Anne&Max Amsterdam Oostenburg in Oostelijke Eilanden/Kadijken

We went to Anne&Max for a quick breakfast today. I had read the relatively negative reviews from the recent past and was a bit skeptical. There were two of us, and we were greeted very warmly. Since we were in a bit of a hurry, we asked if a quick breakfast was possible. It was quick... both taking the order and receiving the food. The only downside: the portion size of the "Max" breakfast was quite small for €14, but it was perfectly sufficient to start the day. The atmosphere was pleasant, and it wasn't too loud in the entire café; the restrooms were also very clean. So, we had a very good experience overall...

I literally live on the street and go there often. Bad service, rude staff. I am quite tall and would like to sit at a high table; it was completely empty around 4:00 PM. So that was a big problem. Plenty of other places with delicious food and coffee.

Customer service is lacking and the food is tasteless and overpriced!!!! Don’t go

The lemon poppyseed cake was good. Not too sweet at all. I unfortunetly forgot i dont like green tea when ordering matcha, so that was not for me. Staff was lovely and helpful. Wifi is found on chalkboard. Perfect when leaving laundry at the washer.

I had never been to Anne & Max in Amsterdam before, although I had a good experience in Rotterdam. The service was friendly and the coffee was good. However, I was quite disappointed by the portion size of the pulled chicken bowl. It is presented as a main course, but is more of a side salad, with only a small amount of pulled chicken (about a tablespoon). I would advise the restaurant to present the bowls differently or make the portions larger (possibly at a higher price), as this was quite disappointing.

A particularly disappointing experience. Apparently, a child is welcome as long as they keep completely quiet (according to the owner). We were asked to leave the café because my daughter, who has autism, became overstimulated and started crying. After I explained that she has autism, nothing changed in the situation. There was no understanding, no empathy, and no attempt to be helpful. Remarkably, this café does have a play area for children. My daughter did not run around, did not break anything, and did not scream through the café. She sat quietly next to me coloring for most of the time and simply became overstimulated. Moreover, it was virtually empty inside, because most guests were sitting outside due to the nice weather. Yet, according to the owner, she was "causing a nuisance." If a child with an invisible disability is already too much, I wonder who that play area is actually intended for. A little humanity and understanding costs nothing. Unfortunately, that was nowhere to be found here. In any case, we will not be coming back, and other parents of children with autism or other sensory sensitivities should take this into account.

Very rude older man at the counter. He kept staring at me, which made me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome. The coffee tasted bad and definitely wasn’t worth the money. Overall, a disappointing experience, and I won’t be coming back.

Ended up here via Social Deal. What a delight for our taste buds. Atmosphere, taste, and service all come together here, making for a wonderful experience!

Nice place and very friendly staff

We arrived and we couldn’t sit on the terrace because it smelled horribly. Most of the drinks we ordered were definitely not good quality, matcha was not blended properly and the drink was full of lumps. When we ordered the food they took 45 minutes to bring it to our table when we had simply ordered 4 croissants. We also couldn’t pay separately which isn’t ideal if you are going with a group of friends. Prices were way too high for such quality.

Worst place for coffee or food. Worst service you can ever see, no one there is motivated to work. Plan on waiting at least an hr to get sth served to you. Very rude and bad quality.

Overpriced and poor quality. Ive never had such a horrible croissant. Underbaked, raw, chewy center. 0 flakes. Supermarket croissant is better. The staff takes the feedback as a personal insult. They also choose not to turn airconditioning on even in 30 degrees.

I found this place under stressful circumstances after having lost my keys for where I am staying and luckily this was open as I’ve now discovered a place I’ll definitely be coming back to. Such fresh good food, peaceful atmosphere, excellent values and chill music. I was also very happy to be able to order lunch at nearly 4 pm. Very very happy to have discovered this by accident so close to where I’m staying.

I had a very bad experience in this place today, the girls working clearly didnt want to be there, i asked for an iced cacao drink and asked what it was, they could not explain, then i asked if they could add coffee to it and they yes. Time to pay:9 EUROS. Ok, paid. Took 20 min to get my beverage, which surprisingly was hot, and not iced as requested. I told the girl serving and all she dis was move the hot drink to a cup with ice. It was a hot day, so the beverage never got cold and i could not drink it. Horrible service and a rip off!!

