Sumatra House in Binnenstad-Noord

Ons favoriete restaurant gesloten wegens vacantie, derhalve dit restaurant gekozen. Met 3 personen voor de rijsstafel gekozen, matige porties zowel rijst als gerechten. Smaken overigens redelijk lekker. Bij het nabestellen van een portie witte rijst kwam het klapstuk op de rekening 6 euro voor een bakje witte rijst.De eerder gevraagde nasi koening was al op ?? Anyway een ervaring rijker, maar toch maar weer naar ons favoriete restaurant de volgende keer.

Met z'n vieren gegeten bij Sumatra House. Driemaal nasi rames en eenmaal geitenstoof. 'Er is geen witte rijst vandaag, wel nasi kuning'.... maar daar heb je toch witte rijst voor nodig!? Mevrouw de eigenares-kokkin zegt dat ze het te druk had die dag met catering: kregen wij dus nu de nasi kuning die over was van die catering? (dan tweemaal verkocht, bingo!). Keuze uiteindelijk dan maar voor tweemaal nasi kuning en tweemaal gebakken rijst (die is er, net zo gek, dus wel?). De geitenstoof blijkt een bakje vocht met 5 stukjes vleesschraapsel (bij klacht daarover door iets even onduidelijks vervangen). Bij de rames twee soorten vlees: iets wat een soort rendang moet zijn en wat uitgedroogde stukjes onbestemd vlees. Twee soorten groente: vers! wordt althans gezegd...... spruiten (vers in juli?) en sperziebonen (zonneklaar uit de diepvries). En alles met een vage, vlakke smaak. Oh ja, ook twee porties saté erbij besteld: niet geserveerd maar wel op de rekening geplaatst....gewiekst? Een absolute afknapper dit restaurant. Om het allemaal feestelijk en in stijl af te ronden: twee van ons (die met de gebakken rijst) geven over, één ter plaatse en één later. Selamat makan!....eet smakelijk; echt nooit meer deze tent.

Delicious food, cozy and clean….

Excellent, delicious Indonesian food. A bit different from other Indonesian cuisines, but that's definitely something. A good amount of food on the table, including the vegetarian rijsttafel we had.

We had a delicious plate of food, tasteful and fine. We could sit outside. Ate here again a year later. A disaster has nothing to do with the most delicious cuisine in the world. A plate of nassi Rames. Is a plate with vegetables that have little to do with Indonesian cuisine. Toemis beans, does not look like it. And the rest does not belong there, carrots, etc. Meat? A scoop of rendang dried out meat, and a scoop of ?? Babi ketjap or something that should resemble it, No ketjap or sambal on the table. Ramen that has not been cleaned for 6 years. No, selamat Makan does not count here. A piece of kroepoek cannot even be added. No, not again🥵

My first time having Indonesian cuisine and it was delicious. Very small restaurant so recommend making a reservation. I enjoyed my evening here!

Four of us visited the restaurant and wanted to order a menu, but only for three people, as experience has shown that four of us would never be able to manage such a menu. We were denied this as the waitress insisted that each person order at least 1 meal. We complied with this request. However, the menu cost €33 per person, which was not justified. Although some bowls of goodies were placed on the table, which were filling, €33 per person is extremely unrealistic and far too high. The food itself tasted great, but we didn't wait longer than 15 minutes, which suggests that the food was (at least partially) warmed up. Despite everything, the waitress was very friendly and our dog was also brought water and a chewing bone straight away. However, inflexibility regarding menu ordering or asking for tap water was prevalent.

I came across this restaurant by accident. We went with a group of 7 colleagues. As it was a small kitchen, they recommended the typical Indonesian Rice Table. Which is a traditional menus with different dishes that you share. They all loved it. The restaurant is tiny and cosy. The service is good and authentic.

