Gertrude Rest. & Bar in Helmersbuurt

We enjoyed an extensive lunch for a birthday celebration. They serve three courses from the five-course chef's menu for lunch. There was also the option to extend this with a course from the à la carte menu. The waiter who assisted us was friendly and helped us with the wine selection. The wine list is extensive and features some surprising wines, such as a Chenin Blanc from the Loire by Jacky Blot and a Negocese Gamay from La Bohème, Super B, from the Auvergne. We had reserved a table inside, but due to the beautiful weather, we were able to sit outside. You sit on the sidewalk here, but it is a pleasantly spacious terrace on a quiet street. We had a delicious meal and a wonderful afternoon. We will definitely be back.

I had a salmon trout, and my friend had a deer steak. They were so good.

Great atmosphere and service, but unfortunately the food was very salty, we ordered the fish of the day, potatoes and bimi salad, but everything was too salty and therefore not really enjoyable. But the ambiance was lovely!

A nice place to try out. I went for a light dinner and it was worth it. The restaurant is small but cozy, the interiors, lighting and music support each other, which create a great setting. Quite sad that the in-house was full so I have to seat at their terrace, also nice as the restaurant is located in a nice neighborhood area, at that time, the heater is broken so a bit cold but I think will be nice in the summer Their service is fast and attentive, I ordered the fish cake and catch of the day. The fish cake is quite nice with the honey soy glaze, but too sweet for me, and it was overshadow the fish cake. I wish they could reduce the sweetness and maybe add more flavor to the fish cake, more dill or any spices would be nice. For the main, I have the plaice, not a big fish fan but gotta say the fish is good. My friend got the duck, and it was also nice. Overall, the experience is nice, nothing too special, a plus for the ambiance.

This place is such a local gem. The food is incredible, team is awesome, space is cool and the whole atmosphere has an incredible vibe. We feel lucky to have ended a great trip to Amsterdam at this lovely spot. Shout out to our fantastic server - young guy from London.

Gertrude is a marvelous little restaurant with great food and a wonderful atmosphere. We had the 5 plate chefs menu which was so good. Dishes were spaced out well so that we didn’t feel rushed and the wine was good despite being one of the less expensive on the menu. I would definitely recommend

I had a really wonderful experience here as a solo traveller. Firstly, I always appreciate when a place is flexible - I showed up on a busy night without a reservation and they made space for me even though they were fully booked. The staff were all extremely attentive and friendly - one even let me use her phone as a hotspot because they don’t have WiFi. The tasting menu was great, as were the wines. The dishes took a while to come out, which I expected give that they made space to serve me despite the fact that they were fully booked for the evening. I wasn’t in a hurry and, in fact, taking it slow I probably enjoyed the experience more. Many thanks!

Cute local dinner spot with buzzy atmosphere and friendly service - we had a delicious value for money tasting menu. Loses a star as think a couple of the dishes were a little over complicated & would have been better as slightly 'less', and tables quite tight together, but would def go again when in AMS.

Lovely lovely meal. Thank you. 💗 only negative was that a vegetarian at our table was not offered an alternative to a dish served to the rest of the table. But for the rest very good service and very good food.

We came last night and whilst the restaurant itself was cute and cozy, I just cannot get over how rude our waitress was. She literally rolled her eyes at us when we tried to order more food, and then at the end came up to us and said she’d heard us talking and was it about her. It was about work and I just found it such a confrontational thing to do. I was in shock. The food was delicious but portion sizes very small and they only had two sides on the menu, one of which they had already run out of when we arrived at 7pm. I will not be returning back or advising others to go to this restaurant.

We are visiting Amsterdam for the first time, coming from the US, and we booked Restaurant Gertrude for our first dinner in The Netherlands. We are fairly opinionated NYC foodies, and our dinner was fantastic. We had the five course chef’s meal (very reasonably priced) and every course was its own little diamond - the food was fresh, delicate, subtle and very inventively conceived and prepared. The meal was utterly delightful and memorable. The room is charming, unpretentious, and feels like it dropped into Amsterdam from NYC’s West Village. The service was charming and professional and the staff was clearly passionate about everything they served. Kudos to all. Gertrude gets our highest recommendation.

Inspired menu options and curated combinations. Beautifully presented. Charming and welcoming ambiance. Service was a bit unpredictable throughout meal. Time lag between main and dessert was painfully long- all the while the next people with reservations for our table waited as we waited. Overall very good experience. Would go again. Prices were a bit on the higher side. Wine pours are small and the one Italian Red glass I chose was mediocre.

