Arca Amsterdam in Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

We had dinner the other night at Arca, and it was a huge disappointment. We paid €169 per person (water and drinks excluded of course) for six small dishes, with medium to low quality overall. The meat arrived cold, which at this price point is simply unacceptable. The service timing was honestly shocking. We were seated at 9:00 pm and the dinner was supposed to be completed before midnight, since it was New Year’s Eve. Instead, we weren’t even served the first course, not even the pasta, before midnight. We only finished eating at 1:30 am, meaning the dinner lasted over four and a half hours for just a few plates. To apologize, they told us they would offer champagne, but what they actually brought was a glass of Portuguese wine. When we pointed out that this was not champagne, the response was: “Yes, yes, it’s champagne from Portugal.” At that point, the level of professionalism and honesty was honestly embarrassing. Given that this restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide, expectations were high. Unfortunately, the experience was nowhere near Michelin standards. Overpriced, poorly managed, and disappointing. Absolutely not recommended.

We never really write reviews, but unfortunately, we have to make an exception for this experience. We had a reservation for their NYE dinner & party for New Year's Eve, an evening where you'd expect perfect timing and organization. We thought we'd finish dinner before or a little after midnight, so we could still fully enjoy the accompanying party. Unfortunately, the evening turned out completely differently and was subpar. Our reservation was for 9:30 PM, but upon arrival, our table wasn't ready yet. As a small compensation, we were offered a glass of bubbly. It was almost 11:00 PM before we received anything more than just bread. Only after we explicitly complained did the first two courses suddenly arrive quickly. While the staff were generally friendly, the execution and planning were simply subpar. The second course, a duck tartlet, was supposed to be served hot according to the menu. In reality, it was served cold. Furthermore, the tartelette was dry and completely flavorless, even though it should have been spicy thanks to the addition of chorizo. At midnight, New Year's Eve, we had only had two of the six courses, while people who arrived later than us had already had one more. We received a glass of bubbly just too late at midnight, meaning we missed the New Year's Eve moment. On an evening like this, you'd expect this to be taken into account and the glasses to be ready beforehand. Whenever we asked where our food was, it took about twenty minutes for anything to be served. Dirty plates were left on the table for ages and were only cleared after we asked. We didn't receive the third course until midnight, but it was cold again. We sent it back, but the second attempt was also cold and unappetizing. There was hardly any seasoning, and the only thing we could taste was the burnt cauliflower flavor. At that point, we seriously considered canceling the six-course dinner early, but decided to stay put. After asking again for the next course to arrive—and after the dirty plates were once again only cleared after twenty minutes—we received a rude response from the waitstaff: "Do you want me to do my best or take my time?" When we indicated that we wanted them to move on quickly, the orzo with shrimp arrived quite quickly. Fortunately, it was warm and flavorful, but the prawn had been poorly cleaned, leaving a strong odor of innards. Around 1:30 a.m., we were finally served the main course (the beef). It was fine, but nothing special, and besides, we weren't really in the mood for meat at this hour. We had intended to join the party, but because of this complete fiasco, we stayed at the table until 2:00 a.m. At that point, the lights suddenly came on, clearly signaling everyone to leave. At that point, a large portion of the guests were still seated, and everyone was visibly irritated. No one seemed to understand the precise reasoning or planning behind the evening. The dessert also offered nothing in return. The texture was very spongy, and the taste was unremarkable and disappointing. Although the staff occasionally tried to soften the blow with a few complimentary drinks, this was in no way worth the price. At €170 per person for a six-course dinner, excluding drinks, this experience is simply unacceptable. Finally, the music was far too loud throughout the entire evening. From the very beginning, it was difficult to have a normal conversation. Around 10:30 PM, the jazz band gave way to a DJ and the techno started, while almost everyone was still eating. All in all, this was a very poorly organized NYE evening that in no way lived up to the price or expectations.

Excellent restaurant with amazing food and service. The pricing here was really good value too, for the quality of meals and service we received. Great for a date night!

