Ao Bar Amsterdam in Staatsliedenbuurt

I've been a regular at AO in Amsterdam for years, as I travel often and appreciate good coffee. It used to be one of my favorite spots, offering great service and high-quality coffee. However, since the management change in December 2024, my experience has significantly declined. The coffee quality has dropped, and the cake I had was dry. Service was also slow and not up to the standard I was used to. Unfortunately, I won't be returning, as there are better coffee options nearby.

I got a chai and a banana bread, the service was super nice and cheery. The atmosphere was mixed for me, outside smoke was coming to the inside tables

The cafe is located at a quiet part of Amsterdam. We enjoyed our coffee and matcha latte. The matcha cookie tasted delicious. We also ordered normal tosti and it was decent, we didn’t think that it was worth the price though. Both the interior and exterior of the cafe is beautiful. I like that they provide many seats both inside and outside.

The coffee was good but just a heads up, they don’t have wifi so it’s not a place to go study/work.

The baristas here are the kindest! One gave my friend and I so many local reccs. Try the fresh juices and lattes.

The drinks were delicious and so were the sweets, especially the matcha marble cake!! The place is super cozy and different, and the atmosphere 10/10. There were many little dogs around me and that made me feel very happy. The service was very friendly and recommended what to try.

Super stylish shop, everything is well thought out and above all it tastes great! The Machta Latte was super refreshing and the cookies are delicious too! It's a little out of the way but in a nice, quiet area that's easy to see.

I have never been treated this kindly in a public space. I was having a bad day and met up with a friend. Eventually I was crying (pretty embarrassing). The barista that was working today came over, gave me some tissues, a bottle of water and a plate with left over cake to comfort me. Absolutely the sweetest thing. I honestly dont like Amsterdam cafes as staff is mostly a bi snobby but today made up for all bad experiences. Fantastic staff. Tostis looked fantastic. Im a little sad I didnt order one. Coffee was om point. Cake was lovely. Would absolutely go again and 10/10 would recommend. P.s. super dog friendly. Saw so many happy fluffs come in today!

Great, somewhat remote but stylish cafe. Away from the hustle and bustle, it's a great place to switch off and treat yourself to one or two delicacies. We ordered the banana bread: extremely tasty! Likewise the hot chocolate and also the cappuccino. The service was also very nice, courteous and calm!

A very nice store. It feels very refreshing as soon as you enter the door. There are great drinks and delicious food here, it's definitely worth a visit! Every employee is very hospitable. The store is very clean, especially the bathroom. Worth a visit!

I drank it with iced matcha and it came out beautifully with water. I can't drink milk, so I chose pea milk, but there was no extra money (I really liked this part haha). The iced matcha latte itself was honestly just so-so… It doesn't taste like matcha, so it feels like I'm just drinking soy milk. It was so disappointing ㅠㅠ Other than that, it was great because it was a cafe where you could chat comfortably without worrying about others!

Great cappucino and latter, special cakes and bonbons and the best grilled cheese sandwitch in town. Very friendly and positive vibe to cheer you up. No wifi

Great Japanese coffee bar met delicious matcha cake!

First time trying matcha cake in Amsterdam and I was doubting a bit as I came from east Asia, where matcha product is easily fetched. And folks, the matcha crepe cake here will not let you down!

We had 2 juices and a bananabread. The bananabread was excellent. The juices were also very tasty, however unfortunately there was also a lot of ice in the drinks. Not only does it not add to the taste, it also is a bit ‘cheap’. The service lacked some warmth. It was busy, but that should never be a reason.

Friendly and efficient staff, nice decor (that is, if you're a big fan of pale blue) and bonus points for the Gorillaz figurines. As for the quality of beverages, however (we ordered one cappuccino and one chai latte to go) I'd rate those as fair (a 6.5/10). Definitely not on par with Black to Black (2 blocks down) which we'd tried the previous day.

I would like to come here more often. Nice and friendly staff and a fantastic atmosphere. Definitely recommended if you are in the area.

I went there yesterday and I really enjoyed the staff’s friendly service! The coffee was good and I liked the vegan bananabread. I believe the blue atmosphere of the cafe just makes you calm and gives you a positive feeling:) I am looking forward to try other sweets next time!

Fantastic cafe bar with some great food options as well as cafe and soft and alcoholic drinks, inspired by Japan. A must is the kimchi toast as well as the pastries 🥐 Also lots of match options.

