New Draver Restaurant in Oosterparkbuurt

I got cassava soup today for €15 and I am really disappointed. I live nearby and come here often, but this really let me down. The soup was incredibly watery and there was a thick, orange layer of oil floating on top, with tomato skins in it. Cassava soup is normally supposed to be a bit thicker. But if you are going to make it thinner anyway, at least make sure there is enough cassava in it. In my whole bowl, there were literally only three pieces of cassava. Otherwise, it was mainly chicken and salted meat. I can accept that there was no garnish like celery or parsley in it. But then at least make sure there is actually cassava in a cassava soup. This was basically just watery, greasy broth with meat. Very disappointing and a waste of my money. Sorry Draver, but y’all can do so much better than this. ☹️

34 euros one person - is this reasonable? One main course with rice, a glass of beer, and a portion of chicken feet. It was described as a beef and chicken combo, but there was very little of it. The beef was about two centimeters in size, only two pieces, and the chicken was also very scarce. I felt that I didn't get any meat, so they added a side dish. There were a total of five chicken feet. The beer was a large cup. They charged me 34 euros in total. I don't know if this priceis reasonable considering that it's in a peripheral area of a city that's not very central, like Amsterdam. Also, after I got home, I started having stomach pain, and my stomach felt very uncomfortable at night. Also, his menu doesn't list any prices. Please be aware of this. Make sure to ask in advance. Well, I wouldn't recommend you to come and eat here. My stomach is really hurting.

Unfortunately, we were not greeted very kindly upon entering. It took about 5 minutes for someone to come and say hello. When we asked for a menu, we were told that there wasn't one and that we had to look at the board at the counter. Furthermore, there were no prices listed there. We ordered curry chicken with rice and beef with rice. The curry chicken was fine in itself, but a bit bland. Unfortunately, the beef was still tough and didn't taste good. Additionally, the portions of meat/chicken were very small. The satay was also disappointing, and the portion was quite small. In the end, we had to pay no less than €54 for 1 portion of satay (3 skewers), 1 curry chicken with rice, 1 beef with rice, a Cola Zero, and a beer. For what we received, we found this to be a ridiculously high price. When we subsequently asked for the receipt, we were told that it was not possible to get one. We found that very strange as well. All in all, unfortunately, a disappointing experience. We won't be coming back a second time.

The whole thing looks a bit simple, but don't let that fool you. Today I got takeout from Café New Draver for the first time. Rice with pork and beans, and rice with masala eggplant with smoked chicken and smoked fish. The dishes look simple, but the taste was HAUTE CUISINE. It just doesn't get any better. The sambal (which isn't sambal, but not hot sauce either - it was actually a mildly spicy piccalilly) was also SUBLIME. The quantity of 2 portions was enough for 2 people. I often read in reviews that the lady behind the counter is a bit unfriendly, but that was TOP-NOTCH too. She was super friendly, super helpful, and very polite. It was around 6:30 PM, but I still took a blompap and a maize porridge for breakfast tomorrow and tasted them: SUPER, especially that blompap. The wait time was 15 minutes at most. I will stop by as soon as I am back in Amsterdam. To the people at New Draver: keep up the great cooking!

Food is really good. Real Surinamese home cooked food. The atmosphere and the overall look of the restaurant were less impressive. Service is good but not as professional I would like to have seen in a restaurant. The restaurant has real potential to be a real restaurant if this family-owned business stepped their game up. The only dish that really disappointed was the Fiadoe cake. Tasted nothing like the real deal.

I got takeout here last Saturday (noodles with chicken). It was definitely tasty and well-seasoned!

Ended up here purely in search of bakkeljauw, preferably on a bun. Unfortunately, the bakkeljauw was only suitable for a meal. So I ordered a bami bakkeljauw. A bowl of bakkeljauw wasn't available either... weird. I definitely feel a bit ripped off, considering the price... I've learned not to talk about money, so I'll leave that out. The food was worth it, though, but the ratio of the bakkeljauw to the bami was definitely "off". The minimal garnish was supposed to complete the meal... but I asked for bakkeljauw with bami, and those were good. So the food is good. I will definitely come back to get a full meal, because the kitchen is spot on. First time. But you can expect that from Draver... until next time!

