We went here for mussels, and the afternoon actually started off very well. The service was friendly and efficient. First, we enjoyed an aperitif with a snack, and then we both ordered mussels natural. It was politely mentioned beforehand that there were no jumbo mussels left and that the mussels were a bit smaller. No problem at all for us: they were indeed small, but tasty and flavorful. Because it was all-you-can-eat, my friend ordered a second portion afterwards. Upon opening the pot, I immediately smelled a very strong garlic odor. Very strange, because we had ordered mussels natural. Moreover, that second pot suddenly contained much larger mussels than our first portions. My friend did eat them, but with much less enjoyment, because the garlic really overpowered everything. When paying the bill, I asked why the first portion was natural and the second suddenly had so much garlic. The answer surprised us even more: “The cook was probably on break and the others in the kitchen took over.” Sorry, but we find that a strange explanation. A second portion of the same dish should simply be the same dish, regardless of who is in the kitchen at the time. And aside from taste preferences: what if someone has an allergy or intolerance to an ingredient that is simply added without question? It is a shame, because up until that second portion, we were actually very satisfied. Good service, a pleasant start, and tasty first mussels, but due to this strange outcome, a less positive impression lingered.

Cozy restaurant in the heart of Sluis. Super friendly staff and we all had a delicious meal. The schnitzel was big and tasty! The ribs and the ham were also a hit.

Asking 6.90 for a cornet but getting it in a Leffe glass... An alcohol-free mojito for 9.50 euros... Okay, it costs money, not a problem if it's homemade... But no, you get a bottle of mojito that you can buy at Delhaize for 2.20 and a glass with ice... I'm happy to pay a higher price for something, but then it has to be finished...

Tasty mussels and fries! Friendly service. I love coming here. People who are indignant about small mussels or a fries supplement; this is mentioned in advance by the staff themselves. So you are not faced with a fait accompli.

It was perfectly fine, though not exceptional. Cheese croquettes and a mushroom toast for a meal. A glass of Sancerre, though I would have liked a bit more given the price. A good selection of meat and fish. Plenty of seating both inside and outside. Reasonable wait time.

I had ordered and said I wanted sangria and then mussels; now, after waiting for half an hour, I am finally getting my mussels. While I was telling the waiter that I hadn't received my sangria yet, I saw someone coming towards me with one. I just sent it back (I was satisfied with my decision when I saw how small it was and would have to pay €11 for it) and asked for a glass of wine. The menu also states that all mussel dishes are unlimited with bread (a small roll)... and when clearing the table, they don't ask if you had enough, only if you enjoyed it, and the table is cleared. This is now the second time in two years that it isn't what they promise, so it is definitely not worth repeating.

Very disappointing experience. I ordered a sangria, but it seemed to be topped up with water rather than wine. The so-called hand-cut pieces of fruit were so scarce that you almost had to look for them with a magnifying glass. Next came the homemade shrimp croquettes, for which they shamelessly charge over €21. If this was homemade, I wonder how. Honestly, I have eaten much tastier shrimp croquettes at a chip shop, where they just come straight from the freezer. The salad that came with it was clearly from a bag: dry, without dressing or any sauce. The bread consisted of two dry white slices that looked like they came straight out of a plastic package. For this price, you surely expect at least some care and quality. In short: far too expensive for what you get. The price-quality ratio is completely lacking. Absolutely no second visit for us. There are plenty of restaurants where you can eat well and with proper care for the same money.

I've known the Balmoral for over 20 years and have been there many times. I've always ordered the all-you-can-eat mussels with fries (for an extra charge). To be honest, I've never been disappointed, whether by the staff, the cleanliness of the place, or the food. We're in the Netherlands, so the staff don't necessarily speak or understand French. It's best to learn a few words in Dutch (hello, please, thank you), because, as in Flanders, it's the bare minimum for a warm welcome, and it's easy with Google Translate. Now, there are a few little habits and customs that can be annoying, but that's common on the coast or in tourist areas: The service is sometimes slow (it's not always the case). When the bill arrives, carefully check what you've been charged: sometimes (often) there are mistakes... Also, be aware: if you order a set menu and then order something other than what's included, it will be charged in addition to the menu price (this is legal, but not always explained or understood due to the language barrier). Finally, and this isn't always obvious, businesses in Sluis make a year's worth of revenue in just four months, so even the smallest extra is charged. Nevertheless, the Balmoral offers decent value for money, with all-you-can-eat mussels for €25. But with the extras (and this is where they make the most money, so pay close attention), the bill easily climbs to €50 or €65 per person.

