BastiJan in Oude Stad

Last Friday evening, the 4 of us walked in without a reservation, there was exactly one table for 4 left, then we had a delicious meal and drinks. The service was really great, finished with a round of limocello on the job.

We had a wonderful evening at restaurant BastiJan. We chose the 4-course surprise menu and could have had a wine arrangement with it, but decided to opt for some individual wines. Excellent advice was given regarding the matching wines. The dish that stood out for us was the veal sucade. This meat was so tender that you actually didn't need a knife. The flavours were fantastic and the portions were also very good in size. It was a relaxed evening that we really enjoyed. Things that I think could be improved, is perhaps to include one of BastiJan's famous dishes (such as the fried shrimp or Chateaubriand) in the surprise menu. This was praised at first, but we still think it's a bit of a shame that we didn't experience this in the surprise menu. Furthermore, it sometimes took quite a while before we got the dishes. We didn't mind that much, but sometimes we didn't feel completely seen. All in all, a great restaurant that I can recommend to everyone. Maybe it was just a snapshot of the points of criticism, but the dishes are delicious.

First time I've eaten here, but what a gem this is in Haarlem. Despite the high competition, this business is truly distinctive in price and certainly in quantity I highly recommend this if you like good food

Deux petites pièces, atmosphère intime. Décoration de bon goût. Carte simple : cinq entrées, quatre poissons, quatre viandes. Petite sélection de vins. Très bonne qualité : fraîcheur des crevettes et poisson. Service discret, attentif.

Ambiente liberty, romantico, luci soffuse. Personale cortese e professionale, menù ristretto ma raffinato. Scelto branzino grigliato con verdure, ottimo. Nell'attesa   burro e olive. Vini al calice, la preferenza è per uno chardonnay. Ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo.

We loved the food and the personal attention at this small, quaint restaurant. Definitely need a reservation ahead of time.

Little gem. We literally fell on this little gem on Sunday evening. We knew nothing of it and what a delight. There was only one wait tess and she was soooooooo good. She had no need to write down your order - it was only her fantastic memory - take not English restaurants! She was fully verse in ingredienti and was so apologetic when there was no Guinea fowl. In a dutch speaking restaurant they did there up most to delight us. An absolutely gem of a place with truly kind staff - a rarity in England these days. Decent delicious portions and the trifle was a knockout. A super talented chef who deserve s to succeed. Thank you for a memora le meal in Haarlem

My original plan was to visit Haarlem from monday to thursday, but that implied, that I could not have dinner at BastiJan. So I decided to arrive on sunday and visite this restaurant. What a great decision that was!! Right from entering I was greated by (what turned out to be) an amazing waitresses. Now, the food: I chose the 4 course surprise menu, and this turned out to be an excellent choise. In additicon, I left te wine pairing for each dish to the waitress and the chef, and they hit the spot every course. Conclusion: when visiting Haarlem, restaurant BastiJan is the place to go!!

Had a wonderful evening with 3 friends. The table was not yet ready for the 2nd round, but they acted quickly and worked hard. Very professional service. Chose the 4-course surprise menu 4 times. Definitely not disappointed. Nice variety of vegetarian, fish and meat. The Haddock with sauerkraut and wasabi nuts was a really great new discovery for me. Nice matching wines served. After a nice cheese board with a tasty tawny port. We haven't seen friends for a long time, so it was a lot of fun at our table. Once again very professional service, thank you for the beautiful, delicious evening!

Dinner with colleagues. The food was absolutely delicious, although it took a bit more time to reach the table than we would have preferred. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Gemoedelijk en gezellig en niet te druk. Vriendelijke bediening en aandacht. Heerlijk gegeten op kerstavond, gewoon lekker van de kaart. Gerechten waren echt smaakvol. Prijzen gemiddeld en in goede verhouding.

