Maenaam Thai Restaurant in Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

The menu has a huge (too many) number of choices, which probably indicates that nothing is truly freshly prepared or homemade. The pad thai wasn't to my liking and tasted like a store-bought sweet and sour sauce. The green chicken curry wasn't up to par either. The place was very noisy with tables crammed together.

We want to return to this restaurant again and again. Authentic atmosphere, fantastic food, friendly service, and very reasonably priced. Well worth every star!

The tom kha soup and pad prik (chicken with red curry and green beans) were both delicate, delicious, and beautifully presented. If you like your food spicy, ask them to bump up the level — it’s mild. The server was friendly and efficient. The decor is fine, but there was a strong smell of artificial fragrance, like toilet deodorizer, that interfered with our enjoyment of the food. If you are sensitive to such things, I suggest sitting by the door. To the restaurant: please consider changing to unscented products!

We had a great dinner at Maenaam. We started with Tom Kha Kai (15) and Tom Kha Kung (16), which made for a very promising beginning. For mains, the Plaa Muk Shoe Shie (21) was good, but the Massaman Kai (87) was the highlight of the meal. The service was very friendly—I’d highly recommend this spot to all Thai food lovers.

Outstanding service by Sammy and rest of the team. Memorable food (lot of Veg/Vegan options along with typical plethora of choices for Fish/ Meat lovers) with exemplary service makes it a worthwhile place to visit in busy Amsterdam for among the best Thai food you can get in town. We had to hardly wait to get a table but it is recommended to reserve a table considering it is a busy area and popular restaurant. We ordered few shrimp dishes, Veg mushroom coriander soup, Pad Si Yu chicken (which is not in menu but they were very gracious enough to prepare it custom for us), Phad Pak Tofu cashew nut dish. Everything tasted amazing and at the right level of hotness. The best part was the service, Sammy and rest of the team made us feel more than just home. They were extremely kid friendly as well. The neighborhood has plenty of options for food, drinks, and dessert, but the level of service will keep them in front for a long time to come.

Great taste and good commitment to pick up time, certainly going back to some of those shrimp curry and chicken bamboo starter. Adding to my 4 year old review, I still enjoy going there and everything I’ve tried so far is delicious. The restaurant is cosy and you could be seated very close to a stranger, adds to the charm of the place.

I have no words to describe the culinary experience I had at this Thai restaurant; it was pure bliss. Thank you to the chef! It was, by far, one of the best green and massaman curries we've ever eaten. This restaurant, with its wood-paneled decor and warm, intimate atmosphere, coupled with attentive and refined service, is a one-way ticket to Southeast Asia (a region I know well). The perfect mastery of aromas and ingredients allowed us to experience a true explosion of flavors. The portions are more than generous, and everything was served on plates as beautiful in presentation as they were delicious. The five stars are richly deserved for this gem, because it truly is a rare pearl in Amsterdam that, for a fleeting moment, transported me back to the Land of Smiles, my beloved Thailand.

I’m into very colourful food and obviously lots of flavor. So when this food was served to us, i was in awe knowing it is just a small restaurant we passed by while strolling in the central of Amsterdam. This presentation making my meal more appealing. Is it good? Yes, sa katunayan, we order extra food while we are diggin. A very authentic thai food, affordable price and a very good taste. So when you go to Amsterdam, check this restaurant, MaeNaam Thai Restaurant, small place but the food was really great, friendy workers and near to the center.

This Thai restaurant is absolutely amazing! The food is incredible delicious-full of authentic Thai flavours that really remind me of home. The service is friendly, attentive, and make you feel truly welcome. Every was perfect from start to finish. We didn’t have reservations and they squeezed us in and so glad they did. We ordered Massaman curry and Pad Thai and it did not disappoint. Very small restaurant yet they make it work. These guys definitely work hard.

The foods were really tasty. We asked them to make the foods moderately spicy they did it perfectly. But the space is small and we sat near the entrance door, so everytime whenever someone left the door hitting the chair.

With so many glowing reviews, I thought I’d struck gold. Boy, was I wrong. Having just landed in Amsterdam after a long-haul flight, I was too jet-lagged to hunt for hidden gems, so I took a leap of faith and went with Maenaam Thai. If food blogging has taught me anything, it’s that leaps of faith are usually rewarded… but not this time. I ordered the Phad Krapao Moo with Rice (Stir-Fried Minced Pork with Chili and Thai Basil) — a dish so common in Thailand you can find it anywhere from street carts to Michelin-starred kitchens. Safe choice, right? Apparently not. The flavor was, let’s say, polite — mild, restrained, the kind of taste you’d introduce to your grandmother if she was allergic to spice. Not bad, just… aggressively average. My own homemade version — made while wearing pajamas and yelling at Netflix — is more flavorful. Portion size was generous, though, so points for quantity over quality. Here’s the kicker: in Thailand, this dish nearly always comes crowned with a sunny-side-up egg. Here? It’s a “luxury add-on” for an extra €4.95. For that price, I expect the chicken to personally deliver the egg to my table and apologize for the inconvenience. The spring rolls were next — and I suspect they had traveled a long journey too, from the freezer aisle to the deep fryer. The filling was so minimal I considered submitting a missing person’s report. The one saving grace? Thai Iced Milk Tea. It was decent. Not life-changing, but at least it reminded me of why I like Thai cuisine in the first place. Overall, Maenaam Thai is like a movie with a great trailer but a disappointing ending — it looks promising, delivers big portions, but lacks the soul and punch of the real thing.

Yes, it was chaotic. Yes, the rosé arrived, but the beer didn't. Yes, my wife got the wrong (also delicious) dish. Yes, it was packed. But so what? The food was delicious, and the atmosphere felt like we were in Thailand itself. We didn't have to take the bus. So, plenty of time and no modern hassle with shifts and all that. We'd love to come back and eat here again.

