Nice Indonesian restaurant. The food was tasty. Prices seemed a bit high to me. The chef was very confident in his dishes. I had a multi-day menu, like most of the guests. I mean, there are plenty of Indonesian restaurants of this kind in Amsterdam.

We arrived without a reservation (because they didn't answer the phone) on a Friday evening. The waitress was very welcoming and friendly! We tried the rijstafel with meat (followed by two scoops of ice cream and a tea at the end of the meal!): delicious and excellent value for money! We were delighted with this evening and would not hesitate to recommend this very good restaurant!

The staff were so helpful we just had mains but they gave us some free crackers to start and even gave us tea after our meal. We saw others getting the set menu which I would Definitley try next time. The food we had was a little bit of everything, very tasty. Quite quiet in here but it was getting busy as we were leaving.

Best meal I had in Amsterdam!! I've been to several Indonesian restaurants in Los Angeles and New York, but Kartika in Amsterdam was by far the best! So much flavor and spice (spicy if you want) everything I tried was next level! We went with the rice table so we were able to try everything! Also, the owner/staff was absolutely phenomenal! The service was spot on and everything was great! If you go to Amsterdam and want to have a good meal, stay away from Dutch food!!! Check out Kartika!! Also, make a ressie, sometimes its very busy!! Also, Cash Only!!

Came here twice, amazing service and attention to detail 👌

I’m gluten free and said so on the reservation, as well as when we ordered our food. We ordered the set menu and they said they’d switch a few things so it could be gluten free. After half the food was out for 20 minutes the waitress came up and said “oh have you been eating that? It’s not gluten free” even though we had told them twice we needed all gluten free. She then proceeded to tell me I’d be fine and it was ok. I haven’t eaten gluten in years. I have health issues and can’t eat gluten or I’ll feel awful. For her to say I’d be ok is ridiculous and unprofessional when we confirmed twice it would be gluten free. Also, there was a rat sitting under our table near our feet for 10 minutes and people kept staring and pointing but no one told us what was going on. At one point the waitress came up and kicked something away and when we said what happened she said “oh animal” then walked away. Once again people started looking at us… We finally asked someone and they told us a rat was under the table. The waitress hadn’t told us and also minimized exposing me to gluten, telling me I’d be fine. Thankfully I’m not celiac, but I do have an intolerance and it will cause me to be uncomfortable and not feel good. I typically don’t write reviews but thought it was important to warn anyone who needs to be gluten free.

This is one of those places that I'm not sure I should post, because I would like them to remain a hidden gem. There's a lot of good Indonesian food in the Netherlands, but this is probably one of the best I've had. The rijsttafel is delicious and I liked that they presented it in pairs and explained what dishes go well together. The staff is very friendly as well. When we were there on a Monday, all tables were booked, so it's a good idea to call them to make a reservation.

We heard that Indonesian food was delicious in the Netherlands, so we chose this place based on positive reviews. It did not disappoint!! Due to peanut allergies, we ordered items a la carte. We chose both tofu dishes, one chicken, and one beef dish. The service was wonderful, and the food delicious! One tip is to make reservations. On a Thursday, the restaurant was packed with a line! We got lucky walking in because we got there early (6 pm).

I wanted to try authentic Indonesian food when in Amsterdam and chose this place based on the reviews. To be fair, the food was not bad. But I am giving it 4 stars because the options are limited if you're eating alone. I understand that food is meant to be shared but sometimes that isn't possible. Service was okay - the place was busy and there were just 2 people making it difficult for them to serve all tables. And the meals weren't cheap by any standards. In summary, good experience, but could have been better.

I was waiting in line last night. When a table for 2 people became available, I sat down with my friend. Immediately after this, one of the servers came to me and ordered me in an aggressive manner to get back in line and not to do this again. I was shocked, I thought what are we getting now! My previous experience in this restaurant was good. I thought, I will not accept this, so I turned around and left. Also, all the tables were reserved. I also found this strange because when you call and want to make a reservation, they say that this is not possible. So for me, it is not worth repeating.

This is like indonesian tapas. Small plates. Fantastic!

Delicious food with excellent service. The rice table was amazing and we enjoyed every dish. The waiter explained each dish perfectly and was attentive. Definitely will go back if we are in Amsterdam again!

This meal was exceptional! We were told to try Indonesian food when visiting the Netherlands and we were not disappointed. We walked in and got a table right away but it seems like reservations are typically recommended as it did fill up later. My partner and I shared the Nasi Goreng Rames Special and the fusion of flavours was so incredible. Other dishes looked phenomenal as well. The service at this restaurant was excellent! This meal made our last night in Amsterdam so memorable!!

