Nice location near the Leidseplein, also nice for drinks.

I was at Cafe in the City Amsterdam last Saturday, December 6th. A young brunette (dark blonde, between 20 and 30 years old) woman was behind the bar with two or at most three other colleagues. I remember one of her colleagues wore glasses and had dark hair, while the other was a black man with short, cropped hair. My cousin and I wanted drinks for ourselves and our group, so we stood politely in line. The atmosphere was fantastic, until we noticed that the woman (brunette, dark blonde) kept ignoring us. She stared at us politely raising our hands, and still refused to help us. At one point, she couldn't ignore it because there was no one else in line except my cousin and me, but believe it or not, she still refused to help. At one point, I got a little impatient, so I called out, "Ma'am, can you help us?" She replied with something I didn't hear. She then walked to the side of the bar to ask other customers if they needed any help. We both got angry and decided to walk over to her colleague with the glasses and dark hair. He was a really great guy; he helped me right away. At one point, I spoke to a good friend of mine, also of color, like my cousin and I, and he told me that he and two of their friends had experienced exactly the same thing with her. I don't want to immediately call her discriminatory, but I would check it out. Besides, you have top-notch workers. That guy by the coat rack is a great guy, and the woman at the front of CITC is also a great girl. CITC Amsterdam is still my favorite nightlife spot, but not anymore when I have to deal with this kind of person.

Don’t come here!! Staff was so rude and completely ignored our table. Music is too loud and prices are very expensive. Run in another direction.

Senna was an amazing host from the minute we sat down. Our food was delicious and very attractive on the plate. Senna made our experience most enjoyable. He was very attentive, his friendliness and charm shone through while he topped up our wine and had friendly conversation throughout our time here.

I came Here with friends for my birthday and it turned out to be one for the books! The staff was very friendly, the live music was very great and after our diner we had a table. The vip service was very fast and the waiters were social and funny, especially Milan!

I completely disagree with the bad reviews. I ate here yesterday with my girlfriend and our 17-year-old daughters. It was a Sunday evening, nice and quiet. The young waiter had plenty of time for us. The food took a little longer than usual, but we didn't mind; we weren't in a hurry. Every single piece of the food was delicious, the cocktails were top-notch, and the service was excellent. Definitely worth a return visit! Is it cheap? Not really. Expect to pay around €100 per person, including wine, appetizer, main course, and dessert, but I thought it was absolutely worth every penny.

Went here with my brother for a drink. The bar was half empty, and the lady at the door said, "Oh, sorry, we're full." Women are allowed in, but two men aren't. 🤷🏻‍♂️ There seems to be some gender discrimination going on here.

We received an incredibly unfriendly welcome here. After we finally got a table, it took ages before we were even served. When we finally arrived, it was served by a female employee in a very unfriendly manner. A friend of mine had brought a bottle of water. We understand that this isn't allowed in such a restaurant, but the way it was brought was downright unfriendly: the employee angrily threw it away. I found her tone absolutely inappropriate and unfriendly. Later, we wanted to use the restroom, but the door wouldn't open. Instead of helping us, another female employee reacted irritably and made a derogatory remark. When we then decided not to tip because of this attitude, the male employee walked away unfriendly without a word. The atmosphere is also not at all what you'd expect: too quiet to be called a club, and too noisy to simply sit comfortably. Absolutely not a pleasant experience; I would never return here again.

Delicious sushi, nice atmosphere

Excellent. The food tasted fine, but nothing special for the price. The service, hospitality, and friendliness of the staff were top-notch! The staff were friendly and pleasant, but there was a mistake with the order. It was resolved wonderfully and immediately. The atmosphere was also great, though the music could be turned down a bit so you can still hear each other. Parking in the area is also really difficult and unclear.

On Mondays, Café in the City has a special deal: signature sushi rolls for €10 (normally around €25). We went there especially for this, but when we got the bill, we were charged the full prices. Only after we pointed it out ourselves was the bill corrected, and the difference was huge. It’s disappointing that the staff didn’t adjust this on their own, and there’s no mention of the deal anywhere in the restaurant. For tourists and new guests, this doesn’t feel very transparent. I’m writing this review to help others be aware of the deal so they can actually benefit from it, and also to remind everyone to always double-check their bill. That said, the food itself was very tasty.

I was here in March, and unfortunately, my experience was anything but positive. During my visit, one of the staff accidentally dropped a firecracker-like effect, damaging my jacket. This was already very annoying, of course, but what happened next only made matters worse. I contacted the restaurant immediately after the incident, and they indicated that I would receive compensation for the damage. They also emailed and confirmed that they would take care of the matter. Months have now passed, and despite several attempts to contact them again, I haven't received a single response. It's a shame that a mistake on their part isn't handled properly. To me, this speaks volumes about their customer service and the level of responsibility they take. I would therefore not recommend this restaurant—not for the food or the atmosphere, but for how they treat their guests when something goes wrong. This is no way to treat your customers; it's terrible.

