Great, right? We had made a reservation here, but upon arrival, it turned out the Toko wasn't open because they were on “vacation”! Just a note on the door!

Truly a top-notch experience! We were given a very warm welcome upon arrival. We started with an hour of darts, where you could choose from many fun games. After the darts, our snacks were served. Huge compliments to the staff, super friendly and fast!

Only watched football at 3 am. Good service (regarding the beer ;-)) unfortunately the match didn't end well. I would love to eat here sometime, because it looks atmospheric and has a good menu.

Had a good meal and a nice atmosphere. Darts was also fun.

A really beautiful place, but nothing like it looks on their Instagram. “With beautiful unique products that you won’t find everywhere”—none of that is true. Very simple menu, nothing special—you can eat that anywhere these days—presentation and taste weren't special either. €6.50 for a cola. They came by once with oysters, and sushi that sat outside the fridge all evening and wasn't replenished. A real shame, because on Instagram the owners' presentation looks very nice. Hopefully it gets better, because it was a Saturday night and not even half the restaurant was filled. What a waste!

We had a delicious meal and drinks. It is a very nice concept that you can combine shared dining with surprising small dishes brought to your table. You can order from the menu or the dishes they bring around every so often on a trolley. The service is also top-notch! Definitely worth a repeat visit.

I made reservations over a month in advance on this restaurant because it was highly recommended on multiple websites. I reviewed the menu online and was very excited to eat here. However when the date arrived for me to dine, I was informed by the host that the cuisine has changed and they no longer serve Indonesian food. They had a sushi cart with very overpriced items and I was not set on having sushi (I’d eaten it the night before). Anyway, I won’t be back and I was sorely disappointed. I left without eating.

One minor downside: I find ordering with a QR code quite annoying, having to pull up that screen every time. Otherwise, great.

Very nice place opened about 6 months ago. We had a lovely dinner with friends. Lived in Hong Kong for some time so love Asian food and sharing dishes. The food is nice and quite varied. There are extra options outside the menu which they bring to your table. Nice to see the price as well. The only downside was that it's quite noisy so hard to have a conversation with the whole table.

The team at Labo Chao have picked a few pan asian dishes and do them fantastically. Lovely, fresh ingredients and quality flavours. Ambience was perfect for our evening meal

An incredibly cozy and nice restaurant. We had a really great meal.

It was a nice concept to be able to choose partly from the carts that come by and order from the menu. We found the execution less than ideal. It sometimes took a long time before new dishes came around. The staff were very busy with that. There was no one behind the bar for new drinks. We found the drinks very pricey. 6.50 for a soft drink is really too pricey for us. We won't be going back a second time.

Great location, beautiful decor, very friendly service, everything we were served was delicious, shared dining and unlimited choice, this is THE recommendation in Haarlem.

I was there 2 months ago. The experience was slightly less impressive back then. I let them know by phone. I went again yesterday. Had a super experience. They've tweaked the concept; you can choose dishes yourself, but the wait staff also walks through the restaurant with a trolley containing other tasty dishes. Oysters are also opened at the table, etc. Keep up the good work.

A really lovely place! Beautiful establishment, super good service that takes care of you all evening, and a fun, creative food concept in the form of both a set menu and carts rolling around with small dishes you can choose from. The food was incredibly delicious and the wines were top-notch too. Definitely worth a repeat visit!!

The staff were extremely welcoming and very well-knowledgeable. Everything was immaculate. From the entrance until the end. One point of improvement could be that we were not informed about the prices of all food which was offered from the trolley pass around, which eventually resulted in € 100 bill which we didn’t expect. So we felt a bit scammed on the prices. In addition, when it came to the dessert, we asked to share 1 dessert with my friend, however eventually that dessert was split into 2 plates and we were charged for 2, so overall the sneaky way of being charged for things without informing the customers was not really the best approach, however everything else was great. Thank you!

We immediately felt welcome! The concept with the appetizers passing by and being prepared right in front of you is great. This way, there is always contact with the staff! The items on the menu were also very tasty. We will be back!

