Beautiful atmosphere, steeped in jazz history... the staff were friendly, smiling, and helpful. We tried the appetizer and main courses, and everything was delicious... a lovely little restaurant in Amsterdam.

Went here for a jazz performance (Professor and Friends). The performance itself was amazing, and so was the food we ordered. The staff was also very friendly. The only downside is that it was slightly crowded.

We were in a very quiet and cozy place 🤩 We didn't eat anything, just drank beer 🍻🍺, but there were more than six different beers on tap. The atmosphere was very romantic and peaceful.

A super friendly bistro with a striking decor. A decent selection of draft beers; the wine list is limited, but the open beers are good. The fondue in bread with refills is recommended. The fish soup was particularly good. The industrial spring rolls, which had a fishy undertone, are not recommended. The Amsterdam Charcu platter was good value for money—but the Gouda was young.

For years this was one of my go-tos for the limburg stew. Great for visitors:) Nevertheless they stopped serving the stew refill, but kept the serving size for €30. We ended up hungry, its not worth it anymore now that the meal is half the size, for the current price. It feels scammy

Not far from Central Station and Dam Square, this place has a great atmosphere! Definitely check it out. It's crowded, but the service is fast. The food was excellent! The herring and potato salad were great! The beer is also good. Recommended

I was always coming to this place to have a drink, one of my favorite places because of their hidden spot and beautiful green terrace. They have a nice selection of beers on tap you can sometimes find some specials, also in bottles. I really recommend the beer Zeppills, it's a hybrid (blond/IPA), thanks to the recommendation from Tijm, a really kind staff, loved the service👌

Sitting outside to eat in the lovely courtyard means you are surrounded by non-stop smoking people. It means you can't really taste your food.

I always love coming to Kapitein Zeppos, perfect if you want to go for a stroll around the city center. Charming decoration and place. And the food is amazing. We went to dinner and we recommend the antipasto plate (fish) for 2, which we ate between 5 at the staff's recommendation. They also have lovely fish and meat dishes. You can tell there is passion for food there.

Last night in Amsterdam, we stumbled upon this beautiful space, in the middle of everything yet seemingly isolated from it all. It has an authentic and warm atmosphere, excellent service, and incredible food. The lasagna and risotto are superb! The average price is a bit high for my budget, but like everything else these days.

We discover this place by chance and I have to say, what a fantastic place. Very unique place, with lovely staff. The food was very tasty... we had the burgers, risotto, Vegan lasagne and it was soooo good. Highly recommended 😋😋

The restaurant is very, very central. The place is beautiful, with a vintage feel and very cozy. The service is correct, professional, and, although not exceptionally friendly... we mustn't forget that we're very far north, and therefore, there's nothing to complain about in that regard. The menu is very, very limited, with very few dishes to choose from. Even so, what we ordered was fine. Especially in this cold weather, be sure to order the soup of the day. Today it was mushroom and it was delicious. In short, a very central and beautiful place, worth a visit, although the food, while by no means bad, isn't exceptionally good.

We waited for half an hour, and they ignored us. And after ordering and waiting a total of 45 minutes, they told us they didn't have anything, and they kept bringing out food, but there was nothing for us.

The atmosphere and aesthetics are really great. The place is full of charm and very nice, inside and out! But we were disappointed by the food and the service. Among the dishes ordered, we had hamburgers and the meat was a kind of reconstituted meat like in a snack bar, not a minced steak worthy of the name ;) The other dishes were good! The service was frankly not up to par. We wanted desserts and ended up giving up because it was very long and we were forgotten.

Some friends and I went to this place for lunch. I ordered a shakshuka. It's actually a bit of a deal, so Spanish people can understand what it is, but it wasn't bad at all. I also ordered croquettes to share, which were very, very good, but it's true that they only give you two croquettes and the whole thing costs €16, which I think is quite excessive. But it's a quiet place with a good atmosphere.

