News Cafe in Centrum

My experience at News Café was really bad. I went to order a drink and also asked for an ashtray. The employee said she would bring it right away. I then waited for about half an hour, but she didn't come back at all. When I asked again, she just said “yes” in an unfriendly tone. People next to me asked for the menu. She walked to the spot where the menus and ashtrays were kept, grabbed the menu, and brought it to them, but she didn't bring my ashtray. Afterward, she went back to the same spot where the ashtrays were, stood there for a few minutes, and then walked away again without bringing my ashtray. I understand that it can be busy, but at that moment, it wasn't busy at all. Eventually, I asked another employee, and she brought it immediately. If I hadn't asked someone else, I wonder how much longer I would have had to wait. Really bad service. I won't be coming back here anytime soon.

I ate at Newscafé with my girlfriend, but to be honest, we wondered several times where the quality and service of the past have gone. Apparently, they have retired along with the double layer of nachos. I ordered the chicken satay for €16. For that price, you expect at least well-cooked chicken and normal satay sauce. Unfortunately, the chicken was not cooked properly and the satay sauce tasted incredibly sour. In any case, it didn't come across as fresh. On top of that, I received a ridiculously small amount of fries. For €16, the price-quality ratio is pretty hard to find. But above all, the famous nachos were a disappointment. Newscafé used to be known for exactly that: large portions, generously topped, and a double layer of chicken or ground meat, so you wouldn't be left with a plate of plain chips halfway through. Now the double layers have disappeared, and actually only the top few nachos are well-topped. After that, you end up in a kind of nacho desert: a heap of dry, plain chips where you mainly need your imagination to spot any chicken, cheese, or sauce. So you are paying more for considerably less. That might be a business model, but as a customer, it doesn't exactly make you happy. The service also left a lot to be desired. The drinks were brought quickly, and then we were asked if we wanted something to eat. Fine, you would think. Except no menu arrived, no one paid any attention to us, and we were completely walked past several times. We then waited for 30 minutes. At a certain point, you get the feeling that you are no longer waiting for service, but participating in a social experiment: how long can two people sit at a table before someone notices they want to be served? In the end, we just ordered via the QR code ourselves, because otherwise we probably would still be waiting. It is especially a shame because Newscafé clearly seems to be living on its old reputation. In the past, you came for generous portions, good quality, and a pleasant experience. Now you get smaller portions, higher prices, disappointing quality, and service where you can apparently quietly become invisible for half an hour. A price increase is fine if it is offset by better quality or service. But paying more for less food, lower quality, and inferior service is difficult to explain. It is a real shame, because we arrived with high expectations. Hopefully, something will be done with this feedback, because it would be a pity if Newscafé ultimately remains known primarily for how good it used to be.

Extremely disappointing experience. The service was terrible, and some of the staff were extremely rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional. I also felt that I was treated differently because of my background, which made the experience even more unacceptable. Customers deserve basic respect and equal treatment. I would not recommend this café, and I sincerely hope management takes this complaint seriously and addresses the behavior of the staff.

We came here for the charcuterie board and a drink. Staff polite and friendly. Fast service. Excellent charcuterie board (varied) and it was also very tasty. The board consisted of some pieces of cheese and sausage, dips, a small bowl of nachos, some hot snacks, pepadews, bread, dates, olives, and a little pulled pork. As far as I'm concerned, the obligatory peanuts could have stayed on the bar. I think a few walnuts or something similar would be more fitting for a tasty board. We found 37.50 for a board a bit overpriced (25 would have been more appropriate), but anyway, it was delicious.

The terrace is really lovely, but the food is really declining. In both quality and quantity. My daughter had the chicken nachos. Normally, two people can really enjoy that, and the dish is warm, with soft melted cheese and good tortilla chips. Now, the bowl was halved, the cheese was hard, and the nachos were cold... 2 mint teas and 1 bowl of... nachos €21.00. A shame; we will look elsewhere next time.

