We had a great high tea. Not the standard ‘triangle sandwixhes’ but really good quality bread, quiche, soup and pastries!

We received an excellent welcome for lunch from the staff. We needed a large table, and that was perfectly arranged. The menu options were well-informed, and the food and drink selection was excellent.

Delicious, healthy, and varied dishes, cozy atmosphere, friendly and attentive service. The cheesecake was delicious :)

Enjoying cafe in canal side leiden

The food was okay, but the portions are small. The service was not the best, we had to wait a long time whenever we needed assistance. The table was not clean before we sat down and the reservation system is a joke. The staff are not very friendly.

We had booked a high wine and chose to sit upstairs. However, it was infested with fruit flies, which ultimately affected our enjoyment of the food and wine. And towards the end, the staff came upstairs to eat, which we found quite disturbing.

Cozy interior, delicious wines (Bordelaise!) also by the glass, perfectly complementing the fun and delicious variety of snacks. We'll definitely be back!

The price-quality ratio wasn't quite right, given the small portions. The staff was friendly, but it took a long time to get our menu, then drinks, and then lunch. In my opinion, a sandwich isn't two slices of baguette.

We ordered a high tea that looked beautifully described on the website, but unfortunately, we were really disappointed. They didn't take into account one person who didn't eat cheese, and certainly not the things described on the website that were included with the high tea. We were allowed to choose something from the menu, but our high tea experience was already spoiled. It's a shame.

We ordered dinner and considering the price of the dishes, we expected better quality and not such a small dish. But the worst part was having to wait 1.5 hours to get our dinner served. The waiters were kind and the atmosphere of the terrace really good, but I don’t think I will be returning here. I did like that the bottle was free tho.

The woman who served us was truly fantastic. She knew everything about which wines paired with which dishes and all the delicious dishes. We had a fantastic evening!

Lovely spot on the water, friendly and fast service, had a great lunch. Definitely worth coming back.

Service was disappointing, staff was more concerned with themselves and each other than with customers. Food was fine but lukewarm. Fries sent back. Food was slammed on the table by the waitress. We used to like coming here because of the good service. This was a bad luck evening

I accidentally ordered food that had something in it that I can't eat. They kindly made it over for me without a charge even though it was totally my fault. The food was delicious with a lot of choice and and the atmosphere was very nice next to the canal with friendly waitstaff.

Quality has gone down from what it used to be a few years ago… Also a bit of a messy service when we had to repeat our order three times as she still didn’t get it. And one dish was actually wrong I said it to the waitress but she said that was the dish! (I ordered the mushroom wrap and the dish appeared with a tomato pasta/muhammarra style and a corn tortilla underneath.) I tried telling her this dish doesn’t contain any mushrooms and even has cheese, and she said that’s how the kitchen does it. Ended up paying and finding that she had actually ordered the pumpkin wrap… I didn’t finish the dish in the end because it was flavorless and the tortilla was hard as a rock! The place is cosy though, and perfect summer terrace. Perhaps only for a borrel/drinks!

High tea is not like "the example photo" on a tiered stand, but is served on wooden cutting boards, completely different than expected and tasteless

We had reserved a high cocktail. Delicious cocktails, cheerful and friendly service. First round of snacks was fantastic, second round unfortunately a disappointment. I would do something else for that.

Sat here a while ago and ordered a pork belly sandwich to share. After one bite, however, I came to the conclusion that there was no pork belly on the sandwich and I pointed this out to the waitress, to which the waitress reacted quite irritated. The sandwich was taken away and a little later the same sandwich, with a bite out of it, was returned with a measly slice of pork belly on it. Totally out of proportion to the price, but above all, I can't speak highly of the service.

The two of us are sitting by the water eating. Although it was very busy upon arrival because the terrace could be expanded after the market, we were immediately given good and friendly help. We both chose the 3 course menu. It was explained to us that you could also share the 3 courses with each other. We did that. This way we could eat 6 delicious dishes together. The atmosphere, service, food and price were great. Highly recommended, where we will definitely return.