First of all, thank you to Hugo, who was exceptional #BestBarmaid 🏆, and to all the staff. Hugo made me an incredible cocktail (passion fruit/lychee). AMAZING. We're talking about the atmosphere, half local, half Afrobeats (with incredible musical references). I had an incredible time with my best friend. The other customers were all locals, ages 20-37! It was a friendly atmosphere. Everyone danced in front of the bar to celebrate this moment of communion! I had a better time than in a nightclub! I recommend it 200%.

Pleasant surprise. Great music, mostly Afro, we were able to dance and the cocktails are super good, I recommend the Porn Star Martini. Ask for Hugo for your cocktail.

You initially pay €1 for the toilet, and after an hour, you pay €7 each time. It's a scam! We waited patiently in line, but the security guards were so rude and antisocial. People he knows are allowed to push forward. It could be friendlier!

We had the Sunday brunch. It was a lavish buffet with sushi, sashimi, salad, several meat dishes, and oysters. Drinks were not included. Delicious desserts. Definitely recommended for a brunch with a wide selection. The staff is friendly, sometimes a bit distracted, but service-oriented.

Not a good place if you want to eat. The tuna tacos were far too small and each one was less than a mouthful. The tacos were about 1 inch in length each… that is not normal for 20 euros. Definitely do not recommend eating here.

Went multiple times with joggers Under armour etc but today it was a problem 1 of us was with joggers and said we couldn’t eat there just because of the joggers which is total BS. Ive seen it often enough.

Recently went there with a friend and we were not helped while new customers were allowed to take a seat, then we took a seat ourselves because no one came our way. We did this at a table where no reservation was indicated. A little later we got dishes placed in front of us and then an antisocial employee came our way to send us away. And during a previous visit to Café in the city my deposit was not taken from the bill. After having emailed a few times with an employee I suddenly got no answer anymore and also not my money.

The food is great, really fresh and yummy. Sadly the music is really loud so you really cannot have a conversation.. service is fine but the sushis are overpriced, 25 euros for a maki roll!

On mondays they have a deal where sushis are 10 euros each (idk if this is a temporary deal or not). Sushis were fantastic, they were fresh and scrumptious. The location was also very accessible, in the heart of Leidsplein. Service was a bit slow and the atmosphere is fine. For sushis and drinks I would recommend checking this place out.

These people are racists. We wanted to have a drink here but the security guard or whatever he was didn't let us in because we were 4 dark ladies. He gave as a reason that 1 of us was wearing leggings. While there were only white people inside and a boy was just wearing short jogging pants. There was no mention of a dress code anywhere. I think it's a disgrace that this is still possible in 2025. Even if you remove my review I will continue to post it. Just be honest that that's why you didn't let us in. We all looked well dressed. The leggings were perfectly fine.

What a bad place! I have never been treated so unfairly and inhumanely. Staff that can't smile. After converting the place from restaurant to club, tables and chairs are pushed into people's ribs without mercy. You also see the same type of people in the staff. As soon as you look a little different, they look at you what you're doing? But in the meantime they ask every minute if you already know what you want from the menu. We know our club. Tip from flip? Keep your money in your pocket or go to café Rotterdam.

If you want a relaxed evening out, don't go here. The music is so loud that talking and hearing the other person is almost impossible, unless you want to scream. The live musician tries his best but the sound is distortedly loud. Otherwise, the food is nice and the service is good.

Oh my goodness, so glad to have stumbled upon this place, the food was so delicious and we just so happened to be there on a Monday where they have a big discount on their rolls. The food was so fresh and delicious, the staff very friendly and loved the atmosphere. Great place, if I lived nearby I would frequent this spot, Australia is just a little too far haha

Wat een vreselijk plek echt ik kom hier nooit meer. Ik kom hier al 10 jaar met mijn familie en ze kennen ons daar allemaal. Ik kom daar op koningsdag waar mensen met de zonnebrillen binnen stonden omdat ze allemaal helemaal stijf van de coke stonden. Ik ben een meisje van 20 jaar en 1.63 groot. Ik was vrolijk en ging van buiten naar binnen want ik had mijn vriendin gehaald. Toen kreeg ik een paar keer al duwtjes dat iemand mij er niet door wilde laten maar ik negeerde het en probeerde een gaatje te zoeken zodat ik verder kon lopen. Toen kreeg ik een harde duw terug en zij de man van bijna 40 met een bril op ‘wil je door me heen ofzo’ op een agressieve manier en dat herhaalde hij. Dus ik wordt boos en zeg dat hij even normaal tegen mij moet doen en ik wil alsnog mijn weg vervolgen. Daarna krijg ik vol in mijn gezicht een drankje gegooid door deze man. ik was drijfnat , alles in mijn ogen. Ja dan wordt je natuurlijk heel erg boos en had de beveiliging hem eruit moeten slepen. Maar nee ik werd bij mijn keel gegrepen door een personeelslid genaamd thomas (met inhammen) dus geen beveiliging. Omdat ik boos werd op deze man. Dus ik schreeuw dat hij van mij af moet blijven. Maar hij bleef doorgaan. Toen kwam er een beveiliger (van ik weet niet hoe breed) van achter die mijn polsen over elkaar deed en heel hard vast greep en toen ik al buiten was kreeg ik nog een trap na. En niemand maar dan ook niemand stond bij de cokesnuiver met de bril. Hoe krom dat je dit bij een vrouw doet echt te schandalig voor woorden.

