We had a delicious meal at Eetcafe ’t Gasthuys with a group of 20 people! Really good atmosphere, great service, and a nice private spot on the first floor. Drinks first, followed by a tasty meal. Excellent value for money and, above all, really super friendly staff! In short, if you want tasty satay and a nice glass of wine in Amsterdam, just go there!

Thank you so much for the amazing and incredible experience. We enjoyed amazing hospitality, service and quality of food. Our main idea was to looking for a place of traditional Dutch cuisine. This Gasthuys will always remind us of our great time in Amsterdam. Located next to little channel, the place provided a terrace, a cutely furnished restaurant and all facilities that were needed. We loved this truly authentic brown café, so much so that we even went back a second time before leaving. The location is really lovely, right along the canal and very quiet, unlike the surrounding area. The food is very good for reasonable prices, and the waitresses were very friendly and smiling.

A super welcoming place, perfect for a wonderful breakfast. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and we even took advantage of a great promotion. The coffee is delicious! The terrace is simply beautiful, right in front of the canal, where you can relax and watch the boats go by. I recommend it 100%!

Very nice and friendly staff; we ended up on the recommendation of another café owner. We arrived at 9:15 PM, the kitchen closes at 9:30 PM, but that was no problem at all. You get a lot on your plate for little money and of good quality. I found it cozier and better than the run-of-the-mill touristy eateries that try to fleece you out of your euros. We will definitely be back on our next visit to Amsterdam.

Had a great day, incredibly friendly staff who are never too reluctant to go the extra mile. A bit of an open secret, but still my favorite spot on Thursday afternoons. And by now, Saturdays are really fun too!

Has some of the best value based food items in Amsterdam but steak it to cheap and soup of the day should have been bigger but chef cooked food perfectly and service was nice.

Nice, cozy brown pub / restaurant

I have been coming here a few times a year for the past 25 years because the chicken satay, fries, and salad are very good, at a reasonable price. And the atmosphere is very pleasant, a real Amsterdam cafe. A few days ago we were there again, and my wife ordered a steak, well done. This steak was incredibly tough, and she did her best to cut small pieces and chew thoroughly, afraid she would choke. We mentioned it to the waitress, and again when paying the bill. The response was that this is normal for a well-done steak. I don't think that is correct: when I cook a well-done steak myself, the meat is a bit firmer, but not tough. I am a little worried that lower quality meat was used here. I hope the Gasthuys remains critical of these kinds of issues. Otherwise, we had a fine evening.

Disappointing and Inconsistent Treatment of a Disabled Visitor! My partner and I were visiting Amsterdam from the UK. My partner has a mobility impairment, uses a mobility scooter, and holds a Blue Badge. We wanted to visit Upstairs Pancakes, but unfortunately the steep stairs make it inaccessible for my partner. On previous visits to Amsterdam, including two days before this incident, we had arranged with both Upstairs Pancakes and Café 't Gasthuys for my partner to sit at Café 't Gasthuys and eat a pancake purchased from Upstairs Pancakes. We also purchased drinks and snacks from Café 't Gasthuys, so both businesses benefited from our custom. During the previous two days of our visit, staff at both venues were welcoming and supportive, and the arrangement was not a problem. However, on Saturday 30 May, our experience at Café 't Gasthuys was completely different. The manager on duty told us that we could not stay. When we explained that the same arrangement had been agreed by staff on the previous days and on a previous trip, he simply stated that he was the manager and did not want us to remain. No explanation or alternative solution was offered. What was particularly upsetting was the lack of understanding and consideration shown towards a customer with a mobility impairment. We were not asking for special treatment—only for a practical accommodation that had already been accepted by both businesses and had worked well before. The inconsistency between staff members and the dismissive manner in which we were treated left us feeling unwelcome and disappointed. It unfortunately overshadowed what had otherwise been a positive experience in Amsterdam.

The atmosphere was super nice! Right by the canal. Calm and authentic. We had our aperitifs there, and for the price, it was cheaper and better than other places. We decided to have dinner, and I ordered the ribs. Wow! The best I've had in a long time!

