Small restaurant but very warm atmosphere, very authentic japanese cuisine, might even be the best i've tasted from a country outside japan

Been here 5 or 6 times now and I've enjoyed the food and myself time and again. It makes me reminiscence my time in Japan and I can whole heartedly recommend this place.

Worst dining experience in amsterdam. I ordered pork cutlet and it was over cooked and the meat was not cleaned properly so it was smelly and chewy. Yellow daikon looked and tasted very old. You have lots of other options. I do not recommend it at all.

Great, authentic Japanese food in a great location. We have visited several times and each time did not disappoint. Staff are friendly, service is great and most importantly the food is made with care and delicious each time. I've tried a lot of Tonkatsu and this is the first place that serves a good quality authentic Tonkatsu. The meat is a little fatty so it stays tender and juicy and the only place that finally includes mustard.

Cute, small and authentic Japanese place in de Pijp. Don't go here if you're craving ramen or sushi as they don't have this on their menu. Food was amazing. It is small so I'd recommend to make a reservation.

Amazing food! Went there for the first time with a reservation.We got there and the table was ready for us, no wait at all. The staff was super helpful and the food was delicious, no complaints at all. Strongly recommend the Gyudon.

Amazing, I love japanese food, but usually this will mean either sushi or raven. Isshin has a whole new view of how japanese food can be like for a very good price! I really enjoyed the food and the staff were super friendly! Definitely recommend, would go again!

I love it! First time coming here, ordered the Salmon Katsu and it was big, delicious, and good price! It came with miso soup, rice, and salad too. Love it so much I will def come again! The server was so nice, polite, calm. Very nice. Food came quite fast, so happy! Highly recommended!

Very authentic, a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese, the staff is very friendly, finally got to drink Suntory corner bottle Haibolu, happy, two people ate 80 euros. I walked in with two people on Friday night, and was arranged to sit at the bar. If there are many people, remember to make a reservation.

Their teishoku was quite good and worth it for price. I got the pork tonkotsu and it came with pickled vegetables, a dumpling, miso soup, rice, and salad in the set. Tonkatsu was tasty, but slightly too thick.

I was looking for a traditional Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam and came across Isshin. I was so looking forward to try it after the reviews and videos I saw online and I was not disappointed at all: the food is amazingly tasty and authentic and the service is kind and nice. It’s a really intimate place who has the power to make you feel as if you were in Japan. Could not recommend it enough, also they have a wide choice of sake and japanese gin!

The pork chop is delicious! Recommended to eat the Iberian pig version. It tastes very similar to the loin texture you get in Taiwan.

We paid 50 EUR for two take away meals. According the their website it should have been 47 EUR (also very high prized) “We just increased our prices and therefore you need to pay 50 Eur” I paid but according to Dutch law I should have paid “only” 47 EUR. The meals were OK but due to the fact it was highly prized I will not order again. The personnel was however, very kind.

An authenthic Teshoku meal in the heart of Amsterdam. I visited this restaurant for the second time and this time ordered the salmon katsu. Salmon was perfectly cooked and not too dry while crispy on the outside.

Food is mediocre, yakatori a bit tough, meat on the bland side, gyoza ice cold, just not very special overall. Service and atmosphere are excellent and cozy.

I ordered the signature pork chop rice, and the waiting time was not short. The pork chop was not hot and a bit hard. The taste was only average, and the price was very expensive.

The place that was once a nice, small, authentic Japanese neighborhood restaurant has turned into a place where K-pop reigns supreme.

Absolutely awful experience. Hands down one of the worst customer service encounters I’ve ever had. The guy working there spilled hot miso soup all over my pants and across the food tray — and get this — he didn’t even apologize. No napkins, no concern, nothing. Then he took my chopsticks (for whatever reason) and never brought a replacement. And to top it all off, while I was in the bathroom, a waitress begged for tips from the people I was with. Totally unprofessional, borderline aggressive. The whole vibe was uncomfortable and just… bad. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else

Very bad experience. Half of the food arrived cold and the chicken was soft and had a strange texture. Not recommended. I don't understand where all these good reviews are coming from.

This place felt like a traditional Japanese restaurant, from the food to the atmosphere to the staff. We had a great time. The food was amazing, we ordered the tonkatsu and the unagi don and they were delicious. The gyoza was a bit cold, but the miso soup was one of the best i've ever had. Would definitely recommend.

Me uní a un amigo local de mucho tiempo en ISSHIN para la cena, se recomienda una reserva, pero no era necesario un domingo por la noche (pudieron trabajar en un par de mesas de dos). La camarera vino fuera de donde estaba esperando (unos 15 minutos antes de la reserva) , Inglés holandés y japonés no son ningún problema. Tuvimos un aperitivo de pollo frito seguido por el unagi que estaba delicioso. Nos saltamos el desierto (helados) y disfrutamos de un poco de té tradicional. Japonés nunca y Saki están disponibles. Excelente comida y servicio en un ambiente relajado.