Had a delicious meal, beautiful restaurant

The Classic Club Sandwich was truly excellent and deserved 5 stars. Unfortunately, the good food was completely ruined by some of the most unfriendly service I've experienced in a long time. When we politely inquired about a table for nine, we received only an arrogant and condescending "I don't think so." The absurdity of it all: there was a free table for nine right behind the server. This kind of treatment simply doesn't make you feel welcome. When we asked if we could split the bill, we received a firm "No"—even though we only wanted three checks, not nine. This shouldn't be an unusual request for a group of this size. It's a shame, because the food was really good. Because of the unfriendly and disrespectful service, we definitely won't be returning.

Last Saturday, we came for a nice lunch with our little daughter. The food was, as always, very tasty. Unfortunately, it took a very long time this time to get our drinks. By the second round, we had to wait so long that we had already finished our food before the drinks were brought. Additionally, the tables were still dirty. I ended up cleaning our table myself with a baby wipe. It is remarkable that none of the wait staff seemed to notice this, even though they came to the table multiple times. It is a shame, because the tasty food makes up for a lot, but unfortunately, the service left something to be desired this time.

Great café restaurant, nice for people-watching while sitting on the terrace. First thing in the morning, breakfast with bread, omelette, and salmon was delicious. In the evening, I ate a delicious steak with mushrooms and fries. It was absolutely delicious. Plus, the service was very friendly. For food and drinks, Groningen was very good for me.

We had a delicious meal here today (July 1st) together with my husband. The staff was friendly and attentive! The food was tasty and it is a very beautiful, lovely place to eat. This restaurant is on our list to visit again when we are in Groningen 😄

On a cold and rainy Saturday, we made ourselves comfortable outside with our dog under the umbrellas with patio heaters. The café was quite busy. You can order using a QR code on the tables, but there's also a server. The server was incredibly friendly and gave us detailed advice in almost perfect German about the dishes we wanted, explaining them and offering us possible alternatives. Our dog was brought a bowl of water without us even having to ask. Fantastic! The food (fries with Parmesan, spring onions, and dip) and the hot drinks were delicious and, most importantly, plentiful. We felt completely at ease and will gladly return on our next visit to Groningen.

Today, we wanted to have lunch with our family at News Café on a day of nearly 30 degrees. We had already ordered drinks and planned to have a substantial lunch, but our 4-year-old son wasn't even allowed to sit at our table with a small ice cream we had bought elsewhere. Instead of a little humanity or understanding for a young child in the heat, we were immediately told that it was absolutely not allowed. No flexibility whatsoever, no child-friendliness, and above all, a completely unwelcoming attitude. We understand that a business has rules, but how you handle them says everything about your service. Treating a family with a small child like this, while they are simply customers spending money, feels truly absurd. For us, it was a huge letdown. If you want to be welcomed with children in Groningen, you'd better skip this place. Very child-unfriendly and absolutely no warm hospitality experience.

Super friendly staff. The food was excellent. We felt very comfortable there. The other guests were mostly younger, as is probably the case everywhere in Groningen. If we ever come back to Groningen, we will definitely go there again. I forgot my sunglasses there. Since we were in Groningen by boat, I unfortunately couldn't go back. They even sent them to me in Germany.

We have been coming here for years; it is always busy and lively, the food is good, and the service is good too. My girlfriend and I are always happy when we have been here again; they are real winners.

Was here for a gala, the music was too loud, the barmaid grabbed ice with her hands and poured it into the cup with her fingers. Grimy, filthy place.

We love you nieuwscafe🫶 My girlfriend and I went there for our three-year anniversary, since we also dined there on our first date! The food was very good again, although we did order a bit too much.😅 For other visitors - the meat platter is more than enough for two people. A light appetizer like the delicious mustard soup would have sufficed, but another side dish was too much for us. Still, we bravely fought through it all, even finishing everything! It took us three hours, but the atmosphere was definitely good. I called ahead to plan a surprise for my girlfriend, and they were so helpful. I'm still incredibly grateful for that! Newscafe in Groningen city center between Grote Markt and Herestraat. Very good food, extensive menu, and fast service. A regular place to go in Groningen for lunch, brunch, and dinner. We hope Newscafe stays as it is for years to come. Fantastic!

