This used to be one of my favorite Japanese places in Amsterdam but my recent visit was not good :( I don’t know if it was just a bad day or ownership has changed but portions seem to have gotten smaller for the price you’re paying and the quality of them also are not memorable. The aubergine was actually so smoky that it was inedible. Sad!

With pain in my heart, I cannot recommend this place. It’s been on my starred list for years, as I go to Japan about twice a year, and this restaurant has been recommended to me as an authentic izakaya style experience. Firstly, we came in a bit early on a Friday, and they seated us right next to another couple enjoying their dinner, while most of the restaurant was empty. Secondly, you must order with a QR code, which isn’t a bad thing in itself, but for the prices this place has, it feels a bit impersonal (read this in another review and it hit the nail on the head). Thirdly, the prices. A very small cup of kimchi was priced at 8 euros and some change. Our final bill came out to well over 150 euros for two people, while the quality was very average. Fourthly, the service. Tsukune (chicken meatballs) is one of my favorite yakitori skewers to eat in Japan. Normally it is served with raw egg, but that wasn’t served here. I understand that given it might not be something for foreigners. However, when I asked for Japanese mustard (karashi), one waitress never got back to us and I had to ask again. Another waitress did eventually deliver, but it seemed like a request that they don’t normally get. We also ordered something that we simply didn’t like, and once the waitress came to deliver more dishes, we asked her to just take it because it wasn’t good. No questions, no remarks. Really surprising. One positive I can give this place is the quality of their lemon chuhai (lemon sour). My favorite drink in Japan. I was happy to enjoy it in my own city.

I’ve visited Hakata multiple times and have always enjoyed the food; the quality and taste are consistently good. However, during my last visit, I was quite disappointed by the pricing and portion sizes both for the mains & sides. Charging €8 for a small side of kimchi felt like a rip-off, especially since the serving was less than half the size shown on the menu. Ramen portions are most probably half of what you can get elsewhere in a ramen chain in Amsterdam albeit with similar price tags. Despite raising the issue and expressing my frustration on the issue around the Kimchi, the restaurant refused to take it off the bill. I would have expected a gesture from them as part of their service.

A complete embarrassment masquerading as a Japanese restaurant. The only premium thing here is the pricing. Everything else belongs below street-food level. The “medium fatty tuna” (€23) was packed with sinew, chewy, stringy, and unpleasant from the first bite. Calling that chutoro is dishonest. Then came the yakitori: €6 per skewer for food burnt so badly it left a charred taste in the mouth long after leaving the restaurant. Dry meat, blackened vegetables, bitter flavor, zero care. It genuinely felt like eating mistakes that should have been thrown away instead of served. Yes, ordering by QR code is easy and the food comes fast. That’s not efficiency — that’s speed-running low-quality food to the table before you notice how bad it is. This place charges relatively high prices for food that wouldn’t survive in an honest street stall. Have been to food stands that serve better food with more pride and skill. Amsterdam has far better Japanese restaurants. This one survives on branding, location, and people who haven’t tasted better yet. Avoid.

This is an Amsterdam version of an Izakaya with Robuta Grill that I frequent in Japan. They have a varied menu, ordering goes by QR code, although the staff will take refill drinks, and last orders. All in all it is enjoyable and good food. The different chicken skewers are probably the best; we found the iberico pork to be incredibly though, unlike elsewhere. Some of the specials where outstanding, the spare-ribs very "beige". It's probably 20% too expensive for what it is and delivers, similar places in Düsseldorf offer a better run for your money and you can find dozens of places in Japan, Singapore or Bangkok that deliver the same concept but way better food for perhaps a quarter of the price here. In Tokyo itself this wouldn't have lasted 20-years, but for Amsterdam it does its job I guess....

Food was nice. Staff did not speak any Dutch. There was no green tea. Tables where very crammed together. There is a QR code stuck to the table where you make your orders. Previous to our visit we made a reservation. Upon arrival we learned that we could only stay for max 2 hrs… non of the other tables where treated the same! the waitress kept on reminding us about that fact and that there was an end time to our dinner. She did not offer us any solution about staying longer at another table, she just wanted us out the door as fast al possible.

It's been busy recently and we suddenly couldn't make a reservation, so this was our first visit in a year. It can't be helped that ordering has now switched entirely to QR codes. However, the table we were shown to was at the very back of the restaurant, and two out of three people couldn't scan the QR code. The staff insisted on QR codes, which was unpleasant. The restaurant should have understood the poor reception and posted a sign that WIFI was available without us being told. Furthermore, the taste was clearly worse than when I last visited. The signature yakitori was cooked by an amateur, and was burnt and dry. As the restaurant has become more popular, the taste has become more like the local area, and it's a shame that it no longer has the same deliciousness I felt a year ago.