Food was incredible. Me and my sister were not feeling well and the staff was so kind they offered to pack the rest and offered ice cream to make it go easier. Apart from that the toilets were clean and the experience was really nice despite not feeling well at that time :)

Mi esposa y visitó este restaurante para tener comida indonesia. Reservamos una mesa para 8 : 30 pm. Llegamos unos 10 minutos antes para encontrar una cola. Entré para alertarles de que habíamos llegado y teníamos una mesa reservada, sólo para que uno de los empleados ladrara que aún no eran las 08 : 30 y nos dijo que nos paráramos afuera. Fue la manera en la que habló, tal vez podría haber sido yo un poco sensible. Mi esposa me convenció de perseverar y nos llamaron a las 08:00: 30 pm. Pedimos el menú de Shinta. Trajeron la cerveza y galletas casi de inmediato, pero nuestra comida tardó una hora en llegar. Hemos probado comida indonesia antes y aunque era suntuosa, no era particularmente sabrosa o distintiva. Ponen todo en el plato caliente incluyendo ensaladas. En general, la comida, el ambiente y el servicio fue decepcionante. No es particularmente caro, pero los buenos modales y el servicio atento no cuesta nada.

Gran comida. Pero no contestan el teléfono para hacer una reserva. Llegamos poco después de que abriesen y nos dijeron que tendríamos que estar fuera a las 7 pm y era solo en efectivo. La comida era excelente y el servicio también. Pero, no puedo darles 5 estrellas basado en los otros factores.

Delicious rice table. Beautiful dishes and friendly service. We had not made a reservation and were told that a table was available for an hour and a half. With the fast service this was enough time.

The food here is exceptional! First time I’ve ever had Indonesian food and it was amazing. My party and I split the rice shareable meal, and we enjoyed every dish. The meats were very tender and flavorful. The service was also very attentive and kind. I also love reading the owners responses to the 1 star reviews, they’re well deserved because this place was nothing but great!

We stumbled upon this lovely restaurant quite by chance. The food was delicious; we even got a lightly mixed rice dish so my husband didn't have to go without meat entirely. For dessert, there was wonderful lemon ice cream, followed by tea. The all-around fantastic and extremely attentive service made the evening perfect.

5 star meal! Attentive server. This was our favorite food during our 3 days in Amsterdam. I wish they'd answer the phone to make reservations, and took credit cards. We lucked out and had enough cash. We enjoyed our noodle dish with 3 meats. Go early, before 6pm.

The waiter was amazingly friendly and he explained all of the dishes really well. The food was great and the set combos were laid out beautifully in order for us on heated plates. My group of 5 came late and he let us stay 40 minutes extra no fuss. Amazing experience.

Excellent Indonesian (rijsttafel) dinner! We had to wait about 25min for a table (because we hadn’t made a reservation). But the staff were very efficient and kept us updated (“people will be paying soon, we’ll have a table for you in 10-15min”). Once seated they gave us menus and got our orders very quickly and the food was delivered promptly thereafter. It was so flavourful, and plenty (we were three and stuffed afterwards!) Waiter was so kind and friendly and gave us an explanation of what each little dish was. Even though they were busy and others were waiting for a table - we never felt rushed. Absolutely worth it. I will definitely go back!

Experienced my second Rijsttafel in Amsterdam . Great experience , very different from the Indonesian street food in Melbourne and Sydney . It was an elegant and tasty dining experience . Very expensive for the amount for food we got , but the flavours of all the curries were unique and delicious.

Ordered the Ramayana and unfortunately found the food underwhelming. The meats were dry and didn’t taste freshly prepared. The overall quality reminded us of a fast-food setup: pre-cooked items kept warm and assembled to order, rather than something made fresh. Service was curt, which seems consistent with other reviews. I read that the owner is known for replying harshly to anything below five stars. I’m actually looking forward to the signature comeback—it would complete the experience. J or S is definitely better in terms of food and service.

Amazing Indonesian food! Our server explained the menu in great detail and gave personalized recommendations. The fried banana dessert was truly delicious. They were also very accommodating for vegetarians/those with food allergies. Cash only establishment but well worth it!

Amazing authentic food - even though we were walk-ins, we didn't have to wait too long and it was definitely worth the wait. It's always busy and there's a reason why! The service is impeccable, even though they were extremely busy, they were super attentive, speedy and responsive (and most of all kind, warm and polite - despite being run off their feet). If I'm ever back in Amsterdam I'd be here every other night. Complimentary lemon icecream at the end was a beautiful touch and yummy! Wish this place the best success.

