerlijke gerechtjes. Ik had niet gezegd dat ik geen varkensvlees eet en we kregen buikspek. Ik gaf het aan mijn tafelgenoten. Dat werd opgemerkt en ik kreeg alsnog heerlijke tonijntartaar! Wat opviel was dat nergens koolhydraten voorkwamen. Dat maakt het licht, maar voor de mannen misschien iets te. Je kunt er natuurlijk brood of aardappeltjes bij bestellen. Het dessert was verrassend: chocolademousse met bloedsinaasappel. Het bloedsinaasappelijs had een pepertje dat wij iets te dominant vonden en de chocolademousse had iets puurder en minder zoet mogen zijn. De wachttijd tussen de gerechtjes is perfect. €60 voor het 5-gangenmenu vind ik een prima prijs-kwaliteitverhouding. Dat vind ik van de wijn niet. Meer dan €10,- voor een glas niet-bijzondere crémant is buitensporig. Alle andere wijnen per glas, - wij proefden er 3-, waren ook niet bijzonder en veel te hoog geprijsd. (Vanaf €8 )Dat laatste is eigenlijk de enige reden waarom ik dit bezoek geen 5 sterren waard vond. Verder hebben we een heerlijke en gezellige avond gehad.

My friend and I had a wonderful evening at Gertrude's. Together we opted for the 'chef's menu'. This is really recommended. Delicious dishes with matching wines. The atmosphere is great and the service is very friendly.

Oh Dios. Elegí este restaurante como sorpresa para 2 amigos en una noche especial basada en buenas críticas, pero desde el momento en que llegamos fue deslucido. Nuestra experiencia comenzó con estar sentado justo al lado de la puerta con mi espalda CONTRA la cortina de entrada - en la fría primavera de Amsterdam. Sentimos que nos habían apretado en una mesa extra en sí apretado en una esquina Sin embargo, después de solicitar pasar a una mesa vacía, finalmente nos volvimos a sentar afortunadamente. Luego vino el vino. Un restaurante como este necesita un sumiller y la falta era notable. Seleccionamos un vino más ligero para comenzar y luego tomamos una recomendación sobre un tinto más pesado para el plato principal. Cuando probamos el segundo vino era débil y ácido y similar al primer vino. Después de alguna discusión acordaron permitirnos recoger un vino diferente, pero la actitud del personal era arrogante y como si estuviéramos perdiendo su tiempo. Realmente desagradable sufrir esta actitud en una noche especial, pero tristemente leyendo otras críticas esto parece un problema perenne para este restaurante. Lo mejor fue la comida que era en general sabrosa e interesante a pesar de que las porciones eran pequeñas - la única excepción a esto fue el plato de col rizada asada / carbonizada que era como comer col rizada (poco inspiradora) y un poco de salsa debajo. Al borde de lo desagradable, fue afortunadamente la excepción a la buena comida. El punto culminante para mí fue que durante la noche el camarero que teníamos que nos hablaba en inglés, cambió a holandés para hablar de mí con uno de mis amigos holandeses. Esto es simplemente grosero, pero es solo síntoma de la arrogancia que impregna este restaurante. Todavía tuve una noche maravillosa con mis amigos, pero no gracias a gertRUDE!

Even though chef Amadou was not present, we once again had a delicious meal. As a fan of Trees I wanted to go back to the source ;) It's a shame that the tables are so close together and you have to keep eating because of the time slot. But the dishes were all finger licking good. With Amadou's clear, inventive signature.

Had a lunch yersterday and we were helped by 2 different personnel. None of them showed us a bottle lebel to us - we had Prosecco and wine. I thought it’s a norm to show it first to the customer or at least to turn the bottle in the way you see what you actually getting. Also not appreciated the chipped plates. Style could be vintage but not chipped

One of the best meal I ever had. Very interesting menu and the ingredients perfectly cooked and seasoned. Great atmosphere. Service was excellent. I hope this restaurant gets the recognition they deserve.
