Café Caron in Oude Pijp

Not sure why this restaurant has such a good rating, so I’m sharing our experience dining there: - the food is decent, the only dish we really disliked was the black-legged chicken (zwartpootkip). I wish the waiter would have told us it is a sous-vide chicken breast, otherwise we would have never gotten it. It gives the chicken a spongy texture which we found not appealing. The menu doesn’t include any info about which part of the chicken is served and how it is prepared. - when we expressed our dislike of this dish, our waiter then proceeded to ignore us for the rest of the evening. His overall attitude was “I’m a hot-shot working at a hot-shot place” which was slightly off putting to us. - we ordered one bottle of sparkling water, and as we were about to finish it, the staff grabbed it away and immediately gave us a new one without asking if we wanted a second bottle. And of course both bottles were on the bill! A simple “Would you like another bottle of water?” would have been enough but the wait stuff never asked. Overall it wasn’t a bad dinner, but we’ve had much better French food elsewhere.

I've been to many excellent restaurants, but Café Caron was one of the best I've ever experienced. The greeting, the choice of table, the service, the selection of dishes, the food itself, and the accompanying wine were all outstanding!

Walking into café caron you already know that it is going to good, the only question you should be asking you: how good will it be? Well let me answer, amazing, 10/10, a true chefs kiss. The interior is perfect, with amazing light coming in, simple but elegant furniture and an open kitchen you're already amazed. The servers are trained, and show true hospitality each person giving service with their own persona. and then when the food comes out, you will start smiling uncontrollably, amazing dishes, loads of flavor and creative. there is something from everybody. There are many restaurants that try to reach this level, however you actually achieved it. effortlessly

Cozy terrace with not the youngest generation of customers. Very friendly service; during the heatwave, my glass of white wine was accompanied by a bottle of refreshing sparkling water!

Amazing place, outdoor seating feels like a sitting in a garden. We love their sole fish main dish and the poached egg entree . Superb wine quality.

Despite the heat, we got a lovely spot on the terrace, and the ladies who served us were, in a word, amazing: skilled, quick, friendly, and highly knowledgeable. I would even call it un-Amsterdam-like good, because it really stands out these days when things are done so finely and professionally. For example: the wine wasn't quite at the right temperature, but we received it quickly with our main course, and then it was chilled lightning-fast so that we received everything on time. The food was delicious as usual, the wine list top-notch, and the evening worth repeating. Compliments!

Delicious food, lovely wines and fine service

If all the restaurants in Amsterdam are as good Café Caron, then the city has too few visitors. But if, what is more likely, Café Caron is a bit of a secret, I feel conflicted rating it so highly. Dinner was nothing sort of extraordinarily delicious, and al fresco dining on (Vive la) Frans Halsstreet a delight. Servers were ubiquitous, friendly, efficient and effective. If my asparagus was maybe a tad too al dente, the preceding boudin in a potato "mille feuille" was to die for and my companions couldn't rave enough about the chicken breast. All of this accompanied by a fresh, flinty-fruity white from the Haute Savoy, selected from a broad selection of European wines. A perfect spot to celebrate friendship old and new, and indulge in deliciousness all around.

Amazing restaurant. Everything was perfect, from the menu and the dishes we had (asparagus!!) to especially the friendliness of the staff, particularly Gisele. She is a real star and incredibly nice. This is a top-notch restaurant with very reasonable prices.

What an experience!! After stumbling upon Café Caron by chance, we decided to dine here after all. Excellent service and delicious food! Good wines and, ultimately, a good pairing with dessert. Was pleasantly surprised that Chef Caron himself had time for a photo opportunity and a fitting chat. I will definitely be back!!

A mistake in the reservation resulted in a great deal of rigidity from the staff. Thinking in terms of possibilities and solutions was not on the agenda; it is a shame. Are customer values ​​subordinate to this? The food was okay, but not sufficient to live up to the pretentious image.

A highlight meal of our trip! We sat at the bar (recommend), and our server David was very friendly and gave great recommendations. The atmosphere is beautiful, warm lighting, lots of candles. Good energy, not too loud or too quiet. Seemed to be filled with a lot (if not mostly) locals. Food was delicious and super fresh. I hear the menu changes often, but we loved the oysters, the leek soup, the hake fish, and the chocolate mousse.

