Have you ever dined at a restaurant where you are served food before they even ask your name? If not, then you definitely must visit The Lemon Tree. This first bite sets the tone for a wonderful experience: a surprise menu curated by the chef that unfolds slowly, with each course offering a unique taste sensation. We opted for the accompanying wines, which add an extra touch to the experience. Add to that beautiful decor and smooth, attentive, and very friendly service, and you’ll understand why this place is high on our "return" list.

You shouldn't change a good habit. Our three daughters treated us once again to a pleasant and culinary evening out. This time to The Lemon Tree in Deventer. The welcome was already surprising. We were immediately given an amuse-bouche, so we walked into the restaurant already enjoying our meal. A spot at the large communal table in the middle of the establishment. An excellent spot, but to our taste, the table is a bit too wide to really relax and talk to each other. The service (including staff from Wierden) was excellent and pleasant to deal with. Everyone loves the presentation of the dishes and the kitchen staff, which are told through storytelling, but to my taste, it is a bit too contrived. Those little cards are nice, but I would rather see someone from the kitchen brigade present and explain their dish at the table. The dishes were all excellently prepared and bold in flavor. Kudos. It is a pity that the vegetable dish in particular was the exception to the rule. Beautifully presented, but the flavors didn't quite come through. The presentation of the dishes could be a little less sloppy here and there. But the flavors were more than exquisite. The pickled salmon, the red snapper, the corn-fed chicken, and the roe deer were truly excellent. When you are the last to leave the establishment, you can safely conclude that it was a very successful evening. Many thanks to the daughters and staff of The Lemon Tree.

Quite the opposite: every bite is beautifully balanced, full of character, and even better when paired with one of their carefully selected wines. The service deserves special praise. The team is genuinely warm, attentive, knowledgeable, and effortlessly accommodating. They make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Even the little details stand out—my handbag was given its own place instead of ending up on the floor. Small gesture, big difference. Hospitality like this is rare in the Netherlands. What makes this place truly unique is the storytelling. Every dish has a history, every ingredient a purpose, every wine a reason for being on your table. It transforms dinner into a journey. The atmosphere is just as memorable. One moment you feel as if you're being guided by a slightly mad scientist, the next by a passionate local farmer, and then by someone who personally searched the vineyards of Italy for the perfect bottle. Somehow, it all comes together effortlessly. This restaurant delights every sense—your eyes, your nose, your ears, and above all your taste buds, which will still be reminiscing long after you've left. Without a doubt, this is the Noma of Deventer.

We were seated at the captain's table, downstairs in the basement near the kitchen. It was a very nice table with a spacious bench, perfect for an intimate dinner with a view of the waitstaff. We chose the 5-course menu with wine and non-alcoholic pairing. The dishes were refined. The non-alcoholic pairing was delicious almost continuously; a real surprise. The kitchen brigade was working with great concentration and also took the time to chat with guests. Sommelier Shen made us feel very welcome from the start. The waitstaff was young, friendly, and fast, with few mistakes. However, we did notice that the waitstaff's sleeves almost ended up in the dishes a few times while serving; that could be a bit sharper. Two minor downsides. Downstairs in the basement, it got quite warm after a while. Also, the toilet sinks are located outside the toilets themselves, in the hallway. That feels inconvenient; you don't have a moment's privacy to do your hair, for example, and other guests constantly see people washing their hands or standing in line waiting. Despite these reservations, we will certainly be back.

We had a fantastic meal and a wonderful evening! We were here a few weeks ago for my in-laws' 40th anniversary, in the private dining area. If we lived closer, we would definitely come by more often! The dishes were cleverly conceived and presented, and the service was friendly and pleasantly nonchalant. We felt welcome, and the staff were present when needed as well as quietly polishing glasses in the background, haha. Highly recommended!

Very good restaurant. Relaxing atmosphere, good dishes, and a very nice and young team. The welcome was impeccable. We really liked the concept; thanks to the cards placed on the table, you can take a quick look at the dish in between courses, see where it comes from, and the idea behind it. The food was daring! The chefs are not afraid to combine harsh and acidic flavors with earthy notes, forgotten vegetables, and herbs. As a result, each dish truly stands on its own, and no two dishes look alike. We were pleasantly surprised by the cauliflower dish; we hadn't expected that. Simple ingredients have been transformed into fine flavors and textures—kudos! The wine selection complemented the dishes very well. It was nice to see that they also look at Dutch producers! The only tip we would give: The white wine with a Muscat blend (I think with the 3rd course) gets lost a bit against the dish and the preceding wines. In our opinion, a slightly fresher wine would suit this better. All in all, a truly relaxed and top-notch evening. We live in the region and will definitely come back here!