I was recommended to go there, it’s off the main streets and had a nice feeling. Asked for a drink (amaretto sour) and got the answer from the server they only serve drinks from the menu. Highly recommended! Great eatery in a side street off the main road. A small, narrow terrace between the houses makes it cozy but also reasonably cool on a hot day. The location and atmosphere are excellent. Friendly, young staff and a cozy atmosphere. The menu is very limited in terms of choice, and the price-quality ratio is simply poor. The quality of the ingredients used is poor. The tomato soup was inedible, overly sweet, far too much sugar, completely flavorless, and tasted like a ready-made package from the supermarket. The snails were small, shriveled, very oily, and greasy. I've never had such a bad hamburger. I wanted a medium/rare burger, but it was a compact, pre-cooked burger, probably already pre-made from the package. The vegetables under the burger were indefinable and also wet, the cheddar was runny, and the tiny piece of bacon was barely lukewarm and definitely not crispy. The risotto wasn't very exciting, a risotto that was a bit too Dutch. Very disappointing and a reason to never eat here again. Having a drink outside is recommended, it's a really nice place.

We went here twice because the atmosphere was so cozy and relaxed. The food was good - would recommend the Dutch herring, fish soup, and the potato gratin that came with the sirloin was great. Sirloin itself could have used more salt but was decent. Service was as kind of slow but not outside the norm for Europe. I would have gotten more to drink if the servers came around more. Sat there for about an hour after finishing food and drink and had to go to the bar to ask where to pay.

This is a fantastic cafe for lunch. The food was excellent, the server was a treat to chat with and the atmosphere was cozy and comfortable.

A disastrous experience for a dinner. The restaurant is out of the way, with a few locals present, and it doesn't at all resemble a "tourist spot," BUT move on. The service is deplorable, no smiles, no welcome... Above all, don't order the hamburger, which is made with nonexistent bacon and an inedible reconstituted steak.

Nice ambiance hidden gem in beautiful Amsterdam

It seems like a very traditional place, even for locals. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you can eat comfortably. Maybe it was the culture shock that made the food not our favorite, but it has nothing to do with quality or presentation. I would recommend it for a relaxed, local atmosphere, and I think it has more commercial dishes if you're not into local cuisine.

We had dinner here twice, the steaks were cooked just right, the herring was excellent, the cheese a la fondue was also very tasty.

Cool restaurant! We came here because we were craving Shakshuka, but unfortunately they were all out for the day! Instead we tried the Bitterbalen which were a great snack to pair with a nice cold beer. After our snack we went upstairs to watch some live jazz being played as a part of the red light jazz festival.

Last Saturday we went to the Kapitein with 5 people to celebrate my mother-in-law's 79th birthday. We arrived a bit earlier than planned but that was no problem; we were warmly welcomed with a glass of cava for everyone at the table. Because we had something to celebrate! The man who took care of us was an exceptionally funny, friendly and correct man. Thanks to him and the rest of the cheerful staff and a super kitchen brigade we had a great evening. I have now been to Kapitein Zeppos about 6 or 7 times; it was always super cozy, good food, nice service and therefore beautiful evenings! Thank you very much and see you again next time!

A deplorable experience on every level. The quality of the food borders on the indefensible: the burger steak, obviously recreated, completely lacks flavor and texture, and leaves a sickeningly industrial impression. The entire meal gives the impression of low-end cafeteria service, with no attention to freshness or presentation. Service-wise, it's a complete disaster: no decent welcome, no attention paid to drinks, and the staff are virtually invisible throughout the meal. We literally had to ask several times for a simple glass of water. I strongly advise against this restaurant, both for the poor quality of its food and its complete lack of professionalism. Avoid this place if you expect even the slightest consideration for your food—and for yourself.

The catch of the day was absolutely delicious — perfectly cooked and bursting with fresh flavor. The presentation was elegant, and the portion size was just right. The service was exceptional; the staff were warm, friendly, and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed. From start to finish, it was a truly enjoyable dining experience. Nice place, the rest needs to be reviewed. Brisk staff with zero empathy. 6.50 euros for a 75cl bottle of water...two miserable wholemeal sandwiches with pieces of meat and a slice of cucumber 19 euros, tourism is fine but this seems really excessive to me! Failed.