I will call myself ham for this review, as I’m a popular foodie in my country in social media. I wanted to leave honest feedback. Got the Ramayana for two (£60 for two people). Pretty pricey for what it is — 10 small items served in tiny sauce dishes, each with just 3–4 pieces of meat or a single scoop of veggies. All the dishes seem to be cooked in bulk for the day and simply portioned out when ordered. As a slim American, I honestly don’t think it’s enough food for even one person. I could have gone to an Indian buffet with unlimited refills. Indonesian and Indian cuisines are different, of course, but you get the idea. The food quality isn’t outstanding enough to convince me not to whine for the little food portion. Also, it’s “cash only,” which back home often signals tax avoidance, and it’s definitely inconvenient not to be able to pay by card. You could add whatever service charge you want, I just hate that paying by card isn’t an option. Pro tip: The restaurant is tiny. You’ll be rubbing elbows with strangers. If you’re as social as I am, a simple prompt like, “I’m sorry — how’s your day?”, would start a very nice conversation. After a full sigh, I tell myself - tomorrow is another day of food adventure. Since the food has been fully digested, it’s time to move on to the next food adventure.

Food is good but the prices are extremely high for what it is. I feel like I got hustled coming in and out of this restaurant. Definitely get the full meal course and not one of the single dishes.

Kartika was the best food experience we had on our visit in Amsterdam! Besides the food being absolutely phenomenal, the service was unparalleled. We showed up 10 minutes before closing in a bit of a larger group and they were happy to accommodate us and let us wait for a table. They gave great descriptions of each traditional dish and they even helped adjust the general menu for the one vegetarian in the group, even ensuring the table was set with the vegetarian dishes on the side our vegetarian friend was sitting. How the menu works is that you can pay 35ish euros per person for a full spectrum of family style traditional dishes. The meal also starts with traditional indonesian crackers and three sauces. After you finish your meal you also get complementary home made ice cream. Absolutely amazing experience, and we even almost came back for another meal even though we were only in town 3 nights!

A very nice and authentic place.

I’m satisfied with the value of money I spent on food but absolutely unsatisfied with the service. I read some positive comments of customer service so I really wonder if my friends are I were discriminated. First, our complimentary appetizers were served later than people who were seated after us. When we asked for the appetizer, the waiter said, only nice customers will get it. Is this a joke? If so, not funny at all. Towards the end of the meal, we were approached 3 times by different waiters, “I assume you are done with your meal.” It really felt like they were trying to kick us out even though no one is waiting outside.

A good place to enjoy Indonesian “rice table” where you get served with an assortment of Indonesian dishes and sauces. (Tapas concept) Reservation is recommended.

Food was exceptional! Highly recommend the rice table for two. It was nice to get to try a little bit of everything. The dishes were unique, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. It was even rounded off with some delicious sorbet and warm tea service. Overall, I think it's definitely worth what you pay and I'm glad that we had this experience here while in Amsterdam. I have a friend who is traveling there this month and I suggested she visit here!

We've been in Amsterdam for 4 days and this is the best meal we've had the entire trip! The staff were so kind and friendly, the atmosphere was nice, and the food! The two of us had the Ramayana and it was a wonderful way to try a range of different foods. The homemade peanut sauce was especially good! It was a really generous amount of food and well thought out with flavour pairings and recommendations. We were offered more of any dishes we liked best free of charge! Although we were much too full to accept the kind offer. Included in the meal was some lovely cracker starters and for dessert was fried banana and lemon ice cream - not a combination I thought would work but I was very happy to be proven wrong! I would absolutely go again and will be telling any friends who visit to make sure they eat here!

Siempre habíamos querido hacer un Rijsttafel indonesio y un viaje a Amsterdam proporcionó la oportunidad perfecta. Investigamos varios restaurantes y estábamos encantados de encontrar Kartika cerca de nuestro hotel. Es un lugar muy concurrido y por eso es importante reservar. Había venido dos días antes y dijo que queríamos el Rijsttafel así que, cuando llegamos, nuestra mesa estaba todo listo y tuvimos un saludo muy cálido con el propietario recordando mi nombre de cuando reservé. Toda la experiencia fue increíble! La decoración es preciosa y la cercanía de las mesas se suma a la atmósfera bulliciosa. La comida era divina - cada plato se describió para nosotros como se colocó en las bandejas calentadas. Disfrutamos mucho de nuestra noche y no dudaría en recomendarlo! ¡Mi esposo le dice ‘terima kasih’ al dueño!

