A real traditional Dutch pub. The pastries are homemade and are just as good as those at "Winkel." The service is relaxed, friendly, and kind. Highly recommended.

one of the many "brown cafes" in the city (there are even board games available to play). inside is very historic, something like 400 years old. my guide said their apple pie isn't the most famous in the city, but the best. yeah pretty good

Why queue for apple pie at Winkels when this place is a minutes walk and has good beer, great atmosphere and the apple pie was delicious.

We calmly drank a few beers and paid at the bar. Another server came running over to us to ask if we'd paid. Go check with your colleague before you start accusing people.

If you're looking for apple pie and local beers, you can have a wonderful experience without waiting in line. It's more delicious and well-prepared than the famous apple pie shop next door. It's a cleaner cafe with a nicer atmosphere.

A lovely spot for a coffee and a bite. We got a selection of coffee and cold drinks. The coffee was delicious and the orange juice was super fresh. We also got the mixed snack platter. It was a selection of fried meat and cheese with a mustard and a sweet chilli sauce. All items were delicious. The staff were super friendly and offered table service outside. The seating had a lovely view of the canal. Would definitely recommend coming in if you’re in the area for the Van Gogh experience.

Very disappointing experience. The carrot cake was the worst one I had ever (dry, tasteless, and straight from the fridge), and both the apple pie and hot chocolate came automatically with whipped cream even though it costs extra and no one asked if we wanted some. When we politely mentioned after we paid that it would be nice to ask customers first, the waiter got defensive and claimed “here we never ask,” which isn’t true in the Netherlands. After we paid, he even told one of us, “Go away, I don’t like you.” Rude and unprofessional, well done.

They don’t like tourists (or foreigners in general, I am an expat), but they sure seem to like their money. Charge extra whipped cream without asking. Super rude when I suggest them to ask before adding the extra (after having paid). Apparently it’s how “it’s done here” (in the Netherlands?) although it had never happened to me so far.

When multiple locals told us the best Dutch apple pie in Amsterdam came down to two cafés on the same block — Café Hegeraad and its more famous neighbor — we knew we had to do a proper taste test. Armed with two slices, we retreated to our Airbnb, preheated the oven to 350°F, and gave each pie twelve cozy minutes to come alive. The result? Both were delicious, but Café Hegeraad’s version had that “something extra” — layers of spice, a hint of caramelized depth, and a texture that felt truly homemade. Our advice: get both and taste for yourself — but if you’re only going to do one, Café Hegeraad is the one locals really meant.

Stopped in while on a food tour specifically for the apple pie (more cake or cobbler-like) and it was delicious. A typical cozy brown pub.

The two of us stopped here for a while and treated ourselves to a slice of apple pie and a hot chocolate. The apple pie was homemade and tasted delicious, especially with a little honey (which was on the table). The hot chocolate was also delicious and warmed us up nicely on the beautiful, yet cold, midday. The ambiance is very nice, and the service is excellent. The price was also acceptable, especially since we're still in Amsterdam.

It was a perfect choice for an apple pie. The atmosphere inside was especially lovely. When my mother, not fluent in English, tried to ask about the photos on the wall, they were very understanding and helpful. We couldn't resist going back the next day. I highly recommend it.

We came to this area to check out another very popular cafe. We chose this one because it was so crowded. We got the apple pie and coffee. We really enjoyed it. The pie was incredibly fresh, the sugar was well-balanced, and the coffee was excellent. I can't comment on the other place since I didn't eat there, but we were very pleased with Cafe Hegeraad. I recommend it.

We were told by a local that this place was where the locals go for apple pie. That there's another place nearby that's a bit of a tourist trap. We decided to give it a try and it was delicious! The right amount of sweet with a good crust. There's a really great farmer's market that sets up right outside the restaurant on Saturday mornings. Overall a wonderful stop and I'd recommend trying the apple pie.

The apple pie was fine. Apples were undercooked though. Though I thought "strawberry juice" meant fresh juice! Not apple and strawberry juice in a bottle!! Bonus point because I sat at Winkels next door for 15 minutes in the SCORCHING HOT sun and nobody came to me to take my order, so I went here instead, which had much more shades from the trees. There was only one guy who went around to take orders and he looked STRESSED. Nothing wrong with that though (or is it...)

Reasonably priced drinks, lovely outdoor area, terrible service/attitude. Bloke with the glasses needs a quick hiss huss hoos and a good look in the mirror. You’ll be lucky to get 3 words out of him when ordering.

Cold, rainy Amsterdam and we sit outside. What rescued the situation? The homemade apple pie! It was SO good even the sun starts to shine after the rain. No really, it was THAT good, for me even better than Winkel 43 apple pie ;)

Incredible apple pie! I only ate this because it was snack time, but we enjoyed it like never before. I don't know what the rest of the food is like, but this homemade apple pie was extraordinary. Highly recommended. Very friendly waiters, small, quiet terrace in front, in a place that's a little quieter than the tourist center of Amsterdam.

Table wasn't properly set up and it partly flipped, spilling our drinks all over us. No apology, no compensation, only a rude waiter suggesting we did it on purpose. Even after we helped cleaning up the table. Pretty sad.

I didn't take anything, I just went in to ask about a museum. I politely asked a waiter what time it opened, and another waiter who works there answered me rudely, shouting and getting into the conversation, talking to me as if I were an animal. I understand that he might be having a bad day, but no one told him to get into a conversation because I hadn't asked him.

Just got to Amsterdam and by chance or destiny came across with this beautiful magical place. I started drawing, had the best apple pie in my life, and ended up drinking with all the staff which made me feel like I was an old friend getting home. I’m terrible with names but we took a photo and every person in it made me love Amsterdam and its people. For sure my coffee in town and I’ll be back ♥️ hugs from Argentina 🇦🇷 Luli

The staff here are incredibly rude, rushing customers along and causing a scene in public when customers need a moment to gather their belongings. There is no need to embarrass people in a public setting. I would never come back here. Do NOT recommend!

Friendly little place. Quick food, sandwiches. But do the Dutch know how to cook? I had the soup of the day, which was good (but I don't know if it was homemade) and a cheese sandwich, but not bad. The place is cozy and intimate. The servers are pleasant.

We had a tart, a cold hot chocolate, and water. The tart was excellent, no complaints. The cold hot chocolate was rather lukewarm, which was a shame. If you're looking for a good apple pie, the one here is better than the one from our Instagram-famous neighbors.

We stopped by for some coffee and apple pie, for which this place is famous. We found it to be a beautiful atmospheric little “brown”cafe which had an authentic 1950s feel in the decor and the furniture, save of course for the flat screen TV on the wall out the back. Anyway the apple pie was delicious, freshly made with a hint of cinnamon and cloves. Yum! It’s off the beaten track but well worth the schlep.

If I may give a tip; I only noticed when paying at the bar that you also have delicious pastries and I would have appreciated it if this had been mentioned when ordering. I don't know why, but somehow I thought the café appearance gave the impression that it wouldn't be there and that's why I didn't ask for it myself, missed opportunity! 🍰

No muy lejos de la estación central, es un buen paseo a ella y te encuentras en una cafetería / bar local realmente encantador, que parece estar constantemente ocupado. Bueno para una cerveza / café, pero también debe probar el Apple Pie, que era REALMENTE bueno. Mi esposa y yo pasamos un poco de tiempo aquí y volveríamos de nuevo la próxima vez en la ciudad. Muy buen lugar para visitar.
