€11.40 for 3 beers in a plastic cup. A very unusual situation. We're not used to it.

English below, The staff is very friendly, smiling, and welcoming. The girl behind the bar on Thursday-Friday night, July 10, 2026, was especially amazing. I had a flight in the morning and needed a cup of coffee to stay awake. She served me a cup of coffee with pleasure, even though it is not customary to order coffee at this time. She respected my request, whereas I had asked for the same thing at another bar nearby before coming here. The bartender there had gotten angry and sent me away, just because I wanted a cup of coffee. He thought I was drunk for ordering coffee at this time, or that I was asking for weed (which is a common word for coffee in Amsterdam). Hooischip also has great background music and a nice atmosphere. The best thing about this bar is, once again, how friendly, talkative, and nice the staff is. I want to thank the manager and the owner of this bar for their sensible staff choices and the way they have set up the place. Great prices too! I’ve been to cafe quite regularly in recent years. It’s a classic brown bar with a fascinating history and has a wonderful location on the river. Tamara and Daisy looked after me and provided me with information about the history of the cafe.

A cosy corner cafe on Amstel river. On a rainy day in Amsterdam I was so happy to come across this cafe which, I believe, I also visited years ago. Enjoyed a tasty cappuccino and appeltaart with slagroom. A warm wooden interior with a bar full of cheerful people may be the first thing you will see when you enter, and a few steps up, you will get the vibe of 1960s with cosy pictures and objects on the walls. I love it.

This is my personal favorite brown cafe / bar in Amsterdam as it is near my old apartment. Very cozy, great pea soup. Perfect place to relax and talk to locals over a pint or a coffee or to gather with an intimate group of friends.

I think it's a small cafe frequented only by those in the know. We stumbled upon it by chance and had tea. The bar area had a friendly atmosphere. The staff were attentive and the ambiance was wonderful. Ideal for those who love old-fashioned cafes.

A charming Dutch bar. A nice range of beers on offer. Not cheap it has to be said e.g. EUR 8 for half a litre of Heineken. But certainly more authentic than many bars in Amsterdam.

Loved this place in what appears to be an authentic Dutch Bar... The meatballs are fab, service great especially by the blonde lady, give her a pay rise :-)! First night we were in met Cass (?) who's been living in Amsterdam with her lovely husband for 50 years, she's sure still got a Glaswegian accent... Very friendly bar all round!

Nice Bar with a cool atmosphare

Frank is amazing!!! We came late and he was the only server and bartender and we never felt neglected! He was so kind, prompt, and thoughtful. This spot is so special, overlooking the city and the weather was great. Frank 4ever!!

Lovely authentic old dutch bar. Went there for a tea and the service was attentive and caring. I even forgot my AirPods there during the morning and came back to pick them up in the evening. The waiter had kindly put them on the side for me and they remembered my face. Kind and caring. Would totally recommend.

This place is on my way home and, as I am often deserving of a tasty sweet treat, I go here quite a lot. Usually I have coffee and apple pie. Occasionally — if I’ve been a very good boy — I have an Irish coffee. Café 't Hooischip is another great example of gezellig Dutch horeca — the food is good, the atmosphere is great, the service is mostly excellent, although some of the younger staff are not very attentive, at least not to a greying, increasingly invisible old man like myself. No wonder I drink. Inside in the winter, nice and warm; outside in the summer, preferably sitting in the evening sun, it’s all good. Lunch menu available. Beer too. What more could you ask? Just one thing: not to be repeatedly ignored by the bar staff. Otherwise faultless.

Nice place to stop for a beer and a tosti but the clientele sitting talking on video calls on speaker phone or laptop really does drag down the ambience. Still I'll likely be back, but perhaps next time I'll sit outside.

Great little find on our walk around Amsterdam. Small café but the atmosphere was wonderful and the staff very friendly. Food was amazing and the Coffee strong, just how I like it. Definitely recommend a visit.