We had a delicious meal and the service was fantastic. However, ordering via the QR code didn't work properly. Dishes disappeared from the list, severely limiting the selection. Fortunately, everything could also simply be ordered directly from the super-friendly waiter. A unique concept, with the trolleys going around the tables!

Labo Chao looks nice with a good and cozy atmosphere. The decor and light music make it a pleasant place to go out for dinner if you are looking for a Since photos of the old menu are still on Google Maps, you have to go to the website for the correct menu. The new menu does not consist of rijsttafels or anything similar, but has a different system where you can choose an all-you-can-eat experience or individual dishes to share, paying per dish. (We chose the second option). You order the classic dishes via a QR code, allowing you to keep ordering without waiting. In addition to the classic menu, there are also dishes you can choose from. These cost 6-8 euros per plate. As far as we could choose and saw, these dishes consisted of sushi, spareribs, and desserts. You cannot order these dishes via the QR code, so you need a bit of luck for them to come around frequently if there is something tasty on the menu. The food was therefore a little disappointing to us, due to the limited choice on the classic menu. The concept is fun and the service was great, with friendly staff. I enjoyed it, and who knows, I might come back soon to do the full experience.

We were at the St Tropez brunch. A wonderful afternoon with live music, dancers, and a DJ in a beautiful ambiance. One big party. Delicious dishes. Fantastic atmosphere. Good service; in short, a fantastic experience.

We had a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to the super nice and helpful staff and the delicious food. The space is also beautifully decorated with comfortable chairs. A real treat and highly recommended!

We had a delicious meal and drinks. However, considering that you are allowed to choose 2 dishes per round, per person, and for a total of 5 rounds... we felt there were few dishes to choose from (from memory, 6 classics and 2 specials). We were quite full after 2 rounds, but for those with a bigger appetite, this might be something to consider.

Surprising in terms of food. In addition to the 4-course dinner, special appetizers were offered. Think salmon, tuna prepared in the Japanese style, oysters, and mini tacos with shrimp salad. That was part of the dinner. Very friendly service. We arrived with a dinner voucher from the previous owner, and Bas simply let us enjoy the dinner and took the voucher. Super accommodating. Thank you, Bas!

This was a very interesting experience. We visited for rijsttafel based on Google reviews, but they apparently do not do this anymore and instead to a tasting menu where you choose your dishes. I had the impression they were still developing the process for the tasting, as it was 5 “batch” orders (with a party of 3, group ordering) where you could select 5-6 dishes each order, for a total of around 30 plates. My difficulty was that many of the dishes were quite large, meat/fish-based, and there were only a dozen or so to choose from? We got full on batch 3 of 5 and it felt odd to reorder the same thing multiple times, which you’d have to given the selection. The food itself is worth talking about. The fish dishes were 10/10 excellent, Korean fried chicken was great. The lemongrass rice was 1/10 bad (lemongrass was overpowering and was an odd single-note flavor reminiscent of floor cleaner - not what I’m used to for lemongrass). The rice was one of the only carbohydrate options in the tasting menu. There was one noodle dish, but it had hardly any noodles - they were mixed with cucumbers and there was a large amount of chicken on them (again, the chicken was good, but this is the first time I’ve argued for less meat on a noodle dish). It felt unbalanced in that way, lots of meat, but if I’m given an option of essentially all you can eat perfectly cooked fish dishes, who am I to complain? I’d give 5 stars on the food anyway, except you really cannot have bad rice at an Asian restaurant - if you get one thing right, it should be the rice. I’ll also comment on the music as part of the ambiance. This is a “fancy” venue, but the music was mostly American oldies - not necessarily a bad thing, but it felt like a mismatch. At one point it progressed to 80s and was playing Cyndi Lauper “Time after time” and I burst out laughing, probably embarrassing myself, but I just… I associate the song with 90s roller skating rinks, and it was quite high volume. So, long story short I came here for traditional-ish Indonesian, and while most of it was very good food, it felt more of a modern pan-Asian tasting menu. I would go back and order 30 plates of just the fish dishes anyhow, because they were that good, but I expect they will rebalance it soon. 😅

The food was very expensive and not tasty. The dim sum was way too sticky. If you are eating à la carte, don't go here. Miso aubergine for €15. It is just a glorified all-you-can-eat restaurant.

