We have eaten here before but today it was disappointing. It started with us having to wait 5 minutes before we were led to our table. Ordered a portion of olives, didn't get it, had to ask again, same with a coke. Starter came quickly, was fine, asparagus was cold but probably that's how it was supposed to be. We arrived at 10 past half past 6, at half past 8 we still didn't have our main course, in other words a very long wait. Main courses were okay but no more than that, chicory was much too tough, meat had a lot of fat on it and the other meat dish was almost impossible to cut. After this we just asked for the bill, no warm feeling. More like a food shed, I think there were 6 tables in the middle filled with large groups. At the beginning the waiter said, we have the whole evening to make up for the start, unfortunately that didn't work. In the past there was a top manager, everything went smoothly, now I had the feeling that there was no one present who fulfilled this task. By the way, there was one lady who did a fantastic job serving, but you can't do it on your own.

We seriously cant understand the low rating. The service and ambience was top notch in regards to the pricing. 4/5 for the food, what was still good. Only the beetroot carpaccio was a bit "boring" but stil good.

Follow-up review – Cantine x Binnenvisser (May 2025). We returned to Cantine de Caron, this time for a special collaboration with Binnenvisser and what a party it was again. Expectations were high, and they were truly exceeded on all fronts. The 4-course menu (plus amuse and finale) was simply brilliant. From the elegant amuse of cabbage with black garlic to the tomato tarte tatin, crispy, sweet and sour and full of flavour. The grilled scallops with chicken neck garum and that amazing sauce were so delicious that we would have liked to lick the plate clean. Then came the lamb neck with lamb's ear and whey sauce, perfectly cooked and full of umami. The dessert of asparagus sorbet with crème Suisse and the fresh, floral finale concluded this spring celebration perfectly. And spring was well and truly here, great!! The Domaine Le Fay d’Homme Muscadet 2024, presented by a proud sommelier, matched the dishes beautifully. The atmosphere was fantastic again. The service was just as great as last time!! How wonderful it is to see people at work who enjoy what they do and who really radiate that and can also enjoy it as a team. They were attentive, warm and with sincere attention. The location remains unique: high ceilings, beautifully set tables and the view of the open kitchen provide an almost Parisian ambiance in the heart of Amsterdam. In short: Cantine continues to innovate and surpass itself and is now in my top three. We will definitely come back!!

Cantine de Caron is such a nice place! I love the interior, the athmosphere and the service and food is just great! I enjoyed it every time I visited this beautiful place. One of my favorite restaurants!

very disappointing experience! Inattentive staff, very salty starter, raw (literally red) meat instead of medium raw cote d beef. our main course was forgotten to be passed on to the kitchen, which meant we had to wait 1 hour for our food. my wife's vegetarian risotto was not cooked, our meat rare instead of medium. drinks were forgotten. in general a very bad experience. too expensive for what you get served at the table. This was our first time and also our last time. We recommend not to dine here. Kind regards Hugo Garcia

Fancy Cafe Restaurant Amsterdam if I may.. more posh, but has the same industrial vibe, nice menu, bit high on price compared to the portions but nice place all together!

Can only describe it as a restaurant where they have they exact food you’re craving for. Simple but the best version of that if you know what I mean, not too much blabla

I had a wonderful evening but unfortunately, not thanks to the restaurant. There were 6 of us, we waited 40 minutes for the starter, then 20 minutes for the main course, which arrived lukewarm/cold… The service was pleasant but it depended on the servers. A final note of ~55€ per person starter main course dessert wine, which remains very reasonable, but ultimately logical... I expected better given the reviews on the establishment.

Hot day and I was afraid it would be stuffy inside, but that was not the case. It's noisy but you can still hear each other (there were 4 of us at a table). Service, very friendly and polite!

This place is a true bastion of elegance and charm. Here you will be welcomed with warmth and attention and the service is of the highest level. But most importantly, the dishes you taste here will make you discover new facets of cooking. I highly recommend you visit this place. Unfortunately, there aren't many such places.

The menu was the same as always, nothing exciting and this time the food wasn’t good, especially the salty creme brûlée, it was like eating an omelette with caramel. Very dissatisfied with the food and the service. The only positive thing is the space, always beautiful!

