Café Bern in Nieuwmarkt/Lastage

The prime rib was delicious, but the rest was incredibly disappointing. The hype surrounding Cafe Bern is completely unwarranted, in my opinion. There were no vegetables to dip in your cheese fondue, just the prime rib, and you could simply order a salad with sauce. We were also constantly reminded to order the next item quickly because we could only stay so late. "Do you want to order dessert? You have 20 minutes left before your reservation ends." This happened several times. The coziness and hospitality are completely gone. I recommend Het Karbeel or Proeflokaal van Wees for a cheese fondue; the service there is much warmer and there's a wider selection of vegetables for dipping. The decor is also much more inviting.

It was raining in Amsterdam and we casually found this cozy restaurant. It was just what we needed! Deli cheese fondue, bread, meat. The waiter was really kind and helped us pick. Only bad thing would say they dont have coke zero :(

It says it opens at 4:00 PM, but the kitchen doesn't open until 6:00 PM. I can't judge the food because I didn't get to eat. It smelled pretty bad.

"Mini Switzerland at Nieuwmarkt" It's like walking into a tiny piece of Switzerland, but without the mountains and with considerably more Amsterdammers. The atmosphere is old-fashioned cozy—the kind of coziness that makes you crave cheese, candlelight, and a bit of chaos. The service is friendly and just cluttered enough to remain charming. The menu is small (literally and figuratively), but what's on it is spot on: delicious cheese fondue that'll almost make you want to renew your passport, prime rib to cheer you up, and surprisingly tasty salads for those who want to feel healthy for a bit. The house wine? Perfectly acceptable—and that's sometimes exactly the rating you're hoping for after a pan of cheese fondue. In short: Swiss coziness without the alpine boots. Cafe Bern is a rare gem in Amsterdam. Cozy, local, authentic. I’ve spent hours here luxuriating over fondue and l’entrecote. Some of my best memories are at Cafe Bern. What a special place.

Great fondue, and a good menu for even the non-cheese eaters. A very cozy place!

The guy behind the bar was incredibly arrogant this evening. Upon entering, I was initially ignored. It turned out we were all booked, understandable on a Thursday evening, so we were offered to eat at the bar. I was with an older group, so I politely said we'd look elsewhere. Then, coldly, I was told "I have every right to do so." Perhaps this is part of a supposedly direct style, but it's simply passive-aggressive and inhospitable. I've eaten here before with family, but this was the last time. That's no way to treat people, is it?

Super cool and delicious! On the other hand, the fondue with meat is almost nothing to write home about, which is a shame!

A super cozy place on the Nieuwmarkt. Right in the heart of Amsterdam, and Bern exudes that vibe. Just sit down and enjoy a delicious cheese fondue. It's a shame we weren't allowed to eat outside...

One of the best cheese fondues in Amsterdam. Although I found it very salty the last time I visited, two months ago. Another drawback is that you're often crammed together at a table with other people. Oh yeah, and I also want to mention something really disappointing: the last time I was there, the waitress told me the baguette was always unlimited. It's a shame, because we were never told that before. Then you'd finish your half baguette, but still have fondue left. It's a shame they didn't mention that the last time. Otherwise, it's a great place.

A simple menu but with very tasty dishes. The steak with pepper sauce is highly recommended. Friendly and helpful staff.

Supposedly the best cheese fondue in town. I found the service a bit disappointing. It was incredibly busy, and there were still people at our reserved table (whom the waitstaff had us push away by standing next to). Some of the staff were very friendly, others not. The staff also let in men with Polaroid cameras who wanted to take pictures of you for money. This happened several times that evening. It was also way too warm inside. The fondue was fine. Luckily, my companions made sure it was still a lot of fun :)

Delicious food at an affordable price, Swiss, yet also very Amsterdam, centrally located on the Nieuwmarkt. An authentic restaurant that hasn't had to change its menu or decor for decades because it's simply good.