We went out for dinner and we headed off to ARCA. Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa who has two Michelin stars in Lisbon, opened ARCA Amsterdam in 2021 on Martelaarsgracht, close to Amsterdam Central Station. Inside was elegant decor and some odd looking sculptures. As we congregated we had a drink in the bar. Once we were all there we were shown to our table. The place was full and busy. There was a really interesting menu, and to be honest I probably could have ordered anything (or everything) off the menu. For my starter I had the carpaccio de lírio. This was yellowtail carpaccio, Portuguese ‘caponata’ and pickled pearl onion. Now I did think this was going to be yellowfin tuna, but yellowtail is a different kind of fish. This was a fusion dish of Japanese style yellowtail slices with a Portuguese twist with the caponata. I had heard of caponata, but couldn’t remember exactly what it was. This version was aubergine, pepper, tomato, and onion. This was a delicious plate of food. The thin slices of fish were tasty and the caponata added sharpness and flavour. For my main course I had the presa Ibérica. This was Iberian pork presa, “Bolhão Pato” purée, and seasonal clams. I chose the pork as I have a fondness for Iberian pork. The Presa Ibérica (Iberico dam) is one of the most prized cuts in restaurants. It is also known as the "caviar" of the pig. It is in the front of the animal, between the spine and the shoulder. It is a muscle that the animal exercises a lot yet the infiltrated fat makes it very juicy. Alongside the pork was some lovely smooth potato purée. The dish was dressed with green beans, puffed rice, clams, and a tasty sauce. The pork was cooked perfectly, there was a lovely char on the outside of the portion of pork, the pork was tender and full of flavour. I really enjoyed every mouthful and cleared my plate. Two of our party went with the polvo à lagareiro, this was roasted octopus, mashed sweet potato, and piquillo peppers. This looked amazing and was assured it was delicious. Overall this was a fantastic meal and I really enjoyed it. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient.

We had dinner at Arca today and every dish felt like a different journey. The presentation, balance of flavors, and creativity in each plate clearly showed skill and passion in the kitchen. It’s rare to taste so many things in one evening and actually love them all. Still, what turned a good dinner into a memorable night was the service. Agne was attentive, warm, and absolutely professional, always there when needed without ever interrupting the flow. She made us feel welcome and truly taken care of. A fantastic experience overall. We would happily return and highly recommend Arca to others.

The food was great, the sphere even better and the service the best. We were served by Victor, an amazingly nice and helpful waiter. He really made the whole experience feel special with his explanations and his friendly and fast service. I can recommend everyone to give this place a shot and hopefully you will get to experience the same great service we had. The atmosphere is classy, not too loud or over the top. 5/5 for sure!!

My husband and I had high expectations for this restaurant, but unfortunately, we don't have positive feedback regarding the food. I'm Portuguese, so I know when a dish is authentic or not. The Bacalhau à Brás, as a signature dish, was too dry and lacked flavor: it felt like I was eating rubber, it didn't taste like fish at all. My husband thought the Pica-Pau wasn't bad, but the roasted potatoes were awful: he didn't even finish them. Natural water at a prohibitive price of €4.50 PER PERSON is a real rip-off! We were so disappointed that we didn't even order dessert! The only thing we liked were the glasses of Dão wine, although they were very expensive (€14 per person). The service was quite good, we were served by 4 super friendly and professional people. But the most important thing - the food! - failed, and its lack of flavor made the experience very expensive and far from being authentic Portuguese food. That's why we're not going back to ARCA! We'd much rather eat at a traditional Portuguese tavern than at a "fancy" place that serves tasteless food.

By far, my favourite restaurant in Amsterdam. It only opens at 18:30 in the evening but it's worth waiting for. Modern Portuguese dining at its best. The seafood rice is great! Their steak was soft and juicy! Starters were amazing... its an experience and worth the visit.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel — comfortable rooms, great atmosphere, and amazing staff who were always ready to help. The restaurant made our stay even better. We had the tuna tataki and absolutely loved the crunchy seaweed on top! We honestly didn’t even feel like leaving the hotel — there’s a spacious bar with great cocktails, perfect for a quick drink or a relaxed evening. Overall, a fantastic stay with excellent service and food. Highly recommend!