Cozy atmosphere. Authentic warm Japanese food. I think they have some daily / seasonal specials - had sukiyaki yesterday and it was just the perfect comfort food for the weather!

Nice little restaurant. With sukiyaki which was delicious. We also had the unagi don, really good. The meals were good portioned and reasonably priced. I will be back to try more of the menu.

I never thought I could eat such delicious Japanese food in Amsterdam! It was so delicious!

Underwhelming. I ordered chicken katsu curry, which tasted overly sweet and flat. The chicken katsu itself lacked seasoning and was bland. My husband ordered unagi don with miso soup, and the sauce used to cook the eel was also too sweet. The miso soup wasn’t even hot, just lukewarm. We don’t understand the 5-star reviews for this place. Is it because people don’t know what good food tastes like, they can’t cook at home, or they’re just extremely hungry after exploring Amsterdam? For the price, quality, and overall experience, especially being crammed into a tiny old space where diners at nearby tables keep coughing nonstop, we don’t think it’s justified. To make things worse, I got food poisoning from their food. We really don’t understand what’s wrong with some restaurants.

we had the eel rice and the tonkotsu (fried pork) and it was incredibly delicious, and all the mochis, 5 stars - and fantastic japanese pop playlist playing in the background! there’s also a huge collection of sake to try from and the menu offers specific pairings with each dish.

This place is amazing. The foods are amazing !! Come on saturday night at 21:00, then it becomes karaoke night with japanese snacks bar time (gyoza, tantamen, unagi, takoyaki)

Great atmosphere (music, cozy lights and tables), great warm comfort food and super polite staff! I really recommend experiencing this at least once!

We had high expectation going in because of the amount of good reviews this place has. There were also Japanese people eating here, which is usually good sign that the food is high quality. Unfortunately we left the place disappointed. While the takoyaki is really good (the best I've ever had) and the yuzu beer is also really tasty, the main course is not as satisfying. I ordered the unagi-don and except for the rice (very tasty) , I didn't feel it was worth the price. The Gyoza was soggy, the soup was bland, and the unagi was too sweet for me. There was also not a lot of depth in the flavour itself. Maybe it was just a bad day for the kitchen, but I don't think I'm coming back here.

Small, cozy place for delicious Japanese meal. They serve Teishoku (set meal) and rice bowls (don). Staff is friendly and booking is recommended. You do need to pay €10 pre-payment for reservation online. When I went on Saturday, they host from 20:30 a karaoke night! The limited ribeye hotpot was also very tasty and limited portions per day! Definitely would recommend this to anyone who is a lover of Japanese cuisine.

A fairly small and down to earth Japanese restaurant. Four of us came here for lunch during our stay in Amsterdam and we liked it 👍🏼 Quiet, good service and fresh Japanese food at sensible prices ( around €150 for 4 people with alcohol)

The food at ISSHIN is very fresh and authentic. It feels like you are transported to a small restaurant in Japan but it’s hidden in De Pijp. The staff is also friendly but there is sometimes a small language barrier. Sales are also nice but would be nice if they had some Japanese beer on tap. Would recommending if you’re looking for some Japanese comfort food.

Very nice, identical and small Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam! If you like Japanese food, this restaurant is definitely recommended! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is nice. The food is a bit more pricey, but it certainly fills you up and the quality of the food is superb. It's definitely worth your money! The staff is very friendly and the food is beautifully served. We didn't notice the time because of the fun, but it turned out that the restaurant was already closing when we wanted to start with dessert and tea. The staff was kind enough to let us have another tea with dessert. This was not necessary for us, but they suggested it themselves. I'm glad I tried the dessert. The matcha mochi ice cream is delicious! Definitely recommended to eat really tasty Japanese food in a small, cozy restaurant!

Amazing quality and the decor makes you feel just like in Japan. Very tasty, but only thing I would say here is that it's pricey for the amount of food you get.

We already went there several times. The Gyu-don and Tonkatsu pork are always the menu we ordered. The tonkatsu pork is quite thick and it’s better when you eat with the dipping sauce they provide. The Gyu-don tastes like what you can find in Asia which is quite rare that you can find this taste in Europe. I really recommended these two dish. The staffs are friendly and helpful. I find that the food comes out quite slow but I can wait since it’s really good and remind me of Asia.

Ate here several times and were enthusiastic because the tonkatsu was quite close to what we eat in Japan. This time very dissatisfied: very tough because the pork was much too lean. The “breadcrumb layer” also fell off. Never had this in Japan! Finally, there is increasing adaptation to Dutch tastes and instead of cabbage there was mainly lettuce. New chef or bad day? Also sauce not the authentic sauce like in Japan. Such a shame!!

We arrived there around 5 minutes before our reservation. The staff said, "it just accidentally open. You have to wait for order after reservation time ." Then the servicer went back kitchen and they started to chat there. This is their way to welcome.

