Café Krom in Grachtengordel-Zuid

This cafe seems to be a victim of its own good location in a bustling, multicultural city. If Dutch is not your first language avoid coming here, as the bartender was hostile and antagonistic. Life is only as miserable as you make it, and it appears that man is living in his own personal hell.

One of the most rude, terrible services I have ever experienced in Amsterdam. This sort of people should never work at a bar. Will never recommend this place to anyone

As close as possible you could get to feeling like you're in a David Hopper painting... if David Hopper was Dutch... and based in Amsterdam. Which he isn't. But somehow it makes me feel that way. Sitting alone at the smoothly carved wooden bar, absorbing the atmosphere... decades of history oozes from details such as the old dukebox, the Decco lighting, the old bar taps... So I ordered my first drink ( Pilsner Urqell ) and enjoyed it. I honestly don't care but the service because it's such a nice bar... but, on the 3 times I've been recently, it was not great. I mean... the bar man has the air of irritation at your very existence... I hope that isn't really the case, but that's the feeling. I was sitting at the bar and it was barely that busy. I studied the Jenever menu for ages and was planning on buying one. With my empty beer on the bar, clearly ready for my next drink... I COULD not get his attention. He was either washing glasses, or serving everyone else. After 20 mins, I decided I would just leave. But I needed to pay. This took another 15 mins of trying to get his attention. I had to demand that I pay else I'd still be there now 3 days later! I speak Dutch. Maybe they don't like non Dutch speaking Dutch.

A lovely little place with knowledgeable staff and a wide selection of beers. It's now one of the most expensive bars in the city, though; a Karmeliet is almost 7 euros, so it could be a bit more affordable.

I asked for a Grand Marnier coffee and got a black coffee with a dash of Grand Marnier. The coffee was cold because of the cold dishes. Apparently, I should have said I wanted an Irish coffee with Grand Marnier. It cost €10.00. La Chouffe 0.25 liter glass instead of 0.33 liter €6.40. Typical Amsterdam shrinkflation. We, as Amsterdammers, won't be going here again. The service was friendly, though, hence the 1*.

What a grumpy woman behind the bar. No hello or anything when you walked in. After 10 minutes, I went to the bar myself to order. The woman then felt the need to complain to other guests about what we wanted, and then complain to us about it when she put it down. Maybe the woman was confused, but I'm not paying for your opinion, I'm paying for my drink.

I went here briefly last night, and the bartender said she'd come back, but she never showed up; it was way too busy with people inside and a regular customer. After about 25 minutes on the patio, we gave up. The atmosphere was fine, not too crowded, but the service wasn't.

Sitting for 20 minutes, but nobody come to Oscars and it was like somehow ignoring at the end we left

Just drank. A classic brown café with uniformed bartenders. Always a pleasant experience, thanks in part to the excellent service.

A good place to have a beer on a quiet street. It has a terrace and a record player. They have a pet cat.

I can validate the one star reviews for this miserable place. If you are an unapproachable and disgruntled type then you shouldn't be working behind a bar. Even the cat agreed. Won't be going back. I walked up to the Wildeman cafe afterwards where I was greeted with a big smile and a hello.

I found this place through google recommendations. Very disappointing. Staff is super rude and I believe quite racist to anyone from outside the country and can’t speak their language despite the fact that they earn a lot of money from tourists. I was very kind and nice but the attitude was just out of order.

Very rude, unprofessional and racist staff. We went to this cafe and sat down for coffee with my friend. While we were seated, the waiter (gray haired man) completely ignored us. When we asked to order he said "no you can't". I felt like he behaved this way because we were foreigners. Very inappropriate and shocking. I see that there are many other reviews with similar experiences. Avoid this place at all costs.

A very charming place with a lovely lady waiter and a cosy atmosphere. The cat is the highlight of the visit, but the pastries were delicious as well!

Service is decentish, they have a cat which is a plus. However the owners/workers are very xenophobic and make it know. When I asked for a drink recommendation they refused which is the first time somebody has actually refused to recommend me a drink. If your Dutch, go ahead enjoy your time and the cat. However if not avoid it like the plague.

Give 10% tip, but bartender secretly charges 3 euros extra; little scammer!

