After 5, I was told a cappuccino would take 15 minutes. After canceling, I received a rude response from the owner. I found a quick and tasty coffee further on.

Delicious coffee with a glass of water, good oat milk, and a very tasty cinnamon roll. Friendly service. The only downside is the crowds and the tight seating inside. Great place.

BorgmanenBorgman never disappoints. Sunday lunch today great lunch soft tasty scrambled eggs in a bowl toasted sourdough on the side, no soggy bread. Ems had the eggplant, a beautiful slice of flavours and texture. Well done Tom on the food and the team on the coffee and make us feel always “at home” The Lekkies

We had breakfast here, the breakfast itself was alright but the coffee was really really good! Silky smooth, very tasteful and beautiful made! We loved the coffee so much that we went back one our later to have one more. Definitely a place to go more often.

Beautiful family owned cafe. The coffee is great, very intense and sweet taste and they roast it in the same family business! We tried their cheesecake which wasn’t in the menu and it was incredibly good! Will make this one of my go to spots in town 🩷

I fell in love with the minimalist interior design. I ordered a green tea here being slightly worried as u huge tea fanatic in a coffee roasters place. However, I received a very well brewed cup which was very balanced. I would definitely revisit. I see in the other reviews that people are not fond of the owner’s attitude, but I have no remarks at all. I enjoyed my time in the cafe on a sunny day watching how the customer’s dogs get treats from the staff.

Coffee is great but it’s not worth it when you feel so unwelcomed by the owner. First I thought it’s me and I’m doing something wrong, but reading the reviews realize I don’t. I understand it’s difficult to get to the therapist in the Netherlands but come on, you make your customers feel insulted by your behaviour! Please wake up, it’s 21st century and you are not in Paris!!! I understand that the place is still busy and you don’t care to lose customers but just think how you make people feel!

The owner is rather grumpy and nervous for nearly everything. With the stroller inside, he got super nervous. We changed the diaper in the bathroom. The rest of the staff was super friendly while he got really angry at us because we were 4 minutes busy with the bathroom.

The latte was great! The cinnamon rolls are delicious but I think they are a bit pricey.

Quality of the coffee is always good! Despite the good coffee, I don't have to come back here again. The atmosphere among the staff is unprofessional: loud talking, complaining about work tasks, grumpy staff and in addition the owner is very disrespectful!

No discussion about the quality of their coffees or cakes, it’s nice. However, I do not appreciate the owner’s behaviour, he’s a very grumpy and rude person. In terms of customer loyalty there’s a long way to go. I used to visit this place regularly but after the owner’s idiotic behaviour I’m boycotting this place. Have some respect for your visitors and don’t be rude under any circumstances. Such a waste of time and waste of your money to go here.

Minimalism maximized. I loved the atmosphere, the coffee was perfect, and the cake was brilliant. I recommend the place, especially for specialty coffee geeks, but for everybody with a focus on Scandinavian-style quality.

One of my all-time favourite spots for a quick lunch and coffee in Leiden! The staff are incredibly kind and friendly, even when they’re absolutely rushed off their feet and the place is heaving. The food always tastes lovely, and they refresh the menu with new items periodically, which keeps things interesting. I also like the handsoap in their restroom—so much that I ended up getting the same ones for home. :) I’ve been coming here for about a decade now, and I still pop in whenever I can. ❤️

The tastiest coffee from Leiden! Even the decaf (which is not drinkable at many places) tastes very good. You can also enjoy a delicious lunch here, inside or in the sun on the terrace. Definitely recommended!

Borgman is one of those places where you just want to be. Cozy, atmospheric, and only good products. Both coffee and sweets as well as sandwiches. We now opted for banana bread and cinnamon roll, but I will definitely come back for the beautiful and delicious other dishes and sandwiches.

Borgman is a very nice place if you are looking for good coffee that is prepared with love! The atmosphere is homely and hospitable, which makes you immediately feel at ease. The owners are always up for a chat, which adds to the warm ambiance. For me, Borgman is a wonderful place for a break during the weekly Saturday market shopping (nicely busy), or for a welcome break/outing while working from home during the week (nice and quiet). Very much recommended! What is also striking is the beautiful interior. You can tell that the interior was designed by someone who knows about it. Finally, I would like to add that the lunch kitchen has developed enormously over the years: really top lunches that I definitely recommend (fresh sandwiches, etc.). The breakfasts were always great anyway. Oh yes, and the toasted banana bread and the Basque cheesecake… SO GOOD

Dear parent(s ! You and your kids in a stroller are not welcome here! You are immediately turned away at the door because they say they are too small.... But they are wheelchair friendly....??? A wheelchair takes up just as much (sometimes more) space in terms of dimensions. Extremely unfriendly staff and policy. No filter coffee for the 1st because it's too busy? Uhm, hire more and pleasant staff, yes! only bring filter coffee to 1 table further? You can place a laptop at one table to do some work, but not at the other? Are you really feeling really good? Leiden has many more nice places where you and your kids and laptops are welcome....

I have never experienced such rude service at a coffee shop before! Especially the older man (I think the owner) could really be more customer friendly. Nowadays everyone carries their own coffee cup and I wanted to have a flat white in the city. In addition, I just don't like coffee in cardboard cups. This man refused to use my cup or rinse it with water because he said it would only make him wash dishes all day. He said this in a very annoying tone. I really wonder, do the people who drink coffee there and want a second coffee get their second coffee in unwashed dishes? It wouldn't have been a problem for me if he had just said no before rinsing but had simply put the coffee in my take-away cup without reacting so irritated. The customer is certainly not king here, that has been clear to me for a long time. Flat white was also the amount of two tablespoons! Would really recommend this place!