Mussels and fries preceded by garlic scampi, for dessert 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 2 large bottles of water, a child's spaghetti, a diet cola, apple juice, a tea and a latte, and all that for 128.50 euros… there are three of us. Service cannot be improved.

Never again. The waiter who took our order understands almost no Dutch. He took my order and then left. He didn't ask my boyfriend if he was supposed to eat too. I had ordered a starter and a main course, and the gentleman assumed it was for both of us. When I called him over to order food for my boyfriend as well, he immediately started saying that the food would arrive in fifteen minutes because I was still having my aperitif. After explaining myself three times, he finally understood that it was to place another order. What happened afterwards was a bridge too far; he brought my starter along with the main course. By the time my mushroom toast was finished, my main course, and especially the fries, were cold.

Tourist trap! All-you-can-eat mussels, but you have to pay extra for everything: fries, mayonnaise, and then they even say they are small mussels... sorry, no jumbo mussels today...

Severely disappointed. Ordered mussels with fries. Still got a nice 2 stars because the fries were tasty. Personally, I don't mind that the mussels were small. But a quarter of the mussels were still closed and many were only slightly open. We sent them back to the kitchen and they were supposedly put back on the stove, but it was the same again. And for coming straight off the stove, they weren't any warmer than the first time, so we suspect they sat there for a bit with just the lid on. We asked for mussels 'natural' and immediately tasted the garlic. When the waiter came, I said that this wasn't natural, and he claimed that they always do it that way there. That isn't true, because we ate there last year and they were tasty then. Either they are new owners, a new cook, or the cook can't cook anymore 🤷‍♀️. The staff was very friendly though.

Food is top-notch but drinks are scarce, too little wine and way too expensive, sangria too small and too expensive. Drinks are better at Café Joppie, there you at least get real sangria.

Expensive for what you get! Never eaten mussels that small, and you have to pay extra for the fries. A lot of money for the beef croquettes, a few lettuce leaves, and a cucumber on the side without dressing. You ask for an extra bowl of fries and it was a small bowl, mind you. Having to pay 7.90 for fries that should actually be included in the price. Sad place!

Never ever Balmoral in Sluis - I made a worst experience with this restaurant / Tea room in Sluis. The staff was entire under pressure ! Highly stressed and very unfriendly. 3 different waiters did not know the WLAN password. One young female waiter did not even understood , what I was asking her. Quality of the food is low - prices are high. Even there was a lot of guests - mainly old tourists - this place is a trap . They thought that this is a high level place - but this is wrong. There are many other restaurants - also opposite from Balmoral - with good service and food Try to go there - and enjoy. So never ever Balmoral in Sluis.

I’ve been going there for mussels for years, but unfortunately, it’s not like it used to be... Always small portions; all-you-can-eat is naturally a selling point for many, but when you get the bill, it’s more expensive than anywhere else!! You also have to pay for your fries separately (that’s the catch). Things always have to go fast there too; no time to enjoy a leisurely aperitif, or they’re already there with the food immediately! It is nice by the water, though, but it’s a shame that cars are allowed to drive through!

Heated terrace, friendly service, and delicious all-you-can-eat mussels. Even when they are on a set menu. Beautiful view of the water from the terrace. The restaurant is located close to the city center car parks.

I ordered shrimp croquettes with bread; this was a small, pre-baked white roll that costs at most 0.25 cents at Aldi, and shrimp croquettes that were still cold on the inside. The salad was tasteless and consisted of some lettuce and one piece of tomato. My friend received frozen fries that were not properly fried and beef stew, which was supposed to be homemade but looked like a portion of cat food. All this for the incredibly high price of 62 euros. Scandalous, you will NEVER see us here again.

