The food was impeccable! I have travelled the world with work and can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The team were incredible, so attentive and kind. I will be recommending this place to everyone that visits Amsterdam.

Had the loveliest solo dinner at Gebr. Hartering on my last night in Amsterdam before heading to Antwerp. Everything about the evening felt special, the food was impeccable, the service was warm and attentive without ever feeling forced, and the atmosphere was exactly my kind of vibe: intimate, lively, a little jammy, and effortlessly cool. What made the night even sweeter was ending up chatting with two lovely girls seated beside me, one of those unexpected travel moments that reminds you how beautiful dining alone can be. Thank you for such a memorable final evening in Amsterdam. I’ll definitely be thinking about this place long after I leave.

Today was the second time we came to eat here and it was very disappointing compared to the last time. We ordered the beef again, received half fat, and the other half consisted of raw and well done, with nothing in between. For this price, there should be some consistency... I recommended this place to friends after the first time, if only I could take back my words... I don't think I will be coming back here for the 3rd time. I want to give 1 star but you get a 2nd because the first time was really good.

I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this. Across our 10 day trip in Europe this was the best meal we had. The prime rib is maybe the best I’ve had in my life. The staff is super friendly, the space is comfortable and in a really cool neighborhood on a canal. If you’re in Amsterdam, you really need to get to this place. It is pricey, but it’s absolutely worth it.

We did the seven course tasting menu with wine pairing and it was exceptional. However, the food was outshone by our server Celwyn. He provided the best service I've ever had. Reserve this evening with confidence but plan for at least a 3 hour dinner if you are doing the seven course tasting.

5-star experience all around! From the service, to the atmosphere, to the food, every part of our dinner was sensational. It started with the bread and butter, and ended with the homemade vanilla ice cream with whipped egg nog. No bad order—every item I wanted another round of. Come here!!

It was okay, but not great. The service was friendly and helpful, although there were a few small mistakes, such as forgetting things we had asked for. The interior is cozy, but also quite dusty and not very clean or well finished. The food was okay — technically correct and properly seasoned — but nothing particularly special or worth the price you pay. Like many restaurants in the Netherlands, the focus seemed to be more on the wine than on the food.

Well known to be a top restaurant in Amsterdam and it’s well deserved! The food is amazing, presenting local ingredients in a creative way, and perfectly executed! The natural wines we had were also all fantastic! 5 stars, recommended!

This restaurant is one of the few places in Amsterdam where you will still find cotton tablecloths and truly personal service. At the start of the evening, coats are neatly taken, and the endless time of eating, drinking, and good times begins. The wine list is structured by region and type of wine, ensuring an abundance of choice of delicious wines. The food comes with flavors and textures combined that are truly worth pausing to chew and savor what you are eating. I can particularly recommend the cheese board. It is one with depth of flavor. Delicious. And then, after nearly 4 hours, the evening comes to an end. And who remembered which coats belonged to which customer? That's right. This amazing personal service! My new favorite restaurant <3

It has been a very long time since we last visited, but what a lovely place. Friendly service, comfortable tables, fine wines, and truly delicious food. Thanks for the wonderful evening!

This is a fantastic institution. It is a lovely space - perfectly suited for the appreciation of food and wine, and for conversation. My meal was accompanied by the sound of laughter - from the diners but also from the chefs, which is definitely a good sign. It started and finished with perfection - a celery and tamara amuse-bouche, and a blood orange meringue respectively. In between there were great things... though the strikingly presented squid dish looks mire interesting than it tastes, and the rib of beef - a house specialty - came heavily salted and without a jus. This is a shame - good meat should not need much salt, and can be roasted over lemon and thyme at home... so something to elevate it into a higher class would be desirable. But enough of food. The wine list!! An astonishing work of art. This has certainly been compiled with the love of wine. Aged white Rioja! A choice of Savennières!! There is an excellent choice of wines by the glass, perfectly matched to the food. So overall an great experience - with friendly and knowledgeable service to match. The food is perhaps a little short of superb but the overall experience is just wonderful.

Beautiful cosy restaurant with faultless service - extremely attentive and kind. Unfortunately the food didn’t quite match - the prime rib was cooked bleu, which was way too rare for us. Big bits of unrendered fat was left on. Starters were just okay considering the price. Wine was delicious & ambiance was perfect.

Welcoming, cosy and great food (and wine). When a friend and me (both from the UK) visited on the chilly evening of Tuesday 20th January this charming restaurant - in a lovely location (on a small quiet street next to a canal) - was mostly frequented by Dutch folk. It had a lovely ambience enhanced further by crisp white tablecloths on every table and friendly, appropriately attentive staff. Will aim to return when next in Amsterdam.