Great place! The atmosphere is very nice in here and all the staff are extremely friendly. We were offered a complimentary dish (I forgot the name but it was amazing). The food isn’t very expensive it’s just the drinks are small in Amsterdam in general and I am foreign and we usually spend less on drinks as they are bigger and they last us longer.

Never go when it's crowded. There's no need to wait to eat. It's like a flea market. The taste is very different from what I had in Thailand. The pad thai is stir-fried with ketchup. Don't order pad thai.

Small Thai restaurant. Large menu and great food. Casual and fast. My husband and I arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday night. There was a small line at the door. It took a little while to get a table. There was a consistent line to get in. Definitely a very popular little restaurant! The food was worth the wait.

Food is nice but the staff definitely need training on how to interact with customers. One staff serves food without saying any word and collects the plates without saying anything and even has no eye contact like you don’t exist. Another staff turns their back to you while the conversation has not yet finished. I understand the busyness but still it is not a good etiquette to do this to the customers.

Quite possibly one of the best Thai restaurants in Amsterdam. The food was absolutely delectable — bursting with authentic flavours, perfectly cooked, and full of care in every bite. The duck I ordered and egg fried rice stood out so much. Every dish was an absolute hit — full of flavour and beautifully prepared. All parties at the table ended with empty plates, which says it all. No leftovers, just happy bellies and satisfied taste buds. But what truly made the experience unforgettable was the incredible service. The owner and staff went out of their way to create a table for us outside when there weren’t any available — just so we could enjoy our meal comfortably. That level of kindness and hospitality is rare and so appreciated. Everyone was so friendly, warm, and welcoming — it felt less like a restaurant visit and more like being hosted by old friends. Can’t wait to come back. A must-visit if you’re in Amsterdam. So much love from London ❤️🇳🇱

I was excited that we found a thai food restaurant, but disappointed when I got to the hotel and realized that they got our order wrong. If only they didn’t get mistaken by my least favorite thai curry. But the yellow one was really good. Just check your orders!

Reservations were rigged – customer-unfriendly approach. We had reserved our table for 7:00 PM. A 5-minute wait, 25 minutes. We stood outside for 30 minutes without a drink, and no attention. No one connected us, and no apology. The staff lied about the time of the reservation to a group of young people who were ahead of us. Our questions almost led to an argument.

In hartje Amsterdam, en toch zeer goed bereikbaar. Heerlijk restaurant met heerlijke Thaise smaken en geuren. Een zeer uitgebreide kaart en de prijzen zeer redelijk. Reserveren is zeker een must, indien je niet teleurgesteld wilt worden. Druk, gezellig en service fantastisch. Eten werd snel opgediend. Dit is een aanrader (staat bij mij zeer hoog nu op de lijst!). (complimenten aan het hele team van Maenaam Thai Restaurant!)

Went for a quick take out and service was efficient quick and staff was very kind. Food was good, portions were great and loved everything that I got. Would definitely love to try as sit down, but take out was great! Definitely recommend!

This family run place is fantastic. Mum and Dad in the kitchen, Son running the floor, grandson waiting tables. Last visit their grandson's friends were waiting tables, and doing a splendid job even though it was WELL busy. We ate here 3 times in 5 days on our last trip to Amsterdam. Sometimes you need to wait for a table.... wait! It's worth it, or go off peak. Every dish we tried was perfect and piping hot. Ask for more free rice if you need it. Always our first port of call on every trip.

This has become our regular place when in The Dam. We had the amazing meals at Meanam Thai for several years now. Food is always great and fast out of the kitchen. Service is efficient and friendly. We enjoy this place so much that the only reason we don't go there every meal when in Amsterdam is only as i feel a tad embarrassed to be going there every day 😁. Keep up the great work x. Unfortunately never take any photos of the food as I'm too busy eating it. Here's a photo of some wine instead 😄.

The best tasting pork chowder and Thai milk tea I've ever had in the Netherlands! Just tell the waiter that you want Thai style and less sugar, and you can eat very authentic pork chowder - but be prepared, the spiciness is also the original Thai level! 🌶️ Although Thai milk is not the common orange-red color, it has a rich milky aroma and a smooth taste, and it tastes super satisfying. Highly recommended to those who like authentic Thai cuisine!

If you want Thai food, this place is the real deal. It's a little hole in the wall, but trust me... the food is incredibly good. The menu is enormous.. pretty much every Thai dish you can think of. I got overwhelmed and went basic with the chicken pad thai. But let me tell you it was the best chicken pad thai I have ever had! We also ordered spring rolls as an appetizer, which was equally delicious. My only complaint is that the service was really slow. I don't know if the server forgot to put our order in but it probably took 30 minutes to get our drinks and then another 30 minutes to get our food and then another 45 minutes for anyone to bring our check. I know that the service in Europe is a lot slower and more relaxed than the States, but this was really slow. I'm still going to rate it 5 stars, though, because the food was just that good.

The food was really street market style Thai. The dishes were of ample portions. No spicy just salt. Street stall style presentation not like the photos. The servant interjected with the meeting of our party asking offensive personal questions about how we know each other. I'd never go back here. Ridiculously expensive.

The food is world-class! We went there twice because of the excellent food! The first time, we didn't have a reservation, but we still got a seat after a short wait. The young waiter was prompt and friendly despite the full house. The second time, we had a reservation, and our table was waiting for us. Even though it wasn't busy, the service wasn't great. Anyway, the food was excellent!

Don't be fooled by the exterior window; it's all about the welcome, the service, and the quality of the food. I highly recommend it.