Had a nice lunch on the terrace. The small dish concept is very tasty. The lunch deal is recommended, although the dishes are pricey.

Great place right on the water. Good selection of snacks. The taste was also good. You can do it very well. Bread with dips a bit lame.

Had a delicious meal with my sister. Unfortunately we didn't have much time as we were going to a concert, but the service and kitchen took that into account. Service was super nice and really knew what they were doing. Shared some dishes and they were very tasty! And it's great that on Thursday evening the spritzers were only 5 euros. Definitely worth repeating! :)

You are comfortable here, but you will be scammed. There is a sign with cow letters outside: Aperol 5 euros!! At checkout they appear to cost double. Only on Thursdays they are 5 euros. You know perfectly well what you are doing when you put that sign on the sidewalk on a sunny Friday... Service and location are excellent.

Very good location, terrace in full sun, fast service, dishes as beautiful as they are good, excellent sweet potato fries, great!

All quite pleasant but the food wasn’t very special. The service was good and everyone was friendly. I am always surprised when the loos in restaurants aren’t kept properly clean.

If you’re looking for a lovely spot along the canal in leiden to spend 9 euros on three slices of cheese, this is the place to be! The location of the restaurant is nice, it’s on the canal, however the service is pretty passive aggressive. We ordered the cheese platter and were surprised that for 9 euros you receive 3 thin slices of cheese and no bread. When we complained, and said that we’d hoped for at least some bread with it, the male waiter came, and was respectful and seemed to understand why we were a bit shocked. Some time later a female waitress came with another platter of three slices of cheese, which would have been perfectly fine. But she quickly placed it down whilst passive aggressively saying “de keuken is het er niet mee eens, dus dit is in jullie voordeel” which in English means “the kitchen doesn’t agree so this is in your benefit.”

Good lunch deal where you choose 2 dishes + 1 dish to share for a great price. You sit outside in the sun. Service is smooth and friendly. I went for the sirloin steak on bread and the hamburger. The loaded fries and shrimp croquettes were for sharing. The croquettes were tasty, you could taste the shrimp. The hamburger and entrecote sandwich also went down well. The fries were just fried too short. They were just done, but they were pale and not crispy. A shame, because it seemed like a tasty dish. Still, I would recommend this case. You are sitting there wonderfully!

After ordering a glass of wine, a spot became available where we wanted to sit. So I agreed with the staff, this was good so I went and grabbed all the stuff to move. I asked if I should put something down to indicate that the table was occupied, but this was not necessary. Other people sit down on the way to pack their things. So I mentioned that I had agreed with the staff that we could sit there, only to be told by the staff that there was nothing they could do about it. The student vibe can be chill, but it does not benefit the service. We won't come here anymore!

We had a very pleasant afternoon with you. The wine was delicious. Gruner veltliner from the neighbor. Fresh with the notes of spring. The dishes were all excellent in taste and wonderfully varied. An extra cheese platter completed the afternoon! Compliments to the chef and the friendly service! And...just a bottle of tap water is such a hospitable gesture!! Love from Neez and Keez.

Nice terrace on the water with smooth service

A really great place. Deliciously diverse food, very tasty and many different cuisines, so there is something for everyone. The staff is incredibly friendly and hospitable. You immediately feel welcome. We were here with a group of 8 people and will definitely come back.

In the summer it is wonderful to relax here on the terrace, because you have sun (almost) all day! In winter you can sit nice and warm and cozy inside, a nice homely atmosphere. Went yesterday and tried the new menu and it was delicious! So definitely recommended!

Nice, attractive tent with a unique menu and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options! Very attentive staff and well priced. I will definitely come back here! A three-course dinner with wine pairing is recommended to try much of the menu.

Aan de Rijn is a pleasant, cozy restaurant where I DEFINITELY! come back again. The staff knows what they are doing and are happy to help you! Even in winter you can sit here in the sun on the terrace, few places in Leiden can say that. Highly recommended.

