Review of Rijks – Vegetarian Tasting Menu (Tuin | Garden) Walking into Rijks, you immediately sense that this isn’t a “typical museum restaurant.” It’s refined without being intimidating, and the service sets the tone for what turns out to be a remarkable dining journey. For my first-ever vegetarian tasting menu — and at a Michelin-starred restaurant — I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Courses & Impressions... Tomaat (Tomato, Strawberry, Honey, Basil) A surprising opener that danced between savory and sweet. The brightness of tomato lifted by basil, with strawberry and honey adding both freshness and depth, instantly set the stage for how imaginative this menu would be. Fruits de Terre (Amazake, Shio Koji, Poppy Seed Tahini) Earthy, nutty, and umami all at once. The amazake and shio koji provided a subtle fermentation complexity, while the tahini grounded the dish. A fascinating “soil-meets-ferment” plate that showed just how far vegetables can go in flavor expression. Tuinboon (Broad Bean, Sea Lavender, Pistachio, Lemon Verbena) This plate was a revelation in texture — the creaminess of the beans, the gentle crunch of pistachio, and an herbal lift from lemon verbena. It tasted like a garden in peak summer, delicate but assertive. Pom Pom Blanc (Lion’s Mane, Celeriac Bordelaise, Hollandaise, Curry Leaf Oil) Lion’s mane mushrooms are often praised for their “meaty” bite, and here they were elevated with a Bordelaise richness and the silkiness of hollandaise. The curry leaf oil gave it a subtle aromatic twist. A dish that blurs the line between plant-based and classic French fine dining. Millefeuille of Beetroot... The star of the menu! Even though it was an add-on, this was a piece of edible art. Beetroot layered like pastry, bringing both visual drama and earthy sweetness. Worth the indulgence. Glazed BBQ Tempeh (Oatmeal, Zucchini, Ajipanca) Smoky, hearty, and comforting, this was perhaps the most surprising course. Tempeh, often dismissed as “hippie food,” was transformed into something gourmet. The Peruvian ajipanca pepper added depth without overpowering. Bijenwas (Beeswax, Honey, Elderflower, Black Fruits) A poetic finish — floral, fruity, and lightly sweet. The beeswax brought an almost ethereal texture, while elderflower and black fruits tied it together like the closing note of a symphony. Overall Experience... This menu was one of the best gastronomic journeys of my life. Every dish was layered, thoughtful, and elegant... not once did it feel like a compromise for being a vegetarian meal. Instead, it showcased the creativity and depth that vegetables can offer when handled with care. Rijks isn’t just a place to eat; it’s an education in flavour, a conversation with Dutch soil, and a reminder that vegetables can stand proudly at the center of haute cuisine. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unforgettable, and worth returning to Amsterdam for!!!

We visited this Michelin star restaurant and left extremely disappointed. The food portions were shockingly small, often no more than two bites per plate, and the overall variety of dishes was very limited. For the high price point, the value simply was not there. We had been looking forward to this experience all day, but ended up feeling full only from the bread. On the positive side, the wine list was impressive and fairly priced, but it was not enough to balance the rest of the experience. Charging for water service at such a high-end restaurant also felt unreasonable. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant, especially if you arrive hungry.

It was another absolute culinary highlight evening at Rijks by JorisBijdendijk. The welcome from Robin Toen immediately put me at ease, and that feeling lasted throughout the evening. Chef Friso van Amerongen and his team created a top-class vegetarian menu with “Garden.” Once again, I experienced brilliant flavor combinations that I had never encountered before. This was accompanied by great non-alcoholic drinks, and the service at Rijks is always more than sensational. And when Friso handed me a loaf of bread from Wils bakery cafe, I floated back to the hotel in complete bliss. What a wonderful evening of indulgence.

Fabulous lunch on a Sunday afternoon at Rijks. We had the lunch set menu + wine pairing and some additional dishes. The wine pairing perfect with the food. The dishes were beautifully presented, well thought through and balanced. The sweetbreads were absolutely delicious with a South African Syrah as a pairing. The staff are attentive and the overall service excellent. kudos to the kitchen.

