Café Hegeraad in Jordaan

Came accross this Brown Cafe while wondering after a long day out. Great beer and cider, alongside apple pie and old cheese. Perfect way to relax after a long hot day

First went here at the end of our food walking tour that we had booked through Viator. The apple pie was delicious and perfect finish to the tour. We also had beer and cider which were great. We actually returned the next day with the intention of repeating the pie and beer experience but ended up getting there later than planned and full up of food so just had beer instead. A great find and a truly unique experience of a typical 'brown' cafe.

cute spot, especially in the summer. We sat outside, palleted by little by tree berries, and assaulted by gentle summer wind. Tostis were delicious, the tuna sandwich was perfect blend of spices and veggies, the home-made apple pie was tasty, would order more… and I’d skip watermelon spritzer. But overall all was yum.

We came for the famous Winkel, but we went to this place to avoid waiting in line and because others had recommended it. Their apple pie was delicious; we ordered one for two people, but we liked it so much we had a second one. It's a light dessert, especially the cream. The place feels much more authentic and local, and the service was very fast. We didn't try the other place, but if you're not doing a checklist tour, you should definitely try this one.

We went for the traditional Dutch apple pie, but ended up loving the carrot cake even more—definitely a must-try. both the coffee and beer were also great.

A nice bar-style place with a calm and relaxing seating area next to the cathedral, under the trees. The coffee was quite delicious. The apple cake was also tasty with the cream served on the side, but it is probably not something I would order again. Overall, it is a pleasant spot to rest and take a short break.

This was the first stop on our Eating Europe tour with Aileen our guide. We loved starting the morning with a fantastic apple pie and a beer. It was a tasty and memorable but to eat.

I wanted to try the apple pie here because it was frequently mentioned and recommended in Amsterdam vlogs. I also ordered a latte. The coffee was average, and the apple pie was quite average in taste. It can't compare to the apple cookies in Turkey. It's a waste of calories... You won't lose anything by not trying it. I went there on Sunday at lunchtime. It was quite crowded. The waiters initially refused my request to charge my phone, then inexplicably agreed. I didn't like the waiters' service, unfortunately. It seems they're tired of their popularity. Additionally, I made the mistake of using the restroom downstairs, and it wasn't clean at all. A place with an unclean restroom can't have a clean kitchen either.

A very famous café in Amsterdam. It is always busy, so it’s better to reserve a table in advance or be ready to wait a little. We had a delicious soup and an amazing apple tart. The atmosphere was wonderful — it felt like visiting friends at home.

It was the best apple pie I've ever had, warm and delicious, I'd love to go back just to eat it again. There was a more touristy, well-known cafe very close by, but I didn't understand why everyone waited for that one, this one was amazing too. The atmosphere is very charming, it takes you back to past eras. I really liked it, it's one of the things that stayed in my mind most from my Amsterdam trip.

We came here because Winkel 43 was full with a long wait. I ordered the Dutch apple pie, though most people seemed to be enjoying beer and snacks. The atmosphere is lovely—an old building with a classic bar feel, plus great seating both inside and outside, slightly removed from the busy street. The apple pie was a bit firm, but still flavorful, and the beer was quite good. I’d definitely come back for the beer.

A charming and welcoming café. The apple pie is to die for. The urinal in the wood paneling is hilarious. The service is adequate but lacks warmth. A smile, gentlemen! It's a pleasant place to have a coffee.

This cafe is my favorite! Nostalgic interior, lovely like it used to be. With no-nonsense coffee and delicious apple pie. A nice beer with bitterballen, a lovely terrace, and the staff work their socks off to get your order to you as fast as possible. Top place!

I came here with a pleasant afternoon mood for apple pie. The apple pie was okay, but the overall experience was unpleasant. I noticed the local owner wasn't very friendly towards Asians, even bordering on racist. You could feel the owner's attitude towards Asians was very different from their attitude towards other Westerners. If you're Asian and reading this review, I sincerely suggest you try another restaurant to avoid a bad experience. Thank you! ☺️

Very impolite service who have no idea about coffee. I have asked espresso macchiato and they brought flat white... the manager was aggressive . The pastries are also not fresh

We had apple pie and Irish coffee around 9 PM. It has an old and authentic atmosphere, and those who love old places should definitely visit. Sitting inside is especially recommended. The place a little further down the road is always recommended for apple pie, but this one definitely offers a better experience in terms of ambiance and taste. The other famous place has benefited from the blessings of Instagram and YouTube, but this one, being old and not bothered by the so-called communication tools of the new generation, is a place where Amsterdammers come to eat and drink, and some knowledgeable tourists appreciate it. It was a great experience, I hope to come again. Thank you for the wonderful service and hospitality, I wish you much success.

Super authentic place! We were there three years ago and came back this year specifically... and it's still exactly the same, as if time had stood still. It's probably the same as it was 30 or 50 years ago. A truly historic place, one of those that are becoming rarer these days. As for the food, it's typical Dutch: cheeses, fried appetizers, and a light soup. Nothing spectacular, just classic pub fare. But the real surprise is the apple pie: lots and lots of it! Delicious and very homemade. If you're thinking about waiting in line for half an hour for that other famous place next door... do yourself a favor: come here and get the pie. It's definitely worth it!

Not customer-friendly!! You simply don't get any help, and even politely saying hello is apparently too much to ask! We wanted to get a drink but left after waiting 15 minutes because no one came to help us. There are plenty of other great places in Amsterdam that do know how to be hospitable!

We went there twice during our trip, once for a hot chocolate and once for their apple pie. Both of them we're absolutly delicious. Their wipped cream is divine and the prices are really affordable. The service is really good and quick. We highly recommend this café !

