La Vallade in Frankendael

The basic menu is vegetarian. If you want fish or meat, you pay a fixed surcharge. One of us had the vegetarian menu. The main course turned out to be too small for the price paid. Also not very original. The meat main course, however, was tender and well-seasoned. The cold starter (melon-tomato soup) was surprisingly tasty! Cheese board – good cheeses – but with basic crackers, which doesn't fit in a restaurant. Wine not particularly flavorful, yet a whopping nine euros a glass. Service friendly.

The food was very tasty! And it was nice to have both cheese and a sweet dessert to finish. The service did feel a bit rushed, though. There could have been a bit more time between courses. Otherwise, it is a lovely place to sit outside!

I don't quite understand all the positive reviews. The food was simple and not very flavorful, not worthy of French cuisine. Service and atmosphere were otherwise good. It is not expensive, but for this price you expect a bit more.

We ate at La Vallade for the first time, having ended up there through word of mouth. The concept is nice: a changing menu featuring a few dishes with a surcharge. The exterior is reminiscent of a French village restaurant, while the interior looks more like a Berlin café. The welcome was warm and the service friendly, but there seems to be a lack of training and organization. The whole evening lasted quite a long time. It is understandable that a small kitchen has limitations regarding pace, but it felt a bit disorganized at times. It was clear, however, that there was one experienced person present alongside someone who had just started. The starter and main course were tasty and well-seasoned. The cheese board, however, was quite bare and unremarkable. The dessert was also a bit disappointing and could have received more attention. All in all, we had a fine meal, but it didn't feel entirely in proportion to the price. That said, we have eaten at restaurants that were more expensive than La Vallade where the food was technically better prepared and better ingredients were used, but the flavor was not as good as here. If we are ever in Amsterdam East again, we might give it another try, but there is clearly room for improvement.

La Vallade has been a beautiful and atmospherically decorated place for years. We tried it again after a lovely review by Mara Grimm. In the winter, it is very cold inside, drafty. We found the food quite disappointing; unimaginative, with two extremely heavy carbohydrate dishes as a starter and main course that lacked flavor. The vegetables were also overcooked and bland, and the fish looked like it came from the freezer. The staff barely spoke Dutch, but no English either; plates were repeatedly slammed down on the table. Incidentally, we found three human hairs in three different dishes. We were sitting at the long table in front of the kitchen, and the cook was scratching her head several times! And the wait staff wore their hair down. Not pleasant! The wine was very expensive in relation to the menu. We tasted slightly less pricey wine, but it was undrinkable. We still had a pleasant evening thanks to the company and the styling of the cozy building. But you don't need to go here anymore for the quality of the food or service. We made a reservation again anyway, because for certain occasions it is the best spot. Cycled 10 km, battery dead. The staff responded in broken Dutch that there were no power outlets. The owner or cook stormed out from behind the counter after a slight protest on my part and proceeded to explain to me multiple times that I apparently wasn't "listening," and that I should have thought about this better beforehand. No batteries are charged! So I'm not cycling 10 km back because of a back problem. This man was intimidating and raised his voice considerably. He became furious because "it was ridiculous that people expect etc etc." The aggression was palpable; it was terrifying, and we immediately decided to leave. We are never coming here again! Especially after the previous experience 6 weeks ago, we have now definitively decided that while the ambiance is very cute, the quality of the food, the price of the wine, the hospitality and the uninterested, rude attitude of the staff, the cold, the poor communication, and the hairs in the food—apart from the mouse we saw running through the kitchen—and an aggressive owner, really, truly mean this is the very last time we have made a reservation here. Of course we left, and hopefully we get the deposit back. What a disappointment.

Great atmosphere, good wine, and delicious food! Hidden gem

Yesterday I ate at La Vallade again, a place I used to frequent often with my parents. It felt familiar right away, because the atmosphere is still exactly as I remember it: warm, cozy, and relaxed. The food was delicious and the people there are still just as friendly. And compliments to the chef; I am absolutely a fan of his dishes. I will definitely be back soon, and I’ll bring my parents along again.

