Venus & Adonis in Jordaan

Lovely french restaurant on the canal tucked just out of the tourist traffic. We stopped in and had a perfect Sunday lunch. We were able to get the table in the large window overlooking the canal, which added a little extra to the experience. Joyce the restauranteur is attentive and has excellent attention to detail. The french wine list is varied and interesting. The trout rillete and escargot were perfect. Also, the little gem salad is hiding on the menu, but don’t forget to add this! Looking forward to coming back for dinner.

Very cheeky and smart waitress that should grow up and work on her manners. Fancy clothes and an over pretentious attitude combined with a rude and ignorant behaviour is very far from the class that this person wrongly believe to possess

Canal side charm with high end food experience. Amazing wine and superb service. Ordered the scallops, veal tartare and escargot. Finished with the cheese plate. Recommend everything. One of our best food experiences in Amsterdam.

Service was go great! Very friendly. I had forgotten my sunglasses at the restaurant and had left (I was far down the road). The server had come down the road to find me to give to me. This capped off a great experience. A+!!

Enjoying a meal in an atmospheric French bistro on the Amsterdam canals, in the heart of the Jordaan What a fantastic surprise the new menu is! As a vegetarian, I felt truly spoiled by the surprising and refined choices. We enjoyed the broad beans, beets, tartelette, and mushroom pâté – each one beautifully presented and prepared with great care. The broad beans with fennel, yogurt, pea cream, and mint were deliciously fresh and perfectly balanced. The beets with miso beurre blanc and grapes were an absolute highlight: the creamy, buttery sauce acquired a beautiful deep umami flavor thanks to the miso, which paired perfectly with the sweet beet and fresh grapes. The tartelette with red onion and aged Stolwijker cheese was rich and full of flavor, while the mushroom pâté on brioche with Madeira and confit shallot was a delicious, refined vegetarian classic. The atmosphere made the experience complete. We sat at a table for two by the window, overlooking the stunning Amsterdam canal houses. As the boats sailed past peacefully and the city unfolded before us, we enjoyed a relaxed lunch in a warm and intimate atmosphere. The service was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and hospitable. You immediately feel welcome and notice that the work is done with passion and care. A French bistro-wine bar where everything is just right: a beautiful new menu, refined vegetarian dishes, a magnificent view, and service that makes you want to come back. Hats off to Chef Michael! Highly recommended in the Jordaan!

The V&A in Amsterdam is highly recommended. Beautiful location on the Prinsengracht (Jordaan) and friendly staff. The scallops in beurre noisette are a favorite.

We were pleasantly surprised by the dishes. It felt as if we had landed in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Beautifully presented dishes, where everything was perfectly balanced. Delicious wines were served alongside, and we were served in a friendly manner by the staff. Highly recommended!

The place for a cozy and truly delicious (French) meal. The people, the ambiance, a good glass of wine—this place has it all.

We ended up at V&A through word of mouth and are glad we went. We started with champagne, oysters, and gougères, and then shared various dishes, including the veal tartare, scallops, and the pithivier. Everything was well-seasoned and beautifully presented. What I particularly liked was the combination of an extensive wine list and staff who actually knew a thing or two about it. As a result, you don't have to spend hours searching for a wine yourself. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, making it easy to stay longer than planned. We will definitely be back.

This weekend we had dinner at V&A bar bistro and it was delicious! The restaurant looks sleek and atmospheric, and the food was very good! We had, among other things, a brioche with foie gras and eel. Normally I'm not such a fan of eel, but this combination was fantastic! And of course, there had to be dessert, which consisted of strawberry, mascarpone, and a tasty crumble. Definitely worth a visit!

Last week, I dined at V&A Bistro in the Jordaan for the first time since the new menu was introduced, and I was genuinely pleasantly surprised. The hostess and new chef create a truly authentic atmosphere. The dishes still retain the accessibility of a French bistro, but have clearly become more refined and creative. The brioche with mushroom pâté was an absolute favorite for me. The slogan “Bistronomie d’Amsterdam” is well-deserved. Additionally, they have an extensive wine list with many interesting choices by the glass and bottle. We started the evening with an apéritif cocktail and then switched to wine, where the staff provided good advice without being pushy. For anyone looking for a French bistro and wine bar in Amsterdam, and especially in the Jordaan, V&A Bistro is highly recommended. We will be back soon to sample more of the new menu.