A cozy hodgepodge inside, with flowers and trinkets from everywhere. However, the food is of very poor quality and can hardly be called Indonesian. A strange mix of Brussels sprouts, tasteless tomatoes, and even a sour onion seemed utterly unappetizing. The gado gado had far too few bean sprouts, green beans, and almost no satay sauce at all. And it was also very expensive, especially considering the subpar quality.

We came last night to try Indonesian food during our vacation. The portions are generous for a reasonable price, and the food was very tasty. We will definitely return next time we pass through Leiden

Sumatra House makes a good first impression with a cozy, homely interior with authenticity. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing after that. The choice for vegetarians was very limited, and illogical restrictions were imposed, such as only frying a minimum number of dishes. The food seemed to come mostly from the microwave, which we heard continuously during our visit. The lumpia was not fresh and not crispy, and we even doubted the hygiene when we saw that a used container of kroepoek was put back in the cupboard unwashed. When we decided not to order a main course, we were told that the “restaurant policy” requires guests to order at least one main course. Although the waiter insisted and allowed it after a discussion, this did not feel hospitable and even somewhat threatening.

We don't understand why the restaurant only has 4.2 stars. It is really worth the 5 stars. The only pity was that it was all so delicious that we were too full to try the dessert, because it looked great too🤪. We will definitely come back when we are in Leiden again. Vergeleken met een aantal jaren terug viel eigenlijk alles tegen. Vooral de hoeveelheid eten bij een rijsttafel voor 4 pers. Dit leek eerder voor 2-3. Normaal houd je wel over maar nu was het echt te weinig. Vlees was wel mals maar twee van de drie groentegerechtjes waren flauw en waterig. Verder geen side dishes als seroendeng of emping. Bij de spekkoek kreeg de één 3 stukjes de ander 2... Absoluut geen goed prijs-kwaliteitverhouding! Als laatste domper werd bij de koffie ongevraagd de rekening gebracht met de mededeling dat we ons niet hoefden te haasten maar dat de volgende reservering over 5 min zou komen. Bij mijn reservering en aankomst was dit niet vermeld. Hier kom ik niet meer terug.

We came here last night for dinner. The quality of the food is excellent, the waiter who served us was very sweet and customer friendly. What really caught my eye that I found very different from other restaurants: 1. Interior decor, ranging from plants to statues and paintings, the level of detail and time put into the decor is astonishing, 2. Fresh flower bouquets on the table which are not common to see as they are expensive and restaurants often tend to go for the fake ones, 3. The selection of tampons, lady pads and deodorant in the ladies' toilet was wonderful. Thank you so much for paying attention to these sorts of needs. I think I never saw this is any restaurant before! Everything was absolutely perfect! Thank you so so much!

Delicious! Affordable tasty and beautiful decor

My friend and I were looking for a meal, but I wasn't very hungry. My friend wanted a full dish, while I only wanted a starter. However, we were informed that it wasn't possible; two people must order two full meals. This policy wasn't communicated anywhere. I understand they need to make money, but we would have been out in 30 minutes. The customer service was terrible, and it was the first time I've ever had such an experience in a restaurant. We decided to leave, and I recommend you do the same. Go somewhere that values customers.

Nicely decorated and delicious Indonesian food. Sharing a dish (or even a starter) is an absolute no-go, regardless of whether you also take starters and/or wine, etc. The starters are listed per 1 on the menu, but they can only be ordered per batch. For less "the fryer won't turn on". By the way, this is not stated anywhere. Because we weren't allowed to share, we ended up, logically, with food left over. You get the doggy bag containers on the table and you can then find a way to put it in yourself. The feeling of service and dining out was a bit off for us. By the way, that's a shame, because it's worth a visit for the food and the decor.

The food is nice and portions are very large for the price; the restaurant is quite small but cozy, I think the staff member that was serving us was a bit new so didn’t know a few things that we asked but it wasn’t a big deal.

Authentic food, but unfortunately small portions for the price. Very warm service, quick and attentive. The ambience is a jumble of everything from rustic clocks and antlers to bric-a-brac and Asian decor.