I have eaten here often, but it seems like the quality has really declined (or we were just unlucky this evening). We ate here on Sunday evening, March 1st, and although the atmosphere is very nice and the service is very friendly and attentive, the food was simply not good. The starter was tasty and the soup fine, but the main course was a strange combination of flavors that just weren't good (hard pieces of artichoke with olive and onion and mashed potatoes). The chocolate mousse dessert was whipped way too much and turned into chocolate butter, making it very heavy on the stomach. Actually, all the food was too much, unrefined, and not tasty. We also had a bad stomach ache afterwards. It is a real shame, because I still think it is a nice place, but I wonder if I will ever come back.

Gezellig! We had such a delicious meal hear. Really nice to have a set menu that was vegetarian (with an addition of fish if desired). The dishes were outstanding, and the wine and beer were lovely. A great atmosphere too --- cosy and homely. Fantastic!

The portions have gotten considerably smaller over the years, but the price hasn't. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, so maybe it's just not my kind of restaurant anymore.

The concept is so easy: they prepare a vegetarian menu with 4 courses and that is the only option you have. Fish/meat can be added for an extra price, but I just went with the base menu. The food was really delicious, portions the right size. Atmosphere really cozy and intimate. Service could be slightly better

Great food. It's hard to choose, but I was pleasantly surprised. We just found a glass at €9.75 rather expensive. It's also a shame the server changed halfway through. Nice atmosphere.

Super nice restaurant and delicious food.

When reserving by phone for a large group, the service was cold and I was immediately referred to the website. It is a shame if you want to speak to someone personally or discuss your wishes. Furthermore, I was not informed about the rules the restaurant applies regarding group reservations. To reserve online, you have to pay €80 for a group. Subsequently, I received an email stating that there is no room for groups at my desired reservation time. Only at opening or just before closing, which are not desirable times for dining. You have to contact them by phone yourself to cancel; the restaurant does not bother to contact you by phone to discuss a large reservation that is in danger of going wrong. They cannot tell you when you will receive the €80 deposit back into your account, but it takes at least 24 hours. It is very unfortunate to have lost €80 and not received proper assistance over the phone. If they had indicated immediately that they are not accommodating large groups, it would have saved time and a useless transfer that you have to hope will be back in your own account quickly. A peculiar and negative experience.

If you want to be served "real" for once and understand a thing or two about Marquises and Barons, eat here! Stoic precision from behind the open stove! I was just a little too grumpy and tipsy to say anything sensible about the food, or that those wall lamps are really inappropriate, or that I expected the crowd to be more amusing!🤣 I'll be back! A surprise. No menu, just food made with love and exceptionally delicious. Excellent service. An absolute winner.

While La Vallade remains a charming place, the value for money has really gone downhill: the five courses have become four, the portions are very small, and there's a lot of searching for unusual combinations. Add to that the fact that you're given a spoon, a fork, and a dessert spoon and have to make do with that, the service seems disinterested and doesn't speak Dutch, and the only observation is that it's unfortunately not what it used to be. A shame, but this was the last time.

I've walked by a few times, but popping in for a drink isn't appreciated. Very cold and unhelpful, and they'd rather you leave as quickly as possible.

One of my favourite places in Amsterdam Oost. It feels like a French local, in the best way possible. There's one menu each day, vegetarian as a base. Great wine, lovely staff.