Today I ate the best pork tenderloin satay of my life. The satay was nice and spicy and the pork tenderloin firm and flavorful. Super friendly staff.

Perfect spot to get a bit to eat and a brew. With outdoor tables canal side which is where I sat. Had the burger & fries, salad, and of course a beer. Service was good, fairly quick, & reasonably priced. Eat while watching several boats big & small pass by. Little bit out of the centre in Rokin area and not as hectic. Definately worth a visit.

Very pleasant place in a beautiful neighborhood @Rokin - not as hectic as the classical city centre, there are all types of seats, great for large groups or couples. During the summer ☀️ there are seats outside next to the canal where the little boats are passing by with cheerful tourists & locals. The inside area is cozy, the staff is friendly and there is a decent selection of food & drinks typical gastropub Amsterdam. Loved this place.

Good pub for dinner and drink. The food is quite good (better than expected for a pub with food) We ordered bread with spreads (the bread is quite a lot for small portion of spreads) Beefstuck and spareribs (served with salads and fries), they are good taste, personally I find the spareribs is better. Dame blanche (normal ice cream with choco sauce and whippin cream)

Nice place, nice staff, nice beer. What more can you say? Well, the following: A pleasant find near the centre of the 'dam. I was wary of the more 'touristy' cafés/bars one would find near the centre, so was overjoyed to find this establishment. Tucked out of the way with a bustling yet welcoming vibe, this ticked all my proverbial boxes ✅ They say when in Rome, so when in Amsterdam, I partook in a Heineken. With the local water, not that Tadcaster muck, it was a tasty beverage for sure. Chased this up with another local tipple, the Skuumkoppe - yummo! All in all, an awesome time, just what I was looking for ☺️

If you could give more than 5 stars I would have done so! I have known 't Gasthuys for at least 30 years and used to go there more often when I still lived in Amsterdam than now, since I moved. There is more and more to criticize about the catering industry, a reason for me to go less and then prefer to go to the familiar establishments. Yesterday in 't Gasthuys no predictable service (standard questions and comments) and just good food as I knew it for a remarkably reasonable price: apparently it is still possible, even in the heart of Amsterdam. But that service... wow! What a relief not to hear 'completely good' and 'everything to your liking' and to be addressed 'normally' in Dutch. Again: in the heart of Amsterdam. They take your order without a mobile device (or do so remarkably inconspicuously) and not only remember your order but also put it in front of the right person, both the drinks and the food. Maybe they know it so well because the drinks and food come from the bar and kitchen in no time, no idea, we're not even going to think about that. The way they stood at the table and walked across the (full) terrace was so smooth and with verve as if they had been working here for 30 years. But I can't remember being served by toddlers back then. I heard from a reliable source that a few younger employees recently took over 't Gasthuys. By people who get it, are clearly into it and know how to make your guests happy, thank you! ******

Me gusta este lugar porque está en el centro de la ciudad, pero especialmente en este canal la multitud no es demasiado grande. El lugar podría estar lleno si el tiempo es bueno (fuera), pero la gente rota rápidamente según mi experiencia. Sirven un montón de bebidas alcohólicas, cervezas, cócteles, etc .. y hamburguesas, otra comida rápida, guarniciones, por lo que se recomienda para comer algo también. Mi experiencia fue diferente con el personal. Están sobrecargados de trabajo lo admito, así que siempre corren a algún lugar pero definitivamente no son groseros. We had a family dinner here with about 13 people. Everything was excellently prepared, the food delicious, the service friendly and attentive, and the place very cozy and clean. I've also been there several times for lunch, and it's also been excellent and great value. I think this is the only place in Amsterdam where you can still eat well for a reasonable price and with excellent service. Plus, they have a beautiful terrace next to one of Amsterdam's beautiful canals. You can also simply have a drink here and experience the original atmosphere of a typical, authentic Amsterdam bar. Highly recommended!