The food was good, a nice variety for lunch. Two remarks: some items have very little ingredients and a lot of bread (hallumi, grilled vegetables was literally one slice of tomato and two zucchini); you really shouldn’t pick the cookies for the coffee with your hands and serve it, that’s not hygienic. Still 4 stars in the hope you’ll fix this.

What a nice place in the center of Leiden! The hostess, Shilene, really knows what she is talking about, has good knowledge about the different wines! We were a group of 15+ people and the location with a private space was able to accommodate this well.

Delicious food! The ceviche and pork cheek in particular are highly recommended. Nice staff who also tell us something about the wine. Definitely recommended!

Een super fijne groepservaring! Goed en vriendelijk mail contact, ook werd een super leuk initiatief genomen voor een samengesteld menu voor een top prijs. We hebben er met z'n alle heerlijk van genoten, zeker een aanrader!

The cafe is facing the canal, so the vibe was amazing. I went there to study but I don't think it was a good idea. It was more for chatting and catching up with friends. I should've gone to a cafe with a laptop welcome sign. But maybe if you want to study there, just ask the barista. Otherwise, cute cafe.

Had a delicious meal at Aan de Rijn with a top wine arrangement from La Bordelaise. The pork belly with the matching wine was really great and the service very friendly. Definitely recommended!

Tot mijn verrassing hadden ze een nieuwe kaart! Binnen hing een cozy sfeer, personeel is vriendelijk en het eten smaakte goed. Per gerecht een bijpassend wijntje gedronken, leuk!

Van de week in de nazomer zon op het terras gezeten, heerlijk! De kaart voor de avond zag er ook goed uit, wij komen snel terug.

Mediocre food in absurdly small portions, lifeless lady service, hardly any atmosphere. Downright a ball tent.

Lovely little place for some tasty bites!

Nice location with good food and drinks. We found service a bit difficult. Too many different staff on the terrace who often only brought something and then left dishes on tables and did not take orders. We and several people around us would have liked to order another round of drinks, but we didn't because it takes so long.

One of those places that take advantage of great location and feel they don't have to do anything more. Food was disgusting. Mozzarella in caprese salad had been frozen, salad absolutely drenched in sauce, canned tomatoes. Sticky chicken was actually drumsticks, which hadn't been clear before I ordered.

You have a nice seat and they are very friendly, but you don't have to do it for the food. Chicken was cold. Prices for the dishes are very expensive for what you get. Not full yet but don't feel like ordering more. I eat better at McDonald's and it's not that hot. Plus the straws in our aperol were ridiculously long The decoration was also laughable.

Made a reservation for lunch today. Upon arrival there was no table ready for four people, which I expected. Now we had to move to create a good spot under the parasol. Ordered the lunch deal 4 times. The soup was served last. The chicken bones were still raw on the inside. Returned it, but the waitress came back with it, because the chef had said it had been in the oven for 35 minutes and so it was fine. This was not accepted and a discussion followed. She offered a coffee as compensation instead of another dish. Had to imagine this myself and ordered and received shrimp croquettes. The lady from the kitchen later brought this herself with the announcement that one portion was to compensate for the two portions of chicken, because she thought the chicken was good. Once again discussion and so indecent to treat customers this way and it was clearly visible that the chicken was still raw on the inside. After all, we didn't have to pay extra, but this hassle did put a damper on our lunch. Although I liked to eat at “aan de Rijn” in the past, this bad experience is a reason not to come here anymore.

Bad food, but especially bad treatment. For example, we ordered marinated chicken legs ('sticky chicken') that were visibly raw. Is that bad? No, provided they are taken back, replaced or, if necessary, cooked in the oven. That was refused and instead we were offered to order something else. So we got shrimp croquettes of mediocre quality (for which we initially had to pay extra - which of course we refused). So it is strange and unusual that you have to start a discussion about raw meat. Well, it is clear that they will never see us again at Aan de Rijn.

Bad service, poor quality products. Highly recommended to skip. The staff first eats themselves before taking care of the guests. Don't ask once if it is to your liking. Advice: Close that business and turn it into a tourist office.