If I had to point out one drawback, it would be the portion sizes—the dishes leaned a little on the smaller side, especially given how delicious they were. A few more bites of that amazing octopus or sea bass would have made the experience perfect. Still, this is a must-visit restaurant. The flavors, presentation, and service far outweigh the minor issue with portions, and I’ll definitely be returning.

What a remarkable experience! I visited Arca with my friend a week ago and we’re still talking about the evening. The tasting menu was brilliant and the wine pairing was absolutely fantastic with thoughtful presentations of food and wine. Lovely and caring staff made the evening very pleasant.

I waited an hour to be served, then another hour after ordering, and the food was terrible. I had a francesinha (a Portuguese sandwich) that was awful; they used way too much alcohol, it was very bad, the sauce tasted sweet, I'll never eat here again, and the potatoes are oven-baked. Terrible experience, I don't recommend it.

Arrived 17 mins early. Was asked to sit in bar as table not ready, fair enough . 19 minutes after our booked time (waiting for 36 minutes at this point), we decided to go elsewhere and not waste the evening any further. Bar nibbles were below average in taste. Service was ok.

Booked a table for a date with my partner, although we went into it already with very high expectations both of us were still completely blown away by the whole experience. The decoration and the atmosphere in the restaurant were amazing, sophisticated while not being over the top. The service was always incredibly attentive and made us feel welcomed and made sure our experience was nothing short of incredible. As for the main point, myself being portuguese we decided to try the Arroz de marisco, and although it is a dish I have eaten countless times in my life I can with absolute certainty say this is by far the best version of this dish I have ever eaten. The wine chart was outstanding and the cauliflower dessert was just a whole sensory experience, absolutely loved it. Will definitely recommend and come back to.

The restaurant service is good but I did not enjoy the fusion food and found it to be below average in flavours.

It was a very good experience. The taste and dishes presentation is amazing. The food is rich in flavor and full of history.

We did a chefs table and it was fun watching the kitchen put together the dishes. Portions are large and filling so don’t over order. The orzo pasta was a standout for me. Good flavors and service.

What more could a Portuguese woman want in Amsterdam? It was a wonderful dinner featuring delicious Portuguese cuisine in a modern and welcoming setting. The Portuguese service was friendly. I felt right at home!

Being from Portugal and knowing the chef is Portuguese, we had to try the francesinha. The restaurant is very modern, the service is nice, and the food is full of flavor. The francesinha did not disappoint.

Lovely experience with interesting flavors, textures, and neatly organized plates. We went for the 5-course menu, but would recommend a la carte in hindsight.

We decided to treat ourselves and go to this fancy restaurant knowing that it is expensive and the portions might be on the small size. The hostess was polite and professional, but problems with the service started at the table. We were almost swarmed by different staff personal, we had waiters, a somalier and others come to our table throughout our whole stay. We were barely allowed to talk amongst ourselves because someone was always there picking up dishes or asking how was everything. Most annoyingly was when some of us were still finishing our dishes but the waiters already swarmed the table to pick up the plates of the Diners that have already finished, honestly we felt rushed like they needed our table for another service. We would have loved to sit and enjoy the meal, maybe order another wine glass. Now the food, portions were not small, but ridiculously small. It was like getting portions of a tasting menu but having to pay for a starter and a main. The sea food was well prepared, dishes were creative and mostly delicious. But we were incredibly disappointed with Imberico pork it was tough, chewy over seasoned and very unpleasant. Overall it was incredibly disappointing, we were looking to have a nice fancy meal with friends, instead we left after forty minutes, hungry and overwhelmed by the staff.

For being on the Michelin guide, this place disappoints. The food is not bad, but the service was careless and unfriendly. I recommend A-fusion or Oricale for a warmer, more attentive Michelin experience.

Definitely Michelin Guide quality. Such layered flavours and textures, we were not expecting the high level of detail! Was such a lovely experience. The bread was delicious with a very strong olive oil and the smoke flavour of the butter was surprising but so Smokey, I really enjoyed it. We ordered the sea bass main with a side of potatoes to share and the beef picu-pau starter as a main. The sea bass was crispy skinned, the cauliflower puree was so unctuous and velvety with the lemon puree flavour pops and crispy greens; this dish was light was incredible. The picu-pau with the pickled vegetables was packed with flavour, the vinegar punch and rich sauce 👌🏾👌🏾 We loved every bite, literally. The cauliflower and peanut tart dessert was so creative and a unique experience when you eat all element together. Separately the elements are too overpowering PLEASE NOTE THAT. “eat everything together in each mouthful.” Will recommend to anyone who will listen!! Our server Juan was engaged, informative and very friendly. Portuguese himself, was learned a lot about the food history and the chefs themselves as well as each meal and how to best eat them. Fantastic service.