If you want to eat unlimited mussels, this is the place! Beautiful, delicate mussels, cooked in a lightly peppered garlic broth. And unlimited!!! Nice service, they make sangria the way it should be. The Coupe Bresilienne and the cappuccino are also highly recommended 😊 All in all, a lovely experience.

Very expensive for what it is. Together with my partner and mother-in-law, we ordered pancakes. They "enjoyed" a pancake with (barely any) brown sugar, while I had one with whipped cream and strawberries. The pancakes were greasy and tasteless; the strawberries were unripe and tasteless. It was a huge disappointment, and this isn't the first time for us. It was their last chance... a pity.

We both ate a croque... A warmed-up toast completely soft, dry, lukewarm, and not crispy at all! A lettuce leaf, a few slices of cucumber, no dressing, and 1/4 tomato! A warm Fanta, not chilled at all. Mighty, shining sun present... without any communication, the parasols opened and bye-bye sun! The ketchup bottle with caked-on, dried-up ketchup residue on the tube! Apparently not used to the crowds because you weren't allowed to ask anything because... busy, busy, busy... well, tourism, eh! Asked for water for the dog, no reaction! They will never see me, us, again!

Not good for the high prices. Nothing is freshly prepared. All the ingredients came from the freezer. The food lacked flavor and seasoning. Half-cooked oven fries were served as a side dish. The wrong drink was delivered twice.

I'll start with the positives: the service is fine and it's in the heart of Sluis. Food: the all-you-can-eat mussels were quite tasteless but also under-seasoned. The accompanying mussel sauce resembled a combination of sweet mayonnaise with a minuscule spoonful of whole grain mustard added, making it completely unsuitable for the mussels. The fries, with a supplement of €3.95, were rock hard and, of course, not fresh. The pasta vongole had scampi, vongole, and mussels. In short, way too expensive for what it is, and we will never go back.

Terrible food, really NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL! The mussels may be small, but these mussels are simply scrap mussels. That are unsellable anywhere else. The taste was terrible, and on top of that, you have to pay extra for your fries. The waiters & waitresses were not friendly at all. Walk right past it, there are MUCH better restaurants in Sluis!

We weren't hungry, so we ordered fish soup. A very generous portion. We thought we'd gotten a good deal. Of course, the bill brought disappointment. Like an idiot, I paid before checking the bill. We'd been served bouillabaisse. Not what we'd ordered. And wouldn't you know it, the owner wasn't there. In short, total confusion and the unpleasant feeling of having been ripped off.

So...where to begin? Reception: 15 minutes from the border, no effort whatsoever to speak French, despite my attempts to speak Dutch. Food: Chef's steak tartare with fries and mayo. Approximately 120 grams of steak tartare. Poor quality frozen fries. Two lettuce leaves, three pickles, ten small white onions, and capers...not even an egg. And the mayo, charged at €1.50, not even homemade. Almost the price of a jar! And to top it off, a Cornet beer at €6.95...that's the price of a four-bottle pack at the supermarket. All this for the astronomical sum of €34.40. Outrageous! Run away!

Normally you get fries with the main menu, but not here, you have to pay for that. I had mussels (unlimited) but when the pan was empty they didn't ask if I wanted more, expensive food so I won't be repeating it.

Beautiful restaurant. We arrived with our stroller and almost 2-year-old son, and nothing was too much trouble. They asked if we wanted to sit right next to the play area, and a high chair was immediately brought to us. I've never seen such a child-friendly restaurant. We were also immediately offered an extra plate and special children's cutlery. We had schintzel and fish stew. Besides being delicious, the portions were also very generous. Highly recommended. And the waiters were very friendly.

I ordered mussels, which were incredibly small and inedible. I would have been embarrassed to serve them this! The prices on the menu don't match the bill. It's worth skipping this place.