Been coming here for years & still love it. Service is always efficient & at least moderately friendly. Food is yum! Cheese fondue, entrecote & the bean salad is the winning combo as far as I'm concerned. All set to the backdrop of a very unpretentious, cosy Amsterdam establishment. Do book ahead as I see them turn away dozens of people every time we go.

Entrecote bern remains top and unique. Cheese fondue is also very good. We drank a delicious rioja riserva with it. I would recommend it to everyone. Service correct, Amsterdam.. Will come back soon.

Perfect experience. Came here because of the red light festival to guess the cheese of the cheese fondue. Were received very friendly and the cheese tasted delicious. So if you fancy cheese fondue, don't hesitate!

Accueil froid, on nous propose de partager une table avec des gens, mais impossible de passer entre la table et le mur. (Ma fille de 8 ans fait 25 kilos, donc toute fine). On décide de partir mais on nous propose une table normale de 4. La serveuse fait la gueule, n’explique pas le menu. Les spaghetti bolognaises sont épicées et ma fille n’a pas pu les manger. Quand vous avez fini votre plat, personne pendant 25 minutes (restaurant pas complet) et pas de dessert proposés. On est parti, à fuir. La fondue bien que correcte ne mérite pas de se faire mépriser autant.

Always delicious food, not much choice but what you can choose (we always choose the cheese fondue and the meat fondue) is always great! Nowhere else has such a delicious cheese fondue as there and we like to come from Leiden to Amsterdam especially for this!

You can't go wrong with boiling cheese but what really surprised all of us was how good the salad was. Three steak with peppercorn sauce was fat better than any steak we had during our visit.

Vimos las críticas quejándose de un mal servicio, pero decidimos darle una oportunidad de todos modos, ya que fue recomendado por un amigo que vive en Amsterdam - tal vez tuvimos suerte, pero nos pareció que el personal agradable y servicial en explicar el menú (que está en holandés solamente). Esta fue nuestra primera experiencia de fondue y nos recomendaron platos y pacientemente nos ayudaron cuando nos avergonzamos por tener el calor demasiado alto y luego no saber cómo apagarlo... La zona alrededor del restaurante no es la más agradable, pero una vez dentro tiene un gran ambiente y deliciosa comida. Sin duda recomendaría.

Delicious cheese fondue and entrecote (prepare yourself). In my memory (20 years ago), the Yemeni lettuce was better in taste, but certainly still a good combination with the cheese.

Don't even think about ordering the fondue for the number of diners you have... it's practically impossible to finish it. At the end of the day, it's about filling bread dipped in melted cheese... and the cheese is very strong. If there are 3 of you, I recommend fondue for 1... ouch! Anyway, if you like powerful melted cheese, this is your place... let's go champion!

Fondue at €23 per person. ultra salty and diluted with alcohol, all served with canteen bread. I admit I don't understand the glowing comments about it. The only positive point being the servers who are very friendly.

This café-restaurant is in a nice location. The menu is small, but the food quality is good. The interior is very basic, without any frills, but the atmosphere is cozy. The staff is friendly and helpful. The starter salad was large and well-seasoned. The main course featured well-prepared meat, but personally, I was disappointed that no fries were served only bread. I would have preferred a different option. One big plus: it’s not expensive. Considering the quality, it’s great value for money. Overall, it’s a good place if you enjoy simple, well-prepared food without too much fuss.

Veel gehoord over de fantastische kaasfondue. Die was naast de entrecote ook echt heerlijk. Wijnen dikke prima, maar wat een onaardig personeel. Arrogant en niet gasvrij. Best cheese fondue in the Netherlands

Had to wait 45 minutes while we reserved.. super small amount was compensated but waiting that long has left a bit of a sour taste. If I reserve at a certain time, I want to be seated at that time. Why else would I reserve?

