My favorite cafe, the terrace, is always pleasantly busy, but I usually manage to find a table quickly. The service is always good and very friendly; they always dress smartly. Where else do you see that? Recently, two beers spilled (our fault), and they immediately gave us new ones without me having to pay. That's fantastic!

Favorite!! Stopped in for a quick drink, ended up enjoying this cozy corner for several hours people watching and talking. Staff were lovely, drinks were delicious. Returned again the next night for a nightcap.

I went to have a coffee with my best friend to catch up, and the atmosphere was super nice. The waiter was super nice. I normally don't get Irish coffee here because I haven't found a place where it's well prepared, but here it was really nice!

Enjoyed a beer for €14.00, asked if nuts were included, and the bowl of peanuts...€7.00!!!! The size of a cup...ha,ha!!! The staff was very friendly, except for one club member.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys drinking coffee with a wonderful view of a square. It could be added to your Amsterdam travel list. The artistic atmosphere of the space is wonderful, and they greet customers with great interest.

The location is nice on the corner of the square, the staff is friendly, there are not many alternatives in terms of food, but there are various drinks.

It's in a great location, the snacks are delicious, and the beer is good. We didn't encounter any negative attitudes from the staff.

Disrespectfully high prices. A 0.2l Coke costs €4!!! Unfriendly policies. If four people are seated, everyone has to order something, otherwise one person has to leave the café alone. And the staff are unfriendly, who don't make any effort and don't even want to come across as friendly. Overall, a rip-off and very unpleasant, unfortunately. 🤷‍♂️

I didn’t get to try the food at Café de Zwart, but the atmosphere was really nice — perfect for sitting outside and enjoying a drink. It’s in a great location, easy to find and lovely to watch the city go by. The service was good and fast, which made the experience even better. Definitely a place I’d come back to!

I just stopped by for a coffee break. The presentation and taste of the coffee were good. I sat outside; there were classic French-style chairs all facing one direction. The atmosphere inside was more pleasant. It felt more like a boutique bar than a coffee shop. People who seemed to know each other were sitting at the bar and chatting. The restroom was very, very small. I didn’t see a toilet suitable for people with disabilities — maybe there is one, but I’m not sure. It might be a nicer spot to visit in the evening for a beer. Thanks to the girl who served us! I just stopped by for a coffee break. The presentation and taste of the coffee were good. I sat outside; there were classic French-style chairs all facing the same direction. The atmosphere inside was more pleasant. It looked more like a boutique bar than a coffee shop. Sit here more often because of the really nice service, everyone who works here is always nice and fun. I definitely recommend sitting here because besides the nice atmosphere the staff is really super super top

A very warm welcome from a kind waitress who served us at 11 p.m., whereas in other establishments the welcome is really unpleasant, especially at this time.

I thought it was very antisocial that they immediately brought the bill after the first drink. It took just under 5 minutes.

Nice traditional cafe and pub in central Amsterdam. Good for people watching and taking a break from the busy streets of Amsterdam. Clean restrooms. Extensive drink menu and some snacks available as well.

Lekker biertje en wijntje gedronken op dit gezellige terras aan het Spui. Prima sfeer en n uitstekende ober (man met baard). Zo hoort n ober/kelner te zijn. Top Binnen ook leuke en gezellig cafe.

The cappuccino wasn't great. They also wanted to charge us 20 euros for 2 toasts that we didn't order.

Below average coffee, lot of extra things on the bill we did not order.

I ended up here by chance, received a warm welcome and when they heard it was my birthday I also got a nice piece of apple pie.

As the Hope is always full, everyone falls back on De Zwart...the only downside is the service which is long. Otherwise the place is super pleasant and their little terrace too. Be careful, the café closes very early (I think it’s 6 p.m.). Super good mulled wine and aperitif board to try!

Our favorite take-a-break place .... perfect for a great beer and people watching. The place is very small and cozy. Very Amsterdam. Also known as 'the writer's bar' for all the famous writers that stop by. They do not serve much food...so if you need to eat, go some place else first... Then come here!.... The Apple tart (pie) with coffee is wonderful.

Very unfriendly and overcharged for water

I visited today with my autistic kid. We took a table and my kid went to the toilets. I was 2-3 meters from him when I turned back and saw the barman shouting at my kid and stretching across the bar to push him away from the toilet door. I intervened to stop him and explain that he doesn't understand English and that the barman's attitude is unacceptable. We never got any excuses. On the contrary, the barman had the nerve to tell me I should have taken care of my kid when I was actually close to the scene and intervened right away. Awful attitude. I hope that the other clients could see and judge for themselves. The one star is for the service because we never got to order anything, we left immediately. Definitely don't recommend and will not return.

Geweldige kroeg, ook fijn dat als je uit het oosten komt dat er ergens Grolsch uit de tap komt vallen. Veder goed bar personeel dus de volgende keer als ik in Amsterdam ben weet ik waar ik mij meld.