We were well received, two adults with two young children, and we spoke a little Dutch. The servers were very attentive and friendly throughout the service. We were very warm on the terrace thanks to the multiple heaters, and our large dog even had a bowl of water! We ate very well despite our surprise at the extra charge for fries, which were not included with the all-you-can-eat mussels, but we are still very surprised to have been charged €200!!! Note that smoking is allowed, which is very annoying. Parking is available in the nearby public parking lot for €5 per day.

We went there for dinner this afternoon, and it was a real disappointment. The steak was tough, the fries were frozen, and my wife had a queen's snack that tasted very much like a flower. I'll never go back.

My advice is to pass this place by. IT'S ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!!!! €22.50 for a half-liter of house wine that tastes like nothing. Steak tartare (€22.95) with dried-out fries, and the tartare resembled a prepared meal from Aldi, completely flavorless. (Prepared meal from Aldi is much better.) The lukewarm goat cheese (€25.95) with a crusty pastry turned out to be a tasteless, crumbled goat cheese with runny honey on a piece of toast from a Dutch gas station. When the waiter at the table next to us asked if it was good, they politely replied that their food was far too expensive and tasteless. I'll never set foot in here again. Next time, I'll read the reviews first; they're 100% accurate. €1.60 for a jar of bad mayonnaise from a dirt-cheap brand. €4 for a small portion of dried-out fries, probably reheated several times in the fryer. Far too expensive for this junk.

A gin and tonic on the patio for €17.95! It should definitely be served with a touch of luxury and some salty snacks and olives. This time, it was a standard glass with a few cucumber slices. Definitely not worth the price, not recommended.

It was super busy! The staff was friendly, but the food wasn't that great... the stew had a strange texture and flavor (and the pot was tiny!). You definitely shouldn't be a big eater! The shrimp croquettes could have been fried a bit more... the inside was pure mush, and once you put it in your mouth, you could chew on it for 10 minutes. The flavor wasn't great either... we hadn't even sat down before the food was already there! I'd rather wait 15 or 20 minutes and have the food be good than have everything rushed and not good! The mayonnaise costs €1.50!

The vanilla milkshake is clearly made with real vanilla pods. It's full of flavor and has a perfect finish, just like a real milkshake should. It's served perfectly frothy in a giant glass, perfect for enjoying on warm summer days. For less than €10, you won't find a better one in Sluis and the surrounding area. I highly recommend it!

We ate here the day before yesterday and found the price-quality ratio very uneven. The sole was tasty (but very small), and the pork tenderloin was also tiny. The fries were served in a stainless steel bowl, the mayonnaise in a small container with a disposable spoon, and the promised salad consisted of a few lettuce leaves with a slice of tomato. The service was friendly and polite. The tables were very close together to accommodate as many guests as possible. There was absolutely no privacy.

Just ate mussels. When we ordered, we were told they were serving medium sized mussels; we've never seen such small mussels. 24.95 euros, plus another 4 euros for a portion of fries and 1.60 euros for a small pot of mayonnaise. It's truly outrageous how expensive this stuff is.

The mussels were so small, you wouldn't find them in a supermarket! They were selling pure waste mussels, which cost them less than 2 euros a kilo. On top of that, you pay extra for a portion of frozen fries that tasteless. We got 1 bowl for 3 people (at 4 euros per person). When we asked for more, we should have paid another 4 euros per small bowl, because according to the waiter, this was more than enough for 3 people. Which was told to us in an arrogant way. It was unpleasant to sit there because it was far too stressful and everything was actually thrown on the table. The prices on the receipt also turned out to be more expensive than on the menu. Expensive to drink as well. To end, I would say an unpleasant experience all in all. They will certainly not see us again!!! Here they clearly still take advantage of the corona period to drain people and serve as little as possible and of very poor quality to fill the till! Regards,