Swiss restaurant in the center of Amsterdam offers an excellent fondue accompanied by baguettes. The entrecote with its green sauce is also very good. Good beers. Quick and friendly service

Rustic atmosphere, very busy even during the Dutch holidays. Service staff were very nice but tried to cope with the rush. The only negative note was that it was pointed out several times that the slot ended at 1,930 and then several tables were unoccupied. Very narrow card. But nonetheless delicious fondue, entrecote and vegetarian pasta were delicious.

We booked late at about 9:45pm restaurant is very compact, we were placed on the end of another groups table, i felt it was too loud to even talk to my partner properly across the table, and every-time someone walked past it shook the table couldn’t enjoy a nice meal properly due to this. However the food was very good so i can’t fault them on that and the service was very quick and staff quite friendly

La fondue estaba bien... pero no mejor que la peor que he tenido, incluso en los Estados Unidos... pero el servicio es lo que mató la experiencia para nosotros. Quizá ganen más dinero del que necesitan y puedan permitirse rechazar a personas con hijos. Mi madre, mi hijo y yo habíamos estado esperando esta experiencia, ya que nos encanta la fondue y queríamos que la primera experiencia de fondue de mi hijo fuera buena. Habíamos traído algunas patatas fritas de otro lugar en caso de que a mi hijo de 5 años no le gustara la fondue, y el camarero inmediatamente nos rechazó. Le dije que los pondría en mi bolso, pero no quería que mi hijo se pusiera nervioso si tenía hambre y no le gustaba la fondue. Después de un tet - a - tet, y luego una conversación con él mgr, decidieron "dejarnos entrar". Eso sí, estábamos sentados en el patio y no es un restaurante de 4 estrellas... luego le di a mi hijo un poco de jugo de mi bolso antes de que volviera a tomar nuestra orden de bebidas y el camarero una vez más se volvió loco y nos dijo que tendríamos que irnos porque le di a mi hijo una bebida que no habíamos pedido al restaurante. Eso sí, nos había dejado sentados allí, como un castigo, durante 20 minutos antes de venir a leernos el acto antidisturbios sobre nuestro jugo... y una vez que lo volví a poner en mi bolso, explicándole que mi hijo tenía sed, pidiendo una bebida para él y pidiendo bebidas para mi madre y para mí, dijo una vez más, “podíamos quedarnos”... ¿qué diablos? ¿Se suponía que estábamos agradecidos? Solo queríamos algo de comida... No volvería si fuera el único lugar abierto. Como dije, la comida era sabrosa, pero eso es lo mejor que puedo decir de este lugar. Hay literalmente miles de otros lugares que son 100 veces mejores en Ámsterdam que recomiendo encarecidamente.

Lovely classic local favourite with a simple menu. The café Bern entrecôte was super tender and the fondue was chefs kiss. Both the white and red house wine was lovely. We will surely come back!

Deliciosa comida, pero desafortunadamente la (falta de) servicio dejó un sabor agrio. Pedimos el filete de entrecote, fondue de queso y ensalada de ajo - todo estaba delicioso y la cantidad perfecta de comida para 2 . Se sentía como un verdadero placer, y disfrutamos de la experiencia. Debo estar de acuerdo con otras críticas en que la fondue tenía un extraño tinte de vino blanco, pero disfrutamos de ella. Sin embargo, el servicio fue menos que favorable. Esperamos 5 minutos de pie en la puerta antes de que un camarero se acercara a nosotros, a pesar de hacer contacto visual con varios empleados. Durante la comida queríamos pedir más bebidas, pero no vinieron camareros a nuestra mesa, y los platos no se despejaron al final. A pesar del servicio, recomiendo encarecidamente este restaurante por un ambiente acogedor y deliciosa comida. ¡Asegúrese de reservar con suficiente antelación!