The food is super tasty. You get a lot of food for your money. Seating is limited, though, because the place is quite small inside. Despite that, it was very cozy.

The Draver is truly an iconic restaurant. Even when I lived in Amsterdam more than 22 years ago, it was the place where you could go for a good Surinamese creole meal. This hasn't changed. What I didn't know is that they als have the absolute best Maizena cookies. Believe me, these are the first cookies I buy when I get to Amsterdam because they are gluten free and super delicious. I consider myself an expert😊. I still have a few on my desk that I randomly got at a toko but I never finished them because the taste is not there. The maizena cookies from the Draver, I finished 2 packets before I even got home and then I got back to buy more. When it comes to the food, you can't go wrong with any type of moksalesie. The people are friendly, atmosphere is super chill, it is one of the places I definitely recommend. Enjoy!

A bit of a community center feel, pleasant and cozy, lovely people at the takeaway and had a nice conversation. Food very tasty (had vegetarian roti with vegetables and egg), but there were few veggie options. Would go back again! ✨✨

I'm sad to write this review. After the previous fiascos of the past 8/9 years, I thought I'd give New Draver another chance. Because the food and service were terrible. Especially the rude people who helped customers. Fortunately, that wasn't always the case. To be fair, it was. But 8 out of 10 times, it was. I'd heard their food was a bit better, but it looked different...okay, let me go. I told the young man at the counter that I wanted to eat there and if I could sit down, he'd ask. I was told I had to place my order first and then I could sit down. While other customers who came after me could sit down immediately, even after they asked the same question. The food was downright unappetizing. The satay sauce, or peanut sauce, was sour and tasted like a very sick Wijko Satay Sauce in mourning. Nothing Surinamese about that sauce. My food was tasteless. It's been a long time since their food was on point. Unfortunately, they're still missing the mark. And I think it's a shame, because the location is amazing and it's a nice bar restaurant. Do something about your customer service. Because I'm not the only one talking about it. It's soooo much better than before, but it could definitely be better. Before I decided to write this review, I asked about 28 people in my area for their opinion of New Draver. Unfortunately, the opinions weren't divided, and they all talked about the taste and quality of the food, as well as the customer service. They also agreed that it's been worse (customer service), but that it's still bad. I really wish you well, but I'll be honest in my reviews.

Definitely recommended for delicious Surinamese food

The four of us had a fabulous dinner at New Draver last night. This is such a delightful little place to spend a few hours and the food is delicious. Chicken and rice, anyone? Head on over. Moksi Alesi with beef and smoked chicken. Nasi and roast chicken. Roti with all the trimmings and the best potatoes ever.

On my way home, I popped in. I ordered the nasi chicken from the daily menu with a Fernandes. The price was €20.50, which I thought was a bit high for what I got. The nasi was pretty standard and not particularly flavorful. The price-quality ratio felt out of balance to me.

My first time having Surinamese food and it was so delicious!! I got the fried rice with roast chicken and it is one of the most tender and flavorful roast chicken I’ve ever had. Overall the dish is very savory with a slightly spice to it. The green beans and pickled onions add a great texture and freshness. My only complaint is I wish there was more than just one piece of plantain because it was so tasty!

Last Saturday, we got two bami satay from this Surinamese restaurant. We were really looking forward to it, but once we got home, we were immediately disappointed. The chicken had a strange taste, as if it was close to its expiration date. The satay sauce was good, but very sparse. The bami itself tasted mostly of broth and lacked any flavor. You'd expect a daily special to include some vegetables, but they were completely missing. Unfortunately, this was a one-time experience for us. There are plenty of better options nearby. We won't be returning.