Dutch Below: I had a disappointing experience at this cafe recently. I was there with my one-year-old baby at around 15:30, as I often am, and I usually sit at the bar because it's an excellent way for him to see and experience more of his surroundings, which is important at his age. At one point, I sat my baby on the bar so he could have a better view. It's important to note that my baby was quiet and not bothering anyone. The bartender approached me and asked me not to do this, which I understand might be against their rules. However, how he addressed the situation was utterly unprofessional and unnecessarily rude. He said (paraphrasing): "Please do not sit your baby on top of the bar. I won't say anything if he sits at the bar—it's your choice on how to educate him—but sitting on top of the bar is unacceptable. Maybe in your culture, this is fine, but here it's not okay." I find it completely unacceptable for a stranger to comment on how I educate my baby or make assumptions about my culture. This statement felt not only condescending but also carried a clear undertone of racism. The tone of his delivery was disrespectful, and I firmly believed the interaction would have been different had I spoken Dutch. I used to come to this café frequently and enjoyed it, but after this experience, I will not return. I hope the management can address how their staff handles such situations in the future. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their background or language. I recently had a disappointing experience at this cafe. Very nice coffee in its own juice, unfortunately the staff is quite unpleasant, especially with foreigners and children.

A real Amsterdam café with many Amsterdam residents. Convivial and what I find an advantage is no music in the background. And oh yes, friendly staff too.

This is a great place to come for a drink (before or after your visit to Concerto just up the road). Authentic Amsterdam pub experience, plus cat. Re negative reviews - if you want a shandy, or vodka shots, you've come to the wrong place.

Some negative review’s recently which surprises me. I have always had a good experience here as a traveller, both solo and in a group. Traditional brown bar, full of locals. Everyone was very friendly and my partner was offered the window seat by one of the local regulars - good time had by all.

Hardcore old fashioned. Refreshing. There was an American lady sitting at the bar (Mrs. A from the 1 star review:-))))) who opened her laptop. After which the innkeeper asked her to put it away immediately: No laptops in the café, and certainly not at the bar. When she didn't do so immediately, he gave another warning. Then she started replying and ranting at him extensively, threatening that she would write a bad review. The bartender took away her coffee and urged her to leave the building immediately. With the words “that really doesn't matter at all”. Really delicious. And look: you get 5 stars for brightness and monitoring the Amsterdam café in general. Kudos!!!

Pleasant place. We came here because all of Amsterdam has Czech beer on tap here, but if I had known that there was also a cat here, we would have come sooner.

It is not a place for families with children. They told us to leave because my 1-year-old daughter was crying, although I went outside so as not to disturb them. very unpleasant. They didn't have the food they offer on the menu either.

Had my fair share of travelling and I've never come across such a wonderful place. I don't know why everyone is saying that they do not accept foreigners. I have never experienced any issues. Only wonderful atmosphere, food and maybe the best beer menu ever crafted. Be sure to check it out after a long day. 10/10

Fuimos a almorzar a Krom café / bar. No hay mucha elección, así que hicimos un par de preguntas sobre nuestras opciones. El viejo gruñón dijo: "Necesito tu pedido de bebidas primero. " Dije que pediremos bebidas cuando respondas a nuestras preguntas sobre la comida si decidimos quedarnos. Pedimos tostis. Mi jamón y queso y mi amigo salami y queso y cafés. Mi amiga llegó sin el queso pero decidió que no valía la pena quejarse con el hombre gruñón. Cuando fuimos a pagar se negó a dejarnos pagar por separado a pesar de que habíamos pedido por separado. Dijo que había pedido por separado, pero los he reunido, así que arrancó la nota más grande de la mano de mis amigos, aceptando el pago de ambos. Evita este café si quieres un servicio agradable. No volveremos.

I have been coming from abroad to this café for 20 years to sit for a coffee in the afternoon and watch Amsterdam go by out the window. You won’t find a nicer spot to do that and there is almost always a seat available at one of their octagonal tables. Enjoy your visit there and be sure to say hello for me to the cat on the bar.

We were looked away with a small group. Unsympathetic and unfair. Too bad and no more.

I was a regular guests here. Last time I went, it was boiling hot inside and the terrace was on the sun and I needed to cool off, and so I apologized and left. The owner complained and murmured “Italians… typical”. I work approximately 100 m from there and used to go MANY times a month.