It was okay? Maybe a rough start as we had booked two tables of two and made a note to be seated together but front of house hadn't noted it, so when we arrived, there was no option for us to seat together. We were offered a table outside, but it started raining heavily 15 minutes later and I had to beg to be seated inside - which to her credit, the staff member managed but we were squeezed near the kitchen. All this could have been avoided if they just read their booking notes. Some dishes were really interesting, while others fell a bit flat. The tuna was very innovative, the fish cakes and asparagus were nicely executed classics. The mushroom sauce was very oversalted, and desserts were lacklustre. Nice wine list and very cutesy dining room. The service leaves a lot to be desired and the waitress kept pushing for us to order the set menu even though I mentioned several times that I wanted to order ala carte. Update: the restaurant did not try to contact me to discuss my experience despite me following up via email.

Went with my husband when we were visiting Amsterdam- we had a reservation. We were seated at our table but were not given water or menus. We asked for them 15 minutes later. Had the fishcakes which were delicious - also got the asparagus. Had the lamb as a main which was tender. Food was good, service not so much.

The waitresses were friendly but completely overwhelmed, resulting in very slow service. The dishes were average; €29 for a cold, uninteresting lamb dish served cold.

Very romantic and cozy spot with good music. Small portions but tasty dishes. The catch of the day was delicious but the bread and butter leaves you a little bit disappointed. The ganache was the perfect conclusion. The service was kind but slow.

My friends and I had the chef’s menu with the wine pairing, and everything was excellent. The staff were very welcoming, and the atmosphere felt warm and homely.

In short: the food was delicious, but the place was empty and the service left something to be desired. I had lunch there yesterday and the barmaid spent about the entire afternoon kissing and cuddling with her boyfriend (who was sitting at the bar). She paid no attention to the people sitting in the place (and only three small tables were occupied, so it was quite manageable). Two ladies next to us are regulars at Gertrude's but had to wave at least 30 times to get attention. Ordered water, but it didn't come. She was too busy with her boyfriend. Two of the three full tables eventually left in irritation. Something was also said to the lady about how this is obviously unacceptable when you are working. Unfortunately, Gertrude is no longer what it used to be.

Gertrude is highly recommended. Every dish served in the 5-course menu was delicious. Excellent value for money, friendly service, tasty drinks, and a very cozy decor and atmosphere. Absolutely nothing to complain about. Thank you for a wonderful evening!

We booked here after having such a lovely meal the first time we visited Amsterdam, but this time we took our family along with us. Everyone had the best time, loved the food, the atmosphere, the wine and it all felt like good value for what you got. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and we didn't feel rushed at all. Such a gem of a restaurant and if you're visiting Amsterdam, we highly recommend booking in advance so you don't miss out!

We ate and drank very well. A candlelit bistro, contemporary European cuisine with a focus on French cuisine. A truly interesting wine list. The service was excellent. The waitress who served us was truly kind and affable, and she took care of us with great professionalism. A lovely evening.

Been for the first time here with some friends and we all had the chef menu. Food was just great and offered surprising pairing. The atmosphere is cozy and we all loved how researched food and beverage matched the informal and warm environment. Service was top notch.

Most of the dishes were really delicious but we had food poisoning from the oysters. However, we really appreciated how the restaurant handled the situation. They were really attentive about the situation.

Amazing food, perfect service and great location!

My date and I both had the Fish Cakes and we both ordered the Pork Belly and then shared the Chocolate, Fig with Olive oil desert. The fish cakes were very good and a nice portion. The pork belly is perhaps the best I’ve ever had although, I’d forgo the pancetta as it was too salty but again the pork belly itself which was served with a perfectly cooked scallop was sublime. The desert was a miss for me. It was a kind of mousse that I think could have used some tempering. It was served with fresh figs and also fig jam or compote which was too much fig and the dish was missing the olive oil. The other complaint I would make is that I ordered bread and butter and I am fine to pay for it but it was not nearly enough for the meal. So when asking for a bit more bread you are charged again for 1/4 of a baguette and a tab of the most basic butter, not smoked butter as the menu online says. The service was really lovely. The ambiance excellent. The whole feeling of the restaurant and the care that is going into the dishes is really felt. I will surely return. If I could give 4.5 instead of 4 I would.

Gertrude never seizes to amaze us with their amazing food and great service. Though a small menu it caters to all and the quality of the products they use is simply the best. This in combination with great atmosphere, which is intimate and cozy, I highly recommend Gertrude to everyone who is in for a high quality lunch or dinner in a quiet and low key atmosphere with friendly service.

Great place. Lovely staff kudos to Felix and Tygo. Al la carte and 5 star chef's menu. Food is amazing. Meat, fish and vegi options. They switch menu every 2 to 3 months. They also have a great wine menu. With less known wines. Make a reservation because it can be very busy. I summer there is a nice terrace. I have Tinnitus and the acoustic is also nice if it is not to busy.