I was really looking forward to visiting this place, I had it on my list for a long time, but unfortunately we didn't have the best experience... We waited quite a bit for our snacks, which was understandable with a big group dining that night, but when more than an hour of waiting hit for our ramen, I started to get a bit impatient. The kitchen forgot our order and the ramen we were served definitely didn't live up to expectations. On top of that the very strong smell from the grill and laudness all over were not adding to the atmosphere. I would not be coming back as for that pricetag I have much better options in Den Haag :( That said: even though I rated service low, the servers were very kind and tried their best in that situation

We love Japanese food but this place didn’t really hit the mark. Most dishes were not particularly flavorful, the portions were tiny, the seating cramped and uncomfortable, and the service rushed. Actually, you couldn’t even call it service as you had to order from your phone via a QR code on your table. This felt impersonal and unnecessary for a small restaurant like this, and it further contributed to what we experienced as an overall unpleasant atmosphere. Considering the high prices for food and drink, there’s simply no reason to come back or recommend this place, unfortunately.

Super expensive for tiny tiny portions. 1 small skewer, 6e+-. "Main dish" is a very small portion, order 3 if you are hungry. "Shared dinning" means pay entree price for a bite not to share but order tons. Really feels like this place is only for the conference center as there isn't even typical table service. You order online and they just drop it on the table. Also brought a heavy pork ramen with egg instead of the vegan soup as ordered. Just across the board surprising. Had high hopes and place looks great. Actual flavor is good, I'm just starved and paid a lot too. Very expensive drinks for Amsterdam too. They served fried chicken with basic mayo for the sauce. Need I say more??? Who-wants-fried chicken with mayo?!?! Give me flavor, not more fats. Checked with my group, everyone left hungry but was too kind to say in the moment.

After a long time we went to our favorite yakitori shop in Amsterdam. The new online ordering did not really worked with us. But the food was good as it used to be. They now had a new system of only 2 hours to eat (instead of staying till closing time how it was) the staff was really pushy at the end, already cleaning our table and putting the bill on the table urging us to go because the new round of people were ariving. The food was pretty decent, especially the skewers, except that the sashimi tastes a bit watery like it’s defrosted. There was one Caucasian waitress that was very friendly and super attentive. But the Japanese staff, especially the older male one, were clearly overwhelmed, rude and very chaotic. They showed 0 welcome to customers and 0 competence to work in gastronomy. The place was also very crowded. If you don’t have enough staff to serve, reduce the tables. It makes the experience even worse.

Often, money is not hard at all to earn but the chance is always reserved for those who are BOLD to fool customers sufficiently. Why you reckon that no Japanese cuisine lovers from the original and adjacent region are living in Amsterdam, or, to expand to the whole Netherlands? I saw a recommendation from a JAPANESE website giving out an anthology of authentic Japanese which strongly recommends here, but… Torikawa(Chicken Skin) are burnt like char, and 1800 yen was charged for ONE STUCK?? What’s more, cabbages and onion slices were present around 30% in a bowl of Ramen?? I was indeed shocked and speechless about such refinement! Please, as you’re still utilizing Japanese on plaque above entrance and in menus, do not let your cuisines off the track.

We had made a reservation for two people with a €30 deposit. Upon arrival, we were assigned a "bar seat," where you usually sit alone before going to your table. This was our intended dining spot. It wasn't ideal, but it was okay. However, the noise level in this small restaurant was uncomfortably high; you could barely hear each other or the staff. The staff seemed inexperienced and only spoke English. Ordering is done via a QR link, but some menus weren't available. Ordering drinks from a staff member took a long time; we didn't even receive them. For these reasons, we decided to leave early and, after ten minutes of unpleasant haggling at the bar (where they pretended not to know how to do it), we got our deposit back. We then walked a bit further to Sapporo and had a pleasant evening with delicious food.

The food here is simply amazing. Their specialty is yakitori swekers, and they are masters at it. We had several swekers, a couple of side dishes, and a bottle of great sake. I would go back in a minute. The only downside is that ordering doesn't always go smoothly as you have to do it from an app that sometimes malfunctions. While we were there the system was down for some minutes and nobody could order anything, and there was already an expensive bottle of sake already logged in our account before we even began to order. This restaurant has long been a favorite dinner spot for my family. I have visited at least 6–8 times in the past year and always enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was very disappointing. The quality of service seems to be declining with every visit. There is a high turnover of staff, and many new servers don’t even seem familiar with the menu or dishes. The ordering system is clearly not functioning properly—our orders were either lost or delivered in the wrong sequence, with dishes arriving out of order (for example, rice arriving separately, while meat was served together with dessert). The biggest frustration came when it was time to pay. My payment was mistakenly charged to the wrong table number, and I was asked to pay again with the promise of a refund within 2 days. Despite sending 10 emails, it took 7 days to finally receive the refund. At no point did I feel there was a sincere apology or any effort to acknowledge and rectify the frustration caused to the customer. On top of this, the restaurant has changed its pricing strategy. It used to offer a good dining experience at the right value, but now the prices are approaching Omakase-level fine dining while the service quality has dropped and the overall atmosphere feels run-down. For a restaurant I once considered my family’s go-to, this experience was disheartening. I truly hope management takes these issues seriously and works to restore both the service quality and the value that once made this place special.