Lovely French bistro in the Jordaan with a delightful terrace by the canal! We thoroughly enjoyed the cote de boeuf. The wine list deserves a special mention. On the recommendation of the waiter, we chose a 2019 Rioja Crianza; it had exactly the right balance between fruit, spices, and refined oak aging and was a perfect match for the cote de boeuf. Highly recommended!

Had a great evening at V&A Bar Bistro! Nice French bistro, beautiful spot on the canal in the Jordaan. Good atmosphere, pleasantly busy but not rushed. Had a wonderful time at V&A again last night! I’ve been coming here for years and it feels like a party every single time. The atmosphere is top-notch, the staff is super friendly and welcoming, and you can tell in everything that they run their business with love. Good wines, delicious cocktails, and above all, incredibly tasty food. This is the perfect place for French classics. The oeuf mayo, gougères, and vegetarian mushroom pâté on toast were pure delights, and there was much more delicious food besides. It’s the kind of place where you actually always end up staying just a little longer than planned. Highly recommended!

Had a delicious meal at V&A Bistronomie! A French bistro through and through; they are crazy about French cuisine and definitely know what they are doing. The service is good, they know what they are talking about, a great wine list, and spot on with their recommendations. I say go for it if you are in the Jordaan, because wow, it is such a lovely place to sit, top atmosphere. The escargots, the oysters, the rillette—it is all meant to be shared, but actually, you don't want to. It is all really tasty, and then that sea bream! You never want to leave.

We had a delicious meal, unexpectedly as we ended up here by chance. We ate delicious oysters, oeufs, and more. The wine paired perfectly with it too. A nice atmosphere and friendly service. We will definitely be back! Thanks for the lovely evening 🩷

Excellent service and Great drink selection

We happened to be there on a relatively quiet weeknight, which meant we got to chat quite a bit with the bartender, who was also our waiter. That turned out to be a lot of fun, plus he helped us figure out what to order. And the meal was so so good! Those escargots and scallops, and the bread… I could go on and on, naming every dish, but I’ll stop there. Short version: I’m so glad we went. It was one of our favorite meals in Amsterdam, which is saying a lot, because that city has crazy good food.

Hands down our favorite restaurant in Amsterdam and a great way to celebrate our engagement. We’re still dreaming about the scallop appetizer and the fish entree for two. The food and service was so good that we bought the whole kitchen staff around of beers. Highly recommend!!! Looking forward to coming back when we’re in AMS next.

Service was too slow. We were there by 19:20, dinner served at 21:30. They forgot one of the drinks, had to remind them, one of the fries came so late. Staff was nice but the food, the menu, environment nothing special.

One of these random walk in’s where you sit at the bar and have best night ever! Small menu but delicious. Friday night and fully booked so we ate bar snacks sat at the counter, soaking in the atmosphere. The bar man was so welcoming and friendly and made everyone his signature cocktail with compliments. A very memorable night, bedankt! 🙏🏽

We visited this restaurant on Valentine’s Day. The evening started quite well – we were given a table with a view of the street, which was an interesting touch and created a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, that’s where the positive impressions ended. Throughout the entire evening, waiters kept walking right behind our backs, which was very uncomfortable. There was visible chaos behind the bar – staff were constantly tripping over something, and the phone was ringing nonstop right next to us. Taking reservation calls near our table completely disrupted our conversation and ruined the atmosphere. As for the food – it was very mediocre. For the starter, we ordered duck with a potato gratin, and that dish was actually good – the only strong point of the evening. Unfortunately, the main course was very disappointing. I ordered cod – the fish was boiled on some vegetables and completely tasteless. Both the appearance and the flavor resembled hospital food. For dessert, the menu listed apple crème brûlée, but what we received was sliced apple with burnt sugar on top and a dollop of whipped cream. It looked as if it had been thrown together at the last minute, without any creativity or attention to detail. The quality-to-price ratio is unfortunately a huge gap. The only positive (2+) goes to the Valentine’s chocolate.

How this place has such high ratings is beyond me. The service is kind and friendly and the location is good but the food is mediocre at best. I’ve had similar dishes on a business class flight with Air France and that is not a compliment. Go across the canal to Cafe Verlan instead

Its a very nice and cozy restaurant. But unfortunately we had a bad experience because of service issues. Our main dish came around 2,5 hours after we ordered. :( and tables are too close to each other

The kind of place to relax and let the wonderful experience wash away the stresses of the day. Service was the star. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, with interesting insights into the natural wines on offer. We had lovely bouillabaisse and a spectacular dark chocolate terrine glazed with some cherries and flavoured with a touch of sea salt. Highly recommended.