Visited for the first time on March 19th. What a fun concept this is and the food is great. The extra small dishes presented on a trolley are also very nice. The table is simply too small for everything you get. Great service, friendly and helpful. First time, but certainly not the last.

Delicious food with great service and good suggestions and it all arrived quickly . Loved the concept of the little dishes, so you got to taste a number of different things. Even though the food is ordered via phone and QR codes, the waiter was very friendly and attentive which made the whole experience.

We had a delicious meal and the value for money was good. The ambiance inside is nice. It is just a shame that they don't explain the concept to new customers as standard. A lot was unclear. Only after asking was something briefly explained. Also, no attention was paid to my dietary requirements. Dietary information was listed with most dishes, though.

What a wonderful discovery! We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and the personal attention. The appetizers were all delicious and fresh. The excellent service made the evening complete. Thank you for your hospitality!

Good service, delicious dishes.

The staff is incredibly sweet and kind. We were often asked if we wanted anything else to drink. We felt truly welcome and at ease. The ambiance was truly beautiful. The QR code concept for a 5-course experience (what's wrong with a regular paper menu?) forced us to constantly reach for our phones, which is not something you want in company. The dishes were utterly flavorless or embellished with sauces or dried onions. The batter was heavy, masking the fishy flavor. There was also a greasy, fried taste. Such a shame, because even dim sum or fried crispy prawns from a freezer at a random supermarket or Asian grocery store around the corner are much better. Even the spring rolls were overly crispy with a few strings of flavorless dough. In short, a real shame for such a wonderful restaurant, or perhaps just our discerning taste?

I think they need to revaluate their pricing. There is a tiered pricing menu with a complicated ordering procedure. The food was OK but overpriced. A spring roll that’s been cut into 4 pieces costs €10. The cucumber salad was pretty good but it was literally a quarter of a cucumber in mandolin slices flat on a plate. The slices were so thin we couldn’t stab with a fork. We ordered 4 small plates and drinks at it cost €71.

Super relaxed place. Very good food, great service. We had a high, narrow table by the window. Very cozy, two courses of your choice followed by dessert. Nice music, a bit of a lounge vibe.

An interesting restaurant with a unique concept. At first, it wasn’t entirely clear why the à la carte option has a time limit and allows no more than two dishes per person. We also couldn’t place an order for four dishes at once from either one or two phones. After speaking with the waitress, the owner came to our table and explained the concept of slow eating — a mindful approach to consumption and the opportunity to truly experience each dish. After the explanation, the format became clear and actually very appealing. The food is tasty, well-balanced, and respects Asian culinary traditions. The dishes include greens and vegetables, which nicely complement the flavors. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is attentive and friendly. If the app is slightly improved from a UX perspective (for example, adding a side dish selection at the final checkout stage), the overall experience would be even more comfortable. Overall, we were left with a very impression.

The food was truly delicious, especially the Tokyo Flame—highly recommended. We understand they're working on a new "all-inclusive" concept, but unfortunately, the explanation was very unclear. The scanned menu listed prices for some dishes and not for others, which caused a lot of confusion. When we asked the staff about the all-inclusive and any additional charges, the waitress herself wasn't sure and had to consult several colleagues. Furthermore, the ordering system via the app wasn't working properly. We had to ask several times for some orders because they simply weren't brought (especially drinks). The food itself, however, always arrived correctly. We ordered coffee and received a cold latte macchiato. The service in general was unfortunately subpar: incorrect orders, items being sent to other tables, and even items being dropped. When we paid, we calmly gave feedback about the confusion, but this was not received well. We were spoken to in a nasty tone and the service wasn't very customer-friendly. It's a shame, because the kitchen is really good, but due to the poor service and confusion about the concept, we will not be returning here again.