Delicious food. You simply choose which skewers you want and the accompanying dishes. You can set your own price. However, it is pricey, and a full meal will cost you quite a bit. Your clothes smell of smoke from all the grilling (which you have to accept). Service is hard to come by - you have to ask for everything, and ordering through the app isn't always easy. You only get a small portion of everything once they've prepared it. However, the food is worth 4-5 stars.

We had a delicious meal with a group of four (we booked in advance). We ordered a variety of skewers, and they were all delicious and well-seasoned. My favorite was the Buta Bara and Buta Miso (pork belly skewer). We ordered those again later. The chicken skin was also very tasty. Initially, the food arrived quite quickly, but as it got busier, it took a while for new orders (mainly skewers) to arrive. So keep that in mind. They also forgot one order at the end, but after a while, we let them know and they got it almost immediately. A nice place with a beautiful open kitchen. If you like Japanese food and meat, this is highly recommended.

This restaurant is unfortunately overrated. I didn't have a good experience here and it was not worth the money. I went there with 2 people on a Saturday evening. We sat down near the entrance and we started to smell something unpleasant (not sure where it came from, but it smelled like the sewer), so I asked a waitress if we could move to another table. She said they were fully booked and changing the table was not possible and she didn't investigate further where the smell was coming from. We decided to stay anyway as we were quite hungry. Food also took a very long time to arrive (starters and main course). One of us had to wait 15 min longer than the others before she got her main course. The food tasted quite average for the price. Once we finished our food and asked for the bill. The waitress came with the bill and immediately with the pin device. I had to ask her to leave us a min to look at the bill when we found that the price of our drink was filled in wrongly (higher than written in the menu). The other waitress fixed the bill and we paid and right after we paid, the waitress asked us to leave because some people were waiting for our table (is this normal in the Netherlands?). In summary, I would not recommend this place as you can find this food quality with a much better price and service and better atmosphere than this place.

I was here with my boyfriend and honestly it was terrible. We waited over an hour for our food and nobody said anything. Just ignored us like it’s normal to wait forever. I ordered the wagyu beef – except it was not wagyu. I know what wagyu is supposed to be. This was just regular dry meat, nothing special. Chewy, no flavor, very disappointing. We also ordered wine and they bring us half glasses. Literally half. Not even pretending to fill it. Also we ordered tap water, never arrived. Staff looked tired and didn’t care. No smile, no apology, no checking if everything was okay. Spoiled the whole evening. We left hungry, annoyed, and euros poorer. Never again. Total waste.

NB: I’ve been accused of writing a fake review, but as proof, I’ve included my reservation and payment confirmation (not including my 75 euro downpayment) from the restaurant. Our daughter's successful exam results called for a celebration, and we decided to do it in this place due to our love for Japanese cuisine and the positive reviews that surround it. Being a beautiful, warm day, we anticipated that many families might want to dine outdoors. In light of this, I chose to reserve an outdoor spot through their website, which obliged me to make a €75 down payment. However, upon arrival, we were disappointed to learn that due to an alleged system error, our reservation didn't exist. According to them, our reservation was double-booked. However, having worked in IT for years, I highly doubt the system is at fault. It seemed more likely that there was poor management on their part, perhaps allowing some guests to occupy the tables longer than allowed, or granting seats to those without a reservation. For a Japanese-inspired restaurant, we expected them to go above and beyond to rectify such a situation. Unfortunately, the solution they proposed - seating us indoors - wasn't acceptable to us. We suggested we wait inside until a spot becomes available outdoors. Indeed, the interior had a truly Japanese atmosphere, but the noise level was a bit high. For people who don’t mind the din, this isn’t so bad. However, we wanted somewhere quieter where we wouldn’t have to raise our voices to converse. To further dampen our spirits, as we waited, no staff attended us for drinks; we had to actually flag someone down to get served. When we finally got an outdoor table, we ordered drinks via their electronic system, which were served promptly. However, their system then crashed, making it impossible to order food, which added to our growing discontent. We found ourselves jotting down our orders on our phones and handing them to the waiter. The system remained down even as we left. Given our Asian roots, the food didn’t overly impress us, but it was aesthetically pleasing and tasty. What was more disappointing was the staff’s decorum. We found them to be lacking in courtesy and helpfulness, unlike the many other Japanese restaurants we've visited worldwide. Shockingly, this was the first time we felt it was otherwise. Ideally, one would anticipate the restaurant to offer compensation or a small goodwill gesture, such as a complimentary tea, in response to the inconveniences we experienced. Regrettably, they did not demonstrate such courtesy. Lack of a polite thank you or goodbye from our waiter was the final nail in the coffin. It seemed to us that they were relieved at our departure, which was unfortunate. Our special night felt dampened by this less-than-satisfactory experience – a night that had all the elements to be much better.