Delicious food and super nice service

The food we got was really tasty, we chose the cote de boeuf fo two people at €88, however- the portion size was pitiful. The meat was enough, but the sides were barely enough for one rather than two- since these are the least expensive part of the meal it makes no sense as to why you wouldn’t provide enough to fulfil two people. The meat was also a little cold, forgivable because it was very tasty. There was a dog in the restaurant which yapped throughout the meal which definitely took away from the overall experience.

The service was incredibly slow. We waited half an hour, even though there were only three tables. The Pinot Noir was fermented, and the steak tartare was bland. The lunch menu was very limited. We were very disappointed.

We stumbled on this restaurant for dinner and got a table for 2 without a reservation. It was delicious and the environment was amazing! We walked in around 6:15 and it was empty, but by the time we left, it had filled up quite a bit. We ordered the pork belly, fries, and the bouillabaisse.

Stumbled upon Venus & Adonis and loved it — cozy spot with tasty French bites and excellent wines by the glass. Warm atmosphere, friendly service, and perfect for a spontaneous lunch, near the crowds, but you couldn’t feel it at all ! Little oasis!

Good service with some very good food. The bouillabaisse was a miss for us - parts were undercooked, bone in the fish, flavor so-so. But the mussels were very good.

Delightful Monday night meal. Highlights include the lone person manning the restaurant who tended to all tables with a great attitude and full confidence in the menu and wine list. From the small plates to seafood entrees nothing disappointed. We will definitely return on our next stay at the Pulitzer.

What a fantastic restaurant. Has a really great atmosphere and must be amazing on a cold winters night. The food was lovely, we had the Chateaubriand, which was cooked to perfection, as we're the fries and lettuce. The wine was really nice and the service was wonderful. The menu seems to have thinned out a bit, at least this time there's no separation between "Venus" and "Adonis." Nevertheless, the offerings are extremely delicious and highly recommended.

I dined at your place tonight with American business partners. Apologies for the audible enthusiasm from us. It was delicious, both the ambiance and the food. Beautiful restaurant, good food, excellent service. Unfortunately, the pork belly I had was a bit disappointing, but the side dishes—eggplant, among other things—were very tasty and good. I give the pork belly a 6, everything around it an 8, the steak my table companions shared and which I tasted an 8.5, and the fries and the waiter with the curly hair a 9.5. (You know who you are.) As soon as I'm rich, or when I'm treated again, I'll definitely be back.

Atmosphere an interior was nice. The rest, unfortunately, was not good at all. We were waiting for the food for more than an hour. When we finally got "pork belly" it appears to be pure fat, literally. I understand that pork belly could go with far for jusiness, but this one almost didn't have meat, only fat with no side dish. Steak was mediocre. It is defenetly not worth the price

I had a dinner tonight at Venus & Adonis restaurant in the area of the 9 streets in Amsterdam. I had to compromise and seat downstaris as even though I booked a table the guy who welcomed me said that the main (street level) area is booked. I was the 1st guest that was seated downstairs and was served by a lady. The only one in the shift with the other waiter I've mentionef. She asked if I want water and I said I want simple tap water. It took about 20-30 min to get my starter which was Salsify with smoked almonds - you get exactly 3 roots of vegetale (12€), my main course arrived 30 min later and was Redfish with mousseline, leek bisque (28€). The fish wasn't seassoned at all and was tasteless, and there wasn't any salt & pepper mills on my table. As the lady waiter went off to serve other tables in the main upstsires area, and I want to eat my dish as it was getting cold, I went to the next empty table, took the peper mill but it was emty, I had no choice and asked 2 ladies that were sitting next to my table if I can take their salt & pepper mills which were empty too. The lady waiter came back to my table and I told her that I nead seasoning. She took the empty pepper mill and served other tables instead of taking care about me. It took her a good few minutes later to bring a pepper & salt mill but my dish was already cold. When I finished I asked for the bill and it took good few minutes again to get it. To my surprise they charged me 3 € for "watter service"and when I asked why (as I asked for tap water and she didn't mention they will charge me) she answered we charge for "filltered water"... My overall experiense wasn't good at all. I would not go back or recommand this restaurant at all. Service was slow, not attentive, and overall you don't get value for your money.