Voor het eerst bij Sumatra gegeten. Het was heerlijk. We hebben binnen gezeten. Het is een klein charmant restaurant met vriendelijke bediening. Er is ook een terras maar daar hebben wij nu geen gebruik van gemaakt, wellicht volgende keer. De kaart is best uitgebreid maar niet enorm. Precies goed eigenlijk. Het enige dat ik heb gemist was Tjendol maar dat is ook wel begrijpelijk want dat zal niet enorm gewild zijn. De spekkoek maakte alles weer goed. Kort en goed, we komen zeer zeker terug om nog eens te genieten.

Located a few minutes' walk from the central train station. Beautiful attractive terrace at the front. Due to some wind we took a seat inside. Neat toilets. Lots of choice of food. You should count on €23/pp. Glass of wine €5.2. There is no tap water available. Only expensive bottled water is available. Which we found very strange. Waited half an hour for our dish. Still, all in all satisfied.

Wat een ballentent is dit. We hadden zin in Indisch en in buiten zitten. Een belletje en een dame verzekerde ons dat er een heel mooi terras was. Toen we er aankwamen bleek het krappe terras te bestaan uit 2 tafels en een zestal op elkaar gepropte stoelen. stoelen. Een tafel was bezet met 2 heren dus wij kregen de andere tafel. Tot mijn verbazing diende zich vervolgens een Duits stel aan dat meldde dat ze om 7 uur terugkwamen en graag buiten wilden zitten. Volgens de bediening geen probleem. Bij hun terugkomst bleek het de bedoeling dat die mensen naast ons kwamen zitten, nog net niet op onze schoot. We zijn uit ergernis maar weg gegaan. Dit was de eerste en laatste keer Sumatra House. Ben nog nooit zo onbeschoft behandeld.

Heel erg lekker gegeten en zeer gastvrije bediening. De kokkin is een schat! We waren met negen personen er we hebben het aan haar over gelaten wat er geserveerd werd. Super!

Had high expectations of this place based on other reviews. However it was disappointing. Only one young waiter serving. He was rushed off his feet. Several of the mains not available. When the food eventually arrived all the meals were made from frozen vegetables and, bizzarely, frozen sprouts and crinkle cut carrots (a dead giveaway if there is one) seasoned in shop bought chilli sauce. Nothing Indonesian about this. The spicy mackerel came encased in a banana leaf sarcophagus. Inside was a very small and very bony portion of mackerel. More bone than fish. The meat was likely leftover from other places and you need the mandible of a determined camel to chew this leathery old stuff. In short the food was very disappointing and massively overpriced. It was presented nicely. If it wasn't for the distraction of the random assortment of faux Egyptian, Greek, Indonesian and Dutch tat the whole experience would have been irredemable.

We had an early evening supper here on a Sunday. They are open from 1700, which was perfect for us. It was busy even early on a Sunday evening - we had not booked, but they managed to find us a table. The food is excellent - we opted from a set range of dishes served with rice - two meat, two veg. There were plenty of other options but ours was delicious, plentiful and well chosen. It's five minutes to the railway station from here, so an excellent place for a last meal before heading out of town.

We each had a plate consisting of rice with 2 servings each of meat and vegetables plus a boiled egg and a spoonful of warm salad. It appeared to have been made hours before and reheated. The meat dishes (both chicken) were dry but flavoured differently, no sauce with either. No drink menu, she has it "in her head". One server for a full restaurant so very slow. There is lots to look at as the room is FULL of a mass of unrelated clutter, half from Indonesia. Never returning!

Charging for tap water, the biggest no-no in food service. All food was microwaved, and while the goat was tasty, it was by no means worth 22 euro. Waiter was friendly and clearly embarrassed by the restaurant's policy.

