A lovely spot in Groningen to sit down for a while. Tasty food, good atmosphere, and friendly staff. I love coming here personally. 🤗

Yesterday afternoon, I visited Kaap Hoorn for the first time. I was really in the mood for an iced coffee, so I ordered one. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. The glass was completely full, but half of it was filled with ice cubes, with the rest consisting of a little bit of coffee. When the ice cubes started to melt, mostly watery coffee remained. For €6.00, I find that really way too expensive. I have ordered iced coffee at other places before, and it was always delicious: a creamy iced coffee made from coffee, milk, and ice blended together. That is why this one was all the more disappointing. When paying, I indicated that I didn't like the iced coffee and that I don't think €6.00 ​​for a glass that is half ice cubes is normal. The response was that they would pass it on and that they were sorry I wasn't satisfied. It is a shame that nothing else was done to satisfy me as a customer. This was my first visit, but unfortunately, it will also be my last. ------------------------------------------------------ Update – August 15, 2026: A week and a half ago, I drank an iced coffee at Kaap Hoorn that, unfortunately, disappointed me greatly. It contained mostly ice cubes, whereas I thought an iced coffee was always a creamy version with blended ice. Following my review, I received a polite response inviting me to come and taste their new, original iced coffee. I went back this afternoon and tasted it. It was truly delicious! That is why I also want to thank you for the polite way in which you handled and resolved my feedback. I appreciate that enormously.

I come here often and find this a great location to unwind under the palm trees by the water. There is a nice, relaxed atmosphere. I only had a drink there this time. The food varies quite a bit from not so good to good.

Had dinner there in the evening after a boat trip on the lake. The terrace was nice and busy and the meal was great. Great wines 🍷🍷🍷

When you arrive, it has no atmosphere whatsoever, but inside it is cozy and outside there is a beautiful terrace.

Nice location and decent food, but the service and ordering system are so worthless that you will never want to come back here. You are sent from pillar to post by a system of QR codes, a bar, and unfriendly staff. If you don't enjoy working in a service-oriented way (or running a hospitality business), don't work in the hospitality industry.

It was my first time here. The veal croquette tasted like nothing. The two slices of white bread felt like 80-grit sandpaper. The table next to us was doused with soft drinks by the wait staff—interns? The guests took it in good spirits. Nice place, long queue... for what, really? Afterwards, I just took a short walk around the Hoornse Plas. It seemed wiser not to get into a car immediately after this meal.

We had to wait a long time before we could order. First, we sat on the self-service terrace. This was poorly signposted from the side where we walked in. So we moved to get served at all. We moved again because it took a very long time to take our order. After going inside, we were served and ate calmly. After the meal, we wanted to have a quiet drink. But then a staff member suddenly came by again and said that no dogs were allowed there. We had already been served by several people in that spot. Nobody says anything and there is no signage about it anywhere. Extremely unfriendly. Quality and service used to be a higher priority here.

Enjoyed the cool terrace despite the high temperatures. The food was excellent. Staff forgot to bring drinks several times (probably due to the heat).

We recently had a delicious meal here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Fortunately, there was no hassle regarding outdoor or indoor reservations; you can simply take a seat wherever available. When seated outside, you feel like you are in Italy. Motorboats with waterskiers whiz past right by the water. The sunset falls beautifully over the lake. The food and drinks were very tasty and plentiful. Thankfully, the friendly waiter didn't come every five minutes to ask if we wanted another drink. The price was reasonable. In short: Don't go south to spend your holiday by a lake in Italy or France, but look for this equivalent alternative in the north. Especially now with high fuel prices. Highly recommended!

Staff mainly think of themselves. Picking out a table? Rather not. 0.0% keg empty outside all evening. Inside, the bar is cleaned on time, but they stop serving an hour before the end of the drinks. Very poor service.

Beef tip salad tough with way too much salty sauce. Club BLT: I think that's supposed to be toasted. Fries tasty though. Everything way too expensive.

Atmospheric restaurant in a beautiful spot on Lake Paterswold, with pleasant seating both indoors and outdoors. The terrace, in particular, gives a real holiday feeling in good weather (visited for the second time today and sat outside on the terrace in lovely weather 🙂). The food is tasty and the price-quality ratio is right, although the menu is not very extensive (4 stars). The service is correct, but could be a bit more enthusiastic. Plus point: ample, free parking. In short, highly recommended for a relaxed lunch or dinner by the water.

The food itself is quite tasty, but when a caterpillar crawls out of your lettuce, I've had enough. So, not washed properly beforehand!

Had lunch here with my girlfriend. We wanted to sit outside and were seated on a crowded terrace where smoking was not allowed. A little later, we wanted to have a quick smoke and saw the staff serving there as well. So I asked if we could sit here too, and that was allowed. So we moved our drinks to the other spot. Then another employee came and said that this section wasn't open because otherwise the staff would have to walk too much (it was literally 15 steps, I counted them). Sorry, but surely that's no reason. They should have chosen a different profession. Now I won't be going there anymore, and not a single euro will go there again. The food was good according to my girlfriend. I, as a person, didn't finish my meal.

The BLT club sandwich is very bad. The bread is not toasted, the chicken is dry and cold, and the sandwich is otherwise poorly filled. The atmosphere is nice; especially outside by the water, you really get that ultimate beach club feeling.

Kaaphoorn - Groningen It is a nice location to grab a drink or a bite to eat. However, that is as far as it goes. The staff is extremely unfriendly and downright antisocial. Even the manager at the time was impossible to speak to politely. It is bizarre that an establishment like this operates in this way…

Last Sunday afternoon, I had coffee and cake with a friend, and later in the afternoon, dinner. It was delicious!