Smoky bar. We left immediately. If you enjoy drinking coffee and eating cake in a smoky, noisy bar, this is the place for you.

We went in and the waiter greeted us while eating, with disdain. I asked if there was a table available for two and he said, "I don't know." Even so, we looked and sat down. No one came to serve us. At the next table, a man was clipping his fingernails. Horrible. We left.

An example of an Amsterdam coffeeshop. The atmosphere is very interesting and pleasant. The coffee we had was delicious. In my opinion, there were two drawbacks. First, the service, which seemed to want to show who was in charge (while the table was empty and the customer wanted to sit down, the staff told us to wait until we indicated whether or not the customer was allowed to sit down). Second, the café was not clean. There were long-uncleaned pieces of carpet on the tables, as well as on the floor, walls, and doors.

We were recommended this place for their apple pie by a walking tour guide on our trip. We had seen online another place just down the street, but had been told this was the best place to get more authentic apple pie that locals enjoy. It was delicious, cheaper and didn’t involve having to queue. Sat down straight away, delicious coffee and food. Highly recommend

It's a cafe mostly frequented by locals. The apple pie was creamy and fresh. It was a lovely experience accompanied by Irish coffee. While Winkel is more touristy, this one is more local. The staff are helpful and friendly.

one of the many "brown cafes" in the city (there are even board games available to play). inside is very historic, something like 400 years old. my guide said their apple pie isn't the most famous in the city, but the best. yeah pretty good

Why queue for apple pie at Winkels when this place is a minutes walk and has good beer, great atmosphere and the apple pie was delicious.

We calmly drank a few beers and paid at the bar. Another server came running over to us to ask if we'd paid. Go check with your colleague before you start accusing people.

If you're looking for apple pie and local beers, you can have a wonderful experience without waiting in line. It's more delicious and well-prepared than the famous apple pie shop next door. It's a cleaner cafe with a nicer atmosphere.

A lovely spot for a coffee and a bite. We got a selection of coffee and cold drinks. The coffee was delicious and the orange juice was super fresh. We also got the mixed snack platter. It was a selection of fried meat and cheese with a mustard and a sweet chilli sauce. All items were delicious. The staff were super friendly and offered table service outside. The seating had a lovely view of the canal. Would definitely recommend coming in if you’re in the area for the Van Gogh experience.

Very disappointing experience. The carrot cake was the worst one I had ever (dry, tasteless, and straight from the fridge), and both the apple pie and hot chocolate came automatically with whipped cream even though it costs extra and no one asked if we wanted some. When we politely mentioned after we paid that it would be nice to ask customers first, the waiter got defensive and claimed “here we never ask,” which isn’t true in the Netherlands. After we paid, he even told one of us, “Go away, I don’t like you.” Rude and unprofessional, well done.

They don’t like tourists (or foreigners in general, I am an expat), but they sure seem to like their money. Charge extra whipped cream without asking. Super rude when I suggest them to ask before adding the extra (after having paid). Apparently it’s how “it’s done here” (in the Netherlands?) although it had never happened to me so far.

When multiple locals told us the best Dutch apple pie in Amsterdam came down to two cafés on the same block — Café Hegeraad and its more famous neighbor — we knew we had to do a proper taste test. Armed with two slices, we retreated to our Airbnb, preheated the oven to 350°F, and gave each pie twelve cozy minutes to come alive. The result? Both were delicious, but Café Hegeraad’s version had that “something extra” — layers of spice, a hint of caramelized depth, and a texture that felt truly homemade. Our advice: get both and taste for yourself — but if you’re only going to do one, Café Hegeraad is the one locals really meant.

Stopped in while on a food tour specifically for the apple pie (more cake or cobbler-like) and it was delicious. A typical cozy brown pub.

The two of us stopped here for a while and treated ourselves to a slice of apple pie and a hot chocolate. The apple pie was homemade and tasted delicious, especially with a little honey (which was on the table). The hot chocolate was also delicious and warmed us up nicely on the beautiful, yet cold, midday. The ambiance is very nice, and the service is excellent. The price was also acceptable, especially since we're still in Amsterdam.

It's really nice, there's another place like this next door, but I recommend this one, it's more delicious.

It was a perfect choice for an apple pie. The atmosphere inside was especially lovely. When my mother, not fluent in English, tried to ask about the photos on the wall, they were very understanding and helpful. We couldn't resist going back the next day. I highly recommend it.

We came to this area to check out another very popular cafe. We chose this one because it was so crowded. We got the apple pie and coffee. We really enjoyed it. The pie was incredibly fresh, the sugar was well-balanced, and the coffee was excellent. I can't comment on the other place since I didn't eat there, but we were very pleased with Cafe Hegeraad. I recommend it.

We were told by a local that this place was where the locals go for apple pie. That there's another place nearby that's a bit of a tourist trap. We decided to give it a try and it was delicious! The right amount of sweet with a good crust. There's a really great farmer's market that sets up right outside the restaurant on Saturday mornings. Overall a wonderful stop and I'd recommend trying the apple pie.

The apple pie was fine. Apples were undercooked though. Though I thought "strawberry juice" meant fresh juice! Not apple and strawberry juice in a bottle!! Bonus point because I sat at Winkels next door for 15 minutes in the SCORCHING HOT sun and nobody came to me to take my order, so I went here instead, which had much more shades from the trees. There was only one guy who went around to take orders and he looked STRESSED. Nothing wrong with that though (or is it...)

Reasonably priced drinks, lovely outdoor area, terrible service/attitude. Bloke with the glasses needs a quick hiss huss hoos and a good look in the mirror. You’ll be lucky to get 3 words out of him when ordering.