I had to write this review because i couldnt stop thinking about my dinner last friday night — la valla is iconic, the food was lovely and the waiter that looks like Ellie Lust who slept in a gardenshed made my night with his funny conversations and made the entire group feel very welcome

Excellent food and service — just beware of the outdoor smoking if you're sensitive We had a wonderful dining experience overall. The food was exquisite — one of those rare meals that feels simple yet deeply thoughtful, easily justifying the price. The service matched the food: warm, attentive, and unfussy. Why not five stars? Unfortunately, indoor seating wasn’t available, so we had to sit outside in 35°C heat. What made it difficult wasn’t just the heat, but the heavy cigar and cigarette smoke drifting over from nearby guests. I have an existing lung condition caused by exposure to second-hand smoke, so this made the experience physically uncomfortable. If you’re someone who enjoys a fully “French” outdoor atmosphere — smoke and all — you might not mind. But if you're sensitive to smoke or have respiratory concerns, it may be worth waiting for cooler weather when indoor seating is an option.

A nice getaway in your own country; for an evening of holiday feeling I have been going to La Vallade with pleasure for years. I also prefer to save the restaurant for special occasions. The atmosphere is very reminiscent of the countryside decades ago, especially in the back with the floral wallpaper. Oh dear, if they ever decide to give the place a fresh look with built-in spotlights, then they will lose me. The food that is served can change even within the evening itself (for the meat/fish supplement at least, depending on stock I think, quite sustainable). But don't worry; the chefs have the gift of cooking deliciously at a consistently high level. Not on a single visit in all the years has the food been less than excellent. What I like is that the wine list now has quite a lot of variation in wines by the glass. The service is sweet and helpful ('I would choose a somewhat stronger wine with this dish than the one you are ordering now'). All in all it is a long sit, which in my opinion only contributes to the holiday feeling. I find it charming that you have to store your cutlery between courses, given the dishwasher who is clearly visible through the kitchen hatch. Recommended, but hopefully not one for the Lonely Planet. There is a nice neighbourhood feeling here.

Last course, cake with beetroot sauce.. no more meat than that Even when we complained that the food is very salty it is impossible to get something else There is also no other type of food The waiters saw that we didn't eat a large part of the dish and didn't care In short, not recommended

We love La Vallade. It's our neighbourhood cafe just steps from our front door. The menu changes nearly every day and that the space feels homey and charming. We also love that there aren't any choices you have to make and that the place is really focused on sustainability and seasonality. We went on Sunday, and they were trying out their vegan-only menu for the first time. It was FANTASTIC. We are neither vegans nor vegetarians, so didn't go specifically for the vegan menu. If the staff hadn't told us the menu was vegan, I wouldn't have believed them. Everything was so delicious, flavourful and you still got the signature "butter" fullness of French cuisine. Thank you La Vallade team! We'll be back, of course ;)

Een van mijn slechtste horecaervaringen ooit. Ten eerste mag je niet zelf kiezen maar moet je het menu van die dag nemen, voor 38, 50 pp. Best duur voor vegetarisch eten vind ik. Op de avond dat ik er was stond er een kaasplank op het menu. Ik hou niet van kaas en vertelde dat. Nou, dan had ik pech gehad, ze hadden niets vervangends. We moesten heel lang wachten voor we wat te eten kregen. Tussen het voor- en hoofdgerecht zat ook heel veel tijd. Na het hoofdgerecht, dat wel lekker was, kregen mijn tafelgenoten dus die kaasplank. Ik kreeg niets. Daarna kregen we nog een tweede dessert: chocolademousse. Er werd door de ober ook nog 'grappig' gedaan: wilde ik dit toetje misschien ook niet? Ik moest blijkbaar op verschillende manieren weten dat het heel gek was dat ik die kaasplank niet wilde. De chocolademousse was trouwens ook niet lekker. Daar zaten zoveel zoutkristallen in dat ik na één hap genoeg had. Met honger ging ik huiswaarts, toch moest er ook voor mij de volle mep van 38,50 worden betaald. Nooit meer La Vallade.

