Mexicaans Restaurant Terschelling in Wijk 01 Midsland

It couldn't get much worse. Guacamole is a watery caricature. Good tortilla chips are available everywhere these days, but these are stale and soggy. The plates look like a rain-soaked Frida Kahlo painting. Absolutely everything is either watery or bone dry, and everything tastes like soup vegetables. I don't claim to have all the answers, but I ran a Mexican wholesale business for a number of years, and I couldn't find much that was truly Mexican here. The intense (microwave?) heat didn't exactly make us happy either.

I found the price-quality ratio disappointing. Two small pastry rolls and side dishes for 23.95 euros...

The restaurant looks nice. Not very hospitable; they give the impression that you have to leave as soon as possible and rush with everything. Order quickly, eat quickly, and leave. The restaurant was far from full, but still, it wasn't a relaxing experience. The food arrived in about 5 minutes to a maximum of 10 minutes, tasted like it was simply made with instant honey mix, and cost about €20. Broth-like. If you want a nice, cozy dinner out on Terschelling, not recommended. If you want a quick, simple meal; fine.

Even for a 3-year-old who had already drunk a paid glass of lemonade, they refuse to pour a glass of tap water. Disappointing. The food was tasty though.

It started with the reservation over the phone. We got the owner on the line; what an unpleasant person, so grumpy. We asked for a table outside; this wasn't possible, even though there are chairs and tables outside, they are unfortunately not being used. Then we asked for a table by the window; she indicated she didn't have one, even though when we arrived, the tables by the window remained empty the entire evening—very absurd?! When we arrived there, we immediately noticed what kind of service this was going to be; I have never experienced anything like it. The owner took our drink orders, which didn't go entirely smoothly with such a grumpy face. Then we received our drinks, and she threw the coasters at everyone to put the drinks on; you should have seen it for yourself, it looked awful... We also received orders in a tray that everyone just had to set themselves! It also seemed too heavy to take a photo at the table. It seemed like everything was too much for the taller girl too, because you could see that the owner had already whispered all the instructions to her when they had nothing to do for a moment. The shorter girl is friendly, smiling, and approachable. Someone at our table was given the chicken patties as an alternative because the other chicken was sold out, but he pointed out that they were mega salty... Otherwise, the food and atmosphere were fine. The service was bad because that girl with the smile works there; otherwise, it would be very bad. The prices are very high, so don't be surprised. There were four of us, and we even chatted with the owner outside for a while, which was very pleasant. TIP The owner should NOT work in the service area; she is incapable of it. She is anything but up for a social chat or hospitality!

We came here for the second time, after having eaten here once before in 2021. It tasted just like old times! Friendly and fast service.

Wow, incredibly delicious food! So much choice. Friendly service, anything is possible, extra sauce, or no sauce at all. A wonderful experience, we love coming here! Unfortunately, I cannot respond to the review by Paulien Andriessen, who gives everything a 1, but we were in the restaurant at the time too. She keeps saying 'we' in her review, but as guests, we saw that the rest of the party was terribly embarrassed. Also, a family member came back to apologize for the woman who behaved extremely badly; many more people in the restaurant agreed with that at the time. Alternatives were definitely offered, but the lady was being difficult and we noticed that the family found this very unpleasant. Anyway, unfortunately, I couldn't respond to the lady's review, hoping she would be reasonable and remove it. It's a shame that it has to be this way. We have been coming here for over 30 years and have never had any trouble, and everything is always taken care of. 🫶

Unfortunately, a very disappointing experience. The quality of the meat was truly substandard. We returned the entire piece of meat because it simply wasn't good. Initially, the impression was given that a suitable solution would be found. Unfortunately, that turned out to be completely untrue. Instead of seriously resolving the complaint, we were essentially told that we were just out of luck. We found this very disappointing and completely unfriendly to customers. Mistakes can happen in any restaurant. It is precisely the way in which they are handled that determines whether you leave with a good feeling as a guest. Unfortunately, this restaurant fell completely short in that regard. For us, this was the first and last time. We therefore cannot recommend this restaurant.