They have been around for years, but their reach is small, they would be better off going online to increase their reach, I don't understand why they don't start doing that

Best Surinamese restaurant in Amsterdam! Don't be put off by the coffee shop look and interior. If you really want authentic Surinamese food, you've come to the right place. There's no menu; they make fresh Surinamese dishes every day. The owner and staff are super friendly. They talk passionately about their homemade dishes. What if you don't want to eat your standard Roti or Nasi, but rather dishes that aren't typically on the Surinamese menu? You should definitely eat here. They even have homemade Surinamese TikiTiki cognac. Everything, absolutely everything, was excellent! After a night at Carre, we ended up at New Draver. Because we wanted to eat authentic Surinamese food. And we certainly got it. Pom, pastei, chicken, long beans, and rice. With a glass of ginger ale, of course. The food was so delicious. We'll definitely go back when we're in Amsterdam. There were so many delicious dishes on the menu.

One of the best rotis I’ve ever had in my life, matched with some amazing Surinamese beer. If I lived closer they would see me every day!

It's always a real treat when I eat at De Draver. While most people go to a McDonald's or KFC, I'm always happy to go to De Draver. And every time, my moksi alesi, fried fish, antroewa, tajer leaf, or any other dish is a true delight. My favorite dishes there are moksi alesi and fried fish with tajer leaf. The Kesser family are truly great people. They always have a pleasant time chatting with genuine Surinamese people. My Dutch wife now goes without me and enjoys his meal with his son. De New Draver is highly recommended if you want to try or eat authentic old-school Surinamese soul food.

The person at the counter was so sweet and she translated the whole menu to me. It was cozy and quick with decent portions for takeaway. The sit in side of the restaurant also is cute and homey. I got the zuurkool met gerookte kip and it warmed my soul and filled me up on a grey Dutch evening. Thank you!!

Once, but never again! Ordered a takeout moksi, which had almost no meat left over, and was soaking wet with fish sauce. Extremely bad taste and more expensive than any moksi in the area! Beware: when the chef receives an order, he first leaves the kitchen to check who he's preparing it for. After one bite, everything ends up in the trash!

I ordered a nasi chicken with vegetables and received it in a container without a lid and everything in 1 container. You try to be satisfied and only later can you decide if it was worth it... no... rice which is not really what I would call good and fresh and the container has little content because everything is put in an open cardboard container... it cost a lot and unfortunately while I can taste the flavor and spices, when you pick it up you expect a closed container and gezheiden in vegetables and meat and rice... otherwise IQ it is a one-pot meal... honestly disappointed, but a sweet lady who took the order who did not know yet and asked if that is so or if you are supposed to give them separately yes... because you prepare the vegetables separately and the meat too... so for 16.50... in a container I think it is not worth it and especially if the rice is still so thick and white so it has risen too long or I chose the wrong rice because I grew up with nasi and this could be better... and there is no price menu or anything... could be better. Menu rice and the containers the flavor is in it unfortunately I did not like the rice and the contents in division.

A truly authentic Surinamese-Creole cuisine. And it tastes absolutely delicious! The bami could use a few more vegetables. And a tip is to supplement the moksi meti with, for example, sausage, red meat, and roasted pork bacon. Experimenting is allowed. But as mentioned, everything tasted fantastic!

Classic Surinamese restaurant. The food is fresh and well-prepared. They're generous with their servings too 😁 The takeaway section is separate from the bar and restaurant, so you can relax there. It's a nice place. It's a shame the veggie bami doesn't have eggs or tofu, etc.

It was my first time there, so I was curious. I chose the peanut soup with rice. It was very flavorful and quite filling. Chicken, salted meat, and tom-tom. I also took a piece of Viado with me. Everything was excellent, very tasty.

The best Surinamese restaurant I know! The roti is divine, the bami is unbeatable; everything is delicious, really. The service is also friendly. I came especially from Castricum for new Draver.

I recently got a Dawet ice cream, which was absolutely delicious. It cost €3, which I don't think is too expensive for something like that. You get it in a bag, and if you ask them to open it for you so you can eat it right away, they will. I'll definitely be back.

Nasi en bami erg bleek en smaakloos. Gebakken vis en de kip waren lekker! Kom niet meer terug. Ook de drankjes gember en zuurwater waren meer suiker en essence. Jammer hoor, vroeger kom je hier echt lekker eten.