The three of us had a delicious meal here on October 31, 2024. Highly recommended. Strangely enough, our previous review did not go through or be posted, so we are trying again. A small side note, however. Shortly after our visit, we asked via their email address, purely out of interest, what was on the plate when the starter was served, because we clearly had not paid attention during the explanation (sorry). Unfortunately, they did not bother to respond to that or to send a response anyway. By the way, only the 5 stars (and a few 4 stars) are shown as a review on the La Vallade website. Makes you think. Still a shame and a missed opportunity.

What an amazing Sunday afternoon lunch! Excellent food in a quaint setting.

La Vallade is a real classic in the East. French authentic atmosphere with fixed three-course menu, nice wines and casual service. It has been nice for years and is still nice, but the food has become a bit meager. Like the other day, the starter was finished with some lettuce leaves with stray tomatoes and a little sufficient dressing. As a result, it has actually become a bit too expensive for what food it offers... but it remains cozy inside and the terrace is lovely in the summer.

Wonderful dining experience. Food was beautiful, the setting extremely charming and the staff friendly and accommodating. I was back in Amsterdam and only had time for 1 meal out to see my family and we had a lovely night. As long as you don't mind "eten wat de pot schaft" (they only have 1 set menu every day, the chef chooses and prepares the same menu for each diner) it's a great night out.

110 e lode con applauso un ristorante che è capitato per caso perché vicino all'albergo. Una sorpresa bellisima essenzialmente vegetariano, ogni giorno il cuoco decide cosa fare. La presentazione dei piatti ed il loro sapore oltre il piacevole servizio tutto eccellente e squisito. Anche possibile inserire carne ottima tagliata o pesce. Menu fisso a sorpresa 3 portate incluso formaggi e dolce. Tutto ad prezzo onestissimo anche per Amsterdam in atmosfera rilassante e calda. Super super super consigliato

Vegetarian restaurant where you eat whatever is available (4 courses, 3rd course is always a cheese board). The space inside is quite cramped, especially if you are with a larger group. Dishes are made from fresh ingredients and the taste is sometimes a bit flat. The service is friendly but not very attentive.

I used to come to this place , unfortunately I was extremely disappointed by the dishes served, the combination did not make any sense , no test at all the worse was the dessert, I don’t know if they have changed cuisine chef but today I won’t recommend this place at all

We went to la Vallade on a Monday night because everything else in the hood was fully booked or closed. It was far above expectations on all accounts, in terms of service (the French waiter was great), taste and atmosphere. We took the set menu which consisted of starter, main with guinea fowl, cheeses and ice cream desert. Each course was of high level. It is located on Ringdijk which gives a kind of holiday feeling as if you’re in the French countryside. A hidden gem in East.

We were forgotten between 1st and 2nd course for an hour, staff was barely apologising and did not treat us well. There was a clear difference of treatment from one customer to another. Was was good up until the second course, we left afterwards so not sure about the rest

When you get in you get transported to a little cosy place in France with some tones of Amsterdam. There is a menu where you can choose to add fish/meat. I typically dont like to feel I dont have choice BUT I love the food each and everytime I come here. The only thing in common all the time is the amazing taste and superb combi's for a really good price (in the context of Amsterdam). Will keep coming back to this tasteful and cosy place with always great service

Very good little restaurant, a little hidden. The chef does everything himself in front of us, there is only 1 menu. Desert cheese starter. It's vegetarian we had a possible poison option. They are nice and helpful but it takes more than 2.5 hours for dinner. You must book in advance, stop by or call. Please note they do not accept credit cards, only debit or cash.

Eating at La Vallade is a very pleasant experience. First of all because of the 3-course menu: you eat what is available, so it is determined for you and I think that is a wonderful advantage. Because I like a lot and like a lot, I have never been disappointed. I think it is important to be able to eat vegetarian. Because that is part of the concept and therefore their specialty, I know that there is a very good chance that it will be very tasty! In addition, I think it's a really shitty restaurant. Very cozy and cozy, there is an extensive wine list and very friendly service who approach you in a nice, personal way. Don't go here if you want a quick bite to eat, because that's not the intention. On the other hand, you will be served quickly, but you will simply go along with the 3-course menu and that invites you to eat and drink completely in peace. Price-quality ratio is well balanced. Not cheap, but not too expensive either. You can also request a supplement for meat/fish. You pay about 10 euros extra for that, but I think that's completely justified! Again: if you're not a foodie, you certainly won't be disappointed. Top spot!