Finally managed to find the time for an evening at Lemon Tree. Excellent! From the moment we arrived until we left, you notice that you are dealing with a seasoned and well-trained team. Both the kitchen staff and the hosts have everything perfectly organized, are well-informed, and know how to guide you through the menu in a contemporary manner. The dishes are complete, beautifully balanced with the wines, and the ‘journey’ told through the menu cards presented with each course provides some nice side information. Just one point of attention, though? Just keep separate men's and women's toilets. It is of course very trendy to design your restrooms in a ‘trendier’ way, but the ladies prefer to stay dry with a clean toilet floor ;) Otherwise, nothing but praise; see you next time!

The wine list has some lovely gems. There wasn't much depth to the courses. I was completely blown away by the add-ons. Just make the dish as it should be instead of selling everything on top of the world.

It was our first time at Lemon Tree, and what a wonderful and, above all, delicious evening we had! We opted for the 6-course dinner, followed by the alcohol-free wine pairing. Let's start with the hospitality and service. Upon arrival, your coat is taken and you're escorted to your table. You're briefed on the concept, and after your welcome snack and amuse-bouche(s), you can choose how many courses you'd like. Dietary requirements and preferences are also taken seriously. It's a surprise menu, after all, but it certainly didn't disappoint. As a starter, you get a delicious, artisanal sourdough roll with a variety of spreads. Let me tell you, that "luxurious" herb butter you normally enjoy is nothing compared to this. You immediately taste the time and effort put into all the products and ingredients, and the expertise is truly applied. All our dishes were served at a pleasant pace. We weren't rushed or interrupted during the tasting. The timing was always perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes, the service, and the attention to detail. You can taste, see, and sense that the people who work here are truly dedicated to providing you with an optimal experience and—for us, certainly—an unforgettable evening. From their knowledge of drinks to the presentation of the plates and the food; wow! We'll definitely be back.

Last night we discovered another culinary hotspot! I already had a hunch, because I follow several people in the culinary world who rave about it. But now it was finally happening: we got to experience it for ourselves. From the moment we walked in, things got off to a great start. We were warmly greeted with a smile and a joke and enthusiastically led to our table. There, our journey began—a journey full of flavors and experiences. Cards explaining the dishes were laid out on the table, a lovely touch that immediately piqued our curiosity. Shortly after, the sommelier arrived, clearly someone with knowledge and passion for his craft. After two delicious glasses of wine, we had the perfect aperitif. Then came the amuse-bouches… and if this is the start of the evening, we'd love to have seven courses! Unfortunately, time didn't allow for that. But what a start: refined amuse-bouches with surprising flavors. Then came the first courses, followed by the next. Fish and vegetarian—not normally our first choices—but these were incredibly delicious. This kitchen truly cooks at the highest level. Then more fish, and then meat: every single piece was spot on. Fantastic, guys! You know exactly how to do it. The service also deserves a huge compliment: relaxed, not too stiff, making it easy to strike up a conversation. You even discover that you share common roots. And the absolute icing on the cake was that we even got a tour. Lemon Tree, you stole our hearts. We'll definitely be back. We had a fantastic evening at The Lemon Tree for our one-year anniversary. The six-course dinner with paired wines exceeded all our expectations. We were seated in a charming spot under the lemon tree by the stairs and immediately felt at ease. Sommelier Duncan completed the experience with his enthusiasm and knowledge. An unforgettable evening and highly recommended!

Apparently it was pure luck that they were able to seat us as walk ups on a Friday evening, as they're fully booked 2 months ahead for the weekends. The maitre and sommelier live and breathe hospitality and make you feel really special. When we heard the chef worked at Rode Kooper and Swarte Ruijter we had to eat here as these are also such magnificent culinaire experiences. And the kitchen crew delivered, one piece of art after the other. Every 10 weeks they create a new menu with choice of 4 to 8 courses. A journey through the Netherlands of sourced ingredients from sustainable producers, a much from farmer to table as possible. Duncan did a brilliant job on finding perfect wine pairings. As we had to drive to Haarlem afterwards we enjoyed de-alcoholized Sekt and half glasses. The three chefs did a stellar job merging their there characters, magnificently decorated on the original china plates. From kingfish and umami of kombucha and bonito to Jacobs scallops with gnocchi and parsnip (could use a little less dominant cheese) to the wild deer with foie gras. And also the extra course of sweetbread with sweet potato in curry was delicious. We ended the night with icecream of pine with Jerusalem artichoke, never thought I'd meet those two in my desert. When we left the two gents leading the (surprisingly junior) waiting staff gave us a warm goodbye.