Many years ago I was charmed by BastiJan and that is still the case. Delicious food, great service and a cozy and cozy place. Please keep in mind that we work in shifts on Fridays and Saturdays. (times are on their site)

Had a delicious meal yesterday. I was in the area and actually looking for another restaurant but then came across BastiJan. Cozy, not too large restaurant with personal service. I was told that Jan has been in the kitchen for almost 40 years and the shrimp starter was recommended to me. Well, that's not a standard shrimp cocktail, I can tell you. Delicious!! I will definitely come back with my husband for the chateau Briand that my neighbors had.

As the title of my review says, beautiful cozy little spot in the center of Haarlem. We are always looking for small places like this when travelling instead of usual over crowded tourist traps. Atmosphere is very friendly, staff was great! They recommended us the food and they shared a bit about rsestauran history. Food was amazing! We had the chateubriand for two and it was absolutely delicious! Keep up the good work! Will definitely come back when visiting Haarlem again!

We went out to a restaurant today, the whole family. The service was excellent but the dishes were disappointing. starters were ok, not bad, the prawns were nice, really not special, And more relative to the fact that it is their specialty. The main dishes: the vegetarian dish was simply vegetables, nothing special, no protein; Soy or tofu, the steak was impossible to cut, it was rubbery not chewy and not tasty, the (strange) chicken was clearly undercooked. The fish was nice. I want to point out that they gave us extra bread and butter without a problem according to our requests. The waitress was sweet and served well. But a bill of 150 euros, there is no doubt that this meal is not worth 150 euros. (PS The bathrooms are very clean and pleasant).

Gezellig restaurant met niet al te veel stoelen wat het een knusse indruk geeft. De eigenaar staat al decenia met enthousiasme in dit restaurant te koken. Wij waren met 10 personen en hadden het 4 gangen verrassings menu met bijpassend wijn arrangement. Het eea werd door zeer gedreven en vriendelijke medewerksters aan ons uitgeserveerd. De gerechten en de wijnen waren van prima kwaliteit de begeleidende uitleg was deskundig en dat zie je tegenwoordig niet veel meer. Kortom heerlijk gegeten en gedronken. De uiteindeindelijke rekening was ook, naar huidige begrippen, heel schappelijk.

Met een groep van 10 personen hebben we hier genoten van het 4 gangen verrassingsmenu met bijpassend wijnarrangement. Het restaurant is nier erg groot, dus met onze groep was het restaurant al bijna half vol. We werden vriendelijk welkom geheten en al snel stonden er olijfjes en brood met smeersels op tafel. De gerechtjes waren zeer smakelijk en werden geserveerd op een gevarieerd servies ( uit de kringloopwinkel?) door zeer vriendelijke dames, die een goede uitleg gaven over de gerechten en de wijnen. De goede waarderingen op TripAdvisor werden volledig waargemaakt.

Nice place and good service. Luckily we sat outside, it was very warm inside. Main dishes were okay, not great , dessert the panna cotta was disappointing. We expected more given the good reviews

Usually, eating for humans can be compared to filling gas for a car. It just has to be…! But at BastiJan, food is really special. The flavors, the picture, the service and also the price made the food into dining. Hats off and 5 stars for me.

Splendid Spot in the hart of Haarlem. Excellent service from the staff, the menu is superb. By the way , the wine selection is fantastic. I recommend the Chateaubriand. ( 2 persons only)

Lovely setting, a small intimate restaurant in a characterful street just off the main square. The owner was very friendly. The food is well presented and good value but I wouldn’t say it’s the best

Highly recommended for lunch or dinner in Haarlem. Amazing food and very attentive professional service in this small intimate bistro in the heart of Haarlem. Intimate art deco atmosphere. Incredibly, the establishment has a staff of two in the kitchen and one working the front of house.

Wederom weer een fantastische ervaring, samen met vrienden genoten van de kook “kunsten” maar zeker ook van de gastvrouwen. Deze kundige gastvrouwen doen er werkelijk alles aan om de ervaring zo fijn mogelijk te maken met kundige (wijn) adviezen en hun stralende aanwezigheid. Het eten is werkelijk fantastisch te noemen, wij hebben genoten van het 4 gangen verrassingsmenu en iedere gang een dikke 10. Gaan zeker weer en nogmaals bedankt voor een heerlijke avond!