A nice old couple is running this place at an elderly pace. We had to wait a long time, again. The food is ok-ish, but the portions are small. Would not recommend.

Such a quiet and spacious place is truly rare in Amsterdam! Also a great spot to do some work between appointments. With an extra slice of bread at breakfast, the food would have been a 5/5 ;)

We reserved high tea in advance, which ultimately took more than 45 minutes before we received it. The service needs to be managed more tightly because it wasn't busy and this could have been prepared for. The food was tasty, though.

The weirdest experience with the rudest waiter I’ve ever encountered. I recently moved into the neighbourhood and started visiting this café quite often. To be clear, I have absolutely no complaints about the food or drinks—they’re consistently good—and the female staff members have always been warm, welcoming, and professional. Unfortunately, my experience with an older couple working there, particularly the man, has been deeply uncomfortable and confusing. Yesterday, I stopped by as usual. From the moment I walked in, the older gentleman gave me a strange attitude. I ordered and paid at the counter, had my cacao, and then left to quickly grab my laptop from home. About 30 minutes later, I returned, ordered another drink, paid again, and sat down to work—this time in a different seat. Around 15 minutes later, the same man approached me and began reprimanding me, saying that if I “move places,” I need to inform him. I was completely confused and calmly explained that I hadn’t moved seats—I had left the café and come back, which meant I was a new, paying customer again. Yes, I chose a different seat, but I genuinely couldn’t understand why that would be an issue, especially since I always pay upfront. Despite this, he continued speaking to me in a condescending and accusatory tone. None of what he was saying made sense, and it felt less like a policy explanation and more like a personal attack. At one point, he vaguely referenced something that happened “before,” which I can only assume might relate to a previous visit, which must be about a week ago, when I changed seats because I felt uncomfortable sitting near someone. Again, I had paid—so I fail to see the problem. The interaction became increasingly uncomfortable. He repeatedly asked, “Do you understand?” in a tone that felt patronizing and unnecessarily authoritative. I’m generally a calm and respectful person, but being confronted like this without any clear reason was upsetting. I decided to pack my things and leave. Before I left, I told him, politely but firmly: “Sir, if you’re having a bad day, please don’t take it out on customers.” This seemed to offend him, and he followed me though, confronting me further and asking what my problem was. I responded that I didn’t have one—it seemed like he did. What made the situation even more surreal was that the couple sitting next to me witnessed the exchange and later commented that he seemed to be in the wrong profession. Clearly, I wasn’t the only one taken aback by his behaviour. Despite all of this, I decided to give the place another chance this morning because I genuinely like the café itself. I walked in, approached the counter, and greeted him politely: “Hi, how are you?” His response? “I’m not going to help you.” No explanation. No context. Just a flat refusal to serve me. At this point, I’m genuinely at a loss. I have never been treated this way in any establishment—let alone refused service without cause. The entire experience has been uncomfortable, confusing, and frankly quite upsetting. It feels arbitrary and personal, and I still don’t understand what prompted this behavior. It’s a real shame, because the café itself has a lot going for it. But experiences like this completely overshadow everything else. I sincerely hope management addresses this, because no customer should be made to feel unwelcome or singled out in this way.

Very pleasant both inside and out. The service was friendly. The only downside was the portion sizes. Everything was too small and not nearly enough for the price. A shame, because the menu looked tempting.

What a lovely place! We were here for lunch and chose the "reading table" for the four of us. A luxurious lunch was served for two and was very varied. Everything was deliciously fresh and beautifully presented. What a lovely atmosphere and meal!

I stumbled across this café while exploring this part of Amsterdam on Monday afternoon 19th January 2026. On entering I received an extremely warm welcome and ordered a delicious, well-presented club sandwich with a small soup and tea – ideal for a chilly Amsterdam day and having arrived on Eurostar from London with only a modest breakfast earlier. The premises were light and airy - yet cosy - and it was frequented by locals. A superb counterpoint to the touristy venues of more central locations in the city. I went back on Tuesday 20th morning and was not only welcomed but recognised from the day before and had a superb coffee and tasty cake. I would have liked to have visited again during my three-day stay but meeting up with a friend took me to the other side of the town. Worth a visit if you are in this area and only a short walk from the Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) and Brouwerij’t Ij – Proeflokaal de Molen brewery, bar and windmill. When I’m back in Amsterdam I will certainly aim to return here.