In Berlin ist es leider kaum möglich, indonesisch essen zu gehen - umso mehr freute ich mich auf Amsterdam. Wir landeten gleich am ersten Abend im "Kartika". Wollten eigentlich nur mal vorbeigehen und für einen anderen Abend reservieren, aber dann war gerade ein Tisch frei und wir blieben. Kulinarisch wurden wir nicht enttuscht! Es gibt zwei verschiedene Reistafeln, mit Fleisch und für Vegetarier, beides 30€ pro Nase. Erst ein kleiner Gruss aus der Küche , dann ging es los und 10 oder 12 Schälchen mit verschiedensten Gerichten standen auf dem Tisch, plus Reis natürlich. Ich habe nicht sooo viele Vergleiche, aber alles schmeckte frisch, toll gewürzt, vielfältig. Dazu indonesisches Bier (auch lecker). Kleine Einschränkung: es wird schon ganz ordentlich Druck gemacht, ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass jemand länger als zwei Stunden bleibt. Und wir waren nicht die einzigen Touristen, um es mal so zu sagen. Aber: ich hatte meine Reistafel, es war köstlich und ich ging mit einem Lächeln im Gesicht.

Amazing Indonesian cuisine! We have ordered meat version of the set for 2! On top they serve chips with some sweet and spicy sauces before the main course and with ice-cream at the end. Pls note they accept only cash, no cards

I would give 10 stars if this were possible. The staff is very friendly, quick and attentive; all the bowls on our rice table were explained in detail. When we were finished, they asked if we were full, otherwise they would bring us more bowls. Both water and cola glasses are served with ice cubes and lemon. The food was delicious, the portions were great and I would visit Amsterdam just for this great restaurant! I've never been to Indonesia, I can't judge how authentic this restaurant is, but I felt very welcome and everything was perfect! Highly recommended!

This restaurant was the highlight of my Amsterdam trip. Every meal we ate was so delicious and we were treated so well by the host! The staff all work so hard and you can tell that so much love goes into the food.

Wow, we were staying across the road from the restaurant and were being very lazy. Well it was the best meal we had in Amsterdam on a budget. It was superb. CASH only.

The food was absolutely delicious, and the female staff member provided exceptionally courteous service. So why the one-star review? Because of the shockingly rude attitude of a male staff member. It was truly disappointing. If you look at the responses to other negative reviews, you’ll get a clear sense of his character. I have no doubt that he has no intention of changing his behavior. But honestly, who do you think you are? I expect nothing less than another rude reply to this review. Such poor service does a disservice to the wonderful food.

Great food and fantastic friendly service.

It is described as dog-friendly on Tripadvisor, but there is a no-dogs sticker on the entrance door and we were turned away from the restaurant with a disgusted look (we were still outside, so not in the restaurant). I added the screenshot from TripAdvisor, just not that you would think that it was a given for us to bring the dog with us. We always check in advance where we are welcome with a dog.

There is not much to say apart from… An introduction in Indonesian cuisine in the best possible way! Makasih!

UPDATE: After reading the reply from the owner, I would not recommend anyone, especially travellers, to come here, if you don’t want to have your trips ruined by food poisoning. I have travelled to Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, India, and my stomach has always been fine with their local food. To resort to personal attack shows such pettiness and arrogance of the owner. Yikes! INITIAL REVIEW: Had the semur daging for dinner. It tasted ok, decent price for an expensive city like Amsterdam. The service was great, the waiter was friendly. However, after about 4 hours of that meal, I had a horrible food poisoning that lasted for days. Hopefully this is just a rare unfortunate mishap of the kitchen.

Bright yet cozy atmosphere, SCRUMPTIOUS food, and such lovely and kind staff members! I visited by myself for dinner and even though I was extremely hungry as this was my first meal for the day, the plate I ordered (fried noodles with three different kinds of meat) and the chips I got as starters were very filling. The ice cream and tea provided on the house were also very nice. I’m not an expert on Indonesian food but this did taste different from all the Indonesian food I’ve had so far. All in all a wonderfully satisfying experience and would recommend to anyone.

Super delicious meal with a group of friends, great service!

From the food to the service to the atmosphere, this was an incredible meal. The staff simply couldn’t have been more kind, helpful or genuine. Not only did they squeeze was in, but they took the time to explain every single dish on the tasting menu, which ones paired together, how to use the dips and side - everything. Both members of the serving team were incredibly polite, and we were blown away by the food. It was absolutely sumptuous, every pairing was incredible and the variety amazing. The price seemed very low for the amount of different dishes, and for such great service. Couldn’t recommend this restaurant highly enough.

The nicest wait staff ever. So friendly and happy to share the joy of Indonesian food. The satay sauce is something I would slap on everything I could. Very reasonably priced with a menu open for exploring many different dishes. A meal set comes with crackers, selection of mains, dessert and tea. Great vegetarian options too - love a good use of jackfruit.

We had the rijstafel which was tasty. Beef rendang was the highlight. Satay was not cooked over charcoal. Portions were on the small side. Photo is rijstafel for three.