The service and food is very very nice. Everyone is so kind and genuine. The waitress made a cute mistake while ordering the food, and they said all beverages and extra dishes are free! This restaurant absolutely change my view for the city of Amsterdam, the bad weather can’t cover the shines of people’s kindness!

Overall just below expectations from a restaurant which is part of the Caron group. - Their house wine (Lowel) was on the wine list, but not available. Then remove it from the list or tell customers in advance. - Ordered oysters which was served with slice of lemon. The lemons slice was full of green plastic pieces from the cutting board which was used. - Steak with pepper sauce. Found the sauce way to sweet and consistency was almost like porridge. Does not get anywhere close to the pepper sauce of Raoul’s in NYC. - 30 mins after ordering my Tarte Tatin I asked the waiter if it is still coming. Around 10 minutes later it arrived. Waiter or kitchen clearly forgot. All and all not a great experience and at a time when restaurant was only half full.

Super loud acoustics but great building, greasy & heavy food , only 1 vegetarian dish-a risotto which was too watery and heavy, the previous cabbage dish was off the menu, that was a decent one. Overall the quality of this place has went down since it’s opening

Delicious meal with two areas for improvement: 1) acoustics. Effort to have a conversation 2) additional payment for a main course menu is hefty: €12 and €17 pp

We had a nice evening. However, I found the price-quality ratio of this experience disproportionate. Some staff members were not attentive, and others tried to make up for it. The starter was fantastic, I had the steak tartare. The main course was a bit disappointing, but was okay (bavette). This was because the meat to pepper sauce ratio was not good. Way too much sauce…. All in all it was a nice evening and a nice experience. I just think it's too much money for the service you get. That's a shame, because I think it is something that can be solved.

We had diner at this French cuisine restaurant with a group of 10+ people. The service was efficient and I always am surprised when they just know what food to give you without asking. The food itself tasted great as well. We shared some starters which were spread over the table in just the right quantity. And then we had individual main courses (with a shared option for fish). The taste was great! We all enjoyed it and we almost had no left overs, which says a lot! Then the deserts were another highlight. Some of us couldn’t finish as we just were so stuffed from all the amazing food. In terms of atmosphere, to me it felt a bit “cold” industrial. Hence I rated that 4 stars against 5 stars for the food and service.

The park-side location is fantastic, but getting there via public transportation is a hassle—expect a long walk, sometimes in the dark. Stepping inside, the dimly lit, cavernous industrial space feels like a welcome refuge. With our reservations in place, we were swiftly led to a table along the far wall, offering a somewhat oblique view of the kitchen. We didn’t mind—it felt private. We opted for the €45 prix fixe and added a side of roasted root vegetables, which surprisingly turned out to be the standout dish of the night. The mackerel appetizer was fresh and well-executed, while the beef tartare struck a nice balance in seasoning. The weever filet was both visually striking and intriguingly minimalist. The only misstep was the beef bavette, which came out far too rare for a requested medium rare—something must have been lost in translation. Desserts were pleasant but unremarkable, except for the profiterole, which was shockingly oversized. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable dinner, made even better by the warm, attentive service.

Excellent atmosphere and service. But it's all about the food. It's not possible that you can get a well-fried but tough bavette for 28 euros. The profiterolle(s) turns out to be an enormous chocolate ball that resembles a moorhead. If you drink some wine with it, you pay 100 pp for a mediocre meal.

Fantastic experience at Cantine de Caron! The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh ingredients and well-balanced flavors. The service was warm and attentive, making us feel welcome from start to finish. The ambiance is unique—industrial yet charming in its own way. Highly recommend booking in advance, as it gets busy. A great spot for a relaxed and flavorful dining experience!

A main course without side dishes costs around €25. I chose a vegetarian main course with celery and blue cheese. The food was delicious - BUT: the portion was so small that I wasn't even remotely full. I had 3 half slices of celery with sauce on the plate. The portion was tiny. I was very disappointed. For the price, the main course should fill you up. Without a starter ordered in advance and side dishes to accompany the main course, I wouldn't have been full!