Today, a friend and I had our first High Tea at Anne & Max. The staff were incredibly friendly, and I mean really friendly. We were helped by a slightly older woman and a slightly older man. Perhaps they were Anne and Max? 🙊 It was really great that they had gluten-free options for my friend. We really enjoyed the food. It was even too much for us. The price was completely fair and reasonable for the portion. Originally, it was (only) €18 per person, but thanks to a Social Deal promotion, it was €11.50. The man and woman came by frequently to check if we still had tea (super attentive) and to make sure it tasted good. We were really happy with the food and the service. I definitely recommend this place for High Tea! Maybe try their menu items next time 😋

I stopped here for some good coffee and a simple lunch, a cup of bell pepper and tomato soup. It was quiet, so I could work comfortably while enjoying my treats. A combination many others also enjoyed. So if you want to work from a different spot while enjoying a good coffee... this is definitely a good spot!

Lovely Breakfast. Fantastic mix of everything along with a freshly squeezed orange juice, fruity yogurt. Best croissant I’ve had in a long time and scrambled eggs with salmon or bacon. Super coffee. We also tried the good for you breakfast with hummus and red pepper sauce. Also delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Anne & Max Oostenburg, our worst experience ever! We chose a table in front of the café and ordered: Two filter coffees A piece of apple pie called “ambachtelijk”, meaning artisan, baked with craftmanship A “mediteraanse Bowl” On our table were dirty dishes from other guests, this was taken away when we asked for it after about 30 minutes. It took ages until the filter coffee arrived, the coffee was lukewarm or cold. The “ambachtelijke” apple tart is an industrial product probably from a freezer. Our bill had to be paid in advance when the coffee arrived. We asked if we might have a bit of milk for our coffee. The lady returned with one mini plastic cup of milk. We were two people with two filter coffees, so we asked for more milk. This milk never arrived. I went inside to ask for a drop of milk and was told that this is the kitchen area and I must ask at the bar area, which I did. After this terrible service and waiting for more than 30 minutes for our bowl, we decided to give up and leave. We went inside to complain and asked to get the money for the bowl back. The miraculous word “het spijt me”, Dutch for “I am sorry” came not over the lips of any of the staff. But the chief of staff or owner appeared, and a big discussion started before we finally got the payment for the bowl back. The owner agreed to return the payment for the bowl, if we would never return to his café. He can be assured that we will never return. And we very much recommend not to visit this unorganised and unfriendly café.

I’ve been here to this location now a third time and have had great experiences until now. Unfortunately, today after ordering online at the table as requested, a vegan version of the eggcellent start the cook comes out and tells me they do not have the vegan version today. I say OK I’ll take eggs and I forgot to ask for scrambled hard as I have a texture thing and cannot eat them wet. So they come out wet and I wait for someone for 15 minutes. No one comes out so I go inside and ask a waiter if they can be remade for me he comes back outside and tells me the chef will throw them back on the skillet. No, I do not want eggs that are going to be rubbery. Then the chef comes out angrily, says to me why didn’t I come to him first that he is always behind the counter however he was at the barista station not at the cooking area after I waited 5 minutes for someone inside and I had already waited 15 minutes for someone outside and then finally went inside to ask for help. Yes, it’s SAIL, yes they are busy but I can’t eat the eggs and he refuses to give me new eggs or a partial refund as I feel sour and want to leave already. I told them “I know you are busy, but I cannot eat these.” Then the nice waitress comes by after discussing this issue with him for about seven minutes which costs them more time and money I guarantee than giving me two more eggs. She says a new vegan version is coming out for me… I said to her, “but he said they didn’t have it and now you have it?” There was no delivery of food while I was there. He obviously just did not want to take the time to make the delicious sauce that comes with the tofu dish. I am extremely disappointed and began crying at the restaurant because I had already been to a different one that day that was closed because of SAIL. The waitress was very kind, but I cannot believe that he refused to make the vegan version because they were too busy snd that he came out angrily to me, even though he had been a nice person the previous two times I had been there. I feel very uncared for and will never come to this location again. I had very warm feelings for this place as I have only been here 7 weeks and the one in Eindhoven was very friendly at all times. It was my “third place,” but honestly, the chef treated me very poorly, that I hate to say it, but I’ll never be back to this one, not that they care, anyways. So I wasted 14 euro on one bite of eggs. Thanks, Anne and Max!

