Brasserie Bijts in Binnenstad

I don't give 5 stars easily; there is always room for improvement. But this one is worth 5 stars!

What an incredibly nice surprise! We walked up from the Market Square, and to be honest, Bijts didn't really stand out to me in terms of its exterior. We ended up sitting on the terrace, and I am so glad we did. We started with a glass of cava and bread with spreads. Actually, nothing more was needed. After the first bite and sip, we both knew: yes, we are going to have a very nice evening here. My wife Viviam is a vegetarian; gastronomically, I am pretty much on the other end of the spectrum. That makes dining out together quite difficult sometimes. Not at all at Bijts. I started with fantastic oysters, and later on, the yakitori skewers, among other things, came along. But the best part was that I became at least as enthusiastic about the vegetarian dishes. The spanakopita was truly fantastic. Not a vegetarian dish that is just there because it has to be, but food that has simply been seriously thought through. Full of flavor, surprising, and beautifully made. That is when we also understood where that level comes from. Next to Bijts sits Restaurant Barres, owned by the same proprietors and featured in the Michelin Guide. Bijts is a bit more accessible, but you can absolutely taste that experience and quality. The wine was a real treat, too. We drank a Château Angludet Margaux 2019 from Famille Sichel, from Barres' wine selection. You might not immediately expect a bottle like that at an accessible brasserie, but that is precisely what made the evening extra enjoyable. A Margaux with oysters might not be entirely textbook culinary, but to be honest, I didn't worry about it for a second. Delicious wine, fantastic oysters, and above all, pure enjoyment. Sometimes you just have to drink whatever you feel like. And then there's the service. We were served by a young man of just 17, and he truly deserves a special mention. Incredibly friendly, helpful, and attentive, with a natural ease in his service that many an experienced waiter could learn from. He made an already wonderful evening even more enjoyable. We actually ended up there more or less by chance and left feeling incredibly enthusiastic. We had a delicious meal, great wine, fantastic service, and above all, an incredibly enjoyable evening. It’s the kind of restaurant where, after the first sandwich, you already think: we’ll be back here. Or maybe next time at Barres. 😄

We thought it was a really nice place for dinner. We chose to have multiple rounds of the ‘snacks’ for dinner and that was really delicious. 3 rounds of 2 dishes each were enough for us to be full. Although afterwards we also had 2 pieces of cheese (for which we could choose the type ourselves) just to be tasty. We had called shortly beforehand to make a reservation and unfortunately it was already completely full inside. Luckily, we were still able to sit outside, although it was a bit empty there. The waitresses were very sweet and attentive!

We had a delicious meal; we didn't quite understand why it wasn't busy! The Iberico rib fingers are especially recommended!!

Plenty of choice for pregnant women too!

This afternoon, I ordered a delicious sharing platter with my daughter. The quality of the food is top-notch! The service was also very friendly.

The food isn't bad, but it is very bland and safe in terms of flavors and could be a bit more pronounced or exciting. Example: a Barra roll that looks and tastes like a regular bake-off roll straight from the oven. The menu looks more promising than the actual food tastes. The young staff does their best and is friendly.

What a farce. You sit waiting for 10 minutes, they see you sitting there but you don't get helped or told "we'll be right with you." I got the impression you don't exist. After 10 minutes, I just put on my coat and walked out of the place.

Simply amazing. Incredibly good value for money and superb service and atmosphere. It is evident from the dishes and the flavor combinations that there is passion in the kitchen for good food and fine ingredients. What a top-notch place!

We went for the first time today, but it was also our last. We ordered a platter for two, which was incredibly cheap. We ordered fries instead, but they weren't fries at all, but the crumbs from the bottom of the container. The waiter who served us was exceptionally friendly.

Nice place with a good accessible menu, only the service that comes every 5 minutes to ask if everything is to your liking, if there should be anything extra, or if something needs to be cleared, etc. did not really give us a peaceful experience.

What a lovely brasserie! We had made a late reservation but arrived way too early. No problem, with a little shuffling in the reservation book, it was easily taken care of. Excellent service and friendly staff. The food was truly delicious. The sharing platter seemed small but was more than enough! We will definitely eat here again.