Disappointing. Tasteless, and prepared with little feel for Mexican cuisine. It seemed as if a chef in training had prepared the food. All the ingredients were there, but little good was done with them. Not recommended.

We were here a few years ago as well, and the food was fine then. This time, however, we were disappointed. There was a lot of cartilage in the meat. The main course was also served surprisingly quickly, as if it had just been popped in the microwave. The decor is also a shadow of its former glory. An upgrade wouldn't hurt. When we received the bill, it listed drinks we hadn't had. We won't be returning here anytime soon.

Oh dear, we didn't even give these poor people a tip, a disgrace on our part. But what a load of heartlessness. Both the food and the service. Hopefully they were having an off day!

This is truly special. I walked in at the end of Oerol. As I entered, I said: “I’m completely done with the Oerol vegetarian options.” I sat down comfortably and we wanted to order. Before I could even start, the waitress (Denise) informed me: “I heard you came here for the meat, but our T-bone is sold out. We do have Rib-eye and steak, but I just wanted to mention that beforehand.” A moment later, she returned: “I just consulted with the chef, but he’s happy to make something the same for you.” This reaction from the wait staff and the chef is better than a Michelin-star experience. This is what hospitality is all about!!!

Boring, unimaginative food. Mexican cooked with a Dutch touch. Watery guacamole, overcooked rice, and enchiladas made with ready-made wraps from a supermarket. We will not be eating here again.

On a sunny, dreary day, we felt like filling our empty bellies. We decided to go to the Mexican restaurant. It turned out to be a great idea. The nachos were good, and the guacamole was amazing. The burritos and the rest of the food were also very tasty. However, I wouldn't order a children's ice cream if you're slightly older than the average child. The staff will laugh at you. Otherwise, the service was friendly! We will definitely come here again and order a children's ice cream.

We went out for dinner today with six of us and there is only one word: incredibly delicious food, friendly service, top restaurant, definitely recommended.

As a true food critic, I can say that you can eat well at this restaurant. I therefore recommend it if you are on Terschelling.

On April 3rd, we dined at Mexican Restaurant El Léon Rojo on Terschelling. What immediately stands out is the incredibly nice decor. The restaurant truly has its own atmosphere: colorful, warm, cozy, and entirely in Mexican style. It feels like a pleasant place to sit right away, and the service was friendly and relaxed. The food was fine, and the plates were generously filled. We had Mexican dishes including rice, beans, guacamole, salsa, and stewed meat. Everything tasted good, and you certainly won't leave here hungry. For us, however, the food didn't really rise above the level of a good home-cooked meal. It was tasty and well-presented, but from a culinary perspective, not very surprising or special. As far as we are concerned, the strength of this restaurant lies mainly in the atmosphere, the coziness, and the friendly service. All in all, a nice place for a relaxed evening out on Terschelling, especially if you are in the mood for an informal Mexican meal in a cheerful setting. Not the best dinner of our holiday, but certainly a restaurant you leave with a good feeling.

If you're visiting Terschelling, you absolutely must eat here. We always eat here when we're on the island. Great Mexican dishes, fantastic steaks, a cheesecake to die for, reasonable prices, super friendly and attentive service, and an authentic atmosphere.

We had another great meal here; we hadn't been here for a while. But the food was definitely good again, and the menu is extensive! ✅️ The service was also attentive and friendly, though the music was a bit too loud.

We wanted to eat Mexican food and found this nice-looking restaurant. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant. However, the food was very disappointing and on the expensive side. We had nachos with guacamole as an appetizer. The nachos were tough, and the guacamole was very watery and salty. The dishes we received afterward were not tasty and tasted mainly of broth. A major drawback was that they don't serve tap water and you can only order spring water, which is not very welcoming. Furthermore, there were few vegetarian and vegan options. The restaurant has potential, but the food and the water policy were disappointing.