The service in this restaurant is worst at best. I wanted to have a glass of wine by myself before going to a dinner so I called for a reservation and they said walk in is okay and that there’s available table to sit outside. When I arrived, the waiter said there’s only tables inside available (I left after an hour and outside tables were not full) so okay whatever. I sat down and I was not even asked what I wanted for more than 5mins when the restaurant was not busy at all. Didn’t even offer water when he took my order. Treated the other table with white women way faster and better when they arrived. Never going to this restaurant again.

Gertrude’s is a lovely neighbourhood restaurant with just the right cozy vibe for a chilly January evening. We had the chef’s menu, which the waiting staff kindly helped to adjust to our pescatarian palates and it was outstanding. Very inventive with flavour combinations we had never tried before. This restaurant is like a warm hug. We loved it.

The restaurant is really cozy, atmosphere nice and intimate and food was incredibly tasty with good portions as well. I loved to have the choice between menu and a-la-carte. Prices in line with Amsterdam. Waitresses were lovely, very attentive and prepared. The only two downsides were the acoustic of the place, as it's quite noisy when it's full and it's difficult to talk and also they could serve a little bit more wine in the glass. But overall definitely highly recommended and will come back for sure.

The food was excellent except the main courses of cod and of deer were somewhat disappointing. Deer had grizzle throughout and was tough. Should be tender. Everything else was wonderful.

Not worth the money. The food was very tasty, and the plates were of a decent size, but the restaurant's "vintage" vibe is just a nice of way of saying that the place looks abandoned and in need of repair. The bathroom entrance was disgusting, with stairs in the middle of the hallway, and the smell of the sewage leaked into the dining area. If you're going to charge €40 for a chicken that comes with bone and vegetables that needs to be cut to be eaten, the least you can do is to have a knife that actually cuts. Staff was lovely, but the owner really need to get their stuff together.

Third time at Gertrude, and it was simply fantastic once again. We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and had a perfect evening: excellent food, attentive and friendly staff, and a wonderful ambiance. We can’t wait to come back—highly recommended.

We sometimes go for lunch but this year we went all in on Christmas day, with a 7 course meal accompanied by delicious wine. Always love the food, the service and the decor. One of the best additions to the neighborhood!

Ko In the beautiful Bosboom Toussaintstraat, we were warmly welcomed upon entering Restaurant Gertrude, making us feel immediately at ease. We had made a reservation for the Boxing Day Christmas package at this charming restaurant. It was a revelation to enjoy the delicious dishes with a wonderful wine list. It was a wonderful evening for us, and hats off to the excellent service. IN SHORT, I GIVE 5 STARS and highly recommend you, just like us, to experience this adventure. .

An intimate and cozy restaurant, quite trendy, with a really pleasant atmosphere. We dined at the bar, which always adds a nice touch. The concept of small plates to share works very well: the food is flavorful and well-prepared. We ordered wine by the glass on the server's recommendation, a good one, but be aware that the prices are high and not listed on the menu. Otherwise, a great experience: I recommend it.

One of the best meals I’ve had in years. Excellent service and great dishes with an unusual twist. The leeks and the pig cheeks were my two favourites. A strong recommend. The chef’s menu was excellent value and comprised perfectly sized dishes. Cool place - traditional but with a great soundtrack playing the background.

Last Saturday we had a delicious meal at the bar of that lovely, cozy restaurant.

Enjoyed the chef's menu! (5 courses, €65). Highlights were the fish cakes, the pork cheek, and the wild duck. Surprising flavors in a charming old French setting. The service was very friendly, especially considering it was busy, and there were only two of them. The pace is a bit high, however, because they only allow a two-hour reservation. This means there's relatively little time between courses, making a five-course menu actually too much. With this reservation time, a four-course menu would be more suitable. In that case, the reservation time should be extended.

We had a fantastic time with Sophie behind the bar; she recommended a delicious Chardonnay that we thoroughly enjoyed. It's a lovely place with incredibly friendly, attentive service!

The reception was immediately negative, with a curt and unfriendly response to a polite inquiry about our table. Then, smaller groups were seated at a larger table, which we weren't allowed to move to because we'd be running out of time. We were eventually promised we could stay the entire evening. Yet, shortly after, we were asked to hurry up to make room for a new group. Communication and service are clearly lacking here!

never treated so badly by a restaurant before. the Dutch blond lady is lowkey racist. She was nice to everyone except us because we were the only Asians in the room i guess. Forced us (a group of 3) to sit in a tiny table although let a White couple sit at a table for 4 people with the excuse that we can have the table for the night because we booked it and the other big tables we can only stay until 8, but at 8:05 they literally kicked us out because another group of guests were waiting. “sorry guys but they are here”. ??? what? you told us differently. and this racist dutch lady also slammed the door into our faces after we got out, feeling shocked about what just happened. horrible and disgusting behaviours.