The worst francesinha of my life, two pieces of nonexistent meat, bread as hard as a rock, and a minimal amount of sauce. To make up for it, I asked for more sauce, which took 30 minutes. What's more, we were moved from the restaurant to the bar, even though we had reserved a table at the restaurant the day before.

No estaba seguro de si este lugar era una galería de arte o restaurante - es una especie de ambos. El personal que le saluda cuando entra era eficiente y acogedor. Mientras no podíamos sentarnos en el restaurante debido a un evento que estaba sucediendo, nos llevaron a la zona del bar donde teníamos una selección de mesas Hightop o acogedora mesa de salón. Elegimos el último. Nuestro camarero era amable y sucinto preguntando primero si teníamos alguna alergia alimentaria. Todos disfrutamos de bebidas, vino y platos pequeños. Recomiendo encarecidamente nuestras opciones Pao Com Tomatee, La Bomba de Verduras, plato de queso portugués, La Bomba de Verduras (pequeñas bolas ligeramente empanadas y fritas cubiertas con alioli y una salsa bravas picante, papas fritas. No quedó ni una gota de bebida ni comida y quedamos totalmente satisfechos.

Absolutely incredible dining experience in a beautiful setting. The two waiters took care of me with my gluten free/celiac accommodations. While there was one mistake (potatoes that were not actually gf), they made it right and luckily I noticed before taking a bite. Every bite was amazing. Highly recommend!!

Everything was delicious. We came to the bar for dinner and were treated very well. Our waiter, Lorenzo, was charming and very attentive at all times.

Despite the quality of the service, atmosphere and dishes chosen, I think the quantity added to the prices is inappropriate. Three people, without alcoholic drinks, a single starter, three main courses, three desserts, three bottled drinks and water, we paid €177. Another thing that I didn't like was that if we wanted to give a tip we had to select +10%, +15% or +20% of the final amount of the bill at the ATM, and not what we really wanted and could donate. I didn't go hungry but I wasn't 100% satisfied either. For the quality, it was very good and I recommend it. But for the rest, everyone can draw their own conclusions.

This restaurant serves great food and has even better service. The menu offers a nice selection of dishes, and the wine menu is just as equally impressive. The octopus is hands down the best I’ve ever had, and the shiitake mushrooms are delicious too. The beef cheeks have a nice bite to them and are very tender. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back for more in the near future. Highly recommended!

Todo sobre nuestra experiencia fue tan maravilloso! Servicio fabuloso! Las bebidas eran únicas y deliciosas y el aperitivo de cola amarilla era tan bueno! Yo tenía la lubina y mi marido tenía la mejilla de ternera. Deliciosa. El postre era tan único y sabroso. En general, toda la experiencia fue memorable y llena de sabor. Lo recomendaría altamente, altamente!