OVERRATED! CHOOSE ANOTHER BUSINESS! A long time ago, this place was still good, but yesterday I finally went in again, and this was clearly the last time! 4.20 for a coke is already more than the price in a historic city, and 7.95 for a mini glass of wine (3 sips and it was gone) is a bit much. Since it's the start of mussel season, we wanted to give it a try, but oh, how disappointed we were! Mussels were priced at 24.95 (like many places in Sluis at the moment), so we ordered two mussels. The mussels themselves were fresh and Super (the smallest size), but the preparation was awful! Bland, a bit of leek, 1 ring of onion, and really not tasty. My husband's pot contained several ICE COLD mussels 🤔. He left 3/4 of his pot because he really didn't like them! In the Philippines or at home, he'll devour at least 2kg! Then you pay an extra 4 euros for very mediocre fries and another 1.5 euros for a small jar of sweet mayo with a wooden spoon in a plastic container. We mentioned this, and they tried to offer us a house dessert, but we declined. We've never left so many mussels because the preparation was subpar. Choose the Philippines instead of Sluis for mussels! We eat out a lot, and this was by far one of the worst places in recent years!! I know I should take the reviews with a grain of salt, but I wish I'd read them first.

Large establishment that immediately stands out when you walk into the city centre. We were able to sit down at a table right away and were served in a friendly manner. There was no rush: we were given plenty of time to look at what we wanted to eat. The waiting time for the food was fine, although I have to say that we only ordered around 7:30 pm, so it was perhaps a little less busy. Our drink was nice and fresh and the food was okay – not spectacular, but certainly okay. After dinner we were offered the dessert menu, but they didn’t look at us strangely when we didn’t order anything else – that was nice. The establishment closes at 9 pm and around 8:50 pm we were still sitting on the terrace with two other tables, so it wasn’t really busy anymore. All in all, we had a great meal, but next time I’ll probably try another establishment, because there are still plenty of nice alternatives in the area.

I paid €15.50 for a croque monsieur, but got 2 home-made toasties! The ones from the football canteen were even better. As for the lunch menu, stay away from here!

Friendly and especially fast service, despite it being very busy. Mussels were on the small side, but well prepared. Large bowl of fries, fresh mussel sauce. Simply delicious food. When our first bowl of mussels was finished, they came to ask if we wanted another bowl (the "a volonté" was really not a lie). Only the tables are quite close together. Sometimes you had to work together with the people behind or in front of you to get to your chair :D There was enough space on the sides, so that you don't end up with your elbows in the neighbor's plate.. Mussels too small, super small. Not much taste to the mussels. Asked for house wine of 6.95 and were charged a chardonnay of 7.95 euros. If the wine had been good or there had been a lot in the glass, it would have been a different story, but no. Food was below average and certainly for the price you pay. Would not immediately recommend this restaurant.

For anyone who is hesitating to eat budget-friendly mussels here: don't. 'Mussels all you can eat for 24.95 euros' is a trick to attract customers. This is how you pay without knowing: 1) almost 4 euros per person (!) for a portion of fries; 2) 1.5 euros for mayonnaise; 3) almost 30 euros instead of 24.95 euros for mussels in a different way than 'mussels natural'. Two positive points: 1) The man who served us was very friendly and came to ask us enough if everything was to our liking. We really appreciated that. Thanks! 2) The (mini) mussels were tasty (but not worth the price).

I ate shrimp croquettes, didn't say anything to the staff. Didn't want to harass anyone. I just wonder if any of the staff has ever eaten shrimp croquettes. I eat shrimp croquettes in restaurants very often but have never eaten such a bad one. They were tasteless, flat, soggy ...... inedible in fact. Too bad.

Went on Thursday, very friendly staff, mussels were a volonté and we unanimously thought they were the best mussels we had ever eaten, they were on the small side but this was said in advance. We didn't have to wait long and waiters regularly came to ask if everything was okay. Definitely recommended!

Noisy, staff pay more attention to each other and do not pay attention to the guests and the prices are antisocially high. The waiter would come back after ordering coffee to take food order (because within 5 milliseconds he was already at the table to take the order) but never seen again. Thank goodness, because a good 15 euros for a ham/cheese sandwich is just laughable. And oh yes, the cappuccino is not even made from beans but from a bag.

Canteen food at good restaurant prices... The only positive point is the children's area.