The restaurant was great! Located inside a unique space arranged in a simple, open and classy way. Curtains and mirrors are great touches adding an intimate theatrical effect. Loved the lighting as well. Ordered the three course and it was full of surprises. Starter: hispi cabbage with very tender texture, whole hazelnuts and nutty sauce adding a controlled richness; only drawback was it was too big of a portion, very filling ! Main: North sea weever, first time trying this fish, feel like I was eating a fat crab leg no needing to peel the shell. Lemoned potato adding in refreshing intervals, dried leaf introducing a crunch, and again great sauce. The presentation was also very cute. Dessert: Clafoutis very smooth and satisfying, well controlled sweetness with the ice cream. I was there alone and everything was perfect. The overall experience was delicacy in a homely way. Ended with a beautiful ginger tea!

Beautiful place, attractive white-covered tables. The staff is not only relaxed but also well informed about what you eat and what wine goes with it. In short: highly recommended!

Very good dinner, informal atmosphere with pleasant service who explained all the information about the options well, you can taste wines, which is also very nice to make a suitable choice.

Great dining experience in locals Amsterdam. Big old turbine type hall with a really friendly team, an open kitchen and great food. I particularly enjoyed the Weaver fish.

Atypical place. Canteen atmosphere so noisy but we feel a relaxed atmosphere and good atmosphere so it's pleasant (if you like that). Good dishes, kitchen open to the restaurant room. We will recommend it to those around us on occasion.

Quality food, good atmosphere, kind service and perfect location.

Beautiful space and food is generally of good quality. Only a three-course meal was available, with 2-3 options per course. Two of the main dishes had a supplemental charge of 25-35% on top of the already high price. Maybe in the weekends you can eat a la carte or have more options (?). Starter and main dish were small but tasteful, except for the fries that are the same as in McDonalds. Desert is mostly meant to fill you up. Service Amsterdam-style, so don’t expect anything special.

A food factory.. Mass produced. Tasteless, salty and cold. A massive food hall. Horrible acoustics. Suitable for bachelor parties. When 4 of the 6 of us had issues with the food, there was no effort made to change, compensate.. only the typical excuses. Staff are ok, but evidently plagued with kitchen issues. Several groups at tables near to ours had similar issues. Thanks to the good humour of our group, the evening was 'gezellig'. But, management must limit the number of diners and attend to the kitchen issues. Success is often destroyed by success. And above all, if a client has an issue, believe it and respond in a positive manner.

Food was very mwah (and that’s a mild judgement), the main meat was rather chewy despite ordering the premium cote du boeuf. Service endearing but not very competent. Wine was good. Concept is better than execution.

The room has difficult acoustics. It was busy and there was a lot of noise around you. There was a very large group when we were there. You must like that! Paying for tap water remains a point of criticism. 3.50 for a bottle. And then present it as a 'water package'. It seems as if you are offered the water as a service for nothing. Don't be told you're paying for it. Not so neat. Food was delicious.

Had lunch with a group of 11 people. Super helpful staff, good wine advice (they have a very nice menu, I think only French wine and reasonably priced, though). Delicious food, cote de boeuf was beautiful but the sea bass was also beautifully prepared. Large space, not suitable if you have a romantic date or something like that.

The tartare was chewy and the sides, pumpkin and salad very bland. Its a cantine as the name indicates, tons of people, but they do seemed to enjoy themselves. The staff was trying to do a good job.

You can hear each other well, no echoing with such a high ceiling, even when it is busy. Very friendly, attentive and competent service. We have really been pampered. The food was fantastic, but the portions were not super large. Very tasty. All in all a wonderful evening. Would love to come back again.

A fantastically consistent restaurant for its lovely French food, its super friendly and efficient staff and for the babbling, bustling (and somehow cosy for such a big building!) atmosphere. I really like it here in the middle of the Westerpark, always have an excellent experience. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful evening at Cantine on Saturday evening, with both different dishes from the three-course menu. The onion soup was a flavor bomb and stood out, and the maitake with millefeuille was our favorite. The atmosphere was good, and the chefs made a calm and professional impression in the open kitchen. We enjoyed it and would love to come back again!

A lovely card, my friend translated it for me in Dutch. Tip, Maybe you can put all the French words in Dutch on the map. I and many Dutch people cannot read or speak French and have absolutely no idea what the French words in your menu are. That's a shame.