A fantastic restaurant, right in the heart of the Jordaan district. We got off to a great start; when we asked for wine recommendations, we were given a really good service. The result: a delicious Tempranillo. The starters arrived quickly and looked as delicious as they tasted. The chef made a quick stop by our table, and we were even able to order our main courses from him: pointed cabbage with vadouvan sauce and chicken thigh. The atmosphere is super cozy, warm, and friendly. Highly recommended!

Echt een 10!! Als je van lekker eten houd, moet je hier naartoe. De chef maakt alles zelf, onwijs leuke uitleg gekregen over de gerechten en de liefde en passie, proef je terug in de gerechten. Ook de bediening is super, goede adviezen gekregen over de wijnen en een gezellige sfeer. Wij hadden bar bites om te delen als vooraf, als hoofdgerecht de cote de Boeuf en steak tartaar en als dessert de kaas en een kersen taartje. Echt onwijs genoten, de kwaliteit van het eten was super.

We had a wonderful experience here for dinner. We were able to sit outside, which was nice since it was a warm day and it was a bit warm inside. We tried nearly all of the small plates, and every one of them was great. The gougeres, mackerel rillette, and brioche crayfish were standouts. The servers were great - fun and friendly. Overall a great meal and experience!

Overall a good meal, but soured by the fact they clearly have a model to refuse service to customers they don’t think will fit with their look and feel, and also waaaay over charging for water. I wouldn’t go back and would suggest you find somewhere else.

Had our first dinner in Amsterdam at this lovely restaurant. Simple, unpretentious, delicious food. Service was just right from beginning to end. We made reservations for 6pm and we were able to decide where we wanted to sit. For couples, the corner seating right up front is the perfect balance between indoor-outdoor. It felt far away from all the other diners; love the open window for people watching. 😊

All was fine and the atmosphere at the venue was pleasant, but unfortunately, I experienced a serious issue with the food. I was served clearly undercooked chicken (photo attached). When I politely pointed this out to the staff, they insisted that the pink color was just “juice” and that the chicken was meant to look that way. No action was taken. For reference, properly cooked chicken should be fully opaque and white throughout. Pink or translucent meat, especially near the bone, usually means it hasn’t reached a safe temperature — and that’s not safe for consumption. I hope this important issue is addressed by the kitchen, as food safety should always come first.

A beautiful gem in the heart of Amsterdam! We stumbled upon Venus & Adonis Corner by accident, and what a wonderful surprise it was! This bistro is beautifully designed and so stylish—it’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city. The food and wine were excellent, the view is stunning, and the service was warm and attentive. We’ll definitely be coming back on purpose next time!

Our must-eat at restaurant every time we are in Amsterdam. The staff were very kind, and the food and drinks were wonderful! I wish the portion sizes were a bit larger for the price, but definitely quality over quantity! Can’t wait to come back again.

Solid unassuming vibe canal side in a little quieter section of Amsterdam. Got a feeling there were a lot of neighborhood customers. The food surprised us in a good way as the menu is off the beaten track for us. But that's why we travel. A good experience, the wine list was excellent the service and attention as well. Dessert was off the hook. We had a great table with a great view. Saw many check the menu out then chicken out - don't be stuck in your comfort zone. It was a good flavorful meal and experience.

La comida era terrible y muy caro para lo que era, el servicio era bastante descuidado. Pedí un plato de repollo a la parrilla - pensé que sería una interesante toma por 26 € - pero no - una minúscula cuña de repollo colocado en una sartén durante unos minutos para que no sea totalmente crujiente. Y luego unas rodajas de repollo crudo con literalmente un anacardo en la parte superior. . ¡Nada de sabor! El filete por 86 € se supone que son 700 gramos pero no te dicen que la mitad del peso es un hueso. Mal cocinado y muy masticable, vino con un pequeño tazón de papas fritas de calidad inferior y mini ensalada verde. El pan era dos rebanadas con una mantequilla de hierbas que sabía asqueroso. Eran 35 C en el restaurante - ¿no fue su culpa que fuera un día caluroso, pero cómo esperaban que la gente se sentara allí y comiera sin aire? Gastamos 150 € para una mala comida en general. ¡Muy decepcionante!