Not worth the price by any means. Not only did they do the biggest restaurant faux-pas of charging you for tap water (3.50), everything was microwaved. We could see and hear the kitchen and the microwave was going all night for us and the other customers. Food wasn't bad, but 22 euro for a microwaved main course is not what I expect.

We had a delicious meal and drinks here. Starter spring roll, main course nasi and satay Sumatra, delicious tender meat with tasty vegetables and timbale rice. All this in an intimate, cozy atmosphere. The hostess came for a personal chat and gave us tips about beautiful Leiden. Highly recommended!

3.5 stars out of 5, it was pretty tasty. Their saté was the highlight of the dinner. Their chicken soup was pretty good as well.

I had a really good meal here. The service is good, very friendly. What I like is that when ordering you are asked if you have any food allergies. This is then taken into account during the preparation of the food. The atmosphere in the restaurant is good. With beautiful Indonesian decoration. The food is (I think) a bit spicy by default. I like that myself, but it might be something to take into account.

You enter a small restaurant (with the option to eat outside), nice and cozy decor... small menu... super nice people... everything tasted delicious... very good mix of herbs... .and was certainly not greasy...

Tasty and spicy food with really friendly staff, always smiling :) We got to try different typical dishes, the quantities are enough, you could also share them. We were 4 and 3 main dishes would have been enough.

We had the rijstafel for 4, all dishes were delicious and full of spices, perfect portion. Friendly and professional service. Absolutely loved the decor of the restaurant, you're really transported. Fresh piones flowers in the vase and candle lit on the table when we arrived, nice touch.

Hele gezellige ambiance. Echter 1.45 uur gewacht op onze maaltijd waardoor wij bijna op het punt stonden te vertrekken zonder eten. Uiteindelijk wel prima gegeten. Na het eten nog koffie besteld, helaas met een voetenbadje... Heus een leuk restaurantje maar voor ons geen volgende keer, jammer

Heel gezellig ingericht ‘huiskamer-achting” restaurant, lekker authentiek ingericht. Vriendelijke bediening, heerlijk eten, niet te flauw, maar ook niet te pittig. Heerlijke smaken, goed vlees en voldoende qua hoeveelheid. Ook het nagerecht (ijs) was lekker. Heel redelijk geprijsd. Een aanrader!

Klein restaurant met weinig ruimte om te gaan zitten en op te staan. Bediening was vriendelijk. Helaas was het niet mogelijk alleen een voorgerecht te bestellen. We moesten elk een hoofdgerecht bestellen. Voor senioren zijn de porties veel te groot. De smaak is voor mensen uit Indonesia te flauw en de groenten te lang doorgekookt. Het zag er wel mooi uit.

Heerlijk eten. De visgerechten zijn uitstekend. De prijzen zij een een beetje raar. Alles kost bijna evenveel. Vreemd.

Smaken zijn vers en goed. Bediening is vriendelijk en attent. Klein restaurant, kleine kaart, maar juist daardoor fijne sfeer.

Ik geef 4 sterren omdat je er heerlijk kunt eten, vriendelijke eigenaresse die zelf kook en aan tafel komt vragen of het goed was. Wij aten de rijsttafel. Gerechten zouden wel iets verfijnder mogen, er zijn zeg maar betere Indonesische restaurants, maar ja, zo blijft het, over smaak valt niet te twisten. Gaan we nog eens als we in Leiden zijn? Zeker!

We walked randomly in this restaurant and we were surprised to enter this cozy place, the man welcoming us was really gentle and the food amazing.

We hebben afgelopen zondagavond (16-10-2022) hier gegeten. Het was heeeeeerlijk en een adres om echt heen te gaan. Van voorgerecht tot nagerecht was het geweldig. Prijs/kwaliteit was gewoon goed. We hebben beloofd dat als we weer in leiden zouden zijn we er weer heen zouden gaan en dat doen we ook zeker. Absoluut een aanrader.

Fourth time here. Service and food was much worse than usual. What a shame since I know both could have been better.