Attractive and functional decor and ambiance. Reasonable pricing. Located in the picturesque capital of Zeeland, Middelburg. Without a doubt, highly recommended.

We had made a reservation with the neighbors, but ended up at the worst table in the back at Bijts. That was a huge disappointment. Luckily, we were able to move to the neighbors halfway through. Afterward, we had a wonderful evening.

We planned a cycling route from Zoutelande-Vlissingen-Middelburg. The night before, we looked for a (delicious) place to have lunch. My wife and I can only agree with the positive reviews. We had Loaded Nachos, Yakitori skewers, Wagyu burgers, and prawns in truffle hollandaise sauce. Delicious! Especially the sauce with the prawns.

First of all, compliments to the staff. Service is fast and friendly, and the kitchen knows what it's doing. The dishes are carefully prepared and, more importantly, all very tasty! We really liked the concept of various dishes, often in miniature format. We highly recommend trying some other dishes later!

The food was delicious, very refined cuisine. However, some dishes were bland, looked unappetizing, and the friandises dessert was a huge disappointment. Unfortunately, the service was very unfriendly; by the end of the evening, we felt like we were being ignored.

A leisurely lunch at a comfortable pace, with friendly service. The creations and flavors were of a high standard. You won't easily find that elsewhere. Lunch was our main meal that day, making it a great substitute and definitely worth repeating.

Yesterday, there were four of us at the table. What a lovely menu! First, an assortment of appetizers with a glass of delicious wine. Surprisingly delicious, definitely homemade with a special touch. The bisque really shows that they know how to cook. And then another dish. All four of us were so satisfied, so delicious, we really enjoyed it! The service also deserved a tip; it was super friendly, even though the terrace was packed. Definitely do it, finally something other than schnitzel and ribs. Best of luck!

Really tasty food at reasonable price

We had a delicious meal at Bijts with a group of 6 people! We did the chef's menu. Surprising dishes with a good price-quality ratio. It was nice that the main course came in three rounds, so we enjoyed it all evening. Staff regularly came by the table to ask if anything was needed. In short, highly recommended!

Gelegen op Plein 1940 met een groot terras met fijn meubilair. Vriendelijk personeel. Shared bites als concept, te bestellen in verschillende hoeveelheden. Leuk concept en lekkere en verrassende gerechtjes zowel koud als warm. Lekkere wijnen ook.

Large variety of very tasty dishes in a pleasant atmosphere. It would be even better if the serving would be a little more at the same time because of... sharing it with your table companions. Then you actually eat together.

On the advice of a reception employee at the Van der Valk hotel in Middelburg, I made an appointment here to eat with my son. We opted for the option that they put together the menu, taking into account any wishes. It was downright delicious! Beautiful combinations and just right. Not too much and certainly not too little. This in combination with the cheerful and friendly ladies at the service made it a very successful evening for us.

Gezellige sfeer, hele vriendelijke en goede bediening.(dat zie je helaas ook niet meer overal) Het eten is echt heerlijk, niet de gewone hollandse/spaanse tapas. Top restaurant, especially the mints are great

We left disappointed. Some dishes were tasty, other dishes were very bland (such as the pearl couscous), could certainly use improvement and more flavor. We also did not understand the design of the restaurant, too many different styles that did not form a nice whole, a mismatch with the concept. Service was very friendly.

We hebben heerlijk gegeten. Het waren verrassende hapjes en de bediening was zeer attente. Wij hadden het verrassingsmenu.

Na er al enkele keren lang te hebben gelopen toch maar eens gaan zitten bij Brasserie Bijts. En wat hebben wij genoten! Een fijne sfeer waarbij je je je niet gedwongen voelt en dit was het lekkerste wat we hebben gehad deze vakanties. Jammer dat we hier niet eerder zijn geweest!

Sehr schönes Restaurant mit Außenbereich. Sehr schmackhaftes Essen. Der Service ist sehr freundlich und schnell. Dieses Restaurant kann man nur empfehlen.