We had reserved with a large group of adults as there were 14 of us. No problem according to the restaurant; nice! The food was very good, but the service here is downright bad. There was no time to pay attention to us, and when we did, the wine was poured wildly, with several shots ending up on the tablecloth. Then we switched from white to red wine, without exchanging glasses. One of the waiters was very irritated when we had questions about the menu or the food. A shame, because it is a beautiful place with good food, but they cannot handle large groups

Disappointed… the place is pretty, the dishes are ok, the dessert is very good but the service is not up to par. We were ignored from the start, when entering the restaurant we were waiting politely, the waiters looked at us out of the corner of their eyes but not a hello or a smile. Finally I walked over to ask for a table. Then slow service, I had to get up to ask for bread (they saw that I was waiting to speak to them but did not come) Finally the waitress still asked us at the end if we liked the dessert, I got up again to ask for the bill. When I was given the bill the waitress told me that the tips were not included...I left nothing, I usually do it with pleasure but here the service really left me with an unpleasant feeling. Damage.

Won't go back. Food was good, just too expensive (therefore 3 stars). Fish dish for 2 persons costs 72 euro's. You get 1 fish to share and a bit of salad on top. That's no fun anymore. I know less expensive restaurants with fine food. Service was great btw.

Very pleasant and delicious food. The only thing I continue to find strange is paying for (tap) water. In addition, I was very surprised that at checkout it was indicated that the voucher did not include tip money, and therefore how much I wanted to pay. If she hadn't asked, I would definitely have given a tip, but now I felt more embarrassed. It must remain a customer's choice.

Very nice place, atmosphere and style inside. Good was great, incredible taste and combinations of everything. We have taken oysters, some starters, main courses and desserts, all were perfect. Instead of this place is not chip (but prices I think more or less like as normal in Amsterdam), it worse it

Top tent. You pay a lot, but the food and service are excellent. Sat outside on the terrace. Good bottle of wine and the 3 course menu. The sea bass was very tasty.

We enjoyed diner at Caron in the beautiful Westerpark three times in the past year (both inside and on the terrace). It's service with a smile. There are some very good French dishes. Quality of food and wines is fine. Try the chicken liver terrine and the pithivier. The place is buzzing and can be busy. But, the prices of both food and wine are relatively high. Which makes this 5 star-potential a 4 star in quality versus price.

Too bad, really on-call staff. Not well trained at all, but friendly. Couldn't pay in cash. Wasn't reported on the site. People who just want to pay in cash, that service should be able to continue. Had to borrow the debit card from friends. Embarrassing situation.. Menu was difficult to read. Never come here again.

A nice atmosphere, but unfortunately the service is so bad that we didn't even get to eat. If you want to wait 5 minutes in a half-empty restaurant before being acknowledged for the first time, this is the place for you. Even trying to order takes a lot of time. The cleanliness is questionable, so we were very surprised to find a gnawed chicken bone from the previous owner. We canceled the visit

Rib eye was not good. A piece of lettuce with a little sauce and a long wait for food. For the location and price I expected more.

We recently dined at de Caron, and it was a thoroughly disappointing experience from start to finish. We had to wait an excessive amount of time just to be seated, despite having a reservation. The service was abysmal; the staff seemed disinterested and inattentive throughout our meal. To add insult to injury, we were charged for bread, which is usually complimentary at most restaurants. They also kept bringing bottled water without asking, only to charge us extra for each one. Our order arrived with multiple mistakes, and when we pointed it out, the staff was unapologetic and slow. Overall, I would not recommend to anyone. There are plenty of better options out there with superior service and transparency in their pricing.

We celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary last night. Upon arrival, the roses that had been delivered were already at our table. We were just seated and the champagne was poured, in accordance with the wish I had shared over the phone. To complete the surprise we received oysters on the house and my gift was brought to our table. My bride was very surprised and very moved. This tent knows what hospitality is and how to facilitate it. Big compliments to the team. The dinner and wine was very good. Mullet tartare and white Burgundy is the combination of summer 2024. Lovely food and great service. Really enjoyed our two dinners here and all we put to our mouths. People and their service were great. Better get a reservation. The space is neither luxurious nor cosy, but it does have its specific charm.