We've eaten here several times when we're in Groningen. Delicious food. A diverse menu with different kinds of sandwiches, sandwiches, burgers, etc. Helpful staff and a nice atmosphere. Only if you sit upstairs, it can be a bit noisy sometimes due to the kitchen noise.

The wine was undrinkable... Sweet red, yuck!

The fries were cold, the croquettes were stale, and the mustard sauce was probably way past its sell-by date. It's very noisy and cold. The toilets are old and dirty. NEVER AGAIN... the tea was good, though.

The cocktails here are undrinkable. I regret the money! It's great that you're introducing 50 new cocktails, but no refund whatsoever if you complain and try a new concept. Such a shame!

We were here for dinner, the food was OK. Unfortunately, I only noticed too late that the additional side dishes were charged separately at full price, but the original side dishes were not included.

I come here every time I'm in Groningen! The food is always delicious, and you never have to wait long. The atmosphere and staff are great. Tip: the nachos are absolutely amazing!

Had a delicious salmon loaf. Clean restrooms, and the place is cozy and clean.

Their terrace is so inviting especially with the heaters. The cheese cake and red velvet cake were awesome, and happy they were serving matcha latte with oat milk.

A great place I've been going to for years. Friendly and helpful staff.

It is a nice place to sit. However, we were apparently out of sight of the staff, because it took a very long time for them to come by every time. It was also impossible to make eye contact with the passing staff. Very annoying. Otherwise, the food was excellent.

Wonderfully central, right on the Grote Markt in the heart of Groningen's city center. Quality combined with a prime location comes at a price, but I think you get value for your money!

Had a quick lunch here with my daughter this afternoon. A delicious Classic Club Sandwich and a Salmon Sandwich (lots of salmon). The club sandwich was just as it should be. Nicely filled, flavorful, and more than enough. It was a lovely moment of relaxation and enough for the rest of the afternoon.

Best place in whole Groningen. Tasty food, good drinks. And best waiters. Absolutely recommend!

Had a delicious lunch this afternoon. It was cozy but not too busy; there was plenty of room for the two of us. Had a beetroot salad and a Bagel Italy. Delicious.

They are really very friendly and respectful. I really love driving there. I go to their place to eat and drink very often.

The food was delicious. The atmosphere was very inviting and cozy. Only a few drawbacks: Clearing the dishes took a while, even though the waiter came by several times.

I find the inside less cozy than the terrace. On the terrace, all the shoppers walk past from Herestraat and Grote Markt to Vismarkt. There is always something to see. When it gets a bit colder, they turn on the patio heaters, and you can sit outside for quite a long time. The staff is always friendly.

Outside on the terrace it's always busy, but inside it's quite quiet, though still quite noisy. The food is good, but nothing special.

My go to coffee/lunch place in Groningen. Right on the Grote Markt with a lot of cosy chatter around. The food has never disappointed me so far and I live there chocolate cappuccino in winter!

Heel gast vrij wel een leuke spot om te eten maar we kwamen aan rond etenstijd 18:15. We hadden twee medium wel done straks bestelt , maar het vlees was zeer oud of bedorven schrijf deze beoordeling om 23:03 en ben nog steeds misselijk heb echt spijt dat ik dit vlees heb gegeten voel me gewoon ziek heb foto’s van het vlees vind het gewoon jammer want mijn gezondheid voelt in gevaar gebracht.

Today, March 9, we went in to at least have a cup of tea, there were 8 of us and it was quite empty inside. We settled down at a cozy large round table with lovely chairs (walked in, and then to the right and then towards that table). We wanted to order tea and the waitress already arrived. We easily fit around that table but the waitress told us we weren't allowed to sit there with 8 people; that didn't fit, she couldn't walk around it. We had to sit at the back of the shop, where we were given 3 small tables pushed together with a set of hard wooden chairs; well I can tell you the waitress couldn't ignore that at all. We did not feel welcome and left for another location. Atmosphere a 0 and Service a 0. When we walked away we saw 2 people sitting at that large table with a large bag: they were welcome. Too bad about this. Not recommended if you are looking for fun. The wait staff wasn't interested in us leaving either, they were too busy chatting with the three of us.

