A couple of weeks ago, my friend and I had a very unpleasant experience at De Flater. The so called “owner,” someone named Teehs (or something like that), accused us of using drugs in the bathroom. This was completely untrue, we never use drugs. The reality was that I was simply helping my friend clean his pants after someone had vomited on him earlier that night. Instead of listening, the “owner” said, “This is my place, you need to leave,” and sent us outside. The security guard wasn’t very understanding either. Fortunately, there was a kind bartender outside who did listen to our story. He understood what really happened, saw that we hadn’t used any drugs, apologized for his colleague’s behavior, and even offered us a beer. Thanks to that bartender’s kindness, we could end the night on a somewhat better note. Still, I would only consider coming back here if this so-called owner is not around.

This is the best spot in Utrecht if you like fun, alternative people. You'll see lots of attractive people, but at the same time, there's a very safe atmosphere. Every Monday, there's a top-notch security guard named Rohan. He always has the best intentions; he's friendly and incredibly kind to women. (The best security I've ever encountered.) The staff, Josephine, Mathijs, and Marek, are also top-notch. Despite the crowds, they always try to maintain a good atmosphere and protect the security guards. This is one of the many reasons I come back here again and again. It's a wonderful cultural experience in Utrecht. I highly recommend it, especially on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Unfortunately a very unfriendly and annoying guard who ruined my impression of this place in one go.

If you are not young enough no one is getting the care of you, you need to go INTO the bar just to ask for a beer. They were partying more than working ( I work in Horeca, I know )

Very dirty and beer is bad quality.

It was only Monday! But we have already come across the winner of the week! Wouter, what a great guy! Friendly staff, good service, nice location and a nice range of beer. Great tent! Will definitely come more often :)

Haven't been in a month because I'm traveling in Mexico. Unfortunately, no Mexican Flater has been found yet, there is simply no place like the flat ❤️

This was such a shame... my girlfriend and I were not allowed in by the security guard (Younes). He barely looked at us; was on his phone and smoking [weed], but according to him what we had in our hands was too dangerous, see photos (just had a painting course). After our explanation he still didn't agree, because 'he didn't appreciate my tone' — I really tried my best to remain polite, because I really just wanted to dance, and there was really no reason to stop us from doing so except ' I'm the boss so I decide... his colleague (Peike) recognized my girlfriend and tried to get us in anyway, not only for the dancing but also probably for the proceeds at the bar - but there were only excuses from security, and apparently they have the final say. Even if their reason for refusing access seems to have been plucked out of thin air, and even if they say 'yes, just file a complaint. No, you don't like my name. And no, you can't take a picture of me either.' Then their will is law. Nice place. Good policy :) [but thanks Peike, you really did your best]

Unsociable people, non-existent service

8 bar staff who get in each other's way and/or hug. Nobody helps the customers, very special situation... Rarely seen such a travesty. Music was nice

Small place, very cozy, nice staff. Only thing I would wish is that the music would have been just a little lower since it was hard to have a conversation inside. Yet, I understand that the music was that loud since a lot of people were dancing and singing along..

The place is good, but outside you can't even stand because the security tells you off, it seems like a regime, not a bar.

Simply the best drinks/dancing place on the old canal!

A friend and I were profiled at the entrance by some drunk white dude in a power trip acting like the bouncer, but the wasn't. Said to us "Did I say you could enter?", then when my friend takes me inside because that dude was being rude and unreasonable, he goes behind the bar to tell the bartender to kick us out. Then the both of them started staring at us very intimidatingly and before I could react my friend grabbed my hand and we left bwfore they could do amything. There's some discrimination and racism going on in that place. Horrible, don't go there.

Denied entry as a minority by old black bouncer under the premise that the bar was “full.” Watched on the side as he let everyone after me in. When he noticed me standing there he made a snarky remark asking if I was “waiting for the bus.” Bouncer and establishment should be investigated for discrimination.

Went to the Flater last Wednesday. Beware of possible Scam! We sat at a table with chairs around it. My chair creaked, but it stayed in place. Think after 20 minutes a girl suddenly came crying loudly and said that it was her chair from the marketplace that she had just put down. The chair cost 80 euros and was now broken and we had to pay for it. A moral knight came threatening that we had to pay. Haven't seen a receipt, no one said before, that's not a chair from the café... Bar staff didn't do anything about it either because she turned out to be a regular guest as she was given keys afterwards to store her chair. And the hysterical crying session was suddenly over quickly after payment had been made to prevent worse. Better just not go to the Flater!

Went there for the first time 30 years ago. From that moment on, it was a favorite pub during my student days. Now have a beer every now and then. Atmosphere and choice of music have not changed. Delicious

Lovely spot to just have a drink in the sun while watching people passing by in front of the canal. A spot for regulars, it is jovial as you all sit really side by side on those tiny benches and can start a conversation. I just had to leave earlier than I wanted a few times as cigarette smoke bothers me and it can't be avoided.

Ik vond het wel fijn toen ik vroeg of de bar schoongemaakt mocht worden, de barvrouw dat ook deed. Er lag namelijk tering veel salmari op de bar en dat droop over mijn broek. De helft opgevangen met mijn mond, maar toch fijn dat de barvrouw even een doekje over de bar zwiepte.

Really disappointed and dissatisfied with the service and how people treat others in this bar. Regardless of who you are and where you are from respect should be universal.

Nice kroegje (bar), not big variety in drinks and the barmen are a bit slow. Still the atmosphere is good and in general you ll enjoy the night there. Unfortunately, it has the worst bouncer in the city. Everything depends on his mood swings. Legit at 2.50 he was telling a poor guy (not in bad shape or anything), "ga naar huis slappen" that tried to enter very politely. I suppose that is how you get your enjoyment in this job. May he lives the rest of his days in utter misery.

o I used to be a regular client and love this place, but tonight the guard was the rudest I have seen in my life. I was with another girl and we were very kind and as usually we wanted to have a drink. He told us they even though there is space inside for us, he does not want to get us in because maybe boyfriends will be interested in us and he does not want any trouble. We kept being kind and we told him that we do not even have boyfriends and it is just us, and he said ‘ you are not going to get in because I don’t want to’.. and then in front of us he let the people behind us come inside without a reservation. I would not accept any behavior like this and I used to suggest these place to people, BUT NEVER AGAIN!!! I am sorry that people like those think to have authority.

Top café, goeie service, snel geholpen, houd zich aan de maatregelen. Heeft breed aanbod van bieren waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met diversiteit in aanbod. Goeie muziek verder en klein terrasje. Personeel is altijd vrolijk en de stamgasten zijn ook altijd leuk.

bouncer was incredibly rude - we were not alloud in - ( Dutch people were ) asked for his name - he said call the police - we were simply wanting in for a beer - he said we laughters too much - so rude 29th February 2020 - worst experience in my 6 months of living in Utrecht