The food wasn't special, even though it has the vibe of an above-average good eatery that you pay for. It didn't really impress me. Otherwise, the service was good and the atmosphere was good, despite a noisy group of drunk guys.

We had the pleasure of joining last minute the "Ode to Bretagne" themed evening. This was great evening, with live music, the "gezellige" atmosphere created by both chefs and their staff and the amazing food. Everything was well prepared with unexpected twists and great tastes. It was another great evening!

Tonight was the first time at Café Caron. We were very pleasantly surprised. The service, atmosphere, and food were all superb. There were some really nice dishes on the menu that were delicious, every single one of them. The prices are on the high side, but we definitely thought it was worth it.

Service wasn’t at the standard expected. Drinks were empty for a while, no one asking for the next. No presentation of food, except at the end just for the cheese. The starters were just dropped on the table faster than a burger at BK. Wine, 100€ bottle average wine and no presentation, came late after starters were dropped, half way through the main, we got a wine cooler. The seat was under a vent that blew cold wind on the shoulder of my date with horrific cigarette smell. No one interested to know if we had a good time or if the food was good. Chef menu was good but suspecting food poisoning as I ended puking once back home. Never happens.

Came here for an early dinner. The staff was very friendly. The food was excellent. We had the à la cart menu, staring with the mackerel riet, which creamy and flavourful. Followed this with the crab and poached egg appetizer. Can’t decide which of the two was the best - both were excellent and so very different. Picked the rabbit and Hake for mains. Again- both were delicious and well prepared. Finished with the chocolate mousse - which I only wish there was more of. Overall a fantastic dining experience.

Cafe Caron was a recommendation by a family member, and it did not disappoint. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The staff was wonderful, the food was fantastic, and the presentation was amazing. The atmosphere was very laid back, but also very professional. The restaurant was full of groups of many sizes but the noise level was certainly not distracting.

I walked in here completely new. Unexpectedly. Knowing nothing about the French bistro. I have truly never had such delicious rabbit with the combination of eel sauce. I have no words for it. It was sublime. Also a beautiful starter of North Sea crab. The fried onions really finished it off. Service was also really top-notch. Very nice cozy atmosphere. Excellent service.

I booked this restaurant for my partner birthday, but it was a disaster from start to finish. If you don’t speak Dutch, expect to be treated differently. We were ignored upon arrival while groups who arrived after us were served immediately. Everyone received bread and butter except our table. The service was also dangerous; I have been a pescatarian for 16 years, yet they served me chicken as a "mistake." To top it off, they failed to deduct my €50 booking deposit from the final bill. Between the blatant cold-shouldering and the total lack of attention to detail, I would never recommend this place.

I had dinner at Café Caron last Monday evening. The food was truly excellent. Beautiful ingredients, refined flavors, and everything was perfect on the plate. You could tell the kitchen knows what it's doing. The service was friendly and welcoming, but sometimes lacked a bit of sharpness and proactiveness. It felt a bit reactive here and there, rather than truly attentive. The restaurant wasn't full, which might be understandable on a Monday, but it didn't really contribute to the atmosphere. The experience might be even better on a busier evening. All in all, it's definitely a place where you can eat well, with room to enhance the overall experience.

Café Caron exceeded our expectations! I was genuinely surprised by the value for money. These days, you easily pay around €50 per person for a relatively basic restaurant, but here we paid about the same, including drinks, for a truly excellent dinner. That feels almost miraculous these days. The food was truly excellent: flavorful, well-prepared, and with clear attention to detail. But what truly made the evening special for us was the service. We were served by Ties, and he definitely deserves a special mention. Incredibly attentive, relaxed, sharp in his timing, and very helpful in choosing the wine. Just the right balance between professional and personal. Thanks to the service and the final price, we left with a big smile. I give them a solid 10 out of 10!

Usually, we really enjoy dining here. Unfortunately, last night's experience left us feeling deeply disappointed. Firstly, we were served a lukewarm lobster bisque as a starter, but no bread. When we asked about the bread, we were told it is only served when asked for. However, we have been many times before, are always served bread and also, every other table was served bread unprompted. Mistakes happen, there is no need to lie to customers. But the biggest disappointment was the main course, an Asian inspired chicken breast, because the preparation was very poor. I am not a fan of poached chicken to begin with, but at least in Asian cuisine, chicken is tender and flavourful. The chicken we were served was hard and it was covered in a generic, thick, brown sauce. It was served alongside a vegetarian spring roll. Not what you would expect at a French bistro. I am sure things will improve with the next change of the menu, but yesterday's meal has left us reluctant to come back again anytime soon.

