Cantine is a beautiful spot near Fabrique des Lumières. Service was quick, warm, and attentive. The beef tartare is among the very best I’ve had. Dessert was creative and memorable. Highly recommended.

It is very likely that two of us contracted food poisoning after eating the poussin. Furthermore, €12 for the house wine is very expensive, and charging for tap water that you offer yourself is, as far as we are concerned, unacceptable.

Top tasty food, despite the large old hall, not too loud

I was very disappointed with this restaurant At around 9:10 p.m., I arrived at the restaurant without a reservation and asked at the entrance if there was a table for one. At first, a lady dressed in black greeted me. She said she would check and then went inside the restaurant. A moment later, another staff member wearing an apron came out and told me that there were “no tables available.” She also said that the chef in kitchen was very busy with many orders and that they were unable to have new order. However, apart from the outdoor seating, the inside theres no one dining in there She then added, “There are many other restaurants nearby. You can try one of those instead.” What made the experience even more confusing was that about 30 seconds later, two women walked into the restaurant and were seated (later there has 3 people seated) I was only visiting Amsterdam for three days, and I specifically to here for having dine here. This was the only restaurant I had planned to visit during my Trip. Unfortunately, the way I was treated left me feeling confused and disappointed, and I still don't understand why I was turned away. I don't recommend anyone to visit unless you want to have such an unpleasant rejection. I felt very disappointed. I arrived at the restaurant around 9:10 PM. I didn't have a reservation. I asked at the door if there were any seats. Initially, a woman in black greeted me. She said she would check and then went inside from outside the restaurant. Then a woman in an apron came out and told me that there were currently no tables available, (but ​​the inside was empty except for the tables outside) and that the kitchen was very busy, with many orders being prepared, so they couldn't serve me at the moment. Then he said, "There are many other restaurants over there; you can go check them out." But about 30 seconds later, two women went inside to eat. We went there for dinner with our young child. The atmosphere is lovely, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the food was excellent. We highly recommend it!

If you want to eat vegetarian but your dining companion doesn't, the menu forces you towards extremely expensive meat and fish dishes. It all looks nice, but the hefty bill (and I am quite used to high prices) is not commensurate with the quality.

Disappointed. The food had the intense taste of salt. Salty asparagus, bits of lamb shoulder on a bed of risotto with lots of salt. The taste of salt was covering what might had been a small taste-bite of lamb. The pancetta was good - no salt. The chairs were uncomfortable, our table too close to the one in the back and we kept bumping chairs. Nice people and good environment.

An amazing space, the restaurant is placed in an old machine storage building, gutted out and covered with art. The food was perfectly prepared and the serving was very friendly. We were especially impressed with the depth of the wine list. A beautiful place to eat in Amsterdam.

Cantine in Amsterdam is one of those restaurants that immediately feels like it has a clear identity a strong DNA, a beautiful sense of aesthetics, and a space that sets the tone before the first plate even arrives. What makes the experience stand out is that the food has soul. There is depth, warmth and serious flavour behind every dish. This is not cooking built only around presentation or trends; it is cooking with structure, technique and intention. You can feel that real culinary work is happening behind each plate. The level of preparation is impressive. The stocks, sauces and individual elements are clearly made with care, and every component feels thoughtfully developed. There is precision in the technique, but also generosity in the flavour something that is often much harder to achieve. The lamb with risotto was, without question, one of the highlights: rich, beautifully balanced and deeply satisfying. The langoustine with pickled strawberry was also excellent elegant, sharp, delicate and memorable. What I particularly appreciated is the refined Greek element running through the cooking. It is not obvious or forced; it is subtle, elegant and personal. This gives Cantine a very distinctive character and, in my opinion, separates it from almost anything else currently found in the Netherlands. My recommendation is simple: trust the team, let them guide you, and enjoy the full experience. Cantine is a restaurant with taste, soul and serious culinary intelligence.

It's a shame that this nice restaurant and concept have declined so much. Scallops as a starter, one piece hidden under a huge mountain of lettuce, 14.50 Euros. We also ordered the seasonal vegetables with the main course; they had suggested them themselves, but they only arrived after asking twice, when we were almost finished with everything. We had to send the fries back because they were cold, and recycled a portion of what was left. The new fries didn't arrive until halfway through the main course (very tasty skate wing). Super cozy place, friendly service, but absolutely no control over the quality of the kitchen.

The best of the year!! The vibe, design and food! High ceiling (guess its an old factory building) and open kitchen. We ordered the three courses menu, highly recommend sea bass and sorbet (great mix of spiciness and sour and sweet, something i never tried before). Super good service.

I went out for dinner this evening and left feeling somewhat disappointed. The location is beautiful and the staff friendly, but the food let me down. The main courses (chicken and skate wing) simply lacked flavor. I didn't finish the dessert (sea buckthorn sorbet) either. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but given the restaurant's image, the experience was unfortunately disappointing.

Wow, mini size bites for a jackpot price in a space with bad accoustics. Service was good though, but price / quality is dat from good. Poor veggie options also.