Serveerster Anke was absoluut niet vriendelijk, citroenstamper viel tijdens uitserveren op de grond ( buiten) en werd gewoon rucksichloos terug in glas gemieterd. Moest daarna 3 keer vragen om af te kunnen rekenen. Blijkbaar had Anke haar dag niet. Gastvrijheid stond niet op de kaart. Gezellig hoor, in Amsterdam.

The meatballs are locally made as is the apple tart. Both are fantastic. We returned and had the meatballs again. The staff are courteous and friendly. It is a local cafe and we received a very warm welcome on both occasions.

Just happened to discover this hidden, gem. You get welcomed by a lovely cat, dont be afraid to pet him, hes very friendly. The cafe itself is very cozy and great if you would like to have a drink or coffee.

I went to this cafe with my sister after the snack, the service was terrible, my fuzztea was spilled all over my sleeve, not a single apology or anyone who came to clean it up. Everything seemed normal even though I was soaked But hey at least we'll remember it RT

Hello Everyone, Please stay away from this place and the owner. He is extremely rude and look at foreigners and expats with a strange eye. I wouldn’t go into the details but it’s felt like I was in a movie because rude people like him to that extent don’t exist. There is always a way to treat people and put your message across but this is beyond imagination. If you are a tourist or an expat in Amsterdam- Stay away!!!!!!

I would give a negative star if that was possible. The owner - hates expats/foreigners. You would walk in and he would ignore you. I would not like to share the details of what even happened but he is rude and awful. Only go in if the world is collapsing and that’s the last place to go in. I don’t post a lot of reviews because I’m quite aware that there are all sorts of human beings around us but this is extremely important that Expats and foreigners don’t go in.

Spontaneously inside. Nice cafe. Old-fashioned tomato soup and a nostalgic, straightforward sandwich for a very reasonable price. The atmosphere there is great. Recommended instead of all those fri... tents.

This cafe reflects the soul of Amsterdam: the Dutch urban soul. It is old-fashioned, and faithful to its principles as a bar--by which I mean that the service is correct but not obsequious; there are no distracting frills and fripperies and effete cocktails, only proper, classic drinks; and the decor is pleasing, understated and fundamentally unchanged from the time of the bar's establishment. The bartenders are dignified and proud professionals: you must wait your turn before they serve you, and they will not be distracted by frantic hand-signals and impatient beckoning. But when they get to you, they will help you kindly and knowledgeably through the choices they have on tap and in bottle: Not sure what kind of beer you want? Hans, a tall, sturdy man with a mop of white hair, will talk you through your options. Not certain which genever to drink? Ask Anke, a lanky lady who looks like Charlotte Rampling and speaks beautiful English. All in all, a classic bar for a quiet, unhurried, unfussy, but very satisfying drink. This is not a tourist trip. So go there for sure, but go there on ITS OWN terms.

Onvriendelijk personeel. Ik snap de frustratie als het buiten druk is. Maar omdat ik al hoorde dat er mensen afgeblaft werden voor het verzoek om (tegen betaling) de toilet te gebruiken, bestelde ik eerst een biertje. Klein glas en duurder dan op de menukaart buiten stond, 3.30 ipv 3.10, maar oké. Toen ik daarna echter vroeg of ik gebruik mocht maken van de toilet, daar die op slot leek, kreeg ik dezelfde attitude als de mensen die zonder consumptie binnen gelopen waren. Bleek dat er iemand op de toilet zat die er uitzonderlijk lang over deed in plaats van dat de faciliteiten op slot waren tegen bezoekers van buiten. Kan gebeuren, geen probleem. Maar de snauw die ik van de barman kreeg na mijn vriendelijk verzoek kan ik alsnog niet vergeten. Zo bitter. Twee sterren omdat het interieur wel heel mooi is. Schattig barretje waarschijnlijk als je er op een rustig moment komt.

What a great wee bar this was. Lovely authentic original 1920’s decor and an antique fully operational juke box. Drinks were reasonable and great ambience. Highly recommend.

Extremely helpful staff and a fun place to be. My kid got hurt and two of the staff members stayed with him even after closing time, until I gpt there to pick him. They also parked his bike inside as it couldn't be taken home. Kudos and a big Thank you to the staff members for their kindness. My kid had an amazing time with his friends (before he got hurt).