This restaurant was easily the highlight of our entire trip to Amsterdam. The food surpassed everything else we ate by 100%. We opted for the tasting menu, and it was an incredible experience. Every plate felt like a genuine surprise being delivered to our table. A few standouts that we are still thinking about were the oyster mousse on the sea bass, the roasted cabbage, the wild duck and the gingerbread cake. Beyond the food, the service was impeccable. The pacing of the courses couldn't have been better—we never felt rushed, yet never felt ignored. The staff clearly cares about what they do; the food felt thoughtful and intentional without ever feeling pretentious. We would come back to Amsterdam just to eat here again. If you are in the city, do not miss this place.

Our visit to Brothers Hartering was magnificent, both for the culinary experience and the service. We chose the five-course menu—three starters, a main course, and a dessert—and, overall, it was a great choice. The food stood out for its quality, although the last course didn't quite impress us. Although the restaurant is small, the aroma wafting from the kitchen fills the entire space, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience. The welcoming atmosphere and the enticing scents made this dinner a perfect way to say goodbye to Amsterdam. It's not an inexpensive place, but the quality of both the service and the food more than makes up for it.

Top-notch service with helpful and friendly staff. The food was very tasty; interestingly, the standout dishes for us were the vegetarian options. Lastly, their selection of wines is great as well.

Great menu with daily meat and fish. The starters are meant to be shared which creates a family-style athmosphere. The view on the canal from the subterranean was also very peaceful and service was excellent!

Another great meal here. We had the 5 course meal, and I chose to go with the prime rib supplement - which was to die for. This was one of the best steaks I have had in a while. Everything else, from the starters to dessert were delicious to a fault. The service was excellent as well, and they have an excellent lager on tap (Gulpener) that I strongly suggest you try if you are a fan of lagers.

A feast for the senses! What a pleasure to discover the cuisine of these two brothers! Perfect balance of flavors, surprising discoveries, 100% homemade with love. I was a bit disappointed by the overall experience at this place. To start with the positives, the place has cozy vibes, the overall atmosphere looks great and the staff are super friendly and welcoming. The food menu has some nice options, the plates came beautifully decorated. However the taste is below average. We tried different things and nothing was wow compared to what we thought it would be. The overall noise level is too much since the tables are close. Still try it, but for me it was good for a one time thing.

Delicious food and good wine. A cozy, intimate atmosphere.

The flavours and texture are simply perfect. Cabbage for starters, crispy and full of flavours, blitzed hazelnuts on top and a creamy well balanced butter sauce. Main, a flat fish fried skinside down with very tender meat, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, and a herb (parsley?) cream. Sounds basic? Not if it’s perfect. The beurre blanc sauce took it to another level. Perfect acidity snd saltiness. Service, very dutch, no extra smiles, which was also not needed, because the food speaks for itself. The waiters could explain exactly how the food was prepared which made me think that the waiters are also chefs. I will definitely come back.

Lovely atmosphere, very cozy restaurant. The cuts are superb and the staff is very kind and knowledgeable on the menu, they are able to describe on detail every single item on the menu, ensuring you have a tailor-made experience. Impressive wine selection as well. It was my mum’s birthday and they brought a candle with the dessert so we could have a little celebration moment, a very lovely gesture. I would say it’s my favorite restaurant in Amsterdam.

A true gem of Amsterdam! What a cozy spot to enjoy fantastic cuisine. A rare culinary highlight in Amsterdam. I recently had another fantastic evening. It's so special... I can understand why they're full!

We had a fantastic evening at Hartering. The service was expert and extremely courteous. The menu is small, but the dishes are creative and delicious. We had pre-cured cod with Jerusalem artichoke, veal tongue with a kind of ravigote sauce, brioche with ceps and egg yolk, and for the main course, casseler rib with sauerkraut and beef rib. Tarte tatin with crème fraîche ice cream for dessert, and we were completely satisfied. We were seated in a rather unusual alcove in the basement, which gave us a great view of all the boats sailing by. We will definitely be back.

This was really horrible we were seated on the ground floor which was stinking . The chicken was basically boiled with vefetables soaked in vinegar 😩

This is in the top 5 for best meals i’ve ever had. The staff are excellent and friendly, the atmosphere is cozy, and the food is top tier. If I could leave 10 stars I would, I highly recommend this place!

To summarize: good service, good atmosphere, and the appearance of a fine-dining restaurant. A strange first part: both the wines by the glass and most of the wines on the menu are notable for their low quality (unusual in a supposedly gourmet restaurant). The raw materials, fish and meat, are good, but poorly prepared. The side dishes are rather poorly chosen, and the dishes are poorly paired. The cuisine is mediocre. You can see good intentions and work behind them, but the result is very poor. I never usually leave bad reviews, especially not for places where the service is good, but in this case, the quality is so far removed from the price, and it's such an obvious "I want to, but I can't" that I recommend you don't trust the good reviews.

