Fate gave us a trip to Leiden. Leiden is a small Amsterdam. Walking through the city, we came to a place where we unexpectedly experienced a special state of HAPPINESS. Madame Marie's home coffee shop. It smells of happiness here, The hot smell of warm cakes with cinnamon and whipped cream mixed with the classic smells of freshly ground coffee, hot chocolate, fragrant cocoa... Aromas of a Peaceful Life. The rain sang outside the window. I cried as I would cry in the warm embrace of God Het lot gaf ons een reis naar Leiden. Leiden is een klein Amsterdam. Wandelend door de stad kwamen op een plek waar we onverwacht een bijzoregen staat van GELEUK ervoeren. Het koffiehuis van Madame Marie. It smells here like happiness. The warm smell of warm cakes with cinnamon and whipped cream mixed with the classic smells of freshly ground coffee, warm chocolate milk, fragrant cocoa... Aromas of a peaceful life. De regen zong buiten het raam. Ik huilde as if ik zou huilen in de warme omhelzing van God.

Excellent coffee and the most delicious apple pie, friendly and patient staff, limited seating but so worth trying to get a spot! Such a genuine, beautiful experience.

The apple pie was divine! Not too sweet or too dry. The vibe was cute, a cute little store with warmth host. May have to wait a little while on weekends, but definitely worth it!

Awesome Dutch apple pie served with freshly whipped cream (I literally saw them produce the new batches inside the shop). The coffee was nice and made properly, but don't expect any fancy third wave style coffee, they do more traditional darker roast beans here!

I am not saying this lightly: this is the best Apple pie I’ve ever eaten. In fact I’m actually very picky about Apple pie, I don’t like when the apples are too hard or slimy. However this was perfect. The apples were delicious; soft and cinnamon-y. The tart itself was impressively tall and balanced out the filling. I would recommend getting the proper slices and it’s served with a good helping of cream. The chai lattes we had were also lovely.

Very special, small, hidden spot in the center of Leiden. Very limited cake menu (only apple pie 👊), nice little choice. Also good coffee and tea. Special idiosyncratic owner who serves you with respect and a certain charisma. Not much space in the house, but very back in time and a bit spartan. Normal prices. No map. No fuss. Just coffee, tea and apple pie. Very nice to do and definitely recommended for people who don't like the standard chains in the Netherlands for coffee and cake.

A mega recommendation if you are looking for good coffee, a cozy atmosphere and cake in Leiden. There is no menu, but there is a very good home-baked apple pie with fresh whipped cream. We paid €20.50 for a flat white with oat milk, cappuccino and two large pieces of apple pie with cream and found the prices justified. In the café itself there are just 5 tables, which creates a very great, intimate atmosphere. We'll be back :)

Lovely, cosy place with excellent apple pie and hot drinks

At Madame Marie you can eat the tastiest apple pie! In any case, the tastiest I've ever tasted. It's crispy, tasty and looks great too! Everything is handmade and super fresh from our own kitchen. You can also come here for a delicious cup of coffee/cappuccino of your choice. Vegan milk is also available. Inside the house - which is also a small museum in itself - there is a nice, cozy atmosphere and the service is friendly and hospitable. I have been here several times with friends and colleagues and everyone is happy with the coffee, cake or muffins! When the weather is nice you can sit outside on the terrace in the middle of two churches right on the Rapenburg. Absolutely recommended!!!

Best little hidden secret in Leiden! There is only the apple pie to eat, and it's SO worth it. Coffee is also excellent, and the staff are so lovely.

Madame Marie is a very nice and cozy place. However, the owner was very unpleasant with us. I went there with my mother and my little brother (a kid), and we ordered two pieces of cake and two capuccinos. We didn't order anything to drink for my brother since he doesn't drink coffee and my mom didn't want to eat a whole piece of cake by herself, so she shared it with him. As soon as the owner noticed it, she completely changed her behavior towards us. She told me that next time we should all order a drink and a cake, as her policy states (which is written in a small piece of paper on the counter), and I told her that we ordered two cakes and two coffees (just like her policy says) and she kept saying that my brother had to also have coffee or a whole combo, which as I'm sure you understand, doesn't make any sense since why does he have to order a coffee in order to eat a piece of cake? I usually do not bother to explain when my reviews are bad, but in this case, she was really unpleasant and made us feel like we were trying to trick her policy, and get more for less. Anyways, we ended up paying 21€ for two pieces of cake that weren't correctly baked (we didn't finish the cakes because of this) and two coffees (they were very good tho). Also, when she asked why we didn't finish our cakes and we told her that it was because they weren't properly baked, she replied with a "well, should I throw it away? Next time you can order a muffin". As you might have guessed, there is not gonna be a next time. I was really disappointed, because it was my first time there, and I was really looking forward to eating something nice and fresh while enjoying the cute place. Sadly, it wasn't like this in the end. I really hope she reads this review and thinks about the way she treats her customers and how she applies her policy (apparently if two of you go there and one is diabetic you still need to take the cake; or if you don't feel like drinking something, you still need to order a beverage. Nonsense).

This is hands down the best apple pie I’ve ever had. The flavors were unreal—didn’t even know apples could taste that good. It’s a family-run place, and the owner’s daughter served us. She was so kind and genuine, you could tell they put their heart into everything here. Amazing pie, warm service, and a cozy vibe. Can’t recommend it enough.