Feels like a bistrot in Paris. Great building-good vibe-nice-easy goin staff. Simple French menu, they do few things and they do them well. Had a steak tartar as a starter with some sourdough, well executed. Pousin was good, but I don't think I had the best bird that night. The other tables had better looking ones. Still, you can't miss with this dish. Their fries and mayonaise are French and good. Reasonable middle range price, 49 for a 3 course menu, but when you are hungry, order sides.

After this restaurant was recommended to us by several people, we went there for dinner. Unfortunately, we were both quite disappointed with the food. The côte de boeuf was practically raw with lots of fatty bits. The fries were far too salty. And the apple tartlet was simply cut in half without any care. That was a real shame. The restaurant wasn't even half full on a weekday evening, so the noise level was pleasant. Nevertheless, there was a fairly long wait before we were served. Unfortunately, we wouldn't go there again, even though the restaurant itself is still nice.

1st time and for sure will repeat

The starters were excellent, but the rest of the meal was a letdown. We ordered the set menu with the "catch of the day" because we were told it would be monkfish. Instead, we were served sea bass with zero explanation or apology. When we finally tracked down a staff member to ask, we were simply told they had run out of monkfish. To make matters worse, the sea bass was burnt on the bottom (we had to scrap off the skin because it was too bitter to eat) and undercooked at the head end (still bloody).

The food is of excellent quality. However, it is a real shame that the 3-course dinner is not available gluten-free, because the dessert could not be exchanged for a gluten-free dessert from the regular menu.

We have been to the Cantine de Caron, and to another Caron restaurant, many times. This visit was very disappointing. The waiting staff were very distant, and didn't show any interest in their customers. They were not focused on whether the diners actually had a pleasant experience. Ordering was slow, and the delivery of food was even slower. One dish was unacceptably bad. Any cookery book or food programme or internet search will tell you that beef cheeks must be cooked slowly. These weren't and as a result the meat was not edible. We should have refused the dish but we had already waited so long that we didn't want to wait another half an hour for more food to arrive. So my partner just ate the vegetables. When the server cleared the plates, she asked how we liked the food. We explained that the meat was inedible; she said that's how beef cheeks are! Then, a few minutes later, the same server came with the bill. And again she asked how we liked the food! She had already forgotten our conversation, and had forgotten that she had removed a plate of food from our table which had not been eaten. She clearly had zero interest in her customers. This is not a cheap restaurant, and it is not easy for us to get to. It is a 'destination restaurant' in a beautiful space. But because the service and the cooking have gone downhill, we shall not return.

We had such a lovely experience! Our server, Nienke, was so attentive, friendly and kind. The food was also incredible! We ended up there for 4.5 hours just having a long and relaxing lunch accompanied by some great wines. I love how they did the design; it feels grand yet intimate. Everyone was so nice and the chef even came by our table. The tarte tatin was definitely one of the highlights and a great way to end the meal. We have no negative points; it was perfect! Looking forward to being back again soon!

Well. The risotto was too salty, the sea bass was barely undercooked on one side and just overcooked on the other. Admittedly, the service was friendly and the decor nice, but it is still too expensive for what you get.

For us, it was a real night out. We were served well and attentively. The food is fantastic!

I wanted to drink a coffee at the very cute and sunny terrace outside (around six tables), so I went in to order a coffee. I was told that service was not available on the terrace. I said no problem, I am happy to take the coffee myself. They still refused, explaining that they were understaffed. They clearly didn’t care or want to make a customer happy. I would have simply sat there for 30 minutes, enjoyed my coffee, and left. There were only two clients inside and the restaurant was literally empty, so it did not really seem understaffed to me. In the end, I had to leave. My advice for the future would be to remove the terrace if customers cannot use it on a sunny day.

I visited tonight on recommendation, and it didn't disappoint. The service was good, the staff knowledgeable and helpful. The food was delicious and well-prepared. The service speed could have been a bit slower, but I didn't find it particularly disruptive. The acoustics were excellent.

The prices are expensive and food quality was really bad! (But the Starter -beet roots salad- was good) We ordered stakes it was more fat than meat and you couldn’t even chew it for the price €86 !!! Comes with a simple salad and small fries which they forgot to give us, after asking for fries the waiters told the frying pan is off and took 5 minutes to just say sorry!!! Which I think in this case should started with “sorry”. Anyway not a good experience in general , not about food quality not about services and price. Not going back and not recommending.

We dined here on Valentine's Day, and everything was perfectly organized, despite the crowds. The tables were beautifully decorated with a small rose, which immediately created a romantic atmosphere. The food was delicious: I chose mainly fish dishes, and my boyfriend went for the beef cheek – everything was perfectly seasoned and prepared perfectly. The service was fast and incredibly friendly. Definitely recommended if you want to dine in a lovely, warm atmosphere! 🌹

Beautiful location and very tasty food. The portion are generous and it is packed with flavour. Price quality ratio is unbeatable in Amsterdam! Well done. Despite a lot of people the service was attentive and with some personal touch. My only comment will be that we were there for a date and it is a really noisy place so it was difficult to have a conversation at time. Thank you for evening !