Unfortunately, the dining experience at RIJKS® really fell short. The food itself was fine—nothing particularly memorable, but nothing terrible either. The real issue was the service. Water glasses sat empty, dirty dishes lingered on the table, and we waited over 20 minutes between courses with no explanation or check-in. For a restaurant of this caliber, the lack of attention and hospitality was disappointing. Definitely wouldn’t return.

Beetroot was great, langoustine was good, lionsmane was drowned in sauce. The other dishes and service were far from what you'd expect from one Michelin star. The server completely forgot our appetizers. The pacing was non-existent; if you can't do an equal job with a la carte then don't offer it. The sommelier was the only exception - she actually chatted with us and noticed that we were waiting to order and pay, despite us not even ordering any alcohol.

We dined here on Boxing Day 2019. And to our dismay, it was a huge disappointment. It all started with the decor. There were absolutely no decorations or Christmas references. Not even a Christmas branch or anything like that in the restaurant. We started the evening with a glass of red wine. The woman pouring the wine was of an age that still wets the bed, and the amount she poured was from a pharmacist. It was extremely embarrassing considering the price of 14 euros for a glass of wine. After we complained to a higher-ranking staff member, the matter was amply rectified. The composition of the Christmas menu was truly deplorable. Mr. Buitendijk had bought the entire menu in a shopping bag for the entire restaurant (with room left over). We can't think of a single reason to recommend this restaurant. We can only advise against it.

We had a great dining experience at Rijks. The service was warm and professional. The food was everything you'd expect from a Michelin starred restaurant: creative, precise and beautifully plated. The highlight was of course their famous beetroot millefeuille, great presentation and flavor. Balance of sweet, earthy and savory with a beurre blanc sauce that brings everything together. The wine list deserves a special mention as well: it's well curated with some older vintages and interesting options to pair with your dishes. The atmosphere is modern but relaxed, next time we'll make sure to book a seat by the kitchen to make the most out of the open kitchen. Highly recommended!

The most disappointing Michelin experience I’ve ever had. We came to Amsterdam for a quick 4-day trip and decided to treat ourselves to lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant. That’s when we found this place. Unfortunately, the service was indifferent from the moment we arrived — no greeting, no smile, no effort to make us feel welcome. After finishing our meal, we waited over five minutes for someone to clear our table. Then came the worst part: a fruit fly landed on my plate. When I pointed it out to the server, her response was, “What do you expect me to do? That’s coming from outside!” Absolutely unbelievable. I expected Michelin-level hospitality, not an attitude you’d find in a food court. Thanks for the memory, but I’ll never return — and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. .

Are you kidding me? This is a Michelin-starred restaurant?! Easily the worst one I’ve ever been to. The food was disappointing—mostly Western dishes mixed with Chinese sauces, which didn’t work for me. But the real shocker was the lack of service. We arrived a bit earlier than our 11:30 reservation. They weren’t open yet, which we understood—but when it suddenly started raining, we asked if we could wait inside. They said no, as they weren’t ready yet. No one offered any alternative or showed basic hospitality. A few minutes later, when the rain had already stopped, they told us we could come in to wait. Like… what’s the point? Thank you? During the meal, no one checked on our table. When a server cleared our plates, she dropped my friend’s utensils onto her chair while my friend was in the washroom—then picked them up without cleaning the chair. After we finished eating, our empty dishes sat there for over 5 minutes with no one in sight. Then a fruit fly started circling. My partner killed it (photo attached), and when we pointed it out to the server, she just said there was nothing they could do—no apology, no gesture, just dropped off the bill. They did waive one dish from the bill, but that’s not what we were asking for. Was a simple apology really that hard? Definitely would not recommend this place!

What do people usually expect when they go to a restaurant? Food, environment, service, price, maybe location...right? In this age of developed online communities, the environment and price are relatively transparent, and I personally think there is little controversy. Before going to a restaurant, you should be able to see the general environment and menu prices on the Internet. Food is sometimes hard to say, and the photos and taste may not suit everyone's appetite. What looks delicious may not suit everyone's appetite; what looks simple may sometimes be amazing! The only thing that is best to judge is the service. But the amazing thing is that many times, the invisible things are often the most impressive. In summary, this restaurant has a good location, good environment, and not too bad food, but as for the service, if someone thinks that "indifference" equals elegance, or "ignorance" equals style, then you can try it. With social media today, restaurant ambiance and pricing are easy to check online—no surprises there. Food is subjective: what looks great might not taste great to everyone, and simple dishes can be unexpectedly impressive. But service? That’s the easiest to judge—yet often the most overlooked. This place has a good location, nice vibe, and decent food. But if you think “ignoring guests” equals elegance, or “being dismissive” means class, then go ahead and try it.