When in Amsterdam you have to have Surinamese food. We had roti here, and it was incredibly flavourful, authentic, and delicious. Beyond the great taste, the service was excellent; the staff were so friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was also perfect, really adding to the whole dining experience. If you're looking for delicious Surinamese food with friendly service and a great vibe, this is definitely the place to go!

I still like the food. Only the bami could use some vegetables. At home I make some vegetables & peanut sauce. Otherwise it is so bare, it has become more expensive. Only the containers are filled well. The Surinamese cookies are really recommended.

Employee made us pay 80€, while we had eaten and drank for 63€. When we asked for the receipt, it first said 63€ but that was crossed out, with 80€ next to it. When we recalculated it was clearly not right, the 80€ just came out of nowhere. In addition, I got sick from the food at night.

Real Surinaamse homemade food restaurant. It's so good that all the Surinaamse people I know come here! It's maybe a bit pricier. But that's because it's made with love and it's so worth it! Here is no place like this! Strongly recommend it here! Staff is also very friendly and the menu is mostly different everyday! Unfortunately no pictures of the delicious food because I always it so fast! But I'll try to update next time I'll get my food there and do remember it.

I normally get food here once a week and always leave a tip, but tonight I was treated so rudely by the dark, heavy lady with glasses who stood behind the bar that I will never come back here. Ruth is rude, she is super rude and doesn't know how to deal with customers. You will never see me again and I advise everyone to avoid New Trotter until they have new staff who treat their (regular) customers who spend a lot of money there with respect. Very disappointed.

The Surinamese cuisine is very diverse. Hindustani, Javanese, Chinese, you name it. We always go to The New Draver for delicious Creole-Surinamese food. Today we ate ocher soup and sopropo with smoked chicken pieces. Delicious, reasonable price. Brought a few pieces of bojo and fiadoe for coffee at home. Also tasty, but we thought it was pricey.

I passed it a few times before I decided to give it a try. The reviews were mostly positive. Well, after eating fast food and food on the go while traveling, this was exactly what I needed. A home cooked meal!! I looked up the country, as I wasn't familiar. The pictures all looked good. And it was! Small local, mom and pop restaurant serving delicious food. The young lady there helped me with the menu and I ended up getting a delicious stewed BBQ pork dish, white rice, shredded green beans and sweet plantains! I'm incredibly satisfied. 😋

Normally good, but now I had to wait 45 minutes and there was no sauce or egg with the roti, making it very dry and tasteless. Too bad it's changed, won't be back

Delicious S'Name cuisine and neat...

For authentic Surinamese food this is the restaurant to go to. Daily menu with original creo food. The rice, chicken, salted meat and Amsoi is great. Cake as a dessert. Can’t go wrong here.

Amazing food! We went back multiple times here while on vacation – it’s that good. The portions are generous, the food quality is great, and it’s good value. They also might have the best ginger beer on the planet – super fresh with a great bite to it. Highly HIGHLY recommend for awesome Surinamese food in Amsterdam!

Ate Surinamese food for the first time here and loved it. For sure coming back, next time I’m in Amsterdam. New Draver seems to be a family business with a very inviting ambience. A lot of the clients seem to come regularly and the owner was very friendly. His daughter took her time to translate the menu for me amd suggest her favorites. I was then served very very delicious food.

Ik ben maar een domme Hollander, maar de nasi kip is hier heel erg goed. Ik weet ook geen andere plek in Amsterdam waar je echt lekker en authentiek Surinaams kunt eten. Alleen, de volgende keer, iets meer zuur erbij graag.

Hou van de ambiance. Is een sfeer die mij gevoel geeft weer even in Suriname te zijn. En das lekker... Eten was overigens heerlijk. Vroeg om Surinaamse groente die niet op 't menu stond, en dat was in huis. Lekker snelle bediening ook. Alles top!

Ik had zo'n honger, had wel 2 porties opgekund... Mijn buurman vond de porties erg klein... Ik zat al uren met een rammelende maag...
