The Papeneiland Café in Jordaan

Service was really slow, our apply pie never came. We were earlier than other customers, and waited till all the customers were served including a few rounds of customers. Reminded the staff to be told that it will come but it never did.

The draft beer was great. Amstel and ostrich white beer. It paired well with the croquettes and was delicious. There's an underground passage used by hidden Christians, which we were also allowed to see. (Visited evening, June 8, 2026)

The owner was very friendly and nice to us. I can say I had one of the best apple pies ever at this place and will definitely come back. Best pie best customer experience.

The cake was the worst we had in Amsterdam, soggy, cold and just without flavour, and before trying it they asked to leave a 5 star review on Google. Two out of the three cashiers were super unfriendly, when we went to pay he put the cost in the TPV without even asking if we had card or cash, when we said with cash, he said he couldn't cancel it. After paying I explained to him that he has an X red button to cancel it, to which he said "I know, I know a lot of things". I think what he doesn't know is he has rude customer service and bad manners, apart from food you can get anywhere else for better quality and same price. The only reason we came was the apple pie and it wasn't even hot. Hope this goes bankrupt, but they take advantage of being at a touristy place.

The BEST bitterballen and apple pie in the city! I tried the bitterballen and apple pie at Winkel 43. This place is so much better! The bitterballen is super crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The apple pie had lots of currants and spices and was not overly sweet at all. I ate every single morsel!

This is the place to go for apple pie when in Amsterdam. It truly is the best apple pie I’ve had, a huge portion, served with whipped cream, it’s just absolutely delicious. The cafe is also beautifully decorated, which makes the whole experience even nicer. Everything ties together perfectly for a cozy and memorable stop in Amsterdam. The servers are also extremely friendly. An absolute must-visit if you’re looking for the best apple pie in the city.

This is one of our favorite spots in Amsterdam…the outside seating is usually full but if you’re lucky to get a spot it’s so worth it (but the inside is great too!) the staff are very friendly and the service is great but you really need to try their apple pie, it’s easily the best I’ve had in Amsterdam!

The apple pie is good, but the place is overcrowded and the service is disgusting, people crammed together like pigs. The toilets are filthy.

Terrible service. Rude waitresses who didn’t want to be there and made customers feel like an inconvenience. Poor service spoiled the good apple pie.

Really glad we found this place. The food and prices were both good. We ordered the fried chicken, the bitterballen, the meatball sandwich and, of course, the apple pie. Fried chicken is on the better side of what you would expect for a pub Bitterballen...yummm The meatball sandwich was like a mini sub sandwich with a lighter mustard sauce served in the side. The apple pie was awesome 👍

Heard that this was one of the best places for Dutch Apple Pie in the city and it did not disappoint. Very helpful and friendly staff and a beautiful building right by the canals with terrace seating. We had some delicious Amstel beer with our pie and it was the perfect afternoon. The crust was incredible and big apple pieces, make sure to get it with whipped cream too since they put a great amount on the plate!

This place is packed. Half locals, half tourists. The quality of staff is mixed. Being local but expatriated, I find the place evidence of the tension between a historically tolerant but quietly elitist culture and the forces of global wealth and cosplay pushing it over the edge. I don’t like being on the receiving end of this equation, but I get it. I just wish they’d stop licking their fingers when buttering the bread and smoking in the kitchen next to the precut pie slices. This seems par here, though. When in Rome, try and appreciate the beauty of an empire while watching its slow erasure. Cool old building.

Good drinks but service was lacking. Elderly looking male bartender was quite rude, abrupt and a bit dismissive. My partner was looking at the menu and was looking up the beers and after mentioning he was looking for a local beer, he asked for a taster (which is a common thing in pubs) the bartender refused and said "have you never had a beer before?" Then he proceeded to pour a beer which had a lot of head- asked him if he could top it up to which he basically overflowed the glass, made a mess and carelelessly sloshed it back to us and gave it back with same head...

What an amazing restaurant. Originally constructed in a 1600s this is a true original brown bar. Everybody said that you should skip winkle 43 and come here for their Dutch apple pie. What a great experience.!

Their apple pie was amazing, it was recommended by our Airbnb host. Crunchy pie crust, filled with apples. It’s a massive slice, I’d suggest sharing with a friend! We tried another apple pie near by as this wasn’t open when we wanted apple pie, but this was definitely the better place for it!

The pub was incredibly chaotic. The apple pie was enormous, but the pastry wasn't particularly soft. There was a snail in the mint tea.

An apple pie shop recommended by a local. Neither the pie nor the cream was too sweet, so I could eat it without getting tired of the taste. It has plenty of apple pieces inside, and the coffee is delicious. They also sell tea.

I would have liked to come in for a drink, but apparently they enjoy making fun of their customers. When I asked if it was possible to have a drink, even though the bar was quite busy, a simple "yes or no" would have taken less time than casually throwing in a "what do you think?"

Very tasty apple pie, or more correctly, apples with pie :) The mint tea is incredible, looks are deceiving, I thought they just put mint with a needle in a glass and poured hot water, BUT NO, everything was just incredibly delicious We were greeted very pleasantly, the guy immediately paid attention to us and helped us choose a place, everything was brought literally in 3 minutes There is a small but, although we had a very pleasant stay, there is a lot of dust in the establishment on the decorations and in principle people do not touch there

Excellent apple tart in an original setting

A café in a typical old Amsterdam house... We enjoyed a homemade apple tart—more of an apple pie, really! Delicious! The slices are quite large, so I recommend sharing one between two people. The upstairs dining room is lovely, and the outdoor tables by the canal are very pleasant when the sun is shining! A truly authentic spot not to be missed!