After 25 years going back to Leiden was a guaw... And eating and drinking by the water at this place was a guauwww guauwww having a closing day from Leiden.. Till the next time.

Heerlijknop terrs on the water. Fast and friendly service and delicious food.

Het eten was goed maar wel weinig, na2 voorgerechtjes en 2 hoofdgerechtjes en een nagerecht €34,50 per persoon, zit je niet vol. We vinden de drank erg duur 8,5 euro voor een glaasje chardonnay is erg aan de prijs, dus niet gezellig na getafeld, maar ergens anders nog een drankje gaan doen. Dus ik ga niet snel nog eens hier heen.

Delicious lunch. The menu consists of small dishes that you can also share with each other. Nice on the water! Very friendly service. Toilets a bit cramped in the hallway where the service has to go to the kitchen.

The food is really good and served in a beautiful manner. One will most likely share several smaller bites. Since those bites are not too big, you want to select multiple, which leads to a bill of around 30 - 40 € per person.

Excellent selection of small plates from a sensibly sized menu. Quality cooking and a good range of vegetarian and vegan options. Some nice beers too, the Grimbergen Blond was terrific. Relaxed atmosphere, at least on a quiet Tuesday evening in March, and friendly staff with excellent English. The three courses (two starters, two mains and a dessert per person) for €29.50 is a steal!

Order 2 sandwiches and you literally get 2 slices of baguette, too ridiculous for words, the coffee also tastes like nothing. I will never ever go here again. just a complete rip off

We hebben hier geluncht. Het is een klein restaurant, die sfeervol is ingericht. Het was wel behoorlijk koud binnen. De lunchdeal was € 12,50, hiervoor krijg je soep, een klein broodje en een gerechtje. De pompensoep was goed. Het klein broodje hamburger stelde niet veel voor. Het vlees was erg droog. Ook de toppings op de hamburger was amper aanwezig. Als gerecht had ik baba ganoush, deze was niet vers en kwam uit een zeer koude koelkast. Dit kan echt wel een stuk beter. Het personeel was vriendelijk tegen de klanten. Wij zaten in de buurt van de bar en onderling had ze een gesprek, dat ze totaal geen zin hadden om te werken. Ook straalde ze dit uit. Altijd jammer als je dit hoort in een restaurant.

Zeer teleurstellend. Hamburger smaakte naar niets. Garanalenkroket zonder garnalen en zelfs de koffie smaakte niet.

Cozy place and location is beautiful. There is a homely atmosphere inside. Thought the lunch was a bit on the meager side, it was reserved on a platter for two people!

Very nice and cozy restaurant. Also popular because the tables are well occupied. The snack menu is highly recommended. Whether you are a big or small eater, you can put it together according to your own ideas. Friendly and smooth service. A place to go to more often.

Heerlijke hapjes die je samen kunt delen.

Leuke zaak, vegan eten is er zeker wel, maar het kan wel iets beter! Wat wij hebben gegeten, was heerlijk!

The food was pretty good, the drink was pretty good. All in all pretty average. The tiramisu for dessert was the best dish of the night though

Lekkere koffie en vriendelijk personeel.

Leuk concept. We hebben per persoon twee kleine gerechtjes besteld, dat was voor ons meer dan genoeg. Het was gezellig om in Aan de Rijn te lunchen.

Leuke uitstraling van het interieur en de ponton was lekker ruim opgezet. Verder uitstekende service, lekkere drankjes alleen een tikkeltje duur voor de studenten onder ons 😅

Op de kaart staat Kleine koude broodjes. We bestelde een klein koud broodje met Romige Geitenkaas met walnoot kruim, 4,25 en een koud broodje met Makreel salade met rode biet 4,50. We kregen 2 sneetjes stokbrood besmeerd met bovenstaande, erg teleurstellend. Hier gaan wij niet meer lunchen. Dit blijken 2 stukjes stokbrood te zijn. Erg teleurstellend.