Iconic.tasty.food ! one of the best places I’ve been to eat ! Looking at a few of the other recessions- read the menu! It’s a sort of high end tapas ! all nicely made, fresh and tasty and not princely when you look at what you get! Perfect taste and very nice and interesting combinations of ingredients and flavours! sure we will be back!

The food was very good, but in very small portions. Above all everything comes one after the other. Each new course was only prepared when the other was cleared away. Sometimes up to 30 minutes passed. In total we spent 3 hours there. Our next course was even forgotten twice. I left hungry when I came and for a lot of money. It's a shame about your life.

The bites are refined in terms of composition and taste! The service is extremely friendly with explanations about each bite! When visiting Middelburg this is a MUST to visit!!!

Delicious dishes, everything was super tasty. We were able to sit outside very comfortably even though it became a bit chilly, partly thanks to the heater and heated cushions. The staff is super friendly and hospitable. If I can recommend 3 bites: Iberico rib fingers, Wagyu burgers and the Spanakopita. But all the other little “Bites” were also super tasty!! We will definitely come back 🤩

Food was all fresh and prepared with care. Price to quality ratio. You pay too much for snacks that are too small. I spent €53 for three snacks and bread with spread + 3 drinks and left the table with a not too full belly. Friendly staff. Cozy restaurant layout.

The food was very good, but not my thing and I don't want to criticize the restaurant for that. It is a modern line of small snacks that has received the necessary attention, but this is not really my preference. The staff is very friendly and they paid enough attention to all tables. We sat at the back and we immediately noticed that the lamp hanging above the table was very bright. All in all, definitely a restaurant where you can have a bite to eat. What I found very unfortunate and actually foolish is using a mocking image of Christ at the Lord's Supper as an eye-catcher. Personally, I don't understand why you want to do this as a restaurateur when you know that half of Walcheren has a Christian background to a greater or lesser extent. It's insulting! Nowadays it is all the rage to ridicule or call faith or authority worthless. Personally, I would kindly ask, in this way, to remove that cartoon. You don't mock things you don't understand and you don't do that with Islam either. Or will there also be a cartoon of Mohammed? I do not think so.......

Looking for a cozy and affordable place to eat. Friendly welcome and found a nice spot. Delicious platter for two people, tasty beers. Sufficient and good. Lots of choice on the menu. Served quickly.

Arranged the reservation with Madelief via Instagram. Very friendly help. Upon arrival, the table was decorated for my husband's birthday. The principle of shared dining is fun. The dishes are very tasty. The service was friendly. All in all a successful evening.

Good quality food, nice twist on dishes. The concept took some getting used to, but it is really well thought out. Pleasant service, although the atmosphere could be a bit more homely/more appropriate to the quality of the food.

We had lunch here around 12 noon. The service was very friendly and always available to help quickly. It wasn't too busy at the time, which made the service even more personal. The food was very tasty and for the price it was definitely worth it. For lunch I would definitely recommend this place!

Food is pricey for what you get. The bites are well thought out, but the flavors could really be better! Tough tibfingers 3.5 pieces for more than €11 is really way too much. The staff just stands around talking to each other. Bread with spreads is really a mockery! And if you say something to staff about things not being good, you get 0.0 response. No, stay away from here and go to a good restaurant. After a few dishes we left and finished our dinner with the neighbors

Genoten! Onverwachts bij dit restaurant uitgekomen, maar wat een ervaring. Bediening is super vriendelijk en is enorm goed op elkaar ingespeeld en dat is te merken. Eten was erg goed! Wij hebben zo genoten en zijn dan ook lekker lang blijven hangen.

What an incredible sensation of flavors. In our opinion at the moment the best place to eat at very high quality. The staff is very friendly and very competent. Whoever came to the table could immediately explain the menu without any doubt. We were very surprised by the dishes. Making this a must for people who expect a culinary tour de force.

What a nice new addition to Middelburg! The dishes are very original and delicious. Looks a bit sad on the plate (at 4 pcs) but the taste makes up for it. Steak could be a little more tender. The design of the business is very varied. Good chairs 😀