Once, but never again. We had made a reservation and forgot to mention that we had dogs with us. We asked for a different table so the waitresses wouldn't trip over them, but it was impossible, as everything was reserved by regulars. We were criticized. How could we expect this from them? I think it was the owner, either stressed out or having a bad day, but she showed absolutely no respect or decency towards the customers. We really felt like she was being ignored. After paying, the door didn't close properly; they slammed it shut without even a thank you or a good evening. Truly a disappointment!

We had a wonderful time. The Caiparinha was delicious. Plenty of cachaça, as it should be. The taco and wrap combo was truly delicious. Our son's nachos were plentiful, and the lobster, too, came with the extra jalapeños we requested. We also had a Mexican beer and a cheesecake. The crust was quite thick, but the cranberry flavor was delicious. The waitresses are quick and attentive. They can definitely make more money on upsells. And they're still using an outdated pocket computer. It looked like a gadget from a sci-fi movie.

I recently dined at this Mexican restaurant and I highly recommend it! The grilled meat was perfectly prepared: juicy, full of flavor, and with that authentic smoky touch you only get from a real grill. The chicken, tenderloin, and spare ribs on the mixed grill were truly delicious, but my dinner companions also found the sirloin and steak to be superb. The spices and marinades were perfectly balanced—spicy, but not overpowering. The atmosphere was cozy, and the service was friendly and attentive. We were asked several times if we wanted extra fries. Definitely a place to return to!

We can't agree with the negative reviews. We had a delicious meal there, and the service was very friendly. It was my son's birthday, and they even arranged fireworks in his ice cream. We had a fantastic evening!

We got a table inside and looked at the menu. First, we ordered drinks, then asked for an extra item. This was very difficult because it wasn't included with the drink... then we ordered food. Again, everything was very difficult if you wanted something different due to an allergy (even after explaining it). The food arrived quite quickly and looked great. After tasting it, the taste could have been better. Three small bowls of sides for 4 people was very little, in my opinion. Unfortunately, the request for drinks was only at the beginning; the staff ignored it for the rest of the evening (a broken business model, perhaps?). We all had dessert. Opinions were divided on this as well, and the quality was disappointing. All in all, a bit of a disappointment. (The place wasn't even half full during our visit.)

They have a house rule here: no tap water is served, even for a fee! It's policy to force customers to pay a mere €4 for a bottle of water. Otherwise, it's a simple restaurant with mediocre service.

This visit was a huge disappointment. It started with not serving a glass of tap water if you simply ordered an expensive glass of wine and a cocktail. When will restaurants actually provide this service without any scorn? Then your guests will return ;) Furthermore, the food was definitely not what we expected. They served lettuce on a piping hot plate with limp (watery?) guacamole that I don't think contained any avocado, and some kind of grated onion salad that was inedible. If, when you ask if everything was to your liking, you're honestly told that the lettuce isn't meant to be eaten, but to keep the side dishes "cool," and I should have asked next time if the side dishes could be served separately, then you really need a lesson in gastronomy. Sorry, but is that my job as a guest?! Once, but never again.

This is the Mexican restaurant of the Netherlands. I spoke to the chefs, everything is freshly made and you can taste it. Nice beer from Mexico, recommended!

June 30: nachos stuck to the plate, dishes seemed overly hot, otherwise not surprising or very tasty. Tables were cleaned well, tip: also wipe the chair backs with that cloth.

Welcomed by a friendly and calm waitress, very pleasant! You don't experience that very often. Food served quickly and was deliciously tasty, as you can expect from the Mexican.

It has deteriorated rapidly and the service is no longer so nice, which is a shame.

Food was fine, but unfortunately the service was terrible. Not thinking along and rude. Luckily we got another waitress who often understood her.

Starters (soup and chicken drumsticks) were reasonable. The tomato soup was the best dish of the evening, but the chicken drumsticks had a strange chili sauce around them. For the main course we had quesadilla and enchilada. The quesadilla had all kinds of strange vegetables (peas, celery, cauliflower) that are not Mexican at all. The guacamole that came with it tasted like it came from a jar. And the dish was not spicy or hot at all... Nice service, except for a somewhat older woman who brought the receipt and did not tell us where we could pay. Maybe that was the owner?