This project by Henrique Sá Pessoa is located in a hotel near the Central Station. The atmosphere is contemporary and the space is spacious. Here we can find the classic flavours of our cuisine, without any make-up, with Henrique's mastery, with special mention to the tuna tataki and the scallops. The seafood rice, although very tasty, was lacking in balance between the two components. Too much rice and not enough seafood, which means that after a certain point (too soon) all you eat is rice. The desserts are unlikely and a bit risky. The service, although friendly, was not the most professional, with an excess of amateurism and little commitment. I also have a negative note about the lack of willingness to control less well-trained customers who use mobile phones with sound to watch films during their meal. When I mentioned this to PR, I said I couldn't do anything when, in fact, I can and should do everything. What you need is the will. As a general note, I would like to congratulate the kitchen team, who I made a point of complimenting, and I would like to emphasize the absolute importance of the dining room so that Henrique's space meets the same level of demand that he surely desires. Este projecto de Henrique Sá Pessoa está inserido num hotel junto da Estação Central. O ambiente é contemporâneo e o espaço amplo. Podemos aqui encontrar os sabores clássicos da nossa gastronomia, sem maquilhagem, com a mestria do Henrique, com destaque para o tataki de atum e para as vieiras. O arroz de marisco, apesar de muito saboroso, pecava pelo desequilíbrio entre os dois componentes. Muito arroz e pouco marisco, o que faz com que a partir de certo momento (demasiado cedo) apenas se coma arroz. Sobremesas improváveis e um pouco arriscadas. O serviço, embora simpático, não foi dos mais profissionais com excesso de amadorismo e pouco empenho. Nota também negativa para a pouca vontade em controlar clientes menos bem formados que usam telemóveis com som para verem filmes durante a refeição. Quando referi esse facto à RP disse nada poder fazer quando, na verdade, pode e deve fazer tudo. É preciso é ter vontade. Como nota global, deixo os meus parabéns à equipa de cozinha, que fiz questão de cumprimentar, e reforço a absoluta importância da sala para que este espaço do Henrique tenha o mesmo grau de exigência que ele seguramente deseja. E nós também…

Tonight is the last night we stayed in Amsterdam. In order to leave a memorable trip. My friend and I decided to try the Arca restaurant. We ordered two main courses, one octopus with mashed sweet potato, one fish with mashed potatoes. One salad and dessert to share. The main courses are good. The salad is ordinary. The dessert is not our cup of tea. (I should know ahead if I see horseradish in the dessert sauce. But I was too curious to see how the chef would make it. ) First of all, it's fine to charge the bread. (In Spain, they always charge bread even without putting it in their menu. At least Arca wrote in the menu. It's 8 euro with the spread). Then I was asking if they have "refill" for the bread. The waitress was happy to give me another one. Unfortunately she didn't tell me that they will charge me 4 euro for that small piece of extra bread. After we received our bill, the most unreasonable part is that they charge us a "water fee" for 9 euro each. We only ordere one bottle of water. When I was questioning the bill, he told me "the water fee is charging by person, not by bottle. If we drink 9 bottles, the charge will be the same." Who the hell will drink 9 bottles of water per meal? We felt robbed. If we know they want to charge that much in advance. At least we can order something else to drink. Then we decided not to leave any tips. This trip, we ate at two different Michelin star restaurants in France, nothing like this. Is this a Dutch thing? Or just Arca's own behavior? I don't know. Anyone who wants to eat in Arca, must beware of it.

Located inside a very hip hotel, the food is very good.

Restaurante muy bien amueblado, muy agradable poder ver la cocina y todo el personal trabajando preparando los platos. Comida sabrosa, sabrosa, justo. Personal amable. Precio elevado, teniendo en cuenta que como servicio me habría esperado un servicio impecable, pero no fue así: vinieron dos veces a pedirnos tanto bebidas como comida porque no había suficiente comunicación entre el personal, ni en absoluto las mesas preguntaban si querías pedir/tener pan y nada para poner tu bolsa.

Very well furnished restaurant, very nice to be able to see the kitchen and all the staff at work preparing the dishes. Tasty food, flavorful, just right. Friendly staff. High price, considering that as a service I would have expected an impeccable service, but it was not like that: they came twice to ask us to order both drinks and food because there was not enough communication between the staff, not at all the tables they asked if you wanted to order/have bread and nothing to put your bag on.

We had a delicious meal. The Classico menu was good, but two desserts was too much. Service was good, but the time for consuming the 8 course menu was too short and not well distributed.

Our hotels eatery. Didn't eat there. however, I did have a few drinks. You basically have to walk around the outskirts of the food area to get to the swimming pool, which I felt very weird about. The atmosphere there was lovely. Perfect ambience. Perfect lighting. Food looked great and was a bit pricy in our opinion, that's why we went out. The beers were great but slightly pricy too.

I had a really good time. I found the price / quality ratio really good. A professional, kind and tailored service. The food was delicious. I went to Amsterdam on purpose to try this restaurant and it didn't disappoint!