All the sandwiches were delicious except for the nachos, which were burnt. We pointed this out, and they responded well; we received a new one. Unfortunately, this one was also burnt and the cheese wasn't melted. So we returned this one as well and indicated that we didn't want another one. This wasn't a problem, and it was taken off the rack. Very disappointing, because it looked delicious otherwise!

When the weather is nice, you really get a holiday feeling here. Due to the size and the large number of people, often including children, it can sometimes be a bit noisy. But otherwise, a nice place with friendly staff. Large free parking lot.

The disadvantage is that you cannot pay per person.

I come here often, for food or drinks. The place is lovely and the food is good, but the staff continues to amaze me. Always curt, not customer-friendly, and you have to try really hard yourself if you want another drink after your first order. I would really like to see enjoyment in the working team here, and I would wish that for all of them. (Because it really makes your job 10 times more fun than it already is).

Although the Palenberg is missed 😉, it is a great place to be. Dogs are welcome. There is a nice little loop of about 15 minutes for walking, after which you can have a good bite to eat or drink at Kaap Hoorn. A lovely spot for a chat.

But that the entire area there is off-limits to dogs for months starting in April is incomprehensible to me! And a disregard for the many recreational dog users. Something needs to be done about that!

I was looking forward to a spot on one of the wooden benches, right by the lake. But now there is a wooden fence around the terrace, which spoils the magnificent view over the water. What a terrible shame!

I had lunch here today with a friend. When ordering, I explicitly stated that I am pregnant and currently can tolerate almost nothing. That is why I asked if it was possible to order the bruschetta, even though it is officially only available from 17:00 (it was 13:30). The answer I received: “no, we do not make exceptions.” I understand that there are rules to maintain structure, but in a situation like this, I find it unacceptable that absolutely no flexibility or understanding is shown. A simple request, with a clear reason, is rejected without any attempt to be helpful. To me, that says a lot about the service and customer focus. Great location by the water! The food is delicious and tasty and comes pretty quick when ordering! They also have a wide range of snacks and drinks to go along with them! The spare ribs and chicken burger is tasty! The beef burger has a bit of an odd taste but overall good none the less! We have gone here multiple times and will do so again :) I recommend making a reservation as sometimes it gets busy during the evening!

We went to lunch with a group this afternoon. Behind us was a long table where people had also eaten. A staff member was sweeping the floor with a broom, then pushing the chairs aside and "sweeping" the table with the same broom. I watched in amazement as this fine fellow first swept food off the floor, then back onto the table with the broom, then the floor again, and finally the table again. After that, the candles were lit and the next group of people were brought to their table. Not very hygienic, if you ask me.

No longer dog-friendly – ​​a big disappointment I used to love coming here with my dog. Always friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, that's completely changed now. Dogs are only welcome at one long table right by the entrance – the least inviting spot in the entire restaurant – or you have to sit outside. When I asked if the heater could be turned on outside because it was cold, I was refused. Such a shame. A little bit of customer service would have made all the difference. Honest advice to Kaaphoorn: just put up a sign saying "No dogs allowed." Then dog owners will immediately know what to expect and will look for a place where their four-legged friends are welcome. It's a shame that a once so pleasant and welcoming restaurant has changed so much.

Friendly, helpful, and kind staff. The food was varied; much of it was tasty, but the spare ribs were inedible. Very dry and truly unappetizing, as were the few burnt Brussels sprouts that were practically the only vegetables. Such a shame. We mentioned this to the staff, which they seemed to appreciate. The cocktails were good, though. We had a pleasant evening, even though the food could have been better.

You can sit inside or outside and have a great drinks platter

A busy restaurant, geared towards groups. Delicious lunch, lots to taste, too much to eat, and you could take the rest home in a container if you wanted. A bit short on brown bread, more white varieties. A successful dinner. A pity: a long table for 25 people; they didn't have a square or round one. So you don't see the whole group.

A lovely spot for a bite to eat and a drink, but a barbecue for a large group wasn't a success. The next group arrived in less than an hour, and we were kindly asked to move. We were eventually allowed to stay, but the service wasn't very attentive. The food itself was fine. The service was also friendly.

My husband had a terrible experience ordering soup and fries. They were served simultaneously, so either one or the other gets cold. At Kaap, the appetizer and main course are served simultaneously. I regularly eat at restaurants and have never experienced this before. The person who brought it was very rude. Could they order it one after the other? No, that wasn't possible, as mentioned above. She had nothing to do with it and simply walked away during our conversation. During lunch, she regularly walked past us, continuing to glare at us. What rude behavior you cultivate in your staff. Fantastically situated at the tip of the Kaapse Baan on Hoornsemeer lake. A large, free parking lot is available. What's particularly striking is the sheer size of the terrace directly on Hoornsemeer lake, with literally hundreds of tables, varying heights, furnishings, etc. Very popular! Live music is regularly featured in the summer. The welcome is pleasant. The decor and atmosphere are excellent and cozy. Everything is clean and tidy. Friendly and efficient service. Excellent and clean restrooms. I chose the Rustic Brown Roll Carpaccio for lunch. Delicious and exactly as it should be! All in all, a great place, whether as a resting point or starting point for anything, excellent for relaxing, and perfectly suited for celebrating anything together. Upon entering, we were told we could choose a spot outside. Not a minute later, the waitress told us we weren't allowed to sit there (I've sat there before). She pointed to the "dog area" where we were allowed to sit. The cushions were wet, so I didn't sit there. We then sat on the terrace, and she hadn't offered a menu. Fifteen minutes later, I walked over and they laughed in my face. So I just left. I was "helped" by Sanna and her colleague. I always found this a pleasant place, but after this experience, I'm very disappointed...too bad!