The food made us feel really unwell, and we regretted eating here. I see we’re not the only ones who have had this experience. The restaurant’s concept of telling a story is very creative, the service is good, and the presentation of the dishes is also nice. However, a good restaurant should also prioritize the quality of its ingredients to avoid food-related illness. The wine selection was not impressive. The chairs are very uncomfortable, especially considering the amount of time you’re expected to spend there.

My only comment is that many dishes have too many ingredients, making them a bit overdone. If there's even one drop, you really don't need to mention it. Tasty, but a little less fuss would be better. I'd like to go more often.

We had a wonderful, cozy evening here. The waiters were super friendly and attentive. The restaurant is spacious, giving you plenty of privacy at your table, which was great. It did get quite warm inside as the evening progressed. We had a 6-course menu, which included one of the Bob wine pairings. Everything was well explained at the table, both the courses and the wines. We had a delicious meal, and the various dishes and ingredients were beautifully and creatively presented. It was great to receive amuse-bouches in the style of the different chefs! I contacted the Lemon Tree beforehand because a slightly modified menu would suit me better. That was no problem at all, and we were welcomed with open arms. I had a wonderful meal and am very grateful to the restaurant for willingly doing this for me. Highly recommended!

De sfeer is heel ongedwongen en erg vriendelijk. Geen linnen maar wel een bestekblok. Kaart is 4,5 of 6 gangen menu, en dat is prima. Personeel heel erg goed. Alles loopt vloeiend en ze hebben veel kennis van de gerechten en wijn. Waarom geen 5? Nou, in deze prijsklasse (€120 - € 150 pp) is er concurrentie die beter is. De porties zijn uiteraard klein op een fancy bord en er worden wel 10 ingrediënten genoemd, waarvan er dus maar een druppel in zit. Smaak is prima maar ook niet uitmuntend. Zou ik vaker gaan? Jazeker. Het is erg leuk, mooie ervaring en je hebt een leuke avond met goed eten en mooie wijnpairing.

Had a fantastic dinner at this beautiful restaurant, no pretentiousness! Several flavors were unique and fantastic. Even the three flavors of butter served with the bread were excellent. Apparently, the menu was in honor of the new chef, who was the talk of the town all evening. But the chef was nowhere to be seen. It was also striking that three employees truly excelled in service and were also very good at explaining the dishes. The rest rushed through or provided limited information; because everyone was sitting close together, this difference was easily noticeable at other tables. The number of upselling attempts did get annoying towards the end of the evening; they could have been more subtle.

A very nice restaurant with excellent cuisine (15 points Gault Millau), delicious wines, and friendly service. One criticism: While all tables received bread with three kinds of butter, we had to ask if we could have that too. For coffee/tea, other tables received a brown wooden box with sweets. We only received the coffee... Both leave a negative aftertaste, despite the very good food. So, if you go there, be careful.