Voorheen mijn lievelingsrestaurant maar wat een bizar slechte ervaring gisteren. Het eten werd als een sneltrein neergezet, maar het toppunt was de onbeschofte mannelijke medewerker. Kom niet meer terug.

Wat was het schrikken 20 oktober 2023. Dit restaurant is erg achteruit gegaan. Allereerst wordt er flink geduwd, je moet om 20:00 uur weg zijn voor de tweede shift. De wijn was slecht, de salade met te veel dressing. De groente slecht verdeeld tussen ons twee. Noot komen we meer terug.

Heel merkwaardig. Tent staat goed bekend, maar waarom? Concept dwingt je om zowel kaas als dessert te nemen. Nergens in de wereld vertoond en ook zonder enige logica. Alle gangen waren matig en fantasieloos. Hoofdgerecht gewoon koud. Wij zouden letterlijks niets aan onze vrienden voorzetten hiervan. Dranken waren goed en een van de bedienden ook, maar verder zeer zwak eten voor die prijs. Toen ik commentaar gaf op een gang werd ober boos. Werd verder niets meer aan ons gevraagd ook niet na afloop. Totaal onprofessioneel gedrag.

Erg gastvrije plek. Heerlijk gegeten. 4 gangen vega dinner (met vis optie) met erg smakelijke gerechten. Mooi groot terras, vlotte bediening. Dagelijks wisselend menu. Echt een aanrader.

Twee dagen achter elkaar bij La Vallade gegeten met op beide dagen een andere chef en een ander gerecht. De eenvoud van de kaart (er is één 4-gangen menu) spreekt erg aan. De kwaliteit van de gerechten zeer hoog en smaakvol. De gastvrijheid met goede bediening was op beide dagen uitstekend.

Heerlijke plek om buiten op het terras van La Vallade een bakje koffie te nemen. Met uitzicht op de Ringdijk.

Uniek restaurant in de Watergraafsmeer. Nooit geweest? Dan zeker gaan. Je hebt niets te kiezen, maar dat is nooit een tegenvaller. Service is top en relaxed, eten altijd goed qua uitvoering en smaak.

Chef Robin maakte ons helemaal blij. Ze liet de ingrediënten schijnen en het zag er allemaal prachtig uit. Een genot om geserveerd te worden door de spontane crew.

Our go to and favorite neighbourhood restaurant: its cosy, has super friendly service and great food at a good price. They have a fixed but always changing 4course menu, so there is always a reason to come back soon to this place!

La Vallade has become a place of the heart. The first time we saw it passing by the Ringvaart Canal and we thought “how cool is that place”!! Next time we went there with friends and we felt literally welcomed as if at home. Since then, the deliciously curated fresh food, and the true care and familiarity of the staff made us come back over and over. The menu is fixed and it changes seasonally every week or so. Cosy in the winter and during the summer - it is super welcoming also on its open air terrace. We could not recommend it more. For romantic dinners, to surprise work colleagues, or with old&new friends - at La Vallade they will take care of you, and your palate, in the most amazing way!

I will start with the good things. This place should have received a Michelin star a long time ago. The food is so delicious and fresh, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is so pleasant. A restaurant is only as good as its service. It took 1,5 hour before the second plate was served. The waitress reacted arrogant and unfriendly upon our questions. From the first minute everything we asked for felt like too much. Food was mediocre: lacking flavor and texture. Sadly the charming place that i remember from the past is lost. The visible remnants are here but the body became soulless
