Zaalig in Wijk 00 Centrum

I went to this lovely eatery on August 1st. The high tea was definitely a success, thank you. My friend was also satisfied, and so was I. We had a delicious meal.

Writing a review after having eaten there a month ago, because I still get angry when I think back on it. The owner is a surly, stingy man. We had lunch, dinner, and drinks, but we were not allowed tap water afterwards. The reason given was that you can get a glass of tap water with an order, but if you don't order anything else, you don't get anything. Not even if you didn't get water before. On top of that, the owner was rude and made it my problem. I ended up grabbing a glass myself and refilling it at the sink in the toilet. Otherwise, the staff is fine, the food is okay, though a bit pricey for what you get. But in any case, I will never go back there again. Response to the owner's message: We spent over €100 in total. We had 4 lunch dishes and at least 10 drinks. During the last round, three of us wanted an extra drink and a glass of water, but the fourth only wanted water. So she didn't get it. Pretty low of the owner to lie about his stinginess.

Although the place is decent, I find it obscene that we have to argue with the owner about getting a glass of tap water. Especially in a country where the tap water is potable, and a BASIC human right. And don't get me wrong, this is not a case of not wanting to order from the menu and getting off cheap with just water, this is a case of having at least two rounds of drinks each in a party of four, and lunch for everyone, and in the end most of us got coffee. This is not the behaviour of a decent human being.

I was a bit hesitant given some bad reviews, but I enjoyed it. We ate here with six people and all the dishes were tasty. A bit pricey, though, but that is the Netherlands, after all. A cozy, evening-long dinner in a pleasant ambiance.

This is a very nice place to relax and have a bite to eat, nice seating area and a nice location to watch the world go by, the food was amazing and full of flavour, good portion size for a decent price definitely worth the money, food was spot on, I had the Korean BBQ burger (Image is below) came with a side of fries and Prawn Crackers everything was really nice, the staff are friendly and they even have an English menu which is helpful for those who dont speak or read dutch, you dont see that much so its nice to see that this place has thought about doing it, would definitely recommend! 😋

Super nice place to eat and drink!

Went out for dinner Sunday evening; very polite and good staff. They deserve 5 stars. The charcuterie board looked promising, the bread was delicious, the appetizers were bland, and the sauces tasteless. The food is certainly bad for the price. €32 for a bad steak that wasn't cooked properly and was lying on the mashed potatoes, with the juices from the steak leaking onto it. Mashed potatoes tasteless, vegetables.....6 pieces of something that looked like carrots and bell peppers. The salmon was soggy, probably from the freezer. The only tasty thing was the chicken satay. The fries were well-fried. A shame, the chef should learn more about preparing meat/fish. Not recommended. With a drink, starter, and meal €70 pp.

We were sitting outside at first, felt chilly, and wanted to go inside for dessert. There was a young man there who was incredibly pushy and paid absolutely no attention. We ended up asking for the menu ourselves, and then he did pay attention. The food itself was fine. The burger we ordered was not medium rare.

It's been a few months now, but what a lovely and cozy place; I had a drink here. Friendly staff and the atmosphere is perfect.

I went to eat here last week. It is a very nice place in itself, with a cozy terrace in the center of Schiedam. I also have nothing but good things to say about the service: the food arrived reasonably quickly and the staff are nice people. The price-quality ratio, however, is absolutely skewed. Charging €23 or €24 for a satay platter with just one satay stick, a small plate of fries, and some vegetables is unjustifiable. €23 for a simple salad with goat cheese is also way too much money. If it were high-quality food, you could explain such a price. But this is just fine, normal food. A chicken satay that isn't anything special should never cost this much. Nice place and good service, but the prices are really grossly exaggerated for what you get on your plate. I come here often for a drink but had never been for the food before. I will keep coming, but I will skip the food from now on.

The menu stated that the meal included a fresh salad, but what we received was hardly a salad at all—just half a cherry tomato, half a slice of cucumber, and a small amount of lettuce, without any dressing. Calling this a “fresh salad” is quite misleading. After the meal, we ordered coffee and had to remind the staff three times before it was finally served. To their credit, they apologized and did not charge us for the coffee, which we appreciated. However, the long wait and repeated reminders did not make for a pleasant experience. While the food itself was good, the portions were relatively small for the price. Combined with the slow service and the disappointing “included salad,” the overall value for money was not great.

