Friendly coffee prices right in the middle of Amsterdam.

It's lovely here on Saturdays. Good food, close to the Noordermarkt.

This is my favorite cafe in Amsterdam.I've lived in amsterdam for 9 years . My first date with my wife Was there

I had an Americano and a croissant with a bagel and cheese for breakfast. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, making it a great place to start the day. It seemed to be a popular spot with locals, which gave it a nice, authentic feel. The waiters were quite helpful. The prices were very reasonable. I paid a total of just €7.10 for my breakfast. I sat outside, where the seating area was spacious, comfortable, and well laid out. Overall, it was a pleasant place to enjoy breakfast and coffee.

Super cosy bar, was great to watch the world cup. Nice bartenders :)

Always delicious with early breakfast l. Sometimes it can be very disappointing. Waiting a long time for a toasted sandwich and croquette. (It wasn't busy on the terrace, by the way.) Inquired after 30 minutes. The waiter went to smoke a cigarette behind us. After 45 minutes, it turned out there were no croquettes. Can happen. No apologies, no free drink. Not for the rest of the food either. (Yes, at some point there were apologies.) So, rude. A shame, it could have been a nice moment.

My friend got harassed by a man in the bar and the staff saw it without doing anything about it…She was advised to call the police but nothing else was done… The man kept enjoying his time in the bar despite pushing my friend off the chair and calling her out for speaking English. Shame to the staff for not caring about their costumers!

Café Thijssen, my favorite café for coffee, a croissant, and a boiled egg on Saturday mornings. This is the first review I’m writing via Google, because I just wanted to mention that I’m annoyed by a few things. Lately, the milk for the cappuccino isn't being frothed properly, and the croissants are often burnt. Such a shame!! The staff are often hungover (which I understand, of course) and therefore often forget orders. And that is just such a pity!! I love Café Thijssen, so here’s an open question: how can people drink in the evenings while the cappuccinos remain up to standard? Lots of love!

Don’t go here if you are a woman or a foreigner. Place is filled with disgusting men and staff are no better. I saw a young woman get violated and assaulted and nothing was done about the situation.

I saw a woman get assaulted by a man at the bar, specifically, she was pushed off of her chair. The manager did not take it seriously at all, and as a women this raises a concern for me to ever visit this bar again.

Staff & Manager tolerate violent behavior against foreigners and women. I got pushed off my chair from a mid 40 dutch man who yelled at me for speaking english (im a woman and 25). Staff saw it and told me all they can do is keep an eye on him. No actions were taken and I was not taken seriously. Highly recommend to find another bar, plenty of nice ones around that area that deserve it more.

Very poor management of conflict situations!

Especially during a time like the World Cup, we should be creating spaces free of violence (especially toward women!!!)… Yesterday, my friend group and I were shown otherwise by the bar manager and its staff. Very disappointed because we liked to visit this bar a lot.

They literally say they don’t care to put in the TV the World Cup Mexico game, just if the Dutch would play they would. Bro, that why Mexico it’s way more liked internationally. We would display the Dutch game in Mexico 🫶🏻🇲🇽

Had a great day. Hanged out at the bar from opening to closing and wasn't bored for a single moment, thanks in part to that drop-dead gorgeous bartender (Floris, I think). See you soon ;)

A nice cozy and pleasant cafe, good service

Food was good and the place is a nice and quiet part of town, but the wait was too long: for two people we had to wait 1 hour for a salad and a sandwich… a bit disappointing.

Really nice atmosphere and good pie. Also Sofia is the nicest waitress have seen in the area!

With a terrace and interior that are not full at all, and a 5-person serving staff, having to wait 25 minutes for a glass of Cola is really very long. The staff just walks around but doesn't serve. Too bad Missed opportunity

A nice little pub with reasonable prices. The nachos with sour cream, cheese, and onions are perfect for a small snack.

We only had drinks here, so can't comment on the food. But the vibes were excellent, good selection of drinks (both coffee and beer) and the service was great. Very fun and popular spot (it gets very busy on nice days).