Exceptional restaurant, fair prices and traditional flavours; the restaurant offers a series of set meals of both meat and fish, with fresh ingredients. I will definitely be back to try other dishes from the menu, highly recommended.

This is my first time visiting Amsterdam, I am a big fan of Japanese food and have eaten in Japan many times! I would like to recommend this restaurant….. This restaurant is 100% authentic Japanese food🤙🏻 There are no words to describe the taste because every ingredient is good. I must emphasize!!! The rice here is the best!! I asked to buy some (not yet cooked) rice back to my country🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻 P.S. You can have extra rice for free!! What is the most special and wonderful thing!!!!!

I just ate here and it was so delicious that I'm leaving a review right away 🥢❤️ The Unagi-dong eel was so soft and the sauce was well seasoned, so it tasted the same as the one I had when I traveled to Japan. The staff is very friendly and each menu item is filled with sincerity, so I recommend it :)

Super cute, cozy and homely restaurant just outside the hustle and bustle of De Pijp. The homely atmosphere could also be tasted in the food, because it is as if a home chef had prepared it with love. They always have a changing menu depending on the season. This time we had chicken yakitori, takoyaki and karaage as a starter. All three traditional Japanese entrees were fresh and flavorful. As a main course we had three different teishoku: unagi don, tonkatsu and tonkatsu curry. We were also very pleased with these sets. Good crispy fried tonkatsu, beautifully grilled eel, and all with a number of small side dishes such as bean curd, miso soup and pickled radish. For dessert we also had three flavors of mochi ice cream: mango, zearte sesame and yuzu. These were nice and light and fresh, perfect to end our delicious dinner. The staff were also very friendly and polite. Would definitely recommend this if you want to experience Japanese food like in Japan and which isn't ramen or sushi. If I had to criticize something I would say that it can be quite noisy when the restaurant is full (which is quite quickly) and that the portions are somewhat on the small side for the price.

Real Japanese restaurant with exceptional quality food and service. It’s an amazing experience to try and you will feel like in Japan. The restaurant itself is made with a traditional touch without anything kitsch in one of the best street of the neighborhood. Highly recommended :)

Very nice and nice restaurant, it's just like being in Japan. The staff is very friendly and polite. The food is excellent. The portions are a bit smaller for the big eater, but this is also the case in Japan. I recommend trying the salmon katsu. This is a place to come again and again! 💫

Authentic and fabulous Japanese food - hidden gem in De Pijp! Best Unagi-Don (better than any in Paris which has so many Japanese restaurants including the overhyped Nodaiwa). The team running Isshin are so energetic, kind and attentive. Everything I have had here is superlatively good and I do lots of pick up as well as eat there when possible. They were so kind to accommodate us yesterday as we were getting there just before the kitchen closes - they called to take our orders while we were on our way! All 4 of us ordered different things - Unagi-Don, Chicken-katsu curry, karaage-Teishoku and Tonkatsu curry - they were all perfect taste and quality wise!! Will add photo later (my daughter took pics!)

The service and food were incredible (Karaage set and takoyaki), my friend and I really enjoyed our dinner there. This is a nice, cozy Japanese restaurant with authentic food. But, I wish they’d have oat milk option for matcha latte, not only regular and soy ones :)

I visited this spot a month after returning from Tokyo and I can tell you that this restaurant is definitely up to par with Japanese standards. The iberico cutlet was perfectly crisp, gold brown and juicy. The sidedishes served with the teishoku were amazing and flavourful. Although a bit pricey it is definitely worth visiting, the level of quality makes your say Oishii-desu!

The rice is cooked like porridge, super wet. The rest were okay, the fried pork cutlet was pretty good, the fried shrimp cutlet was average and a bit expensive.

Very overpriced for the amount and quality you get. you pay much more then 20+ euro to get a normal Japanese curry with nothing special. Also the portion was far too little for me, so left quite dissapointed for the big amount i paid.

Their Aubergine with miso was out of the world. We didn’t have a table reservation, they were super busy and yet made us a table on the bar. Really lovely hosts of the restaurant, with food that’s absolute raising standards for Japanese food without doing sushi!

Flavors are on point, however portions are really small, and the prices are very high. If you’re looking for authentic “mom and pop” Japanese food this is the place to go to. If you’re looking for a quick bite that fills you up for a nice price not so much.

Authentic pork cutlet in Amsterdam! ! It was even more delicious than the set menu restaurants in Japan. Pork is thick and tender. The clothes were just right! It was so delicious that I went to eat it twice, but the second time... I ate gyudon. The beef bowl was also very delicious. The miso soup was also delicious. The pickles that came with it were delicious and I was very satisfied. It was a Japanese owner, a Japanese chef, and it was very authentic!

Delicious sukiyaki teishoku, that’s where we came for. The broth was so flavorful and beef was very tender. The shrimp Katsu was good too.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff who unfortunately only spoke English. Definitely tasty food, but for the price the portions are very small. I still had to grab KFC after this.