Great spot with very good food and a solid wine selection. The service is very Dutch in the best way efficient, friendly, and relaxed. That said, the dishes aren’t always fully explained, which might matter if you like more detail. The ambiance and atmosphere are warm and inviting, making it a lovely place to spend the evening. Would definitely come back.

The only slight drawback: we were charged for a bottle of water that we neither ordered nor drank. A shame about that detail, because everything else was impeccable.

Loved this place. A friend booked a table for us on a Sunday evening. Prior to the invitation, never heard of the place and was unsure of what to expect.. Absolutely loved it! Adorable corner restaurant. Cozy decor, from lighting to place settings. Excellent service. All the staff were friendly and jovial. It really elevated the experience. Makes it more personal, more homey. Great wine menu, with a price point for every budget. And the dishes were outstanding in both preparation and presentation. Delicious. My husband and I found Cafe Caron while walking the streets of Amsterdam on a recent holiday trip, and were fortunate enough to be seated at the bar without reservation on a day where they seemed to be otherwise fully booked. We had their three-course tasting menu, with wine pairings suggested by our bartender/server. I started with some beautiful French oysters accompanied by some champagne. I had the poached egg with the mushroom sauce as the appetizer, the pork starter, and the profiteroles for dessert. I could write a long, detailed review of the deliciousness of each dish and the wine pairings, but let me just get to the point: This is Michelin star quality food and wonderfully attentive service, all in a casual atmosphere tucked away in a residential neighborhood in Amsterdam. What most impressed? The fact that everyone in the kitchen, including the chef, was under 30. This team reflected a maturity and nuance to their food well beyond their years. This is a must-do dining experience.

This restaurant is located in a very lively, youthful neighborhood, which already gives it a great vibe. The interior is cozy, the atmosphere is warm, and the crowd is stylish and friendly. The staff was very attentive and welcoming. When it comes to the food, I personally lean more toward traditional cuisine, so this wasn’t exactly my usual style. The dishes here are more modern and experimental, with a creative twist — so if you’re expecting something classic like mashed potatoes & a steak or simple sides, this isn’t quite that kind of place. That said, the quality was very good, everything was tasty and well prepared, and if you enjoy creative cuisine, I think you’ll love it. Even for someone with more traditional taste like me, it was a pleasant and great evening overall.

Absolutely amazing dinner in Amsterdam. My wife has Celiac disease and all her food needs to be gluten free. We informed the restaurant ahead of time and they attended to every detail - information about gluten free options, a portion of gluten free bread, and all without having to remind them. Not to mention that the food was delicious, and the wait staff was fantastic. A must visit location for sure, and even moreso if you are gluten free. Be sure to reserve ahead of time!

The staff were very friendly and efficient. They all worked with finesses! I had ordered half dozen of oyster at first, it was so fresh and delicious and I couldn’t resist to order another half dozen. The main course Hamachi was very tasty. The Hake I ordered I could taste its freshness. I don’t eat fish skin normally but it’s very crispy so I wouldn’t mind eating it. I had no room for desert but I would love to try the other time. The wine I chose Bourgogne Viré-Clessé paired with the seafood dishes well! I’ll definitely come back.

It was wonderful again. On Sunday, the three of us had a delicious lunch and enjoyed a tasty three-course menu. All the dishes were very tasty, but the main courses were particularly delicious. We had two meat dishes, one Braambrugs Big, and one fish dish, Hake with peas and caponata. All this was accompanied by a lovely bottle of white wine (Limoux from 2020) and two separate glasses of red wine with the meat dish. To finish, we had one sweet and one cheese dish. We had a wonderful afternoon in a cozy restaurant, with plenty of light through the glass facade and a charming interior, and very pleasant service. Looking forward to our next visit.

Great French Cafe in a lovely neighbourhood of Amsterdam. Service was on point, fresh ingredients, meals were tasty. Beef tartare was not the traditional flavours you would expect in the French version, but truly succulent.