-Service very slow (first drinks after 20 minutes) -Taste of food was mediocre -You can only order 2 small dishes per person per round and then have to wait 20 minutes for a next round -They forgot the food for our kids in round one, it only came at the end of round 2.. not good -portions are small -first time ever we left a restaurant ‘hungry’ and went eating fast food afterwards 🤨 -the bill (2 adults, 2 kids under 10) was a staggering €201.. Advice to slip this one..

Labo Chao at the central of Haarlem. Opened recently. The owners did an amazing job with the design, created a cozy atmoshpere! Loved the shame of colous and the xmas decorated huge entrance door. I visited them for dinner with a friend. Food was absolutely vary in flavours, small plates, providing the opportunity to taste more from the menu. However staff was extremly young, out of experience. Did so many small mistakes what should not do. For ex. during the time I was waiting for my partner waitress wanted to explain me the menu in solo. Why? I had to emphasise no : just when my partner there. Later they did not recognize empty glasses. we had to give strong signal to order again. Finally I gave 4/5 because of uncomfortable layout of our table - chairs. We got a place at the end of the bar, where waitresses entered to the shopfloor. Every time they hit the back of my chair. I had one strong hit, and even the manager compensated the uncomformity with a free wine : we felt very unpleasant. Also we had a tree next to our table. And since my friend is tall, the tree was more or less touching her head, she had to really squeeze the space how to sit down, avoiding to stuck her hair on the tree. & really small distance between the tables, chairs… Overall good restaurant - but not 5/5.

Ron Blauw's Bistrobar Indonesia is now called Labo Chao. Before that, it was the Gin Sum club. It's certainly not the location or decor that's to blame. It's spacious, there's a DJ spinning in the corner, and the lighting is dim. The classic imagery is completely out of place, but the overall atmosphere is very atmospheric. It's a shared dining experience, meaning small bites, so before you know it, you've spent €40 per person. The food is delicious: Asian cuisine with surprising flavors. I found the service to be variable. Sometimes very attentive, other times absent. Drinks are served while our order is being taken. On the first Saturday of the new year, it was very quiet, but there were still plenty of staff around. The DJ was a bit out of place because of that.

The positive reviews for this restaurant are for the Indonesian restaurant that used to exist at this address. I hope Google addresses this. Labo Chen is HORRIBLE. They refuse to serve you (tap) water and the food is inedible. The server repeatedly forgot my order as I was giving it to her. 0/5 stars

I found the menu just right, not too much choice and top-notch dishes on the menu. There were five of us and there was something tasty for everyone. The atmosphere is fantastic; we were welcomed and served in a super friendly manner. We had a great evening. I go here for business as well, because the wine and ambiance are spot on too. Dear, I am taking the trouble to send you an email after a very unsatisfactory evening yesterday. Please see reservation below. What went wrong? Just about everything. Upon arrival, it took about 10 minutes before we reached the front desk and could register our reservation. In the meantime, staff were also busy with card terminals, and the line of waiting guests didn't seem to be a priority. I asked for a quiet table (due to my son's birthday) and was told that we had a spacious table. A row of 3 small tables where you don't really sit comfortably with 5 people, and in a busy spot in the restaurant. We ordered drinks and wine; the bottle of sparkling water was already on the table and was supposed to be cold enough (it was lukewarm). While quietly opening it ourselves, half the bottle sprayed all over the table, and only after we went to get waitstaff from the restaurant ourselves were we able to dry the table and our clothes a bit. We ordered 3 starters. After half an hour, we went to ask how long it would take, and we were told that there was a staff shortage in the kitchen but that it would surely arrive soon. So we went ahead and ordered the rijsttafel for 5 people. After another fifteen minutes, we asked for the starter again. It was supposed to be there in 2 minutes. It arrived 10 minutes later, as did the drinks, and the new bottle of sparkling water that the staff brought and opened at the table sprayed all over the table again. After the starter, we waited 20 minutes for the rijsttafel. 2 small dishes (satay, among others) were simply cold and we sent them back (and they were brought warm 10 minutes later), and 1 dish was missing and was placed on the table after 7 minutes. No attention from the wait staff, a lot of stress in the restaurant. No attention to the fact that there was a birthday person at the table (a small gesture or something similar). We paid 288 euros and yes, definitely didn't leave a tip for the first time in my life. We went somewhere else to eat a festive dessert. This is particularly bad; even though we indicated in the restaurant that this was unpleasant... the staff responded haughtily or awkwardly. Finally, I took the trouble to report this to the restaurant by email. No response!