One bad apple can really change the feeling of a place completely. As always, the four of us dropped by spontaneously. The restaurant was half empty, so I happily said: “It’s so empty here, beautiful!” My friend said that it was her birthday and that there might be a few more people joining us, a maximum of eight in total, just to have a drink. The employee said that she had to consult. A little later she came back with the message that they could not accept a large group due to a shortage of staff. We found that strange, because it was quiet and we only wanted to have drinks. I even suggested that we sit in pairs so that it would be less stressful. I have also worked in the catering industry, so I tried to think along and show understanding. Unfortunately, everything was rejected immediately. The tone of the employee was curt and not exactly hospitable. I asked: “If ten people come in now, will you send them away too?” But there was no room for that. What makes it extra sad: we have been coming here since 2018, for about five or six years, always with pleasure. It was really a regular place for us. But after this experience I honestly don't know if that will remain the case. In the end we went to Contra on the other side. There we were welcomed friendly, even though it was a lot busier there. That difference in hospitality was painfully clear.

I was contemplating if I should write this review or not. But here we go. I have loved Kapitein Zeppos since the first day I went. I tell all my friends about it, and go there every chance I get. I love the place, food, drinks, and have always been treated nicely by staff. But yesterday around 7pm, we walked in into a very empty Zeppos. I kindly said that I wanted to have drinks with my friends to celebrate my birthday and I wasn’t sure how many we would be, since in that moment we were only 4 and maybe 4 more would join. Important to point out that this has never been a problem but I do understand that because of reservations it can be tricky. Maybe I should have called beforehand or something. The problem is that this same girl that welcomed us did not even flinch when she turned us away. She wasn’t kind, didn’t explain properly and honestly was not even interested in finding a solution but simply told us it would be “too much to handle”. When my boyfriend tried to offer a solution to maybe separate the group, she, in a very not kind way said no and had no interest in helping or being understanding. I have worked in horeca for a very long time in Amsterdam so I do understand the stress these situations can create. But she was rude, not interested and her attitude and the way she spoke to us was really disappointing since we have always been fans of Zeppos, and never once felt treated badly like this by any other staff members. It’s very sad that I had to walk away with a bad experience from a place that I love so much and visit often. Gladly the night turned better, when a restaurant/bar nearby gladly made a spot for us and prepared a table for us even though they told us they weren’t expecting a big group and they were busy. But they treated us kindly and the service was great, so shout out to Contra for accommodating us.

Have loved this place for so long. Sadly, yesterday we got turned away for no proper reason. We were a group of 4 (with the possibility of others joining later) looking to sit down for drinks. With a fully empty front inside of the restaurant, a very unprofessional lady turned us away and said and I quote “too much to handle”. We come here often for drinks with the same group of people (sometimes even almost 8 people) in times where the restaurant has been completely full. As someone with experience of years in managing horeca, this lady turning us away for the simple reason of it being “too much” with a half empty restaurant was definitely a low, disrespectful and unprofessional reasoning. Very disappointed.

For the record, I had already been there during my first time in Amsterdam in 2016 and I had great memories of it. 10 years later we also had a great time! The service was great and the dishes delicious for a reasonable price for Amsterdam! I recommend it.

The food was good, probably above average in Amsterdam, so was the beer, but nothing special. Overall, I had a great time visiting this place. It feels Dutch authentic. A hidden gem of local delicacies. Tucked away down an alley to ensure its secrets are rarely discovered by tourists but I would almost urge anyone to try their food. My partner and myself shared some bread and hummus then the catch of the day and the cheese fondue. Safe to say we were both in absolute food paradise. Made room for dessert after a star performance on the 1st 2 courses. Atmosphere and food make this a 10/10

Cheap and well-located place to try some typical Dutch food.

We didn't try the food here because the vegetarians among us didn't see enough meatless dishes on the lunch menu. We did have drinks and delicious Holtkamp cake at Zeppos. There is live music on Sunday afternoon and that was great! The service works hard. The only big downside I found was that we were really sitting in the cold, there was a huge draft at the door to the toilets so we kept our winter coats on and didn't stay too long. This was early November when it wasn't even that cold outside so how will it be in the winter? If they put a few more vegetarian dishes on the menu and did something about the cold I would give Zeppos 5 stars for the atmosphere.