What a find amazing place we had fondue and steak 🥩😁 if you ever go to Amsterdam visit this restaurant you won't be dissappinted. Make sure you book it gets busy and we now know why we will certainly be booking on our next visit. The atmosphere is electric and the service from all the staff is welcoming and polite. Here it is now possible to view and buy unique original paintings by Peter Faber. My advice: buy those paintings because the chance to acquire a Peter Faber painting is a unique opportunity. The paintings are an inspiration and motivation for life. The vitamin pills (that's what Peter Faber calls his paintings) are colorful, cheerful gems. There is always a bird in it (message: open up your mind), a turtle (message: trust your own wisdom), a snail (message: take it easy, if you don't achieve your personal goal today, you can still do it next week succeed) and last but not least the butterfly (message: a butterfly only emerges once in its life, a person has the opportunity to set and achieve a new goal many times in his or her life). Peter's message: life is a wonderful adventure. Tip from Gerrit-Jan Meerbeek (a Peter Faber fan).

We komen hier al jaren met een vriendengroep. Om de paar maanden eerst borrelen en dan eten bij Bern. De entrecote of de kaasfondue is als vanouds heerlijk. En natuurlijk de scherpe knoflooksalade is een vaste starter. Met een paar karaffen rode huiswijn is het iedere keer weer compleet.

This level of poor service is difficult to overlook and dramatically impacted the overall impression of the establishment. The outdoor seating area further adds to the disappointment. It's unlit and insignificant, offering a subpar experience. Moreover, table service is not available outside; patrons must order drinks from the bar and carry them to their outdoor seats themselves. This setup feels neglectful and fails to create an inviting outdoor atmosphere. The stark contrast between the helpful bartenders and the negligent waiter points to serious inconsistencies in Cafe Bern's service standards. This disparity, combined with the poorly managed outdoor area, creates a confusing experience for diners. In conclusion, Cafe Bern is a disappointing option in Amsterdam's dining scene. While the bartenders do their best to salvage the experience, the rude and ineffective service from the older waiter, combined with unmemorable food and a neglected outdoor area, makes it hard to recommend. There are likely numerous better options available in Amsterdam for a pleasant dining experience. Unless significant improvements are made, particularly in service consistency and outdoor amenities, Cafe Bern is probably best avoided.

Este lugar es genial llegamos después de las 9 : 30 PM y tenía fondue de queso y Berna que estaba delicioso. El servicio fue genial el propietario le dio a mi marido una muestra de cerveza y explicó cómo el restaurante se le ocurrió el famoso plato de carne de Berna de Suiza. Gran ambiente local y bebidas y cenas nocturnas.

I was excited to try the fondue at this restaurant, but unfortunately, I never made it to the ordering part. While most of the staff were incredibly polite and welcoming, there was one older staff member who was quite rude, which dampened the experience. It's disappointing when one person's attitude overshadows the efforts of the rest of the team!

This was an experience, not just a meal. The menu is in Dutch but we came by recommendation with an idea of what we wanted. The staff talked us through the menu and we got our fondue and entrecôte in pesto. It cooked on the burners in a well in the table in front of us as we eagerly waited. A must for anyone passing through or living here.

Love this place for fantastic cheese and steak fondue...not together as thats too much food but they are good in their own right. Groen sla (green salad) has a very tangy vinaigrette which i also like a lot. Enjoy! It can get full so while you can get seats at the bar first come first serve, I recommend reservations

Really amazing and unique little fondu place

Very bad service. Dinner was a piece of meat and baguette for €23. They dare to charge €6 for a scoop of herb butter. So this was once and never again.

Food was fine and well priced, staff a bit inexperienced but friendly and the interior/atmosphere was a bit special. But that's probably part of the concept. Not my type of tent but definitely worth a try.

They recommended this place to us and they were not wrong.....with beautiful views of the canal, and the cheese fondiu was simply BRILLIANT, the bread was freshly made and tasted like bread. The salads that accompanied the starter were very fresh. The chocolate mouse dessert of very good quality. In short, cheese fondiu for 3 people, salads, 500ml house wine, chocolate mouse and 3 coffees all for €87. Spectacular May 2024.