Restaurante bastante promedio con comida básica y servicio, cobrando precios realmente altos ya que los consumidores son principalmente turistas - que no conocen la ciudad y por lo tanto no tienen perspectiva. A pesar de haber hecho la reserva con semanas de antelación y mencionar que mi esposa estaba embarazada y por lo tanto no podíamos tener ningún alimento crudo en el menú, el restaurante lo ignoró por completo y se negó a ajustar el menú. Después de pasar un buen tiempo insistiendo, el “chef” finalmente estuvo de acuerdo con abrir esta excepción y hacernos este gran favor. Felicitaciones especiales al arrogante recepcionista que nos hizo esperar 10’ en la entrada y nos trató como si nos estuviera haciendo un favor. Los camareros eran agradables y educados. En total, 230 euros por una cena para 2 con calidad comparable para deliveryoo take away.

Rather average restaurant with basic food and service, charging really high prices as consumers are mainly tourists - that don't know the city and therefore dont have perspective. Despite having made the reservation weeks in advance AND mentioning that my wife was pregnant and therefore we couldn’t have any raw food on the menu, the restaurant completely disregarded it and refused to adjust the menu. After spending a good amount of time insisting, the ‘chef’ finally agreed with opening up this exception and doing us this big favour. Special shout out to the arrogant receptionist that kept us waiting 10’ at the entrance and treated us like he was doing us a favour. Waiters though, were nice and polite. Overall, a 230 euro for a dinner for 2 with comparable quality to deliveroo take away.

The service is top, nice environment. I would recommend the bar, the cocktails are really nice. The menu had new dishes for me that matched my taste. I was excited to try Portugese/Asian cuisine. The food however is not the best. Although it looks beautiful, I was expecting a bigger portion. If you happen to get the iberian pork (as shown in the picture) make sure to stay away from that green roll under the bacon. It didn’t match the dish. The texture and taste was soo bad. Also, you can’t modify the sides as it is pre-made, which is understandable, but that is not what I would expect for this price. I don’t regret going but I won’t visit again.

Having become aware of the Gault Mileau, we made our first reservation online at Arca. We were warmly welcomed and invited to have a glass of cava at the bar. great atmosphere at the bar and at the table. we immediately felt at home. Almost fully booked, surrounded by colorful couples and small groups from Amsterdam and half the world, there was a great atmosphere in the restaurant. the food was sensational. although we chose a la carte. What stood out was “posta mirandesa” - a chateaubriand - lightly smoked served in a large pot on thyme and rosemary - to share. including side vegetables and potatoes. super tasty. The wine selection is small but fine. We found a strong Californian chardonnay and were rewarded with a round, buttery, tannic, vanilla-scented and strong white wine. Only the aperol spritz was way too light and we were then charged for the shot that was served (we had complained about the light taste) (a faux pas). but overall great. also the service. we'll be back!

The food was exquisite, the wine pairing complemented the food perfectly, and your care in hosting, Gloria, was the perfect balance of warmth and elegance. It was the perfect evening, thank you, again.

Arca Amsterdam es sin duda un restaurante con grandes ambiciones. Un Michelin - lugar reconocido con ingredientes de primer nivel y un servicio impecable - en ese frente, el equipo merece cinco estrellas. El personal es atento, cálido, y crea una experiencia gastronómica premium. Sin embargo, la comida en sí no alcanza la misma excelencia. En su esfuerzo por destacar, la cocina toma los mejores ingredientes y los transforma en platos complejos y sobreprocesados que carecen de textura y elegancia. ¿El resultado? Una comida que parece más un experimento que una experiencia culinaria refinada. Un restaurante con este nivel de servicio y abastecimiento debe dejar que sus ingredientes brillen en lugar de enmascararlos. En este momento, es una experiencia de tres estrellas, con mucho potencial para convertirse en algo realmente sobresaliente.

This was not good, the plan was to eat here, but after a drink we left. Dirty wine glass, minimal amount of wine and mess when pouring, no nuts like at the other tables, cold service, atmosphereless setting. And that for 10 euros per glass…

Took the menu arrangement with colleagues. Wonderful tasting. Nice friendly service. Delicious wines. Recommended!
