Ayo Makan! in Oostelijke Eilanden/Kadijken

I'd give it 3.9 stars. I've been coming here almost weekly since it opened, so I thought it was time for a comprehensive review. Initially, it was extremely good. A very friendly, hardworking Indonesian family ran the place, and the food was of excellent quality. I think 10 euros for a meal with quality meat is a good price, considering you'd easily pay more than 5 euros for a container of meat in the supermarket, and even then, it's full of water and you have to prepare it yourself. I find other reviews here about it not being truly Indonesian a bit weak. I'm no expert, but I think; you don't get "real Chinese" at a Chinese restaurant either. What matters most to me is that the food is tasty and high-quality, and that's what it is. I also think the food could be a bit spicier, but most Dutch people can't handle that, so I completely understand why they do it that way. Perhaps it's an idea to choose one dish and make it really spicy? Now for my drawbacks, which are why I'm not giving it 5 stars. Unfortunately, the quality has declined over the past year. It feels a bit like once the good reviews came in, everything was replaced with a cheaper alternative. That's understandable, but a shame. The container the food came in has been replaced by a more awkward and cheaper one, the hardworking, friendly family has been replaced by cheap students, and the food itself is also of lower quality. For example: the rendang used to be tender and cut into small pieces. Now, it's large, hard chunks. Leaves that are added during cooking for flavor but aren't pleasant to eat used to be expertly fished out. These days, they're simply left in. All in all, it's still a very good meal for a reasonable price, but I do hope the good quality is maintained and doesn't deteriorate much further.

This takeout is a real insult to Indonesian cuisine. I lived there for a while myself, so I know what kind of flavors can surprise you... I've tried this takeout several times and have been utterly disappointed... sorry, someone has to say this!

Delicious takeaway and not expensive

We really enjoyed a delicious Indonesian meal. We had a bit of everything. It tasted really fresh and authentic. The service was excellent! The shop looks beautiful. It's well-organized, and it's easy to choose the dishes. Good value for money.

The food is stored in a bain-marie and therefore tastes like hospital or airline food. Tasteless. I think the food is decent quality. But because of the way they store it (warm all day), it loses all its flavor. It would be better if they simply kept the food cold in containers and used a microwave, like all their colleagues do.

The food was great, the servers were very polite and friendly, the place was clean and the portion was more than fair for the price. Excellent experience, will definitely visit again!

Taste is 75% authentic Indonesian food. Service was super excellent , specially a small worker who is very friendly. He explained well every menu!

This place is really solid. It’s right below my flat (how lucky am I?!) and I order it for pickup. The food tastes very fresh and is super flavourful. Also fairly priced! And great for all dietaries - gluten free, vegan, veg, etc. I’ll order again and again. Highly recommend!

Amazing service from gio and food 10/10

So, so glad to have this place in our neighbourhood - I come here for take-out a couple times a month when I'm feeling lazy and still want a healthy meal. Staff is super friendly and quick, portions generous and tasty, and it won't break the bank, the prices are way better than when ordering in. I have no idea what some of these negative reviews are about, I've been here many many times and it's pretty consistent. Can recommend to all!

Growing up with Indonesian cuisine (thanks to my father), I find the taste of my youth here. I live in Belgium but regularly visit Amsterdam. Every time I am there I have to go there. Certainly the somewhat spicier dishes are real childhood nostalgia. The place is not very big but incredibly tasty. Portions are certainly sufficient to fill a possible “after-hunger”. I do take-away…

After two disappointments from the last few times. Accidentally ordered online this time because of a slightly too attractive 1+1 deal. Sounded good, looked great but then came the first bite. No herbs, no taste, just… bland. The portions were surprisingly large, I have to admit. With our own herbs it was still doable, but that really shouldn't be necessary. In short: filling, but not surprising. Fine for those who like bland, but for me? Once is enough. I won't fall for it again.

Good option for a quick take away dinner. Lots of options (also vegeterian!), tasty food, and good amount for a fair price!

I'm writing this review while I'm still eating and I really never do that. This is -by far- the worst Indo I have ever eaten. The noodles are tasteless, the rendang is tasteless, chicken is tasteless, sayur lodeh had no coconut milk and was 98% chunks of half-raw tasteless cabbage and I could go on. The only positive: no plastic packaging. My Indonesian grandmother is turning in her grave saying this is called Indonesian. To cry.

Should have checked the reviews before ordering… worst Indonesian food that I’ve ever had in my whole life. The chicken dishes (ayam kare & ajam kecap)tasted as if they were just boiled without adding salt. The beef rendang.. it was horrible, usually my fav but this one looked as if it’s well-seasoned, no.. tasteless and super dry. The only ‘edible’ meat dish was the beef with soy sauce thanks to the tiny bit of sweetness from the soy sauce. Now the veggies, cold and tasteless. Well done ayo makan for ruining my Friday dinner!!!