Yes, what can I say about this....! In all respects a BEAUTIFUL kitchen and perfect service, a real evening out to enjoy for weeks...! One point of criticism is that the chef did not come to the table, while we had a table with the chef in the kitchen...! But that does not stop us from recommending it to others...! Last April we went to The Lemon Tree for the first time, and what a great experience it was — definitely not the last time! A place where atmosphere, taste and service come together perfectly. Also all compliments to the staff: from the moment we entered we were warmly welcomed and the service was fantastic the entire evening. Because we have been married for 38 years today, we made a reservation at this restaurant. The welcome was warm, we were neatly brought to the table. The service was very smooth and very friendly. There was a message on the table for us to congratulate us, we really appreciate this gesture. We chose 6 courses. Each dish was carefully presented very nicely and it tasted excellent. In april een bezoek gebracht aan The Lemon Tree in Deventer. We waren hier al een keer eerder geweest een paar jaar terug voor de chef's table, nu het 5 gangen menu 'gewoon' boven in het restaurant. We begonnen de avond met een glas van de Courtier rosé champagne. Door de toevoeging van rode wijn later in het proces gaf het de champagne een donkerdere kleur dan gebruikelijk voor een rosé maar daardoor ook fruitigere smaken. Een aanrader! Amuses zijn een krokant broodje met nep kaviaar met daarna een lookalike mini worstenbroodje als ode aan de Brabantse komaf van de chef, een classic steak tartare met bieten topping en witte asperges met gefermenteerde venkel en tomaat. Leuk idee om het te laten lijken of je kaviaar op tafel krijgt, het worstenbroodje in een leuke knipoog naar de komaf van de chef maar heeft natuurlijk niets met de Scandinavische keuken te maken (wel lekker). De bieten op steak tartare zijn heerlijk en de witte asperges zijn top, allebei lekker fris! Het eerste gerecht is forel met koolrabi, lekker fris en rustig om mee te beginnen. In combinatie met de Verdejo erg lekker, deze smaakt goed en is een klassieke stijl Verdejo uit Spanje. Vervolgens mijn favoriet van de avond; knolraap met macadamia. Op zichzelf is dit gerecht niet heel spannend totdat je de vinaigrette erbij proeft. Deze is gemaakt met wat japaleno en geeft het een goede pittige smaak. De wijn hierbij was ook perfect: een Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Niet alleen een van mijn favoriete plaatsen in Italië, ook een van de lekkerdere wijnen. Goed passend bij het frisse pittige karakter van de japaleno. De derde gang was een zeeduivel met calamaris en gefermenteerde peen. Dit gerecht was wat zwaarder in smaak wat een mooie opbouw gaf richting het hoofdgerecht. Combinatie wijn was een Chenin blanc uit Zuid-Afrika die gerijpt was op Frans eiken, lekker. Het hoofdgerecht werd kalfswang met witte asperge en een saus van zwarte knoflook. Goed bereid en een mooi hoogtepunt. Afsluitend als dessert kwam er fruitige vruchten met hazelnoot. Hier werd een moscato d'asti bij geserveerd, deze combinatie was helaas wat minder. Gelukkig maakte de friandises het met de koffie weer goed! Samengevat was het eten goed en lekker en passend bij de tijd van het jaar en de Scandinavische keuken (veel vis, frisse smaken en weinig kruiden). De inrichting en hele ambiance van het restaurant is erg mooi en ook passend met de vele afwerkingen van hout. Het is duidelijk dat hier naar hogere waarderingen wordt gezocht binnen o.a. Michelin. Op het niveau van service zijn er dan nog wel verbeterpunten te vinden. Het eten was erg lekker en zeker kijkend naar de prijs goed in verhouding. De sfeer is ook goed en de bediening is attend. Lettend op kleine mogelijke verbeter punten zou ik tussen de 4,5/5 en 4,7/5 waarderen. Dit kan niet op Tripadvisor dus voor mij 5/5!

Thoroughly enjoyed a 6-course dinner with oysters and champagne beforehand. You will be pampered here from start to finish. Everything is thought of. De verwachtingen werden niet ingelost. Een overgare vis visbereiding - lang geleden dat ik dat nog heb meegemaakt - en vervolgens 2 echt wel lekkere vleesbereidingen ( enerzijds Mechelse koekoek en anderzijds kalfsbereidingen) die helaas niet warm genoeg ( dwz lauw) geserveerd werden. Een enthousiaste bediening, je moet het maar doen om zoveel gasten met de glimlach blijven bedienen, dat wel… maar voor dit prijskaartje moet het beter ( lees : juiste gaarheid en lekker warm geserveerd), jammer, want we hadden er echt zin in

Dit restaurant was de laatste etappe op een vierdaagse culinaire trip door dit deel van Nederland. Helaas was het een beetje een anti-climax. Er heerst in dit etablissement een geforceerd hiep hiep hoera sfeertje wat echter niet kan worden waargemaakt op het bord. Wellicht komt dat door het teveel aan couverts en tekort aan personeel. Drie gerechten waren niet meer op temperatuur toen ze bij ons aankwamen, de heilbot was gewoon platgekookt. Fouten die op dit niveau uiteraard niet kunnen, zeker als je pretendeert sterrenwaardig te zijn. Het niveau van de gerechten was wisselend, 2 vleesgerechten waren lekker, het vegetarische gerecht beneden alle peil. Als ik er bijreken dat ons een oester op het einde werd aangerekend zonder dat dit was aangekondigd moet ik helaas een onvoldoende geven.

Had a really fantastic evening. Service really great, very nice waitress and the food just fantastic. Wines were not very special but the food is really great. Food was more surprising than some Michelin restaurants. Highly recommended! You must like salt.

Delicious food and service was top notch. Was pushed a little too hard on supplements and drinks for the beauty, but it didn't detract from the experience!

Prima gegeten bij The Lemon Tree. Stuk voor stuk heerlijke en verzorgde gerechten. Jammer alleen dat ze het nodig vonden om EUR 35,80 in rekening te brengen voor twee kleine glaasjes champagne als aperitief. Dat slaat echt nergens op. Reden om dit restaurant voortaan over te slaan…