I come to Amsterdam for work often and it's somewhat overwhelming the options for food / drinks. I stumbled upon Venus and Adonis as I was walking back to my hotel and stopped in for a glass of wine. I ended up staying for dinner and it was an incredible experience My server Marije was really awesome, i could have swore she was English but overheard her saying she was born and raised in Amsterdam. She was very accommodating when I asked if they had any gamay by the glass options, and also paired a glass of riesling to the redfish I had. I would absolutely recommend this place. They have indoor and outdoor seating and the vibe is 10/10.

It's listed on Google as a steakhouse. But unfortunately, it isn't. We didn't eat anything and left. The staff apologized for the misunderstanding.

Food was fine, but seems more exclusive on the menu than it was, dishes quite simple. Service good, but clearly put you under pressure in terms of time. And that is also my biggest negative point: because there are 2 bookings per table per evening, at a certain point you are really asked to leave the table. There is definitely no after-dinner chat, at least with early bookings.

We wandered in on a rainy evening and was welcomed by the staff! We were pleasantly surprised by the food and attention to detail. A really lovely restaurant!

nice place, nice place. good service, terrible acoustics. Too bad you don't get bread with a starter (pulpo terrine) for 16 euros. If you ask for a piece, it is on the bill for 6 euros. Also, the liver in the fois gras eclaire was so minimal and whipped up that the taste of white chocolate dominated. Still a tasty dish. With poulet chasseur we expected a tasty stew with lots of tarragon. Not a reheated chicken leg. The cheese puffs should never be off the menu again! Not only because they are delicious but also because they provide a wonderful smell all evening when served to neighbors.

It's a solid place with solid food (nothing exceptional), and for that it is overpriced. I also suffered from 3 young Americans that were sitting on the bar and were very loud. Seems like the staff enjoyed it, as they became vocal with them, This is a place if you are near by but not a destination.

Ich war vor einer Woche im Venus & Adonis. Optisch ist das Restaurant sehr schön mit kleiner Location am Prinsengracht. Als ich mich reinsetzte bemerkte ich jedoch direkt nicht entfernte Rotweinflecken in runder Form von Weingläsern auf meinem Holztisch. Das irritierte mich ein wenig, da das Restaurant anfangs auf mich einen seriösen Eindruck gemacht hatte. Ich bestellte den Roodbaars mit einem Glas Sauvignon Blanc. Als mir die Dame den Wein brachte, war das Glas nicht einmal halb gefüllt! Ich fand diesen Service extremst peinlich für das Restaurant als auch wirklich sehr geizig. Mit Klasse hatte dieser Service nichts zutun. Der Hauptgang hatte auch gar keinen richtigen side Dish außer einem mini Pommes Pavé zu einem überhöhten Preis! Wenigstens war der Fisch frisch und gut zubereitet gewesen. Im großen und ganzen ziemlich enttäuschend. Die Bedienung war auch nicht gerade die zuvorkommendste und ziemlich arrogant. Was mich auch irritiert hat, waren französisch beschriebene Gerichte auf der Karte, die mit französischem Essen überhaupt nichts zutun haben. Es ist generell sehr schwierig in Amsterdam vernünftig zu essen. Ich gebe mein Geld lieber in Paris aus.

I was at Venus & Adonis a week ago. The restaurant is visually very nice, with a small location on the Prinsengracht. However, when I sat down, I immediately noticed unremoved red wine stains in the shape of round wine glasses on my wooden table. This irritated me a bit, as the restaurant had initially made a serious impression on me. I ordered the Roodbaars with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. When the lady brought me the wine, the glass wasn't even half full! I found this service extremely embarrassing for the restaurant, as well as truly stingy. This service had nothing to do with class. The main course didn't even have a proper side dish, except for a mini pommes pavé at an inflated price! At least the fish was fresh and well-prepared. Overall, it was quite disappointing. The service wasn't exactly the most attentive and quite arrogant. What also irritated me were the dishes on the menu described in French, which had absolutely nothing to do with French food. It's generally very difficult to find decent food in Amsterdam. I prefer to spend my money in Paris.

Delicious classic menu in beautiful surroundings with laid back feel. Service was excellent and pleasant chats with the staff.

Stopped in for a drink at the bar before dinner elsewhere. Very friendly and welcoming and drinks were great.