Gosh, "ayam kecap" is supposed to represent this. Just looks like cooked chicken, and tastes like it too. Judge the photo for yourself. 16 euros for cooked chicken and the aubergines and tempeh also seem just cooked. Really scandalous

The food arrived cold and tasteless. I see that we have already complained about it, so I suggest that the owner check how it can be improved. Definitely needs improvement. And also a bit expensive for a small portion

The dishes of Ayo Makan! are delicious! The rice table for 10 people was delivered to your home in boxes that could go straight into the oven, with clear instructions for heating. Price-quality is top. We enjoyed it and will definitely come back.

Solid fast casual Indonesian food. Mainly a take out place but had a few stools at a bar facing the street/canal so I ate there. Would recommend if you're in the neighborhood.

I really thought this was great! Delicious rendang and lodeh and then - if you feel like it and there is room - eat it on the street with something to drink. Or else you can just pick it up and eat it at home or somewhere else. If I'm in the area I will definitely come back to eat other dishes.

Tried a meal for the first time yesterday. I opted for a nasi rames ketjil to try it out. Unfortunately the meal was a bit disappointing. The sayur lodeh actually consisted of boiled vegetables without any taste, the braise was tender but a bit bland, just like the nasi koening. Really missed the herbs. Maybe it was the choice of dishes. Although it was a ketjil (small) meal, I thought the quantity was a bit small. Don't know if it's worth repeating...

Worst satay ever from a store. Indo unworthy.

We drove past here and drove back specifically to eat here. Friendly people and it all looks very cheerful, cozy and clean! We ordered food for 49 euros and sat outside to eat. Unfortunately, my husband's fried rice was too hard and his Soto Ayam lukewarm to cold. So the last one went home because we thought it would be a shame (and too expensive) to leave it alone. I ate his rice with the little leftover peanut sauce we got. So it still went quite well. I have seen the authentic dishes, but I think the prices are expensive (a can of Fanta 3.15 euros). Then the taste and price ratio must be good. For example, I don't think you need to earn that much on your cans of drinks because if it's good you already put enough of this on the food and it's not cheap anyway. For example, the soup served in carton is 8.50 euros (and lukewarm to cold). The cardboard cutlery doesn't help either. You eat soup with a real spoon and not from cardboard (something for a picnic, beach, on the road, etc.). All in all, we did eat the food, but I'm afraid we won't come back here again. This is not so much due to over-fried rice or lukewarm soup with a wooden disposable spoon that is too small. But what if the owner also asks me, when I bring our baskets back in, if everything was okay and I politely say that the fried rice was too hard, and then just shrugs his shoulders?? Then why will we come back again? Then don't ask how the food was. Want to get an honest answer and then do nothing with it? Therefore 2 stars. This service is not okay.

Best quality indonesian food i’ve had in Amsterdam. Takes a beat at other places that are oily and fatty. Quality ingredients that stay tasty even after reheating at home which you’ll be doing because the portions are sizeable!

so good!! enak sekali! recommend it to everyone, a very good mixed Indonesian/Indian store. the cook is from padang so be sure to order those dishes :)) i also saw some bad reviews that advertise other shops; don't worry about it.

Really delicious Indonesian food! This afternoon I bought food for 5 people (2 adults and 3 semi-adults :-), put it in the microwave and just had a delicious meal. I think we can eat it another night. I'm soooo glad I live close to here.

The food here is SO delicious! Today I got it for the second time and I am again amazed by the subtlety of all the flavors and how they explode together in my mouth. Spicy and softness, delicious!🤤 In terms of quantity, I can eat this twice. Maybe I'm not a big eater, but my bowl was full Haha, I didn't know the box could go in the oven. Even better 😁

5 stars for your responses, especially to the very sour 1 star reviews from so-called experts of you, your kitchen and your furnishings. Anyone who rewards the meals with 1 star either cooks the best food themselves, has been hired by a competitor for a free meal or simply has no taste. Go to the supermarket and pick up a can or pack of nasi goreng, nice and cheap and certainly good for a 5 star review.

Very tasty food! Good portion and fantastic taste. My grandmother is from Indonesia so I am critical. Not picked up this well in a long time. Minus why 3 stars: the site states that they serve nice and warm so you can eat straight away at home, unfortunately not true. Lukewarm to cold. Correct point. To be repeated!

My wife has a pop up store nearby and had take away. She never visit the place before and ask to make nice mix. It was epic! The best taste in long time, the chef must love his profession. The delicate layers and nuances in the rendang and nasi and the veggies. Amazing! And this for little penny. Thank you so much! We walked past here yesterday and just had to go inside because of what we could see from outside 😊. It all looked so good! I ended up going home with 5 chicken satays (not big, but that doesn't matter) and a piece of chicken leg. It was super delicious 😋!! Case looked good and clean. The staff was friendly and patient. Definitely worth repeating. Also especially for my mother who lives around the corner.

GadoGado deliciously crispy. Peanut sauce could be spicier and tastier. Indian croquette very well filled and authentic in taste! Friendly staff.