We truly enjoyed our evening at Rijks. The service was flawless - our water glasses were filled regularly, the cutlery was exchanged after every dish, the wine pairing and my non-alcoholic pairing were served perfectly on time with the corresponding dishes. We asked for a different main course than stated on the set “Tafel” menu, which was no problem at all. Even though there was no official non-alcoholic drink pairing, they created one for me. The food was excellent and the Sweetbread - the chef’s signature dish - was a highlight. Thank you for this lovely evening!

Overall very disappointed in Rijks. I took the table menu. The first 4 dishes were very bland, lacking in flavor and often not at the right temperature. Things got a bit better from the mille feuille (signature dish), but I found the extra €20 supplement for this after the first 4 dishes very inappropriate. The service could also be better. Friendly, but not special or certainly not at star level in my opinion. Overall a very casual feel with a playlist that didn't fit the setting at all.

The food on King's Day was disappointing, three of the six dishes were all fresh and sour, which we thought was too much for a menu of six dishes, a matter of taste of course, but it seemed a bit "easy" to us. The "signature dish" (beetroot) was delicious and the grouse was also super tasty. Then had the cheese plate (delicious cheese). All in all, the food was fine, but not what we expected.

For me, chic means dining out, drinking champagne, looking deeply into each other's eyes and having deep conversations. Touching each other tenderly. Pampered with excellent food and great service. So far the idea. Rijks allowed us to either sit opposite each other or next to each other. But at the corner of the table, where you can look at each other and touch each other. That was forbidden. Literal. I therefore ask everyone who wants to eat here to sit on two adjacent sides of the table. As a protest. :) We cannot judge the food. We left after being asked twice to sit differently. Even at different tables. That in a star store. Well... what can I say. Perhaps this case is only intended for couples who no longer have much to say to each other.

Great bougie watch spot after the museum. They offer a lunch course and two full tasting menus of six courses each. Additional starters and a cheese plate before dessert or optional. You can also order à la carte. Wine pairings also available. Create a food and flavors that were all a little bit different, I noticed this particular set of course as I had had a really wide range of textures too. Pretty pricey, but all that information is available ahead of time so it really is your own fault :)

If possible, we would have rated 3.5 stars, not quite 4, not quite 3. RIJKS offers a very experimental and flavorful dining experience with unique tastes. We tried both the vegetarian and classic menus, and found the vegetarian option to be the better choice. The highlight of the evening was the signature dish, which was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the other dishes didn't quite meet this standard. The surroundings are beautiful, but we had hoped for a more historic atmosphere given the association with the Rijksmuseum. Similarly, the choices of music seem a bit confusing ranging from “Harvest Moon” and Disco Funk to Electronic Chill. We have previously dined at the Chef's other restaurant, Wils, which we enjoyed much more. Hence, overall, we left feeling a bit disappointed.

What a wonderful experience! Together with chefs Yascha Oosterberg and Friso van Amerongen, Bijdendijk represents the ‘kitchen of the Low Countries’. With his young team, he draws inspiration from home-grown ingredients, using the many international flavours that have influenced Dutch cuisine over the centuries. RIJKS® rightly received a Michelin star in 2016, rose from 16.5 to 17 points in the Gault & Millau guide in 2019 and was included in the prestigious list of the team behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants: the 50 Best Discovery that same year. Deserves 2 stars in my opinion.

Het Rijks had been on our list for a while, and the visit exceeded all expectations. The location next to the Rijksmuseum is enchanting, and the warm, atmospheric interior completes the experience. Four of us sat at a round table with a view of the open kitchen, which made the experience extra special. The food was, as you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant, of top quality. Especially the first dish, “fruits de mer”, was fantastic. The service deserves a special mention: professional, friendly and without any arrogance — just real hospitality. And then the sommelier…. What an asset to the government! Thanks to his advice, we enjoyed exceptional wines that matched the dishes perfectly. All in all, a culinary experience that we recommend to everyone. We will definitely come back!