Came here for the apple pie and whipped cream on the recommendation of a hotel concierge and we’re not disappointed. We added a toastie and some bitterballen and then a beer to round out our stay. All excellent. It was a busy Friday evening and the drinks were flowing but the staff worked hard to keep us happy. Like lots of small places in Amsterdam, it isn’t fancy but the food and drink, along with the friendly and helpful service, make these places a highlight of this tourist’s visit. Go and have some fun at this lively cafe. Fortunate to have visited again, this time on Kings Day 2026. While it looked like just beer and drink service when I asked the bartender if they were serving apple pie, he replied “of course.” And it was every bit as good as it had been in 2023. Fun place with nice folks.

We visited this place as four girls during our Amsterdam trip to try their famous apple pie. The café was very crowded, but the staff member who greeted us immediately showed us an empty table upstairs. Since one of my friends didn’t want to try anything, the three of us ordered two apple pies to share so we could also taste other desserts. We weren’t planning to stay long anyway, as the place is quite small. In the middle of the crowd, the man who seemed to be the owner suddenly came up to us and shouted, “So you’re four people eating only two pies?” At first we thought he was being sarcastic, but it was simply rude. While we were still trying to understand if he was joking, the woman who had seated us came over with the pos machine, clearly wanting us to pay and leave. They basically didn’t like our order and asked us to pay right away. I told her that if they had mentioned at the beginning that we needed to order more due to the crowd, we would have happily done so. We paid quickly and left, and as we were walking out, we even heard them say “internationals ” behind us. Although the apple pie was delicious, their attitude completely ruined the experience. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

A lively, local atmosphere with lots of regulars. A very friendly welcome. Since it's small, you share a table with strangers, which is nice. The tart is fantastic. In short, a place to visit if you want good, authentic food!

There's nothing left to say: the apple pie was absolutely special. Soft, fragrant, and with that authentic flavor that makes it truly unique. It deserves all its popularity! The entire place is very cute; if you're lucky, you'll find a seat. If you have the chance, try it: you won't regret it!

We had high expectations after looking at a very positive review. Sadly the place is more like a run down pub with limited seats on the ground floor. When we asked for a pork dish, we got the mixed plate that had liver and beef tartar. Luckily we asked before eating. There is one thing though that is superb, and that is the apple pie. Worth a visit

Horrible service and rude staff! For 40 mins, we tried ordering through different staff but to no avail, while others were getting their Apple pie. When we confronted the staff, we were told there was a “minimum order” (which they did not mention before). And when we tried to fulfil the order requirements, we were told they weren’t “obligated to serve us”. It is a great disappointment as we were really looking forward to this! :(

Lovely atmosphere and decor, but the “famous apple pie” was definitely not in the top 10 I’ve ever eaten. The coffee was tasty and the lovely woman and man working there were very accommodating, but very slow on preparing just 2 coffees and an apple pie on a day with just 4 people in the store. I will come back for just a coffee though

The apple pie itself wasn't bad, but the service was not good at all. Me and my friend ordered two apple pies, one beer and one coffee, and we were sitting upstairs. At some point some women came upstairs, probably tourists, and since we had space on our bench and table we offered them to sit with us and made some space. At some point a man who was working in the cafe came upstairs to take an order and he told us to squeeze ourselves more so the three ladies can actually have more space to sit with us. I really don't find it a nice way to talk to your guests. Even though we tried to be polite and offer the seat by ourselves, I believe that he could have at least asked us if we are okay with making more space instead of demanding us just to squeeze ourselves more (despite the fact that we offered this by ourselves to the ladies). I found it really disrespectful. I would not come here again as the waiter was very rude!

Best apple pie in-town bar none - perfectly spiced and seasoned, and the apples are cooked through just right with a tiny bit of crunch still. Absolutely mind-blowing; I wouldn't bother with other establishments around the area that serve the Dutch apple pie.

Tired the apple tart it was amazing 10/10. The only problem I came at Saturday night was very busy that I ate while standing outside. Next time nead to pick a better time to enjoy the tart.

This place was a big letdown all because of the service. I had to leave my table and go to the bar to get any drinks, and was told to wait at my table for drinks, only to wait another 15 minutes. After waiting 20 minutes for apple pie, I went to the bar and asked to just close my tab as I had waited long enough.

A Timeless Amsterdam Treasure! I stumbled upon this cozy canalside café and it instantly became one of my favorite spots in Amsterdam. The place has that authentic “brown café” charm, warm, welcoming, and full of character. Sitting by the canal, watching the endless flow of bikes go by, felt like being part of the city’s rhythm itself. But the highlight? The Dutch apple pie! Easily the best I’ve ever had in my life! Perfectly spiced, with a buttery crust and just the right amount of sweetness. I’m still thinking about it! The staff were friendly, the atmosphere truly local, and the history in every corner adds so much soul to the experience. If you visit Amsterdam, this café is a must. I’ll definitely come back for another slice!