Our favorite restaurant in Haarlem! The service is excellent, with a smile and a lot of personal attention, they give good advice about the food and the wine list. The food is delicious, with good value for money. We have been here many times and will definitely continue to do so.

Just got home from our dinner at Bastijan, very satisfied with the service and atmosphere, but especially with the food. Only here do I dare to choose the surprise menu, because I am sure it is good. If you can even make sprouts taste LIKE THIS...unbelievable 👍👍👍

Bij binnenkomst gelijk een warm en welkom gevoel. Wij hebben gekozen voor het verrassing menu. Dit is een goede keuze geweest. Erg lekker gegeten voor een mooie prijs. De wijn adviezen vielen helemaal op zijn plek. Top bediening wat een huiselijke sfeer geeft.

Lovely restaurant near the main square of Haarlem. My wife and I had the chateau Briand (the appetizer selection on offer was less “attractive” to us) . The meat was delicious and super tender. Had dessert too, forgot the name. It had rum raisins in it. Nice. Very friendly service. Ps. We did sit outside near a drainage pit, once and a while we could smell this.

Recommend the 4 courses option. Every dish seemed a bit experimental and all were perfect.

Waren de overheerlijke olijven vergeten en wat een verrassing liggen ze gewoon de volgende ochtend op onze boot, dat is nog eens SERVICE! Amazing food, amazing staff, amazing location and really reasonably priced! I had the four course surprise menu with the cheese and it was by far the best food I had while in the Netherlands. I was dining solo and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. Can't recommend highly enough.

Wij eten regelmatig bij BastiJan en zijn nog nooit teleurgesteld. Jan is een zeer gastvrije, innovatieve en creatieve chef/eigenaar en ook de mensen in de bediening doen het zo goed. Heerlijk eten in een relaxte en gezellige sfeer. Een dikke aanrader! Ook het Kerstdiner vandaag was top. Een heerlijk 5-gangen diner met 3 soorten amuses en dessert. Heerlijke gerechten met combinaties waar ik zelf nooit op zou komen.

Großartiges Essen mit einen top Service. Wir waren spontan hier und noch eben einen Tisch draußen ergattern können. Wir haben uns für das Menu entschieden. Es war der perfekte Abschluss für unseren Urlaub.

Sehr guter und sehr freundlicher Service, Chateaubriand auf den Punkt und leckere Spicy prawns in exzellenter Sauce. Preise völlig angemessen und im Vergleich - sowohl bei Speisen als auch Getränken - wirklich moderat. Absolut empfehlenswert! Fabulous experience in central Haarlem. Delicious 4 course surprise menu, served with great service and smiles. Felt very at home eating here, which is nice when one travels by oneself. All dishes top-notch and lovely wines, but the haddock was something sublime. I'll be back!

Wir waren am Vorabend des Königstages im BastiJan essen. Das Restaurant ist relativ klein, was aber kein Nachteil sein muss. Das Essen war lecker, der Service sehr gut (drauf). Alles in allem auf jeden Fall eine Empfehlung.

We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident and wow were we surprised. The staff offered us a table upon turning up despite being pretty full (we were lucky as others without a reservation did not find a table after us). Super good food, great portions and to top it all off - excellent service. Absolutely recommend visiting, we were so glad to have found BastiJan after a long day of exploring.

Helemaal goed. Erg leuke bediening met veel kennis van eten en wijn. En zalig eten. Op drukke dagen reserveren op twee vaste tijden vonden wij ook prettig. Geen gedrang geen drukte. Top.

Top avond gehad door de geweldige service en de verrukkelijke gerechten. Een wat kleiner restaurant waardoor het een stuk gemoedelijker wordt. Waren onze olijven voor thuis nog vergeten, maar konden met de eigenaar een oplossing hiervoor vinden. Al met al alleen maar lof over deze plek!