A traditional Brown house, mix of locals and us tourists. The service was good and friendly and the food was small menu. It was good but the point is to have a beer or two and talk with a small snack and it did accomplish that. I would say nice old building but most are

A weekday afternoon at the bar. The sounds of the city mingle with the conversations of the people on the terrace, the rattling of plates, cutlery, and the clinking of glasses. It is a lovely place to be.

Unfortunately, we were ignored by the staff for 15 minutes, even though the restaurant was only half full. Very poor service. Our order was only taken after we asked several times. Don't go there.

The location is cute. The employees are not friendly, we had to ask 2 times for sauce, and only when I went inside and asked for it a third time, we managed to get it. They did not look like they cared at all. It was also disapointing to wait 45min for spring roolls. After one hour of waiting for nachos, we decided to leave. The price of drinks is around the norm, but the cocktail I had tasted like alcohol with soda and nothing else. The fries portion is quite small, wich is not usuall in Amsterdam. There is many cute cafes in this area, I would not recomend this one.

The camera eats first. I came here specifically for the apple pie and it delivered. The crust, filling, creme were all very good. Service was also quick and helpful. Tap water was provided.

The venue is lovely and the menu expansive, but two out of the three drinks I ordered were replaced with different ones without them notifying me of the change and the bill took a good 20 minutes to arrive. Meanwhile, the lady at the bar was communicating mundane messages to her colleagues, but inexplicably screaming at the top of her lungs.

We weren’t very satisfied, firstly when came inside and sat, the table was very dirty and we had to ask the stuff to clean it,then we ordered onion soup and waited 20 minuts till they said they is no one left. We reordered for sandwich with chips, then got sandwich with no chips without hearing any sorry from stuff, we asked for the chips and they said they also don’t have it anymore. Without any compensation, we demanded on some discount

We couldn't try their food because the kitchen was closed. We did try some of their beers. It has a very nice atmosphere; a warm, friendly, and relaxed ambiance. It's a great place for both locals and tourists to enjoy spending time, chatting, having a drink, and relaxing.

September 2025 Other than the fact QR codes available for quick ordering at the terrace, still a nice place to go to. One of these cafés you just love in Amsterdam. Good laid back quick service and of course a good apple pie. Sitting on the terrace when weather permits. Good place to start the day ...

Unwelcoming, unfriendly, and no apology when they spill a full tray of drinks on you! What a pathetic place! They used to put the customer first, but that's not the case here. I'd say find another, but nice, pub in the city center.

The chai tea tasted like dish soap. That was it.

Loved it so much that we ate there both days of our trip. It was super busy on the Saturday as it’s located right next to the market, but we still got a table outside (has overhead heat lamps). Really well priced and has lots of vegan options, it’s cosy and atmospheric with little nooks. Offers boardgames inside too!

Amazing authentic restaurant, I truly recommend ! It was filled with locals and the food was very affordable. We got the bitterballs, the tuna melt toasty, and the cheese and tomato toasty. Then for dessert we got the apple pie ! Everything was really good, the service was really quick also.

Been coming to Thijssen for 25 years. Lovely staff, great atmosphere. Brought a group of 10 friends on my recommendation. An incredibly rude person served us. Aggressive, off-putting, egotistical guy who told me I was rude for asking to split the bill (in advance). My friends decided to cancel the order on the basis of his behaviour. I can't help but think it was because he believed we were not Dutch. When he realised we spoke/were Dutch, his attitude changed somewhat. If you want to risk being served by him, then this is the place. Such a shame. I've been to Thijssen longer than this guy is old.

We stopped by for some bitterballens and an apple pie. Food was decent, toilets a little dirty and service not the best.

Mmm where do start…… the pile of dirty dishes? The ice cream level of foam in my latte or the adolescent server eating food of customers plates…. It was all around a colourful visit. the Dutch aren’t known for their food, so I’ll let it pass. Texture of the bitterballs left a little to be desired HOWEVER the croquettes were also less than satisfactory Lil cheeky charging us for 2 small glasses of tap water mmhhhhmmm but I admire a business run by 3 teenagers succeeding in this economy. so all I can say is touché and jolly good show old chap!!