This is one of the places that makes Amsterdam great! Authentic, well run, the food is delicious and creative, the stuff is professional and genuine, the atmosphere is what Amsterdam was, is and will always be. A place not to miss and come back to again and again. See you soon!

Highly recommended! A very creative menu and enthusiastic staff who can make excellent wine recommendations. Delicious bread was also a plus. No 5 euros for water, just regular tap water, very polite. Beautiful wine glasses to drink from. I personally enjoyed the brioche with cepes best, and my boyfriend had the chicken, the skin perfectly crispy with a delicious potato side. We had the 7 courses but found it a bit too much, as the portions are quite large. I forgot to take a picture of the cheese, which was also very tasty (three pieces each: hard cheese, epoise, and blue). Everything is shared, which is very nice. I also thought the steak tartare was one of the highlights. It's quite a small restaurant, but that's precisely what makes it cozy and very Amsterdam-like.

First time here via Google. We were given a lovely, romantic spot by the window. We had a 5-course menu and an amuse-bouche that was too strong for us. After that, the kitchen really got us going. Every course was fantastic, the white wine tasted great. We had a wonderful evening. Thanks!

We travelled to Amsterdam especially with a view to visit this restaurant and it didn't disappoint. A wonderful atmosphere and brilliant staff. Then the food...absolutely delicious!! highly recommend.

Viajando aquí en Amsterdam, estábamos buscando un restaurante de barrio lejos de las zonas turísticas, que sirve un menú de vuelo superior, en un ambiente más pequeño acogedor. Comprobar, comprobar y comprobar - este es el lugar! Nos topamos con este lugar después de buscar el lugar al otro lado de la calle que estaba cerrada ese día. Pedimos ver el menú, pero no tenían uno, ya que el menú es lo que el chef decide para ese día. ¡Ese es el tipo de nuestro esfuerzo y arte en una comida que hace que todo lo que tuvimos esta noche sea tan grande! Tuvimos la comida de cinco platos (y nos acomodaron con una alternativa de pescado a la panza de cerdo y costilla de primera que eran los platos principales para la noche) que fue increíble, hasta el último detalle, que el chef aquí toma para asegurar, y se nota. Recomiendo encarecidamente y estamos agradeciendo a nuestros sentidos arácnidos por ser capaz de encontrar este lugar tan al azar.

Really good restaurant! We enjoyed our dinner. The atmosphere is great, it smells like freshly baked sourdough when you walk in, and the bread is extremely fresh and delicious. The appetizers (€20) and main dishes (€35) were also very good, great flavors. Only thing that I can comment on is the price, it’s quite expensive. We paid €200 for two starters & three main dishes & 4 glasses of wine. We decided to eat a la carte, maybe it’s cheaper when you order 5/6 courses, but still we thought the price wasn’t very justified. And one specific other thing, I ordered the fish of the day, and I noticed that the skin on the fish was quite burnt (see pictures), still good though.

Estábamos en la parte del sótano del restaurante y nos alegramos de ello ya que la sección superior parecía caliente y ruidoso. Sin duda un restaurante y menú inusual pero agradable y un punto de diferencia en una ciudad con miles de lugares para comer.

Small, very cozy restaurant with 20 seats.

Had a lovely time here with my partner. Ordered the seven course taster and was not disappointed at all. The sea bass and morels were the highlight, closely followed by the prime rib which only lost out due to a tougher chew on the exterior. The flavour and interior cuisson were on point though. First time I've had veal tongue, was good but calling for some acid or a pop of interest. Also, the downstairs window seats overlooking the water are great despite their quieter location.

My partner’s dad who recommended the place and we decided to celebrate our anniversary there. The food was very delicious, the best food I ate in Amsterdam for sure. Nice restaurant if you sit upstairs. We sat downstairs in the basement, which looked more like an old storage room, which is not recommended. Food and service were good.

Sehr freundlicher Empfang. Ausgewogenes Menü mit super Prime rib als Hauptgang wie gewünscht gebraten. Der Fisch in der Vorspeise war sehr gut in Olivenöl eingelegt. Dessert hat noch Potenzial. Top Weinkarte mit guter Auswahl zu guten Preisen.

Diner downstairs with a group. Food was excellent. Server was great but as we sit in the basement there was sometimes a lot of disturbance from other quest going to the bathroom.