Today I had a special experience at Café Borgman in Leiden. I went there to work with my laptop because the weather was nice. I ordered a sandwich and got the usual glass of water. After a while an employee asked if I wanted something to drink, which I politely declined. His attitude felt awkward from the start, but I didn't pay any further attention to it as the rest of the staff were friendly. After waiting half an hour for my order, I opened my laptop to start working. The same employee came to me and told me that I was not allowed to sit at this table with my laptop, while another customer was working on his laptop. When I asked why that was, he said that I didn't consume anything, even though I had just ordered a sandwich. When he realized this, he apologized, but it remained that according to their policy, I was not allowed to sit at that table with my laptop. Although I indicated that this was new to me, I closed my laptop and continued eating. A little later the employee came back to emphasize that it wasn't personal, but honestly it felt that way. Apparently they don't want the cafe to become a workplace, which I can understand. Still, I found it strange that the policy only applies to certain seating areas. If it is a policy, it should apply everywhere in the cafe, not just at specific tables. It's a shame that situations like this still occur in 2024. I don't normally share stories like this, but sometimes it's necessary to create awareness. Despite this experience, the sandwich was very tasty, but I don't think I will sit here again anytime soon.

I don't think Borgman needs recommendations seeing that it's often hard to find a table :) The best flat white in town. One thing to improve for me is the interior. It looks all nice an minimalist, but the acoustics is terrible. It's probably difficult in the space, but consider something to dampen the sound? Maybe plants would help?

We ordered cappuccino, which normally should have milk as well in it, but we were served a cup with very strong espresso topped with thin foam, had nothing to do with cappuccino….they either do not know how to make a real capouccino or replacing milk with water to mske more profit. The chairs are very uncomfortable to make you sit max 5 minutes….we fully recommend you to find another place to get what you are paying for.

My wife and I have been guests here several times. We had good experiences here at both breakfast and lunch. The food is very tasty and the staff is also very friendly. If you can, you should enjoy the ambience outside on the canal. We can highly recommend this location!

Felt like sharing my experience since I saw so many good reviews. I was sitting there with my friend we ordered our drinks and everything was fine. We got asked if we wanted something again so I ordered a matcha latte which didn't come so they ended up asking me if I still wanted it. I declined and asked for water. The waiter (an older man) said, in a condescending tone, "You have to pay for water". I told him it was no problem so we ordered that and 2 cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls were mediocre at best. Went inside to ask for some forks since they were very sticky (I asked this in Dutch. I speak Dutch I am a native speaker, and since my friend doesn't we ordered in English as well). We got our stuff and got my friend was not even finished eating her pastry when the same guy came again asking if we were gonna order anything because we can't sit here all day. I understand that you can't sit at a café not ordering anything for a long time but we ordered multiple things and weren't even finished when they asked us to leave. When checking out I spoke in Dutch as before but the man kept speaking English to me. It was pretty weird. Nice location and all but being asked to leave when you aren't even finished isn't very welcoming and does not encourage customers to come again.

Great location, mediocre food and coffee, terrible service. Everyone who worked there looked as if you owed them something and acted like you inconvenienced them if you asked a question. After exactly 2 hours of sitting and reading, having already ordered a coffee and 2 pastries, I asked for more water and was told by a condescending man that I can't sit there all day and "just have water". I do not appreciate this way of running a business and will not be back.

I never leave a review but I feel obligated to warn people about how rude the owner of this place is for no reason??? Like don’t work in hospitality if it’s to do this ?? And we’re not the only ones to think this because we checked TripAdvisor reviews where he’s accurately described as an arrogant jellyfish among other things which is very funny and I think fits him perfectly. Anyways I do not recommend, neither me or my friends will ever return here and it’s a shame because the place is cute and the food great :/

Very tasty breakfast and coffee

The cinnamon bun had no deep cinnamon flavor or sweetness, the dough was quite dense as well which made it very heavy. The banana bread was hard to describe, you tasted banana, but there was some sort of extra flavor which was a bit weird and hard to place. The orange juice should be filtered as well.

Always a nice place for a coffee or other hot drink. Always friendly staff so far. Matcha latte is highly recommended. The avocado chocolate cake too. I find the iron chairs on the terrace a little less comfortable. Especially near the edge of the boat and the quay does not feel very stable. Furthermore, the other pastries looked very tasty 🥰

Half the times I come here there is no room and that is not without reason: the coffee they offer is excellent, the staff is friendly and the decor is sleek, modern and attractive. I also like Jochem Myjer's poem, although I don't take his advice to heart with this review.

Very nice coffe and matcha. You have to try the miso tosti! It is to die for! Only negative is that it takes FOREVER for the waiters to notice you and bring you your order. We waited 30 minutes for an iced tea and 55 minutes for a tosti..we had to leave so we took it to go.

Arguably one of the best filter coffee cafés in Leiden, great croissants and breakfasts! Wide range of beans for purchase and a small-cozy atmosphere. However usually incredibly busy so be prepared to wait a bit for your order. Otherwise a very recommendable place!