We ate here recently, and it really did not live up to standards. For the price you are paying, the service and food should have been x100 times better. My partner ordered wine pairing, and with the first 3 dishes, they forgot, and we actually had to remind them. At the final bill , we actually found we were charged a full wine pairing plus and additional drink we never ordered. The dishes itself were unoriginal, and combinations were boring. And the dessert with beet, ew! Who makes a dessert entirely made out of beet?! It was disgusting, really (unless you love beet, I guess). If you really want to be amazed by unique combinations, your money is much better spent at Kaagman & Kortekaas.

Probably our best dinner ever, at least at the top of our experiences, what an experience. Great atmosphere, nice interactions with other tables in this open dining room. Selene was a sommelier who had selected the best wines for us to accompany the flawless dishes, a beautiful wine and food sensation. Disappointing experience at Rijks - Far below expectations We were really looking forward to our first dinner at Rijks, partly thanks to the many rave reviews and the Michelin star the restaurant has received. Unfortunately, the experience was completely disappointing. - Reception and service The reception was anything but Michelin star worthy and even somewhat sloppy. There was a lack of clear explanation about Rijks' concept, the menu and the dishes. The staff was not only poorly prepared, but also not representative of the level you would expect from a restaurant in this price range. The employees could not, among other things, name the ingredients of the dishes and did not provide detailed explanations, which you should absolutely expect. Moreover, the staff lacked enthusiasm and expertise, which gave the whole a less than professional appearance. It seemed like everyone had their first day at work. Finally, it was particularly disappointing that, when leaving the restaurant, the entire kitchen staff watched a movie together, a la public, instead of saying a friendly goodbye. - The dishes The food itself was fine, but far from exceptional. The dishes did not offer any surprising flavor combinations or special accents that you would expect from a star-worthy restaurant. Some dishes were even served cold or lukewarm. In our opinion, this absolutely does not justify the price of €150 per person, and was downright disappointing. Positive point: the sommelier One positive point was the sommelier, who fully met our expectations. He had the expertise, passion and enthusiasm that we should expect from a restaurant of this caliber. His service was the only aspect of the evening that was truly at the level of a Michelin star restaurant. - Closing Just like the reception, the end of the evening was also very disappointing. There was no proactive attitude from the staff, no one asked about our experiences or offered the opportunity for feedback. This gave the impression that the restaurant had little interest in the experience of its guests. - Conclusion Normally we never write reviews, but given the great disappointment we experienced at Rijks, we wanted to share our experiences. As avid restaurant lovers, we visit many eateries every week, but the experience at Rijks has disappointed us so much that we hope that the restaurant will take our feedback to heart and actually do something with it. This experience is definitely not star-worthy.

Disappointing Experience – Wouldn’t Return The biggest issue was the seating: the hard benches were extremely uncomfortable, leaving me with back pain even days later. Surprisingly, cushions weren’t available even upon request. Best is to book a round table to avoid the benches. All round tables were pre-booked when I came, so it seems to be a known issue. The food and wine were decent but nothing memorable or worth recommending. Service felt rushed and impersonal, adding to an overall sense of being hurried through the meal. Additionally, the tables were packed too closely, making the atmosphere cramped and noisy. With so many excellent dining options in Amsterdam at similar price points, I can’t recommend this place. There are far better choices offering more comfort, quality, and value.

Last night, I had an incredible dining experience at Rijks. The exquisite food and attentive service made it one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The high expectations I had for this renowned restaurant were certainly exceeded. We both opted for the classic tasting menu, and each dish was truly exceptional. There were also delightful snacks and a gorgeous sourdough bread that we could enjoy between courses if we felt hungry. Needless to say, this restaurant ensures that you won’t leave feeling hungry. Since neither of us was drinking alcohol, we were impressed by the extensive selection of non-alcoholic beverages. The staff provided excellent suggestions that complemented our meals perfectly. I highly recommend Rijks and will definitely be returning in the future, thanks a lot!

