Volendammer vishandel in Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

It was my first time trying this dish because my sister said it’s a typical Amsterdam food and a must-try. I gave it a try, and the fish was raw, fresh, and slightly salty. I would definitely eat this again when I visit the Netherlands.

Trying Herring for the first time; it’s really good. The gentleman served it with Smile and welcoming attitude. I’d definitely come back and recommend it as well.

Cash only, but there is an ATM in the corner only a min walk. Harring was not bad, but also not special. What disturbed me most was the behavior of the two older men at the counter. When I asked to pay, they laughed loudly with mocking expressions. Only then did they say it was cash-only (there was no sign indicating this). One of them added, “you can wash my feet,” implying I wouldn’t be able to pay. They later asked where I’m from and laughed again. I’m very disappointed by their service and behaviours. They can, and should, do better.

Small place on a narrow street near Dam Square. They specialize in brined herring sandwiches (harrings), which are delicious. There's little space if you want to eat in, but luckily there was a free table at the time. The breaded fish was also very good. Reasonable prices and good service from the staff.

The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cute. However, the hygiene is a bit lacking. The male owner smokes and cooks without washing his hands.

Great fresh herring in a bun. Super tasty as always. Only downside is it’s cash only, had to go to the ATM, which is not great. However the herring was delicious.

Aunt is kind and the Haring sandwich is not bad at all but it is very salty You can enjoy it for cheaper than buying it at a restaurant. Haring sandwich + codfish fries + cola + water = 14.75 euros

Kibbeling, herring are very delicious. You won't find anything better or cheaper in Amsterdam!!!

I never knew raw sardines and pickles went so well together! It was a really delicious sandwich. The owner was very kind to me and helped me with my poor English. I highly recommend it.

This restaurant is truly authentic Dutch. I had a raw sardine sandwich with soft buns, and homemade pickled cucumber and onion. Simple, but so tasty. Honestly, it was my first time eating raw sardine, and it made me so happy. Now, I'm a fan of Dutch food! The owner-chef was also amazing — cheerful, friendly, and laid-back. I feel so lucky to have met him and to be living here.

It is one of the cute places where you can go in a fast food concept to taste the famous Dutch fish delicacies. The shop is very small, seating is very limited. Luckily we were able to sit down. I preferred haring and kibbeling, made from herring. Even though Haring is called raw fish, it is actually the same as our lakerda. In summary, I left satisfied with what I ate. I recommend Volendammer Vishandel, located on one of the streets that cross the road between the main station and Dam Square, to those who want to eat seafood. Unfortunately, credit cards are not accepted.

Authentic stand and original Herring!

My herring destination I am in Amsterdam. It is not the food stand so you have the warmth. Good herring & eels with a can of Heineken is always refreshing.

This spot was really disappointing, especially since I had been looking forward to trying it during my trip to Amsterdam. The fried fish wasn’t very fresh, and we actually saw the employee microwave it to heat it up. The sauce tasted like it came from a bottle, and the fish was lukewarm, not crispy like fried fish should be. I was disappointed, but I did like the location. I might recommend trying the herring or something that isn’t pre-fried, as that’s all I tried, and I’m sure they have other great options on the menu! One bonus, though, was that the fried fish boat was only about 5 euros, which was probably one of the cheapest things I found while in Amsterdam for the weekend.

The prices of the meals in the store are very affordable. The prices are clearly marked. It is very convenient to order. At first, I only ordered a herring and fried fish for 9.5 euros. The herring is really fresh and delicious, and the meat is plump. Especially the pickles in the store are really delicious. I later ordered another portion. The boss is very nice and I can tell there are many local customers. I will eat there once every day when I travel in Amsterdam

I was worried about living things, so I ordered a Kibeling. I would have liked just the Kibeling, but the order didn't go well and it came out stuck in the bread. I expected the fried food to be crispy, but I was surprised to find that it was already ready-made. The old man running the store is also unfriendly and his words difficult to understand, so it's a mystery why he gets such good reviews... Payment is by cash only. Japanese fries are much tastier, so I don't recommend them at all.

A small, unmissable place to try a typical Dutch sandwich! The specialty, haring (herring cured in brine), can be ordered with bread or alone. Additionally, they sell fried catfish, salmon, cod, etc. Be careful they only accept cash!! You can eat there, if you find a place or take away. Definitely a must-see place.

Probably walked by this shop a dozen times during our stays in Amsterdam in March and May, 2022 and there always seemed to be a line out the door. That generally means something good and I agree, it was. We ate the smoked eel, herring, and kibbling and all were delicious. The staff were also beyond expectations with their friendly yet professional conduct.

Very good shop for Dutch fresh herring plus many other delicacies such as smoked and cold fried fish, of several varieties seafood ,such as cold shrimp of a few varieties and several delicious.seafood salads.

Après 5 jours à Amsterdam, nous avons été très heureux de découvrir ce petit lieu typique. Nous avons enfin pu goûter au hareng qui était très bon dans son pain avec les cornichons et les oignons. Mention spéciale pour l'anguille fumée qui méritait son prix car vraiment délicieuse. Le propriétaire est adorable et ce débrouille bien en français et dans d'autres langues.

Aringa freschissima e signore dietro al bancone simpatico e olandese, non sembra di essere a uno sputo dalla Damrak. Inoltre tre tipi di pane tra cui scegliere che vista la città è un lusso.

Ne pas s'arrêter au cadre un peu vieillot et spartiate. Les serveurs et cuisiniers sont très sympathiques et souriant. Le poisson est frais, je recommande les croquettes et le hareng mis dans le pain comme un hot dog bon rapport qualité prix à essayer absolument quand on passe à Amsterdam.