I love coming here! It can be a bit full at times (there's a reason for that), but the location is so pretty and quaint, the owner is friendly, the hot drinks really good and I can only RECOMMEND the apple pie in capitals. Not too sweet, great consistency (neither dry nor too soft), and it tastes truly homemade (which it is, you can watch them make the cake through the window to the kitchen). I hope I can come back many times this winter. Thank you, Madame Marie!

The Apple tart is good. It’s not mind blowing but yes it is good. Very buttery. However the dirty chai latte was actually amazing. Loved it. And the owner is of course very nice and welcoming.

Arm yourself with patience, you who enter. This place is a zen exercise. Friendly service but embarrassingly slow and quite disorganised. The cake - you came for that - is good but 90% is made of apples. So basically you will be eating cooked apples. The environment is very nice and welcoming. In all honesty, I don't know whether to recommend it. Do your test!

Best apple pie place in Leiden 😊 But please don't go all at once! It's a small place and very often some waiting time to sit down. We are looking forward to eating there again in September! The big slices with whipped cream are the best slices.

Best apple pie I had in the Netherlands. It beats those famous shops in Amsterdam and the Hague. The atmosphere is cozy, with lovely antique furniture and decorations. It's not crowded so that you can take your time enjoying the food there. A must when I revisit Leiden in the future.

We walked past here last year on the recommendation of a colleague. A place with apple pie that you should not miss and should really try. That colleague had definitely given a good tip. This apple pie….OMG! Next level homemade….and after that I didn't want to eat apple pie in other lunchrooms for a long time. It just wouldn't beat the taste. The shortcrust pastry was wonderfully fresh and crispy. The whipped cream was whipped old-fashioned and nothing tasted too sweet. We had a nice conversation with the owner. A small place in her house... on the ground floor is the coffee & cake (apple pie only) room. A living room idea. Opened in corona time. I see that it is now temporarily closed on Google, but I hope it opens again because I would like to visit again.

It is a cozy cafe that serves delicious homemade apply pie with freshly made whip cream, warm coffee , and hot chocolate. Nothing fancy inside but you get a homey vibe, like visiting your grandma in a Sunday morning and she serves you a freshly made applepie. Space is small but try not to miss this when you are in Leiden.

Place is gorgeous, apple pie is impeccable, coffee is good. Its great but also expensive :-) so, yeah, it’s super great and peaceful and slow and chill but that’s in the price (20 euros for two slices and two coffees)

We missed the hospitality, the service seemed businesslike and rushed. The bill of more than €10 per person for coffee with apple pie was quite high.

The environment and atmosphere are very nice. A boutique cafe. There is only apple tart for food. Be sure to try it. Their coffee was also very nice.

Good coffee and an amazing apple pie muffin. The person with the big bowl of fresh cream has her own system for helping customers: it is not always first come first served. You may wait, and one pair of OGs skipped the queue without apology. She has the energy of a cheerfully bubbling pot about to boil over. Watch out, if you rub her the wrong way, she'll drop a dollop of her dreamy cream precisely where you don't want it. Slap! Right on top of that delicious pie: take that!

Toevallig liepen we hier langs. Bij binnenkomst rook je de heerlijke verse appeltaart. We namen een klein appeltaartje en wat te drinken. De appeltaart was goed op smaak, lekkere zure appels en een goede, knapperige korst.

As all the reviews have stated, the best apple pie in Leiden. There's a reason people are often waiting so long, it's amazing pie. But, as others have said it's a "one man show" so be patient, and you will be rewarded with wonderful apple pie and great coffee. If you're coming here for your first coffee of the morning or your first meal and you're the impatient/grumpy type, sort yourself out first. This is an indulgence trip. A moment of decadence and relaxation. If you get the vibe, you get the vibe. To the reviewers that skipped out on the pie and left, I pity all of you.

This is a tiny beautiful cafe, with a charming owner whose food and coffee are perfect but not at all fussy. This place is something really special, beautiful and pure.

You can't just get a great coffee or tea (plant based milk is available too) and an heart-filling dutch apple pie, but the ambience and the coziness of this cafe' is just on another level. [ it is indeed tiny, but that is also what makes it special..but despite that there are roughly 18 seats in total, spread on two levels ]. Highly recommended... the apple pie by Winkel 43 is very nice, but on the other side here, you will get something that is homemade and every time will taste slightly different...and that is what makes this place more special.

Super cozy cafe. I really loved the atmosphere. Unfortunately we did not taste the apple pies but they look delicious and the portions seemed satisfied. Iam not super satisfied with the service. We were waiting for more than a half hour to order. I totally understand that one person does everything, but the serving lady told us that she will go first to one company which arrived before us. But then she served two more companies who arrived after us. She left us in the end. I found this a little bit unfair and irritating. I hope that it was just a random incident. I would like to visit the cafe again and taste the apple pie. But I hope that I will confront a better service attitude next time ;). Give it a try for sure!

Found this place on the social media. Didn't expect it'd be full, but it was PACKED! Especially at around 12.30 p.m. Fortunately we got one table after the third try. I'd say the apple pie there is worth waiting. Though the price is a bit high, the place is still worth to visit. The apple pie is big. It's soft inside with lots of apples, but it's crunchy outside. The hot chocolate is in a big cup. There are only 6 tables. A small but cozy place. Btw, it's pet-friendly.

Zo lang woon ik al in Leiden en nog nooit bij deze geweldige, mooie, super gezellige plek geweest. De appeltaartjes werden vers gemaakt samen met de slagroom en waren heerlijk! De eigenaresse is super vriendelijk ook 😃 Goede grote kwakken slagroom kregen we en de sfeer is zooo kneuterig! Ik kom 100% terug hier! 🍀🙋🏻‍♀️