Tasty food, but a rijsttafel starts at 17.50 on the website and ending up paying 37.50 ……

Thank you for your hospitality and for working hard to accommodate us guests who hadn't booked. Despite telling us that everything was going wrong in the kitchen that evening, causing the wait to be longer, we didn't hear anything about it. It's impressive that your wait staff had everything under control and answered and explained everything with a smile. They even set a world record for explaining dishes. Respect! Delicious rijsttafel. A warm welcome. Nice atmosphere, but unfortunately very noisy. It's hard to hear each other, and I find it a bit too dark in the restaurant. Tip: a visit to the restroom is worth it ;-)

Went there on July 4th. The food was truly disappointing. Who makes this? The store around the corner is 10x better. The price/quality ratio is incredibly skewed. Such a shame.

The place is fancy and the food was very good, but the size of the portions were quite small and we had to wait almost one hour for the food to arrive.

My first rice table ever and it did not disappoint. We had the small rice table, as I had to save some space for the incredible dessert :) The food was presented in all this cute little bowls and every single dish had an unique taste and texture. I loved creating my own little food combinations from all the different dishes. I think the tofu and tempeh dish, was the best tofu I ever had. The preparation was perfect, leaving the tofu with a super soft texture and the amazing flavours from the sauce that melted into it. On top of that the restaurant is incredibly well decorated, with soft ambient lightning and a modern look to it.

Friendly service, the rice table was adjusted to your personal preference. I found the food tasty, but not shocking. We came from far and would not specifically drive here again. A nice place to eat something before going to the cinema, because it is nearby.

Beautiful place definitely worth it

We had the 3 course meal and it was amazing! I especially loved the first appetizer (first picture). I found the beef a little tough but I’ve noticed most of the beef I’ve had is that way, so I won’t take a star off. The flavours are intense but harmonize on your pallet, changing as you masticate. The menu is creative and innovative. If you’re ever in Haarlem, I wouldn’t miss this.

Yesterday evening we had dinner here after a day in Haarlem. Atmospheric restaurant with a beautiful open kitchen. Because we had eaten late in the afternoon, we opted for various street food snacks, a few starters and a sateh ayam with fried rice. It was all very tasty and beautifully served. Sometimes also surprising in terms of combinations. What we really like is that you can also make a reservation here late and are not looked out when the kitchen is already closed. Great. We will definitely come back here.

Opted for the rice table, both the normal and the vegetarian were on our table. We have a few big eaters, but everyone had enough.

The food was delicious and wait staff attentive. The rijstaffel was perfect for 2. The ambience chill. It was popular but the acoustics were good. Pricing reasonable.

Vaker gegeten. Vooral de voorgerechten om te delen en rijsttafel vallen bij ons in de smaak. Bediening kan efficiënter maar je zit in een leuke omgeving, de drankjes smaken goed en het eten is top dus daar valt mee te leven. Goede plek om terug te komen!

We wanted to experience Indonesian food while in The Netherlands. We chose Bistro Bar Indonesia. We ended up being there on King's Day. The place was empty when we arrived (early at 5:30 pm), but we were greeted warmly and the waitress spoke English and was very helpful. We had the large Rijsttafel. It was wonderfully diverse and tasty. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

Ate for the 3rd time and what great service. Eating (rice table) remains a taste sensation with a nice mix of fish and meat or vegetarian.

Two of us ate at the bistro bar Indonesia for the first time this evening. We booked online and paid a deposit of €30, which was later deducted from the final bill. I think that's reasonable, as many people probably book without showing up in person. The food was freshly prepared and of good quality. We ordered the tuna tartare twice, where, in our opinion, the tuna flavor was completely overpowered by the mayonnaise-like sauce. The dish also tasted strongly of soy sauce. My companion had beef, which was very good, and three types of rice. I liked the one with coconut the best. My fried pointed cabbage was on point, and the sauce was tasty. The spice was somewhat unevenly distributed across the cabbage. The side vegetables tasted mainly of soy sauce and dried onions. The service was friendly and professional. However, the service seemed a bit disorganized, and there was no clear assignment of waitresses. We waited an hour for the main course. I personally found the price a bit high.