It's because they have good beer on tap here, which you don't get at other cafes, but otherwise I wouldn't have a reason to come back. Waiting an hour for nachos doesn't seem right after asking twice. And then you get half a size for full price because they ran out of guacamole.

Everything is sticky here. It's so dirty. The menu is sticky, so disgusting. It's like they never clean. And I'm not really a germ phobia, but this is even taking it too far. The service is friendly, but it often takes forever for your order to arrive. Yesterday I sat there alone for half an hour (on my birthday, no less) and my order never arrived. No one even came to ask why I was still sitting there at an empty table. There are always parties going on, birthdays and such. Half the bar is full of people celebrating birthdays together. Not nice. And if you're sitting in a spot reserved for such a party, you have to move. No, Thijssen has really lost its shine. Such a shame.

Cafe Thijssen, a cafe that fits perfectly in Amsterdam's Jordaan district, but the yuppie clientele, the owner, and the staff would do much better at the foot of an office tower on Amsterdam's Zuidas. The service is chaotic and completely at odds with each other. We spent some time in the cafe with a group of former colleagues when, out of the blue, we were asked to move elsewhere because the tables we were sitting at were reserved for a reception. We were assigned a large table in the middle of the cafe. After a few rounds of beer and three servings of bitterballen (a type of Dutch snack), we placed an order for a round of beer and another three servings of bitterballen. The beer was served, but no bitterballen. When I asked where they were, the answer was: "The kitchen is busy, but I'll just ask." It turned out there was a problem with the deep-frying options, and they couldn't serve bitterballen (bitterballen), but they did serve cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, and "vlammetjes" (small, crispy, and skewered meatballs). When we asked how these were heated, no answer was forthcoming. After ordering this alternative, a woman told us there were no bitterballen, cheese sticks, or chicken nuggets, but we could order nachos or cheese cubes. She then backed off after she told us a snack order from the deep-fry had already been placed. We were refused another round of beer because our table had been booked while we were still there, and they asked us to leave. After this, the atmosphere became grim; we felt this wasn't appropriate for a pub, and the staff blamed each other for skipping reservations. Our question about how to reserve a table for other guests while there were still guests at the table was dismissed as a result of the crowds, and they said there were many reservations... reservations? in a pub? So if you ever want to have a beer at Café Thijssen, don't forget to ask how long your time slot is. Before you know it, your time is up and you'll be thirsty again. What a disgrace for an Amsterdam café...

My boyfriend and I come here often and Café Thijssen never disappoints. They serve Jupiler, Jopen & Franziskaner on tap and have a very well rounded menu that is open early until late. We stopped by for some vaasjes and a bite to eat and as always had a lovely time. Thanks to the whole team!

My dog pulled me inside - probably because it has this typical pub smell. Staff were kind, coffee was good, toilets were clean. I enjoyed it!

My friends and I visited Café Thijssen in Amsterdam and enjoyed some cocktails. However, when it was time to pay, we noticed extra items added to our bill that we hadn't ordered. Upon questioning, the staff claimed these were separate charges for ingredients, which seemed quite deceptive. This experience felt like a targeted trick towards tourists. Be vigilant and check your bill thoroughly to avoid similar surprises!

Great outdoor place for beers and snacks

Good apple cake but the service is VERY VERY VERYYYY SLOW

It is a very special place, ancient but cozy. And the breakfast is really good!

We managed to snag a table outside on a Friday afternoon for two people and our dog. The service was super friendly, and our order was taken relatively quickly. The apple pie we ordered took a while to arrive along with the drinks, but the roll with the vegan croquette took over 45 minutes to arrive. That was definitely too long for what it was. But both the roll and the pie were very good. All in all, the location on a slightly less busy street is nice, and the food is great, but the wait was a real bummer.

A young guy with orange hair has served us really well. I think his name was swerren or something like that. He was very helpful because he knew where we would go for a nice day out. And I would recommend this to any tourist who wants to have a good first impression of Amsterdam. 10/10