Found this lovely restaurant recommended by Frank's Smoke House just down the street. The husband and wife, Max and Anne, take great pride in all they serve... the soups, spreads, and breads as well as coffees and teas. Love the atmosphere inside and outside the restaurant. I will definitely visit again and again when in Amsterdam.

This is the best coffee in Amsterdam and the staff is very friendly, especially in this cafe, these are wonderful people who create a family atmosphere, I highly recommend it to everyone.

When they say “your living room in the city” they aren’t kidding. This location has a lovely atmosphere and we come here a lot. The food is good and always served with care. It’s quick but comfortable and makes working from here a pleasure as well. Good outdoor areas on both streets give a lot of summer options. Great staff as well!

I've been coming here few times in the past, and overall the coffee is good, the place is spacious and cozy. My opinion of this place has changed since I tried to work from here with my laptop. First I sat outside by the lounge chairs and ordered coffee, but was told that it's not allowed to sit with a laptop in such chair, only by the bigger table (such policy isn't written there, and initially the waiter didn't mention anything when I was ordering coffee, so how was I supposed to know). I agreed to change places, and was moved by the lady working there to a bigger table with 4 places. Then after a while, the owner approached me and asked to move again to a smaller table. This started to feel like a harassment and so I left. I get that not every coffee places like people with laptops, but there are better ways a business can handle this, instead of playing this comedy.

We are obsessed with this place! Every time we come to Amsterdam we have to have brunch here. The food is 11/10 so fresh. There’s not many good food places in Amsterdam, a lot of overhyped places too but this place stands out for sure. Can’t wait to visit again.

Our regular spot when we want to drink coffee together after a walk. So cozy, a really nice place and nice decor. Service is always very nice and attentive.

I hadn't been to Anne & Max for a while, about six months ago and I was shocked by the quality, especially in relation to the price. The scrambled eggs with minimal cubes of zucchini and some cold tomatoes were quite tasteless. A tuft of arugula and some thinly spread hummus next to it and two thin slices of bread, which they say is sourdough, I can't check that but it looked like supermarket bread. Finished all that with a dollop of cottage cheese, good for the proteins, no idea what the purpose was. In summary, a rather loveless plate, which should really be better for €13.

The food taste nice, but the portions are ridiculously small. The juice included with the breakfast was small espresso cup size. And the pancake menu was more like an appetizer. I wouldn't recommend this place because the price doesn't justify the amount of food that you get at all.

Had a latte and an apple tart and honestly the coffee tasted horrible, tasted very milky with no taste of coffee and was very foamy like a cappuccino which is not what I ordered. The apple tart on the other hand tasted lovely. Staff weren't quite friendly either which is what makes the business for me.

Very good food and coffee. It is a nice atmosphere to work. The service is not good though. When I ask for a glass of water while I didn’t order but my 6 friends did, I am expecting to get it without being said « Did you order ? It is not normal, we are not at the library. » Even though I came alone and asked for water, it is a necessary good and I would expect some empathy from the person serving me. Some humanity feels good sometimes !

We were waiting for 2 to go drinks for almost 20 minutes. You should warn people who come for to go drinks in advance that it would take so long. Additionally, my matcha latte had insanely lot of sugar in it, also not something I was warned about in advance.

This Anne&Max café is spacious and attractive, with luxurious seating that is comparable to other Anne&Max locations. I was very happy that they were open on Christmas Day, a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee! As for the cappuccino: the milk foam and the taste were fine, but not comparable to the high standard of Anne&Max on the Oostelijke Handelskade. The barista here seems a little less experienced, although the coffee remains tasty thanks to the organic top quality beans that Anne&Max uses.

Sorry, but having to wait more than 45 minutes (close to an hour, actually) for an ordinary, cold .Club sandwich is just too much. People have other things to do on a Sunday. I understand its busy and its hard to find staff but then at least say sorry or warn people that you are unable to serve an order in an acceptable timeframe....

The ambience and staff are very good. Although it may seem like a white-collar coffee spot, it will be good for those who are stuck in the crowded coffee shops in the city center with its spacious structure.