Don't eat here if you are a vegetarian. All vegetarian dishes were completely tasteless. The tofu was even fried completely unmarinated... very special. A number of starters were taken off the receipt, which is nice, but the main course really made no sense. A few leaves of lettuce, that unmarinated tofu, what looked like uncooked noodles and a dash of red sauce. After three bites we left. Too bad, this food has not yet been next to Indonesian food, so I honestly don't understand why you call it that.

We went to Bistro Indonesia for dinner one evening. Upon arrival we had been given a spot near the fire hose and fuse cabinet, not very atmospheric to sit next to a fire hose. Our street food snacks arrived on the table and they were finally very disappointing. We had ordered vegetarian envelopes with absolutely no taste, but then really no taste at all. I myself had ordered chicken legs of which the legs consisted more of a kind of hard gummy pieces but were also very dry. After this was reported to the staff, this was removed from the bill. The main course arrived and actually exactly the same as the street food snacks, it was disappointing. In particular the vegetarian dish was again very tasteless and you actually did not know what you had on your plate, the tofu was tasteless and tasted like nothing. I had ordered a variation on rendang which was tasty in itself, the meat was good but the taste of rendang was nowhere to be found. All in all, the price and quality are not in balance. You get dishes that are not generous but the price is quite generous. The service was otherwise just fine. We would not quickly walk in here again if we are in Haarlem again..

Food was Ok, but if you come as couple you get a high stool only option, no matter if you are pregnant (as I am) and there are plenty of lower seating options, I asked if it was possible as it is so uncomfortable to be in a stool at 8months preggo, they said No. The first waitress (brunette) was quite rude with me, asking me to hide my bottle of water, I understand it might look ‘bad’ at a restaurant, but then offer some tab water as other places do. Food ain’t cheap, improve your service and try to be more kind to customers. The other 2 waiters: young blonde girl and guy, were actually much more nicer.

Heerlijke gerechten, smaakvol. Jammer dat het eten niet warm was. Verder heel rumoerig en de muziek een enorme stoorzender. Wij konden elkaar nauwelijks verstaan.

Some things were really delicious I enjoyed the taco. But my god, so many slices of pepper are put on everything, I was just some fried rice and there was such a huge mountain of pepper on it and on the satay and the other dishes there was also a huge mountain, it's a shame you couldn't taste the herbs properly. I hope it will be tastier next time with less pepper on it.

Bistrobar Indonesia staat goed aangeschreven, dus we hadden ons verheugd op een uitgebreide vegetarische rijsttafel. Helaas wist die ons niet te verrassen. De gerechtjes waren eenvoudig, de smaken vlak en de pittigheid sterk vernederlandst. De rijst was droog en de gerechten werden lauw geserveerd, wat de beleving niet ten goede kwam. Voor bijna €40 per persoon voelde de rijsttafel als een verzameling losse, weinig bijzondere gerechtjes. Een pluspunt was de bediening: een enthousiast en vriendelijk jong team dat de sfeer absoluut ten goede kwam. Helaas kon dit het eten niet compenseren. Gezien de reputatie van het restaurant en de prijs hadden we meer verwacht van de vegetarische rijsttafel, zowel qua smaak als presentatie. Voor liefhebbers van authentiek en goed gekruid Indisch of Indonesisch eten is dit restaurant wellicht niet de beste keuze.

Sfeer was heel fijn en de ontvangst was prettig. Eten was zeer smaakvol en verrassende smaken. Personeel was aardig en professioneel. Bedankt!

Wat een culinair genot was ons verrassingsmenu. De entourage was prachtig en gezellig en het personeel heel vriendelijk en professioneel. We voelden ons écht gezien en hebben in alle opzichten een heerlijke avond gehad! Dank!