I had the seven course meal with wine pairing. Three of the dishes were exquisite the rest was quite good. The wines were all fantastic. But, all things included, at 250 euros a head it wasn't good enough by quite a long shot. For that price point I expect almost every dish to be a hit and for the wine pairings to be pairings not combinations that simply don't clash. Hence three stars for the food. The service was too slow, we started at 18:00 and left at 23:30. Even with seven courses, most of which being two to six bites, this was also subpar. The worst part though was that even though we had explicitly said that my wife has a lactose allergy while booking, the kitchen was clearly only learning about it when we arrived and was not properly prepared. Then they served her a dish with a butter sauce only for us to say "errrr I'm pretty sure Beurre is French for butter, is this OK for her to eat?". Dropping the ball like this is forgivable at a pancake restaurant where the teenage waiter doesn't really know what lactose even is but at this level of restaurant I expect better. So all in all I had a lovely evening with my friends but I will not be going back considering what else is on offer in Amsterdam at this price point.

Fantastic gastronomic restaurant in the Rijksmuseum. It is an excellent option for those who appreciate both art and gastronomy and want to take a break from their visit to the museum, eat very well, and resume their visit efficiently. We opted for the lunch menu, which has “only” four courses and it was a perfect option. The food was exquisite and the service was extremely efficient (waiting times were very short). Each dish was prepared taking care of every detail, intelligently combining flavors and textures and carrying out interesting gastronomic fusions. The oysters were fresh and silky, the fish at their perfect cooking point, accompanied by sauces and ingredients that enhanced and highlighted their flavor. Good selection of wines, friendly and professional service and bright and very pleasant place. The menu is not very extensive but the dishes are all very interesting. It is also made in an original way, with references to the museum's pictorial works.

As the proverbial saying goes - a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link. In this case - their weakest link was their sardine dish and junior staff. See picture - we found 2 fish scales in the dish (which itself was already rather putrid due to conflicting flavors which failed to complement the rawness of the fish). This is hardly acceptable for any restaurant- let alone a “Michelin star restaurant”. We initially thought it was plastic given its perfect circle texture - but the junior staff later confirmed it to be a scale but did it in a very matter of fact manner. If you’re in the wrong - learn to be apologetic not try to wiggle your way out by being sly and pedantic. After we found the second scale - then the manager came and offered apologies, write off (mind you only if one dish) and a complimentary beetroot dish. Overall everything was otherwise fine - but the starter definitely ruined the whole experience. If this is the best Amsterdam can offer, perhaps the city is left a bit wanting. Perhaps the Michelin commission should reconsider their valuation process. I’ve been to dozens of 1/2* and a few 3*, mostly London - but nothing falls to this standard (not even close).

We dined here on Valentine’s day, they had a special menu which was really well developed. The hosts were really attentive and friendly especially because of the special occasion. The signature dish of Joris Bijdendijk, the beetroot with beure blanc is among my favourite things I’ve ever eaten and I still to this day make an approximated version myself. Booked platinum via Amexco with a credit of E125. What an unpleasant experience. We were given A5 size on a piece of paper. This later turned out to be a choice of small dishes. After we announced that we intended to have dinner, an A4 menu appeared. Ordered a glass of whiskey after dinner. In the store per bottle E48. We were charged €148 for this. Managers, whom we had not seen all evening to discuss this, suddenly disappeared. Our conclusion is therefore that if you book with a discount via Amexco, this will be taken back at checkout! Let this be a warning to future customers.

We've been to other fine dining/Michelin restaurants before, but this one stands out! Super friendly staff, great food, pretty outside restaurant. The food didn't feel like a combination of random flavours, it was delicious. My partner had the vegetarian lunch course and I had the standard one - we were both impressed. He loved the beetroot dish and for me, the fish Tarbot dish was fantastic. We'd highly recommend those dishes for sure.

Meal of year for me so far. Rijks' cuisine is at the same time sustainable, enjoyable and just plain good for your taste buds. The amazing thing is that this is done by going back to the basics of a good dish composition where all the attention goes to achieving elegance and balance. Some dishes, like the signature beetroot and butter blanc, work with "poor" ingredients to result in a masterpiece, merging complex aromatic flavors with a warm hug at the core of the dish. These dishes are very technical, but they are never artificial or dryly intellectual but, instead, they deliver a quintessential comfort food experience. This understated sophistication is what fine dining should be without going for fireworks or philosophical messages.