Food is okay but service is hard to find. You order a coffee with whipped cream and liqueurs and ask if the liqueurs can be served separately. They can. They forget to bring the whipped cream first and when you pay you have to pay for the coffee, whipped cream and liqueurs separately! So instead of 8.95 you suddenly pay 13.50. How bad. Not smart because we are/were regular guests and they could also forget about the tip.

Very bad food is not fresh. Food doesn't taste like anything. The waiter asks what you thought of the food and you answer honestly. Does the staff get angry? Indicate that it is our opinion. Never go here again. It was probably the owner and she can't stand the fact that her restaurant is nothing. The oranges were probably on offer because they put it on all dishes.

If there's one thing worse than the food served here, it's the management. After returning a dish, it was taken away without saying a word and ridiculed among the staff 1 meter behind us. No conversation was entered into, no questions asked, in fact: you were given the cold shoulder. No alternative was held or a kind word was spoken. NOTHING. When paying, this dish was on the bill, but after asking why, I was scolded. I'm perplexed. The food was bad but the character of the chef was even worse. If you want to eat bad food quickly and get vomited: go here!

We entered the restaurant and were immediately served in a disinterested manner. When we got the starters, the nachos and the chicken legs, the nachos were limp and without any flavor and the marinade of the chicken was sour and the meat around the bone was gray. When we arrived at the main courses we found a clump of hair in the food that was completely twisted through the burrito. Really incredibly disgusting. We were given the option to eat something else, but of course we declined. No sorry when we left, nothing. If I could have given 0 stars, I would have given 0 stars, but unfortunately this is not possible. What a terrible restaurant, DO NOT GO HERE!

Staff were friendly until a huge strand of hair was found in the food. Very unfortunate. The Mexican food was quite mediocre and was served in less than 5 minutes (so most likely heated up in the microwave). Not bad, but not tasty either. It's a shame that the customer is not taken into account and we were even asked if we still wanted to eat the plate with food (+ cluster of hairs)!? Unfortunately, price and quality are not in proportion. I recommend cycling for 2 minutes and having a bite to eat at another restaurant in the Midsland.

OK, the start was actually quite positive. Mexican atmosphere, maybe a little overkill, but the kids liked it. The menu includes the usual Mexican dishes, borrito, enchilada and taccos. The food came and it was so hot you couldn't even touch the plate. Oh, better hot than cold, because it will eventually work itself out. Quality was so-so, somewhat reminiscent of a microwave. It only became spooky at an advanced hour when the crockery and cutlery was sorted noisily in the dining room - a background noise similar to that of searching for parts in the Lego box. After asking whether it could be quieter or somewhere else, we were told that we could hear it quietly, it wouldn't be that bad. Well, there was still space around the corner and we would have liked to have finished eating in peace and drank the bottle of wine. Unfortunately, entertaining was no longer possible and comfort was already ruined because we had to constantly look into the chaotic separate room (photo). Conclusion: Not very comfortable, food not great and service rather bad, so definitely not again.

You must eat here during your holiday!

We decided to visit this Mexican restaurant to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday, but unfortunately the experience did not meet our expectations. The food was not as good as we expected and some dishes lacked the authentic flavor usually associated with Mexican cuisine. Additionally, the menu, which contained references in Spanish, contained spelling errors, which somewhat detracted from the authenticity and professionalism of the experience. The service was also not as attentive as it should have been, which made the evening less enjoyable for everyone. Overall, our visit fell short of what we expected for a special occasion. It's a shame because we were looking forward to a good experience.

Took a ride on the banana with the 6 of us. Great experience, lot of fun. You can change clothes at the booth, they have a toilet as well and you can leave your valuables there.

We got our food super quickly, the quality was good. I had a portion of spare ribs, 8 lousy bonkies for 22 euros. That was a bit of a shame

Very nice atmosphere and friendly service. The sirloin steak, taco (carne) and enchilada (pollo) were very tasty. Kudos for the salad with the steak! Fantastic cheesecake, panna cotta had a little too much sauce in proportion. The interior is top notch and there are delicious Belgian beers available on tap. Be sure to try the tequila menu!