I cannot recommend this place—the food is quite mediocre and does not justify the cost. The interior looks very simple, and the service is far from a pleasant experience. Additionally, when ordering through the QR code, dishes that appear to be available somehow do not get processed in the order, and the staff is unable to provide clear answers to your questions. The outdoor seating area is neither equipped nor decorated, consisting of the cheapest and least attractive furniture. You won't get any visual enjoyment, either indoors or outside. Moreover, the portion sizes are very small, especially for the appetizers. As expected, the restroom is not cleaned properly and resembles a low-quality diner.

Worst culinary experience I had for a decade. We waited 1 hour to receive the food, only one by one portion for 4 people. A really torturing-bad joke, where we anxiously laugh until we decided to go. Over prised, its not what it use to be.

Authentic izakaya next to the RAI - absolutely delicious! Reservation is advised. We shared our table with Japanese food experts who totally validated as well - that is a good sign!

4.4 for this spot is way too low. I rarely give a 5 overall rating (especially in Amsterdam) but this place by all means deserves it. The atmosphere and decor is great, the service is really good and the food is excellent. The pork and chicken were the stars of the show but honestly every single item ordered was delicious. Definitely recommend and will for sure be coming back.

We like this izakaya place.. was one of our favorite spots in Amsterdam. But they changed a lot, staff were no longer well managed.. food still okay, noticeable change was the portion, we had chicken nanban, portion was significantly smaller than before..We always asked for extra sauce, they used to provide with generosity, but this time they said no extra sauce unless we pay for it.. as regularly customers, it was such a bummer.. The good thing is they have more sake choices, still cozy atmosphere!

We enjoyed the food and the beer a lot. The spicy curry was good, the ramen too. The skewers and eggplant in miso glaze were also enjoyable, we regret ordering too less.

Great Cassis Oolong Sours. Like, so great. We had 3 (three!) each. I’m coming back to this review just to reiterate how _good_ the cassis oolong sours were. They were life changing. My boyfriend and I started to make these at home since coming here for dinner. In fact, we are drinking a round right now and it’s so good. Heads up, when they first brought them for us, we weren’t even sure if it had alcohol in it. Turns out, it does

Wow, that place has really gone downhill. For years, we had consistently great food and excellent, attentive service. Hadn’t been there in a while, and this visit was a major disappointment. The food quality was subpar—soggy chicken, bland sashimi, onigiri that made no sense at all, and a vegetable tempura consisting of just 3 or 4 pieces for 17 euros. The waiting staff clearly couldn’t be bothered anymore… time for some reflection…..

Super tasty food! The unagi and eggplant were fantastic as was the pork belly. Only the grilled octopus is not recommended, it was very tough. Tip: stop with the time slots. You get a very short time frame and the orders take quite a long time. That keeps you from going more often.

Too expensive for what it is, also one smells like a smoke chicken afterwards. I have been in Hakata and Hakata has the best food in Japan, this place is not coming near.

Good Japanese food and a very attractive restaurant. You can go in any direction: for a quick bite they have simple but good ramen. But you can also enjoy a hearty meal with Japanese classics such as yakitori, karaage, onigiri, gyozas, etc. Or go crazy with wagyu.

The worst dining experience I ever had. It took nearly 2 hours for our food to come out. We kept checking with the waitresses when our food is coming for many times and all of them kept assuring us that it will be there soon. None of them were able to communicate clearly to us that there was an issue with our orders and thus the food took forever to come. In addition no waitress was able to explain to us what they were serving is when they brought out the food (not even what is in the drinks).

The service was mediocre (I got the feeling that I should be happy to eat there). Didn't receive ordered meal; Took a long time for the ordered item to arrive. Payment also did not go as expected. The toilets certainly did not look like Japanese toilets (which are always clean). The staff only spoke English, strange for a Japanese restaurant.

We have been coming to Akitsu for years; generally, it is always a great experience with good, friendly service and high-quality sushi. However, my last experience here was unfortunately less than ideal in terms of service. We placed our order well in advance via WhatsApp, and so far, it has taken a very long time to receive the entire order. Others arrived after us and received their orders sooner. It is quite a shame, considering it is usually top-notch. Hopefully, they will address this to prevent it from happening again.

Delicious foods, very kind staff, I had only an hour to order but the waiter said I will do the first order and you can choose all you want. A bit pricey but worth it.