Delicious French food. Generous portions. Lots of meat. Thin fries with tasty mayo. Good wines. Delicious limoncello. Friendly staff. Plenty of tables and chairs. Great space. Combined with a visit to the Lichtfabriek (Light Factory). Just a stone's throw away. Car within walking distance at the Q-Park.

We had a wonderful dinner. All the dishes were delicious, including the vegetarian options. The chicken was tender and the cheeses were also wonderful. We received excellent service. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We visited on a Sunday movie night, and after our dinner, a film was shown. That was also a very beautiful and special experience.

The location is beautiful and atmospheric, and the service is friendly, but clearly inexperienced. This is reflected in the timing and explanations. Unfortunately, the food was truly disappointing. Some dishes were too salty for us—that's a personal preference, of course—but apart from that, there were many technical issues: improper cooking (too dry/too long in the fryer/sloppy preparation) and flavors that were simply not balanced. That's not a matter of taste, but of execution. It speaks volumes that we didn't eat a single dish. For these prices, you expect craftsmanship and finesse, not mediocrity.

This place is truly special. Not for a quick bite, but perfect for those who enjoy life. I had a business lunch here, and I'll definitely go back again for a cozy and well-prepared dinner.

The food and drinks were incredibly delicious! What a wonderful experience this was! The staff still knows how things should be (just as I learned in hospitality school). The food was fantastic and, in my opinion, the best balance between "it has to look beautiful" and "it's your dinner, so it has to be filling." The menu is a set menu. We chose the tartare, followed by the duck. Both dishes were truly delicious and beautifully presented. And to finish, we enjoyed a cheese board with a glass of banyuls, which tastes similar to Port. An excellent suggestion from our waiter. The space was beautifully and tastefully decorated, a hall that I believe was once a church.

After a visit, you understand why some restaurants fail. We had lunch with four people and paid almost €180. No appetizer or dessert. No wine. The steaks were burnt, the mushroom dish was far below par (little, one-sided), and finally, €14 for some (self-poured) tap water: shameless.

The service was very poor. The staff were more occupied with the tablet at the entrance and each other than with serving guests. We had to ask for the menu ourselves; no one asked if we wanted anything else to drink, more water, or coffee. The menus and cutlery weren't clean. The price-quality ratio of this restaurant is poor. I would recommend going elsewhere; there are plenty of nicer and better places nearby.

The price-quality ratio is quite lacking. Positive points are the friendly staff and the beautiful location, unfortunately with poor acoustics. Points of concern: Red wine served ice cold (Beaujolais really doesn't need to be chilled) and very expensive (charging fifty bucks for a ten-euro bottle is ridiculous in my opinion). Some portions were truly meager. The squid appetizer was very bland, colorless, and more like an amuse-bouche in size. The main course, gnocchi with mushrooms, was more like a small entrée and had an uninteresting flavor combination. The same was true for the salsify appetizer. Furthermore, there was a strong emphasis on upselling through the offered supplements with almost every main course on the menu. All in all, a somewhat unpleasant aftertaste. In my opinion, the owner seems a bit too driven by his wallet. A missed opportunity at such a fantastic location.

We went with a group of friends, and it’s honestly a great spot for that kind of dinner—nice vibe, relaxed atmosphere, and perfect for catching up over good food. Everything we ordered was tasty and well done, no complaints there. They’re also very accommodating for large groups, which is a big plus when you’re planning a friends’ dinner. Definitely recommend the set menus too—the value for the price is solid and makes ordering super easy. The only thing we’d love to see is a bit more variety in those set menu options. Cool location, okay food, basic drinks selection

Had a pre-Christmas dinner here with colleagues. The food was excellent, the wines were lovely, the atmosphere was superb (beautiful industrial building, high ceilings), and the service was sharp and welcoming. What more could you ask for?

After visiting the museum, we wanted to eat something other than fries and deep-fried food in the Netherlands. :-) There are many options in the Westerpark area, but we liked the impressive architecture of the Cantine. At least the architecture wasn't a disappointment, although it was so cold that even my husband kept his coat on and warmed his hands by the tea light. When we arrived, seven tables were occupied, and the service consisted of two waiters. After an hour, a third, inexperienced waitress joined them. The drink menus arrived after 10 minutes, and the food menus after another 10 minutes. After 20 minutes, we finally received a bottle of tap water that tasted slightly of chlorine. This wasn't free, as you might expect on vacation; it cost €7.50. It would be nice to know the price beforehand; you're better off ordering different water. My rosé wine never arrived, and I had to ask for it to be removed from the bill. The small chicken and duck were okay; the sauce was the best part. We ordered fries as a side dish. The fries arrived lukewarm in a cold porcelain dish. On top of them was a cracked little tureen of mayonnaise – very unhygienic. Since street parking costs €7 an hour, we quickly asked for the bill. It was already quite uncomfortable because of the cold. I don't even want to imagine how bad the service must be when the place is full. The people at the next table waited just as long. They received their appetizers twice and twice pointed out that they wanted to eat the oysters first. The waitress then spent 20 minutes preparing them, which of course left little time for good service. I understand the kitchen's approach. But after that experience, we were glad we hadn't ordered the set menu. We're nice, relaxed customers, but if you're looking for a more upscale experience, the whole package should be right.