I must honestly say that I expected more from it. The food was fine, but it lacked that little bit extra to really impress. The staff was also friendly, although some mutual comments seemed a bit too casual - especially because they were clearly audible to the guests. What was really disappointing was the condition of our table inside: food scraps on the floor and a sticky floor unfortunately made for a less fresh impression. Shame.

Have eaten here for the second time in two years. Always on day visits to Amsterdam. Proximity to the Hardrock Cafe. Good ambience both inside and outside. Sitting in the sun yesterday was lovely. Small but good menu, okay price for the location. We liked the food. We'll be back.

Worthless experience - definitely not recommended! This was without a doubt one of the worst restaurant visits I've ever had. The service was downright bad: the staff was unfriendly, disinterested and not helpful at all. We had to wait forever for both our food and drinks, and when the food finally came it was cold and tasteless. Moreover, the order was wrong, but instead of offering a solution, the staff reacted with irritation and indifference. Hygiene also left much to be desired. The tables were sticky, the cutlery was not clean and the toilets were downright filthy. In addition, the prices were way too high for what you get - definitely not good value for money. Cocktails had absolutely no alcohol in them. In short, a terrible experience from start to finish. I will never come back here and I recommend everyone to avoid this restaurant!

Our rude security guard makes fun of you a bit before he lets you in. Music was too loud to have a conversation, but food was Fine, but pricey for the small portions.

Expérience déplorable. Nous étions un groupe de 7 amis venus célébrer le Nouvel An, avec un acompte de 210 € déjà payé. Cependant, ce montant n’a pas été déduit de l’addition finale. C’est totalement inacceptable, une véritable escroquerie. De plus, le personnel était extrêmement désagréable. Je déconseille fortement cet établissement, qui donne l’impression de vouloir simplement arnaquer ses clients.

Review Ik had hoge verwachtingen van Café in the City, maar mijn ervaring viel helaas enorm tegen. Ondanks dat ik ruim op tijd had gereserveerd, kreeg ik een plek toegewezen pal naast de deur. Dit was niet alleen een slechte plek, maar ook erg koud. Toen ik vroeg om een andere tafel (waarbij ik duidelijk lege tafels zag), werd me verteld dat er geen andere opties waren. Bovendien moest ik gedwongen mijn jas inleveren bij binnenkomst, terwijl ik aangaf dat ik dit liever niet wilde. Ze stonden erop dat mijn jas werd aangenomen, maar toen ik het ijskoud kreeg en mijn jas terugvroeg, mocht ik deze niet aantrekken. Dit voelde onnodig streng en onvriendelijk. De serveerster die dit afhandelde, was ronduit brutaal en totaal niet begripvol. Het eten kon de ervaring helaas niet redden. De sushi was droog en leek oud, wat absoluut niet aan mijn verwachtingen voldeed. De lamskotelet was op zich lekker, maar ik moest er extra lang op wachten omdat het vlees niet goed doorbakken was en opnieuw bereid moest worden. Door deze combinatie van slechte service, onaangename sfeer en teleurstellend eten, raad ik Café in the City helaas niet aan. Mijn ervaring was allesbehalve positief.

Very friendly, but (sometimes) pushy staff. Good food, a bit on the pricey side but worth the investment. The pushy part for me was because an employee came by every 5 minutes to pour the large bottle of water that we had ordered in addition to other drinks and food into everyone's glass. And then always say 'Is there anything I can do for you?'. Some people will experience it as service, but I experience it as overzealous or pushy. I came for a birthday, which included eating and drinking. This also includes conversations, but if this is constantly interrupted by sales staff, this is disruptive. At the end of our reservation the coats were collected, but given to the wrong people.

Some friends Peter and Erika invited us and the truth is that we were very comfortable, in this pleasant place and the manager was very attentive and we enjoyed beautiful views of the immense forests and large beautiful garden.

Al met al was dit een geweldige avond die zowel culinair als op het gebied van vermaak aan al onze verwachtingen voldeed. Het restaurant biedt een ideale combinatie van goed eten, uitstekende service en een unieke ervaring. Ik zou het zeker aanbevelen voor iedereen die op zoek is naar een avond uit met net dat beetje extra. Zeker voor een speciale gelegenheid is dit een aanrader!

Great restaurant we came upon. The 3 of us enjoyed Thai Bef Salad, Avocado Toast Smash, and Poke Bowl with added tuna. We also shared the Peking Duck Spring Rolls. All delicious 😋

Had a delicious meal, spent a day in Amsterdam with mother and this was around the corner from the theater where we went to a performance. We had to wait a little longer for our lunch, but they apologized in between because it was a bit busier. We had a delicious meal there with good wine. Will definitely come back.