We had a very good experience. The nicest server named Wout, 22 years old. Super nice guy who made the experience even better. Operation is perfect!! Everyone eat here!!

We were in the city of Groningen yesterday around 10:30 am and at News Café for the first time. We ate something; drank coffee tea. There was nothing immediately noticeable. But not in the end where we were sitting, there were still bread crumbs and the like on the couch(es; table(s). And yes, the worst thing was going to the toilet... the chlorine smell came to you in abundance (stairs). It's nice that it is cleaned, but the fact that you are almost overcome by the chlorine smell doesn't seem good to me. And then the toilet itself; there was chlorine in the bowl. And the floors were soaking wet; in the end I didn't go to the toilet. I was really overcome by the chlorine smell. I don't have to not to continue… So look at that.

Due to the stress that my granddaughter with diabetes had lost her phone, completely forgot to pay while looking for her phone, later contacted them by phone to pay, all understanding and payment waived, what a service and the food was great!!!!

We wanted to have dinner there on a weekday, we were kindly received by a gentleman to select a spot. We had waited a while for the service to come, it was also very difficult to make contact with them because they were chatting behind the bar. At one point the service came towards us but then turned away again. We then left, too bad!!

My goodness, the thai curry soup with the News lunch was absolutely a winner! The taste of it was gorgeous! Wanted to have a cup of coffee at the news cafe on Saturday afternoon. We were kindly received at the door and given a spot. Then completely disappeared from view. After 15 minutes we left. Unfortunately no contact was possible.

Last week in town, just got a snack. Let's take a look at the nose café. What a nice tent this is! Nice people, nice atmosphere, good dishes and a hospitable feeling! After a short consultation I was given a spot inside. That was a plus, because it was cold outside.... as mentioned, nice and warm, hospitable, and we opted for a carpatio bouncer and that was fine, see photo! Nice tasty and friendly. All in all, great.

Wanted to get lunch here this week with my family (6 people). When we entered, the staff was friendly, but when we asked about putting together 2 tables outside so we could sit together, they became rude and told us “we are organized here” and suggested we sit at 2 separate tables, as it was not possible to change the seating for us. While I can understand the organization, I can’t understand the rude attitude or the unwillingness of the staff to allow us to sit together. I’ve never encountered this before honestly. However, the food looked very good and the atmosphere (from what we noticed) was very nice. Location is very good.

Old-fashioned fun. Cup of coffee, no rush. Different newspapers to read. It's wonderful to do nothing for a while.

Amazing view with great seats and good service. Atmosphere was great but points lost due to inconsistent coverage under rain. Quite easy to get wet if sitting outside. However, food was good, coffee was beyond good. Got the smoked salmon with bread, club sandwich with seafood. Both very well done, club sandwich was too filling tbh, very generous with the portions.

Very tasty food during a Sunday lunch. Ordered quesadilla with chicken. Was very tasty and very filling. Had 6 pieces of quesadilla very much enjoyed it. Good price for the quality and quantity you get. The view was very nice, we were on the first floor and could look outside. The venue was neat and looked well taken care of.

There is always room for improvement. For the rest, a great restaurant to enjoy the city of Groningen. Nicely centrally located and something for everyone. Definitely recommended.

Had a drink here yesterday, I had a ginger/mint tea. To my great surprise, there was a caterpillar in here. Now I understand that such things happen and this has been resolved properly! But from now on, maybe check it carefully before serving “fresh” mint.

Ik kwam voor een heerlijk kopje koffie en een lunch maar kreeg een grote mond van de medewerker, dus niet gegeten of gedronken. Hij word echt zo brutaal dit heb ik nog nooit meegemaakt in een lunchroom of restaurant! Ik ben er vaker geweest en was tevreden maar nu ga ik nooit meer!

The frappe is just milk with some ice cubes, and thats where you pay 4,30 for... Very dissapointing