Visited Amsterdam from the US and did a lot of research on where to eat before landing on this restaurant. It beat every other place we went by a mile. We got the 5 course menu and it did not disappoint at all. The kohlrabi and miso to start off was very refreshing. The cod with artichoke was complex yet the flavors integrated so well. We loved the veal and mushroom toast also. We wanted to try both the chicken and prime rib so added on that to one. The chicken had all the flavors across the spectrum and it worked very well. The prime rib was expertly aged and the smells as they delivered it were exquisite. Lastly the dessert was fantastic and a great way to cap off our meal and trip. One of the chefs would deliver each course and explain what each dish was in a clear way and answered our questions too. I gave 4 stars for the atmosphere only because some of the tables are placed in odd spots. Our heads were up against the bar where the chefs cook, so a bit of an awkward place and height, but it didn’t impact our meal. I would highly recommend coming here and if I ever make it back, we will be eating again!

Beautiful classic place with a lot of soul and beautiful meals. Personally just a little too much meat, but very tasty.

Wonderful bistro not far from the heart of Amsterdam

We came to eat here after hearing so much about it. Upon entering, the atmosphere is pleasant, but very crowded. We were seated at a table under the kitchen counter, where it was not very comfortable, and which was clearly too small for dinner. We took the menu with three starters to share and one main. First they brought us a ceviche that was very good and balanced in taste, then a steak tartare that, although the ingredients were good, there was too much tabasco and the taste of the meat was masked, and finally a brioche toast with a cured egg with soy sauce and mushroom sauce and sour cream, the latter was also very successful. The second was porchetta with baked beans and cavolo nero sauce/purée. Here it failed miserably, the beans had too strong a taste and completely covered the cabbage (which with its herbaceous taste went very well with the porchetta), and the porchetta at the same time was not well cooked, it was soft and not at all crunchy. For dessert, they brought us a salted caramel ice cream that was also good, although a little salty, but with a very pleasant bitterness to clean the mouth. The wine was really good and right, they know what they are doing here and the service was nice and attentive. While overall it wasn't bad, I feel the value for money could be improved.

Nice atmosphere, excellent service, nice extensive wine list and a surprising menu with beautiful ingredients. The langoustines make the perfect appetizer, and the small surcharge for the rib is absolutely worth it - 5 courses were more than enough for us, as the portions are extremely generous. Definitely recommended, this was not the first time we stayed at Gebr. Hartering and certainly not the last time!

The restaurant is small and cosy in a quiet area of Amsterdam, staff are really friendly, and food was really tasty. My only complaint was that at least half of our prime rib was chewy fat with zero meat on it. We felt the price point was quite high considering this.

Absolutely delicious, a nice array of skill, tradition and reinvention. Cozy space, water level (lower basement seating) was a nice array of like with a water view. The waitress was highly educated on both the food menu and wine menu making very good recommendations fitting the 5-course menu. The meal was filling and diverse. My guest did not consume fish or seafood as requested and the meal was well recommend by the Michelin guide. A lovely experience I wish I could share at home in Chicago

Very nice atmosphere, professionals in the kitchen and in the service (especially the blonde lady!). The surprise menu contained refined and very tasty dishes. Highly recommended.

Et rigtig lækkert spisested med dejlig mad og en behagelig betjening. Retterne er meget små, så man bliver umiddelbart ikke helt mæt af kun en hovedret. Fik forret, hovedret samt dessert (ost), et glas vin samt en kop te. Alt i alt en super god oplevelse, lidt i den dyre ende men pengene værd.

El menú es lo que cocina el chef esa noche. Siempre una selección de pescado, carne y costilla de primera, así como aperitivos y postre. Hay opciones a la carta o cena de 4 o 5 platos para compartir o no. Después de mucha confusión entendiendo las opciones para nosotros 4, la cena fue muy buena. No es el mejor lugar para comer exigente, pero bueno para los aventureros, sin estar demasiado loco. Todos disfrutamos de nuestras cenas.

This was a really really special meal. I don’t know if I would call it French. It’s just modern cuisine focused on fresh local ingredients. The sea bass tartare was my favorite dish. The grilled octopus on Romesco was also incredible. And we added a cheese course and had the best blue cheese I’ve ever eaten. But beyond the food, what made this dinner so special was the service. The entire waitstaff knows everyone in the restaurant, looks happy to be there, and speaks to you on a personal level that makes you feel like you’re the most important diner in the restaurant. Floris gave us incredible wine recommendations. Also, the space is very cozy. The tables are almost too close together but the intimacy adds to the vibe. It was not at all stuffy. Attire can be anything from casual to button down. There were people there in sweatshirts. Some sweaters. Lots of button downs. Nearly everyone was in sneakers including the waitstaff. They want you to feel comfortable. I loved everything about this experience.

Perfect. Excited for these brothers to get their Michelin star - this quality of dining is rare. Left smiling as I remembering the importance of true service. Every time I’m back in Amsterdam, I will visit this gem to show my respects.

Disappointed vs expectations. We had been looking forward to going after moving locally. Food was just okay - monkfish was the standout alongside the iberico jamon. Service was slow for us; our starters came out 15 mins apart and the team forgot about our desserts.