The plant based milk in Matcha latte is a bit too much for our personal tast. Lack of matcha flavor. The matcha drink was good.

They seem to have very proper, fresh and quite intense matcha! But I didn’t really like selection of plant milks. Pea milk really tasted like beans and made the matcha flavor “muddy”, and almond milk had some marzipan-like aroma to it, also didn’t work well with matcha itself

The very best koffie cake and lunch. The very best people work there. Its always a great pleasure to walk in and out with al the dillicious foods and drink but mostly The nice talk I always have with the owner and employees. If you don't pay them a visit you really missed out.

Omg the matcha latte is GREAT and the marble cake is also a must try. Not too sweet but defo tasty. The staffs are so cute. They dont have wifi tho but i only stopped for a quick bite then go so that's fine

Heerlijk plek om daar je koffie en cake te nuttigen. Zeker voor een liefhebber van matcha en goede koffie. Er is aandacht voor service en het personeel is vriendelijk. Goede aanwinst voor de buurt. Het is drukbezocht, dus kom op tijd in de ochtend (in mijn ervaring vóór 11) als je nog een amandel croissant of matcha taart wil bemachtigen.

While the food selection is minimal, it's enough for a nice breakfast or lunch. I had a cheese toastie and two coconut cappacinos - they really hit the spot. What is really amazing about this place is that EVERY time I've visited, the staff are really friendly and attentive and the coffee is great. They welcome entrepreneurs with their laptop (me this morning), people with pets, families with young children, expats, locals... everyone is welcome, and it really creates this nice vibe. Whenever I'm working in the area, I'll be back! They didn't even mind my broken Dutch haha

Best coffee and almond croissants in the neighborhood

The drink was good. However I was sitting and scribbling in an ipad, holding it in portrait mode, as I would do with a paper notepad, and they came by saying tablets are not allowed. That’s nonsense, but also there’s not a single sign about this policy at the cafe.

Espresso is excellent. Lady forgot my espresso, but then gave me one for free. Much appreciated gesture

Lovely terrase where you can taste delicious coffee and tea combinations as well as lovely pastries ☀️ Try their matcha latte and their vegan banana bread 💙 I loved the enchanted ambience outside when the sun is up. The decoration is lovely and the waitresses are very kind. I would only love to have more food variety in the menu so I could have an excuse to come by more often. Prices are also quite affordable, although they would profit from making menu options that were a little cheaper and more attractive for new clients.

Tolles Café mit einem coolen Konzept. Die Matcha Produkte und Waren fand ich besonders lecker (Matcha Marmor Kuchen). Modernes Ambiente und viele Sitzmöglichkeiten innen wie außen. Der Service ist sehr gut und äußerst freundlich.

I wish the matcha latte was sweetened. They only had honey or sugar, no syrup. But the atmosphere is super nice and chill, the staff were friendly! テラス席は4席くらいのみ。抹茶ラテは甘くなく、ハニーか砂糖しか用意がないみたいでハニーを貰いましたがもちろん混ざらず… でも店員さんはフレンドリーでお店の雰囲気もゆったりしてて良かったです。

Nice staff, cute spot, tasty drinks and cakes. Weekends tend to get super busy, so service is slow. I just wish they would go back to making matcha cheesecake. Still makes me sad after a year.

Finally got a chance to go to this coffee place and it is perfect. The staff is super sweet and constantly smiling (I could never). The coffee is delicious and I even got some tap water which I didn’t request so that was perfect 😇. I had a vegan peanut dark chocolate cookie (hope I said that right) and I need that recipe! So perfect. The oat cappuccino was also lovely. Will definitely come here again to read a book❤️

Nice coffee place. I would describe it as minimalistic and hip, rather than cosy, but the matcha was good and the staff was friendly and polite.

I absolutely enjoy visiting Ao Bar for a coffee break! The interior has a charming vibe, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. Despite not being a fan of matcha, I surprisingly fell in love with their Matcha Mille Crêpe Cake! It's a must-try for anyone visiting on a Saturday.

Hip location with good coffee but a slow service.

Great coffee, but don't ask for takeaway. It could get extremely busy, and only one dude brews. I would recommend sitting down outside, soaking up some sun, and enjoying your coffee.

The coffee is good, the cake is good, but the portion is a bit unacceptable, feel free to check out other people’s photos with the crep cake, I think mine was not even half of theirs

My go-to spot to meet up with friends in Amsterdam as the coffee and toasties are really good, their staff is super friendly and the matcha latte is just perfection.