Leuk tentje in leiden met heerlijk buiten terras bij goed weer. Leuk concept met kleine hapjes, waardoor je veel kan proeven en ook prima hoeveelheid om met je gezelschap te kunnen uitwisselen/ delen. Vriendelijke en vlotte service. Prijs kwaliteit verhouding wisselend. Variërend van heerlijk smaakvolle gerechtjes tot minder bijzondere hapjes. Van het 'starters' gedeelte werd ik enthousiaster dan van de rest van de gangen. Van de 'starters' genoten met oa de erg goede taco paddestoelenmix, garnalenkroketjes (goed gevuld en héél lekker), hummus van aubergine en gegrilde paprika met pita, pulled pumpkin, auberginerolletjes. Van de maincourse minder enthousiast over de curry (smaakte poederig en komijn te sterk aanwezig), gnocci in saus (héél eenvoudig, vond het z'n geld niet waard), gegrilde groente eenzijdig en quasedillas werd een kleffe hap. Wel erg lekker waren de garnalen, paella en kipburgertje. Frietjes lekker knapperig en lekkere truffelmayo. Ik had hogere verwachtingen, maar heb lekker (genoeg) gegeten. Zou niet zo snel terug gaan om meer te proeven.

Good execution on the small plates concept (3 plates for a normal sized lunch). The food was good and the view over the canal is enjoyable. Deducting a star from food quality just because the other Dutch restaurants I went to set an unreasonable high bar.

Van een heerlijke lunch genoten samen met met mijn vrouw en mijn ouders. De bediening was super vriendelijk, ze konden fijn uitleggen wat het concept van eten "om te delen" was, want mijn vader kreeg dat nog niet helemaal mee🫢 Hij dacht dat alle kaas🧀 van het kaasplankje voor hemzelf was🤣 Erg lekkere soep, hapjes, broodjes en nacho's! Zeker voor herhaling vatbaar!

Passeggiando tra i canali di Leiden ci siamo imbattuti in questo locale che offriva posto anche all'aperto su una barca ormeggiata davanti al locale. Consiglio il fritto misto preparato da loro oltre ad una bella bevuta.

Voor het ontbijt mogen ze wel wat meer zoete keuzes toevoegen, ik zal vast niet de enige zijn die zoet wil eten in de ochtend. Verder lekker eten, leuk personeel en prima sfeertje voor maandagochtend.

Het eten was wel goed geloof ik. Maar we hebben er alleen wat gedronken.

Super lekker gegeten. Twee kleine voorgerechtjes, twee hoofdgerechtjes en een toetje, samen gedeeld allemaal, was erg goed! De bediening was heel vriendelijk. Enig minpunt, wij waren rond 21.15u de laatste gasten en zaten niet op ons gemak. Tijdens het hoofdgerecht werd (vriendelijk, dat zeker) gevraagd of we al wisten of we straks koffie wilden, anders konden ze het apparaat vast schoonmaken. De toetjes keuze was beperkt omdat de keuken dicht bleek. Gelijk na het toetje werd gevraagd of we alvast konden afrekenen zodat ze vast de kassa konden afsluiten. We mochten zeker nog blijven zitten werd vriendelijk gezegd. Maar dan voel je je om 21.30 wel ongemakkelijk en zijn we dus weggegaan. Om die reden zou ik niet snel terug gaan, tenzij het terras vol zit en het een latere avond gaat worden. Als we van te voren wisten dat ze om 21.30 dicht wilden, dan hou je er rekening mee. Dit voelde niet gastvrij, ondanks dat ze echt wel vriendelijk zijn.

Ik kom hier heel vaak, ook met vrienden. De kleine gerechten zijn bijna allemaal voortreffelijk (ihb de Paella en de kippensoep). De bediening is alert maar niet dominant. De stoelen tegen de wand aan zijn ergonomisch goed gekozen. Nadeel is dat ze geen kaart hebben met de non-alcoholische dranken.

Nog nooit zo lekker gegeten! Enorm vriendelijk personeel en uitstekende cappuccino. Dat smaakt naar meer!