Nice place with friendly staff. Hygiene rules are a bit difficult for them. Staff dropped a tub of butter on the floor and put it back on my plate.

Small, cozy, pleasant, and good food and drinks

The food here was very standard/mid. The type of food where you get fries with every meal. I had the goat cheese salad and it was literally iceberg lettuce + goat cheese + a single sad cucumber slice. My friend had a plate of overcooked noodles with the pork belly. The fries were good, the server was nice and the setting was decent. If it was cheap you wouldn’t hear me complain. But it was low-key expensive. Go here for drinks or a snack, skip dinner.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lovely mamma lunch at Zaalig in Schiedam! The most important thing was my mother's reaction to this special lunch. She couldn't stop talking about it. She found it so delicious, fun, and cozy. Also, nothing but praise for the staff and the atmosphere and decor of the Zaalig Room.

Eaten the best Hawaiian Toastie ever on a sunny terrace; right down to the dressing on the salad was perfect. Compliments to the Chef.

The food was bad. We had a table of 9 people. Dishes were served to the wrong people. The salmon was like rubber. The Asian satay was tough and tasteless. The service was friendly, but very slow, and the main course and desserts were not served at the same time. When you look at the prices, it is outrageous that they dare to charge this much.

Very nice little restaurant, where you sit comfortably, pleasant service, and tasty food. As you would expect in a bistro, though on the pricey side (but where isn't that these days). However, a carafe of water could not be served; instead, we received very small glasses of water. Why not just a carafe of tap water? We are quite willing to pay for that, but this was a bit strange.... Therefore, 2 stars for the service; it certainly wasn't the staff's fault, they are simply implementing policy.

Had dinner at Zaalig prior to the 2026 performance of the St Matthew Passion in the nearby St. John's Church. Attractive menu, pleasant service, and excellent catering to quick eaters given the early entry to the church. 5 stars!

Very expensive! Small dishes, quality and taste okay.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The guinea fowl was so small that I only took a break every now and then, and there was so little rice that I couldn't find it. Very small portions! And that for €88! If the food were good, €88 wouldn't be expensive at all, but this was. Very disappointing. The guinea fowl was overcooked and didn't taste entirely fresh.

Had lunch with my son. Cozy interior, friendly and fast service. Good menu. The carpaccio sandwich was excellent. The tasting menu included a nice variety of items. But I was especially impressed with the pear tart; it was delicious! We'll definitely be back!

Had a coffee here today... After waiting a bit, I placed an order... other customers walked out because no one came to take their orders. One cappuccino and one flat white... Paid €9.10... Not a big deal if you get a regular cup of coffee, but unfortunately, you get a glass of coffee that was down in three sips... The price-quality ratio is very poor here... how dare you ask your customers this... There was no price list on the table, so we didn't know what it cost, but even then, you expect at least a regular "large" coffee, not a mini. It looked like it was in an espresso cup... very disappointing...

We started our day in Schiedam at Záálig with a delicious cup of coffee and apple pie with whipped cream. Afterward, we took a boat tour of Schiedam, which we highly recommend. Then it was time for lunch, which we did again at Záálig. We then strolled through the shopping street and enjoyed a refreshing beer with some delicious bitterballen (bitterballen) and cheese sticks. Hmm... In short, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks here.

Great spot for a cup of coffee. Because it was so busy inside, it would have taken a little longer, but it wasn't too bad. So, a big plus for the service!

Disappointing lunch, soggy toasted bread, and probably leftover lettuce from yesterday (lettuce: lifeless, soggy, and smelly). Cheese board: 8 cubes of unidentifiable cheese and 10 peanuts instead of nuts. High prices for poor quality.

The five of us all had a wonderful meal! The menu offers a variety of delicious dishes, something for everyone. The Turkish Börek is highly recommended. It's pleasant to sit both inside and outside on the terrace. The service is excellent.

The three of us had lunch at Zaalig. I had a salmon sandwich, which was delicious, the others had bread with carpaccio, which was rather bland and tasteless, and we shared a plate of fries with truffle mayo. We also had two mint teas and four bottles of iced tea, each one getting smaller and smaller. We paid €85, which is too much for three lunches with a few drinks. So, we won't be returning.