Not recommended: it took a very long time before I got my food and then I got something completely different than what was on the menu. 'Klutsvrei' with sourdough bread, generously topped with hummus and paprika spread...well no (see the photos for a comparison). First there was no bread at all, then I was given a plate with only bread and I had to explain that there should be a spread on both. Very special, how can you serve this while presenting it very differently on your menu? Scam and it didn't taste good. Would you spend your money somewhere else?

Nice tent and fresh tasty drinks. And the cappuccinos are always good too. But what a disappointment the Nachos from the oven were. Understand that you want to make money, but for almost €11 you can put some more taco chips in the container. This was just pathetic…. Furthermore, it should also be a bit clearer that you can only order via a QR code (which was on the floor under the table with us).

Cafe with really relaxed vibes. Could have spent the entire day chilling watching the world go by! Had a nice homemade tomato soup and an orange & ginger tea which were both great. Partner had sourdough with dips which looked nice. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Everything very clean and tidy. Would love to come back again. October 2024 A pretty large place nicely located. Just went in for a flat white and a piece of apple pie. Had the impression the Apple pie was not freshly baked and had been frozen before ... tast was oke. Staff was attending very friendly and really fast. Ordering by QR code a real advantage.

I initially visited this café for a lovely afternoon lunch and gave it a 5-star rating due to the great experience. However, during my return visit for coffee and a tart while working on my laptop, the atmosphere changed significantly. The owner repeatedly insisted that I order more, which disrupted my experience and was quite off-putting. As a recurring client over the year, I was disappointed by this pressure to consume more. This inconsistency in service has unfortunately led me to reconsider my rating. It’s important for businesses to understand the value of customer satisfaction and trust.

Breakfast galore! 🔋💪🏻 The basket containing all the nutrients needed to face the expensive Dutch days with the right energy! Terrine with evergreen eggs and bacon, for the right protein intake, very tasty 😋 Glass jar with very delicate Greek yogurt, cereal cherry jam, grapes and fresh blueberries... a boom of fresh flavors Croissant... nothing special but ok Cool, healthy and concrete. A guarantee! 👍🏻

Not the most attractive tent.. It's fine to have a quiet coffee with your laptop. What really disappointed me was the acai bowl... It doesn't even look like it. That they dare to serve this. It really ruined my morning.

This is our neighbourhood coffee, where we come every weekend to take a great coffee and eat when hungry. The food is fresh and tasty and the owners are the kindness people, welcoming us with our baby and always making sure that we are good as enjoying. Thanks!

Normally I'm fine here, not excellent, but this time I had an iced cappuccino to take with me, which I thought would be with ice cubes, that's silly of me; But honestly, one of the nastiest iced coffees I've ever had Tasted like it was made with oat milk, even though I didn't ask for it... too gross for words... I'm not coming anymore.

Just a fantastic place, food and people are so nice. Perfect breakfast, coffee, everything. We were here twice. Wonderful. Go there and enjoy...

The Anne & Max is just unique. The whole crew is friendly, the breakfast was just fabulous. My personal highlight was the cat that does not belong to the restaurant but she’s there from time to time. It’s lovely to have a cup of an amazing tasting flat white coffee and petting the cat. Fore sure a must visit off the busy central. And I also wanna mention the ambience, it’s clean, modern style and great music. It has a very special vibe to it.

What a wonderful place this is. There is clearly a lot of love and attention put into the food, the interior, the music. Delicious lunch and especially the smoothies are highly recommended. Good service too and everything is nice and hygienic. Recommended.

I never leave bad reviews. The owners/employees of this cafe are incredibly obnoxious. I came in, ordered a drink, and sat to work on some schoolwork with plans to order lunch later in the day. In the 1.5-2 hours after I ordered my drink, employees came up to me at least 4 times asking if I would like to order anything else, eventually resulting in one saying I couldn’t expect to stay the whole day just ordering one drink. I left a few minutes later, deciding not to order food anymore because I felt uncomfortable and didn’t want to give them any more business. I would have come in regularly and ordered drinks and food the next few months, but now will never return. The whole time I was there, there were maybe 10-15 other people in the cafe and over 40-60 open seats. For a cafe to advertise free wifi/laptop use etc and be relatively empty, this is bizarre - and regardless, to order a drink and spend 2 hours at a cafe is a normal expectation/activity.

Great place to get a coffee and even to celebrate a birthday! Very friendly personnel and gezellig atmosphere! Top!