The service was not good with inconsistent information provided to us, coupled with the female waitress’ initial rude attitude. 1. When we first came in at 5.30, she did not smile and immediately told us there is only one place available for us, and we cannot use other tables. If we want another table, we would has shorter time. She did not clarify that shorter time means 8 so we did not change the table, but still the atmosphere already feels off for us. 2. We then tried to enjoy the meal, and then we saw a 4-people table were seated with 2 people, so we asked another waiter why couldn’t we be seated there, and then he informed us that table is only until 8pm, and our table is for the whole night. There was also some mix-up with another reservation but I could not verify, which led to their inconsistent table assigment. Also, the liver pate that is supposed to compliment the duck dish was served late 3. Then, after we had paid and were waiting for our Uber, anothet waiter asked us to leave because another group was “right outside the door”, even though it was cold outside and we were still waiting for our driver to arrive. 4. When we left, I leave the door open for the next guests to come in, but they didn’t, and the waitress just slammed it hard, making us feel very unwelcome.

An atmospheric restaurant with an excellent wine list and delicious menu, I recommend trying it.

We paid a visit at Gertrude last night for dinner, as it was recommended by so many friends. We got a nice table inside the restaurant, the decor, the details, the service were outstanding. We ordered the chef’s menu and the food was good, but maybe I was expecting a bit more good quality food and tasty, but it was ok. The service was super good, considering that the customer service in Amsterdam is famous for being poorly, the one in Gertrude was super good. I would come back, but maybe for the à la carte menu.

I'm very sorry that I wasted my time and money in this restaurant. Very noisy, very crowded (the visitors sat like sardines in a barrel, on each other’s heads. I came to relax and enjoy delicious food (I thought the cuisine here was good), but I was very disappointed with my choice. The food is very ordinary, but with a pretense of originality. Plates with chipped edges. The prices are not low, and the service is so-so. But the highlight of my evening was the coffee we ordered at the end of dinner. They literally threw it on our table. No saucers, no sugar and milk. and didn’t put any candy or cookies Photo attached. You can see spilled coffee stains on the tablecloth, that's how the coffee was served If you want to ruin your evening, go to this restaurant

The most innovative and surprising menu I have witnessed in many years. Tastes and combinations that look strange on paper but truly work. Cauliflower with rose water for example... squid that tasted like a carbonara... truly special .

The food was very tasty, and while the portions were a little on the smaller side, it was adequate and very tasty and very well prepared. They are very meticulous about presentation, and the best part about this restaurant is that the service is impeccable. The servers are kind, attentive, personable, and extremely professional. We went there twice and each time it was a wonderful experience. It’s small and cozy and has a sit down bar and I would definitely go there again. The menu is more vegetarian and not a lot of meat options, but that was perfect for us. It seems very healthy again, the food tasted delicious. !!!!

Gertrude is a very pretty restaurant; the interior decor is gorgeous, and the outside seating area is quite nice too. I like the artwork on the walls. I also thought the silverware was very precious. I like it when a restaurant demonstrates attention to detail in such ways. However, like many spots in Amsterdam, the beauty and chic presentation don’t quite carry through to the food itself. The food was a disappointment. We started with the highly lauded fish cakes. Average. Not bad, but nothing special either. I personally enjoy the conventional Thai fish cakes much more. Next, we got the aubergine side. It just tasted like plain eggplant cooked on oil. There was a thin green sauce underneath that added nothing, in my opinion. The biggest disappointment of the meal, by far, was the catch of the day. This was sea bass, which is probably my favorite fish. It tasted more like "purchase of the day from the frozen section at Albert Heijn". I've had a lot of sea bass in my life, and this one was very clearly not fresh. It was served with a tarragon (I think) emulsion, which I thought was a pretty bad complement for sea bass. The side of fries was also really bad. The only thing I tasted was vegetable oil. Pretty hard to mess up, but unfortunately they got it wrong. The service was mediocre. They were attentive at first, but then our fries were forgotten and brought later when we reminded them. I also had to work really hard to catch someone's attention and remind them twice that I was trying to pay. I will not be going back — definitely not worth it for me!

Right on target! Personal and pleasant atmosphere with everything you could want from a well-established neighborhood restaurant. Quite expensive - but worth it. Narrow cocktail selection but nothing that disturbed the overall experience. Large selection of wines by the glass, we went for a bottle of Pinot Noir from Burgundy which was light and cherry. Perfect with my vegetarian main course. Don't miss the crabcakes for snacks!

This venue was beyond expectation. The service staff were clearly trained to the highest standard. Bringing a delightful smile at every interaction. The food is as higher quality as any Michelin restaurant. The chef even coming to our table to explain the complexity of his creation. Thank you team Gertrude. You made our evening wonderfull.