We stopped by here for drinks on a Thursday evening. Although it wasn't very busy, the staff (three people) struggled to keep an eye on all the tables. The people who came to take our order (two-thirds) were attentive and friendly. One person seemed visibly disenchanted with the day/shift. It's a cozy place to relax with a drink and/or a meal. It's located in the heart of the city on a large square. We ordered: one Americano, one cappuccino, one blackcurrant, and one Diet Coke. The coffee was delicious and exceptionally hot.

Zaalig is a lovely place, with a rustic interior, but when the weather's nice, you can relax on the terrace in the shade of a large tree. It's located on a quiet square in front of the old town hall. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food was excellent.

I stumbled upon this place by chance, and I really enjoyed it. Delicious fried eggs and excellent service.

What was presented as a refined Argentinian shrimp dish turned out to be a messy and poorly executed dish. The shrimp were so oversalted they were barely edible. The vegetables were overcooked and lacking any texture, and the rice was dry with hard, unpleasant chunks. The flavors were disconnected and lacked any balance or harmony. The dish was returned to the kitchen in its entirety. Although a polite apology was offered, an appropriate gesture—let alone any form of compensation—was completely absent. The bill remained untouched, which in the hospitality industry simply demonstrates a lack of hospitality. In this way, Baalig lacks both the finesse in the kitchen and the foundation of good service. A missed opportunity on all fronts.

Two hamburgers and four beers for €67.50… that’s absolutely ridiculous! Bunch of losers!

Had taken the children's menu, there was a small version of the headquarters, Mexican zucchini & shrimp. Wanted to order that and I was asked if I wanted duck breast or zucchini or shrimp? But the menu says zucchini & shrimp but no duck breast. I decided to have the shrimp. Wanted to take something else so I had espresso with..... Was later delivered by a waiter, he had two other coffee glasses on his tray but because he leaned forward and put my glass on the table, another glass of coffee fell off his tray onto the table and into my lap, he came later with cloths and first went to clean the table after he had done that he asked me if it was okay, I answered no, my knee hurts, hot coffee spilled over it. Oh and gave me a dry cloth to wipe myself off. I waited for what would be offered to me as compensation but no response. I paid and was told about my damage. I have not heard anything about it yet.

Celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary in the halls of Záálig. What a special and cozy evening this has become. The food was very well taken care of. Various small snacks as amuse. Very friendly service, really great. Thank you for this, you made the evening unforgettable.

Food is simply forgotten. Once everyone in the group has eaten, the dish is yet to arrive. We asked if it had been forgotten and the answer was that it still had to be caught. A joke we didn't appreciate. We would have preferred to hear an apology and an honest story. Lousy service!

Today we had lunch for the first time at Záálig in Schiedam and what a wonderful experience! The food was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. The colorful and warm decor creates a cozy atmosphere in which you immediately feel welcome. Highly recommended for a relaxing and tasty lunch. I'll definitely be back!

Service by inexperienced teenagers, not unfriendly but incompetent. The plates are served from across the table. Clearing the table also involves handing over the used crockery yourself. I had onion soup beforehand. There was nothing to complain about. The bread came with a small plastic tub of butter. I ordered goulash, which vaguely resembled goulash soup, the meat had been cooked so far that it had completely fallen apart and was tasteless. It looked like rope. It was served in a deep plate. The goulash was more like soup. When I asked for the accompanying rösti, it turned out to be already at the bottom of the “soup”. So not served separately. The accompanying salad came in some kind of beer glass and was completely tasteless without any dressing. Given the sad quality of what was offered, I wisely opted out of dessert. I did not return my goulash because I was in a group of 10 people and did not want to be unpleasant. My table companions agreed that it was particularly bad. I used to have a good meal at Zaalig, but now it's downright bad!! Didn't see me at Zaalig again.

Because the employees were unable to serve us on time by clearing away a fallen tray, we were no longer able to order lunch. We've been waiting for 30 minutes already.

Delicious food, attentive service

We are very happy to be able to eat at Zallijk again. Everything was delicious again, the chef gave me a tub of harissa to take home, because it is my favorite! Nice people, nice atmosphere, delicious menu!

Nice terrace, friendly staff, ok for lunch, but not for dinner. Steak rare is almost cooked and cut into strips. Risotto is caked-on paste, normally caused by cream sauce, according to them. was allowed to take another dish, that came when my partner had already had his plate empty for quite some time. Very bad. 70 euros for 4 drinks and 2 main courses and then eat one after the other. It was not a pleasant experience and we will not repeat it.