Somehow we always end up here when we go to Amsterdam. A really nice place to relax with a beer or tasty cocktail. Generally a slightly older audience, which is totally fine with us. Service good.

I didn't even stop, when I was passing by the waitress immediately said it wasn't a place to be, I didn't even go in.

French style cafe, nice to sit. A little overpriced. Outrageous experience with the food: we ordered a portion of bitterballen for 9€ (expensive for only 6). We then watched as the waiter went next door to the kebab shop, came back with a paper bag, served its contents onto a plate, which he then served to us! If we wanted to go to a kebab shop we would have! Absolutely terrible. Based on this I advise that you do not go.

Could be a great spot for people watching with coffee, beer or snacks, but service is not great. We had to ask for more drinks and we were sitting inside by the bar...a little more attentiveness to customers would really make it a great spot

Today, we witnessed a server (white, tall, curly hair) yell incredibly discriminatory slurs to an Asian family. They sat down for drinks and had fish from down the street with them. The server came and immediatly began snapping his fingers at them and trying to rush them out. After this, he shouted discriminatory slurs at them not once but twice. A table of men next to them even endorsed the behavior of the server. The server should be fired. Never going here again

very rude very unpolite personnel

there is a super rude waiter/owner there! Going in for a hot tea and a soda and the glasses they used were super dirty - one has a lot of the stains and the other one has lipstick on it from the last customer. We asked for a straw and he was so rude and we got so annoyed and asked for the bill. The waiter then just kicked us out and said if you are not happy just go… what a terrible service! If you don’t wanna do business just shut it down!

Terrible experience, served expired wine and when I asked to exchange it they still charged me for the wine I didn't drink. Never going back again.

Yesterday, January 12, I sat at the bar for some drinks, the 2 employees who were working during the day made it pleasant. When I wanted to pay the senior who had just started, something went wrong. Without any reason (we had not yet spoken to each other) I was verbally abused by this man because we wanted to pay separately. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with paying for someone to be so out of line? After that I was very smart and got a bar ban and I had to leave the pub immediately. We were already planning to do that anyway, and we wanted to take a de-escalating approach. That's a good thing because your colleague was still in the middle of his angry outburst. If you hate your job so much, go do something else with your life. Please don't serve people anymore. I would be ashamed if you continued to work in the catering industry. The saddest catering experience ever in Amsterdam and I'm going to let everyone know. Unfortunately I cannot give 0 star reviews, as they are well deserved.

Used to be a regular visitor to this cafe but not anymore after today's treatment. Had a great time for half the afternoon until a Theo Hiddema look-alike suddenly appeared behind the bar. When paying, he misunderstood something regarding the amount to be paid and somehow could not let go of this, after which he became extremely angry, shouted at us and then shouted at us to 'fuck off'. With love we are indeed turned away because you don't want to be served by such a person. Disappointing.

Just didn’t want to serve one of our group who asked for Tea (which was on the menu). One more if the group asked for Fanta - may as well have asked for bleach with the reaction received. We drank the drinks we were allowed to have. Paid and left .

Nice little terrace next to the alley where they sell the famous chocolate cake. The result: a lot of hustle and bustle.....

We stopped in to try the local gin, Jenever. We also ordered a beer and some bitterballen. The bartender, (owner?), told us 20 minutes for the bitterballen. I told them that's fine, more time to drink. A guy comes in to use the bathroom and is asked for a shower or a pee? Meh, I guess he thinks he's funny. 45 minutes later, still no bitterballen. Asked for my bill. Started getting the run around re: bitterballen. "Oh he's a lazy old man, it takes time". "Do you still want them?" Apparently they're hard of hearing. The old clown told me to, and I quote, "Be quiet". Apparently he didn't want everyone else to know how bad the service is. The clown then asks me, "Are you on vacation?" I told him that he told me to be quiet. He looked like he wanted to take a swing at me. That would have been rich! We paid and left. Don't order food, just drinks.

Terrible service!!! We would love to grab some drinks and food. The barman was so terrible!!! Bad attitude and bad temper!!! Worst of the world!!! Because we don’t oder enough or our drinks and food are too cheap. We were waiting for our drinks and we wanted to order more and he came to us and blamed us that we were sitting here already 30 mins and we didn’t order anything. We are sitting here only 10 mins, sir!!!Are you stupid??? We are ordering a drink and meatballs.. Apparently he wasn’t happy about us. OMG!!! He has to learn sth!!! I highly DON’T recommend this terrible place!!! There’s so many nice places that you can visit!!!

My favorite cafe in Amsterdam. Always a seat available outside. Great people watching. And what I love most is that there are locals and regulars who are staples here. Great vibe and good coffee. The waitress, Vera, is as good of any hospitality worker in the city of Amsterdam. Absolutely love this place!

Nice atmosphere, feels like you are in dutch place, nice bar with good service i think. It’s one of the older cafes in Amsterdam i would recommend visiting. Apple pie was frozen though, but it’s a bar….have a drink :)