Maybe it is not the pure taste of Indonesian Food but at least you still can taste and eat Indonesian Food especially those who missing the original recipe. As for me, I order the Gado Gado and surprisingly they also have Teh Botol. Enak dan Kangen Banget 😍

Bami with rendang 2 types of vegetables. 2 very thin satay skewers and a lemper that remained rock hard after heating. Food was tasteless and I am used to better rendang. I won't buy here again.. 18 euros in total. If anyone wants a free cup? Pick up now..

Satisfied! Was tasty, price is good. Sufficient quantity. And very important: there are vegan options. As far as I'm concerned, these could be expanded, but yes, a great start for us. Keep it up!

Nu paar keer eten afgehaald. Aardig personeel. Lekker eten. Hele goede prijs/kwaliteit verhouding zeker voor Amsterdamse begrippen.

Top! New place in the neighborhood so decided to come by last week. I can't eat gluten so asked what was available and to my surprise practically everything is gluten free, plus the owner is very knowledgeable about allergies and intolerances, putting me at ease. At home I finally got to try the food and was so pleasantly surprised! The flavors are amazing! The 2 people I was with also really enjoyed the meal. This is definitely a place I'll go back to to try the other foods they have. They also sell sauces and chips to take home. Recommend!

heerlijk vers en hartverwarmend eten..

Ik woon in Den Haag maar ik moest gisteren in Amsterdam zijn. Via via had ik de tip gekregen om deze nieuwe toko uit te proberen. Ik ben zo enthousiast!!!! Ter plaatse heb ik het hele menu uitgeprobeerd. Daarna heb ik voor thuis om vanavond op te eten 2x Rames Sajamba Plus gekocht. Dat is nasi of bami goreng met een ei, 2 vlees en 2 groente gerechten. Ayo makan onderscheidt zich van andere toko's, los van de authentieke smaak, door middel van speciale vernieuwende kooktechnieken en voedselconservering. Het eten is altijd vers. Wat ik persoonlijk heel lekker vind is dat de groenten niet al te doorgekookt zijn. Als je in je boontjes bijt, krijg je nog een "krak". Ik vind het belangrijk dat de vitaminen nog in m'n voedsel zitten. Ik ben geholpen door een alleraardigste meneer die veel kon vertellen over het eten. Voor mijn doen ben ik lang gebleven. Al die tijd was de toko steeds vol met klanten (veelal uit de buurt) die daar hun maaltijd kwamen halen. Al met al een aanwinst de buurten Oostenburg en Wittenburg maar zeker ook veel het hele centrum van Amsterdam. Andere pluspunten: 100% halal, er wordt gebruik gemaakt van zoveel mogelijk vegan ingredienten, ze denken na over sustainability dus ze kijken naar verpakkingsmateriaal en de wijze van koken. Aanrader: de jackfruit (rendang).

Eten viel tegen: Groentes waren niet op smaak, vlees was droog en de rijst was doorgekookt, helaas geen aanrader

Heel erg lekker . Wel de maaltijd van 15 euro nemen , van 11 euro is te weinig . Goede smaak en vers en aardige eigenaar . Staat een rij voor de deur in weekenden , dus wees op tijd !

Ik had hoge verwachtingen, want het ziet er leuk uit van buiten, maar het eten viel tegen. Er was niet heel veel keuze, het vlees was droog, de aubergine was hard en de nasi had weinig smaak. Daarnaast was het kipspiesje vrij marginaal en het pittige eten niet pittig. Jammer!

Wat een fijne toevoeging aan de buurt. Heerlijke maaltijden afgehaald. Goede hoeveelheid en heel lekker. Gado gado is een aanrader.

Heerlijk Indonesisch eten, warm opgediend - geen magnetrons - en meenemen, een uitkomst. Heerlijke kip en rundvlees gerechten aangevuld met allerlei groentes, teveel om op te noemen. De saté en rendang zijn super! Het smaakt me zoals het ook in Indonesië smaakt…

Nieuwe aanwinst in de buurt! Net eten afgehaald (Rames) en het was echt heerlijk. Het is vers, lekkere pittige opties, goeie porties. Komen zeker terug!

Mooie zaak met vriendelijk en relaxte mensen. Draait net twee weken maar was al lekker druk met afhalers. Wij hebben heerlijk pittig eten meegenomen en hebben er van genoten! Komen zeer zeker terug als we weer in Amsterdam komen logeren. Heel veel succes met jullie zaak.

Erg lekker eten in een mooie zaak. Keuze uit allerlei duidelijk met liefde bereide, Indonesische gerechten. Eigenlijk afhaal, maar met een paar plekken om het daar meteen op te eten. Aanrader!

Ernst Graaf is een erg goede kok met originele Indische recepten. Het heerlijke eten is ook in een direct klaar concept verwerkt met bakjes. Geen magnetron. Heerlijk. Ik ga altijd voor de scherp varianten en die hadden goede smaak. De scherpe garnalen kroepoek erbij. Ik ga er nog vaak heen!
