It's a cozy place any time of year, but in winter, you can't imagine how interesting it is... 100% unmissable!

The chai tea tasted like dish soap. That was it.

Loved it so much that we ate there both days of our trip. It was super busy on the Saturday as it’s located right next to the market, but we still got a table outside (has overhead heat lamps). Really well priced and has lots of vegan options, it’s cosy and atmospheric with little nooks. Offers boardgames inside too!

Amazing authentic restaurant, I truly recommend ! It was filled with locals and the food was very affordable. We got the bitterballs, the tuna melt toasty, and the cheese and tomato toasty. Then for dessert we got the apple pie ! Everything was really good, the service was really quick also.

Been coming to Thijssen for 25 years. Lovely staff, great atmosphere. Brought a group of 10 friends on my recommendation. An incredibly rude person served us. Aggressive, off-putting, egotistical guy who told me I was rude for asking to split the bill (in advance). My friends decided to cancel the order on the basis of his behaviour. I can't help but think it was because he believed we were not Dutch. When he realised we spoke/were Dutch, his attitude changed somewhat. If you want to risk being served by him, then this is the place. Such a shame. I've been to Thijssen longer than this guy is old.

We stopped by for some bitterballens and an apple pie. Food was decent, toilets a little dirty and service not the best.

Mmm where do start…… the pile of dirty dishes? The ice cream level of foam in my latte or the adolescent server eating food of customers plates…. It was all around a colourful visit. the Dutch aren’t known for their food, so I’ll let it pass. Texture of the bitterballs left a little to be desired HOWEVER the croquettes were also less than satisfactory Lil cheeky charging us for 2 small glasses of tap water mmhhhhmmm but I admire a business run by 3 teenagers succeeding in this economy. so all I can say is touché and jolly good show old chap!!

It's because they have good beer on tap here, which you don't get at other cafes, but otherwise I wouldn't have a reason to come back. Waiting an hour for nachos doesn't seem right after asking twice. And then you get half a size for full price because they ran out of guacamole.

Everything is sticky here. It's so dirty. The menu is sticky, so disgusting. It's like they never clean. And I'm not really a germ phobia, but this is even taking it too far. The service is friendly, but it often takes forever for your order to arrive. Yesterday I sat there alone for half an hour (on my birthday, no less) and my order never arrived. No one even came to ask why I was still sitting there at an empty table. There are always parties going on, birthdays and such. Half the bar is full of people celebrating birthdays together. Not nice. And if you're sitting in a spot reserved for such a party, you have to move. No, Thijssen has really lost its shine. Such a shame.

Very cosy bar! A bit packed, but seemed very normal for a Saturday night. Also, they were playing some disco classics. Overall a really nice atmosphere.

Cafe Thijssen, a cafe that fits perfectly in Amsterdam's Jordaan district, but the yuppie clientele, the owner, and the staff would do much better at the foot of an office tower on Amsterdam's Zuidas. The service is chaotic and completely at odds with each other. We spent some time in the cafe with a group of former colleagues when, out of the blue, we were asked to move elsewhere because the tables we were sitting at were reserved for a reception. We were assigned a large table in the middle of the cafe. After a few rounds of beer and three servings of bitterballen (a type of Dutch snack), we placed an order for a round of beer and another three servings of bitterballen. The beer was served, but no bitterballen. When I asked where they were, the answer was: "The kitchen is busy, but I'll just ask." It turned out there was a problem with the deep-frying options, and they couldn't serve bitterballen (bitterballen), but they did serve cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, and "vlammetjes" (small, crispy, and skewered meatballs). When we asked how these were heated, no answer was forthcoming. After ordering this alternative, a woman told us there were no bitterballen, cheese sticks, or chicken nuggets, but we could order nachos or cheese cubes. She then backed off after she told us a snack order from the deep-fry had already been placed. We were refused another round of beer because our table had been booked while we were still there, and they asked us to leave. After this, the atmosphere became grim; we felt this wasn't appropriate for a pub, and the staff blamed each other for skipping reservations. Our question about how to reserve a table for other guests while there were still guests at the table was dismissed as a result of the crowds, and they said there were many reservations... reservations? in a pub? So if you ever want to have a beer at Café Thijssen, don't forget to ask how long your time slot is. Before you know it, your time is up and you'll be thirsty again. What a disgrace for an Amsterdam café...

My boyfriend and I come here often and Café Thijssen never disappoints. They serve Jupiler, Jopen & Franziskaner on tap and have a very well rounded menu that is open early until late. We stopped by for some vaasjes and a bite to eat and as always had a lovely time. Thanks to the whole team!

My friends and I visited Café Thijssen in Amsterdam and enjoyed some cocktails. However, when it was time to pay, we noticed extra items added to our bill that we hadn't ordered. Upon questioning, the staff claimed these were separate charges for ingredients, which seemed quite deceptive. This experience felt like a targeted trick towards tourists. Be vigilant and check your bill thoroughly to avoid similar surprises!

Great outdoor place for beers and snacks

Good apple cake but the service is VERY VERY VERYYYY SLOW

It is a very special place, ancient but cozy. And the breakfast is really good!

We managed to snag a table outside on a Friday afternoon for two people and our dog. The service was super friendly, and our order was taken relatively quickly. The apple pie we ordered took a while to arrive along with the drinks, but the roll with the vegan croquette took over 45 minutes to arrive. That was definitely too long for what it was. But both the roll and the pie were very good. All in all, the location on a slightly less busy street is nice, and the food is great, but the wait was a real bummer.

A young guy with orange hair has served us really well. I think his name was swerren or something like that. He was very helpful because he knew where we would go for a nice day out. And I would recommend this to any tourist who wants to have a good first impression of Amsterdam. 10/10

Thijssen used to be my favorite place. In the meantime, hardly any renovation work has been done. Rancid actually. Bitter garnish also of very average to poor quality. Shame. I used to like coming there but not anymore...sorry to say this...

We sat down outside and intended to order using the QR-code but it was nice to find that a member of staff came over without prompting and manually took our order. That kind of initiative is always appreciated. Though the weather was grey - the atmosphere was cosy and comfortably quiet. The cafe is located in a pretty area of the Jordaan, I can only imagine how it looks in summer. Café Thijsen is the perfect way to start off your Amsterdam trip.

Perfect café in the Jordaan next to the Brouwersgracht Canal, friendly buzzy atmosphere, decent food and a good range of beers It is further up the canal away from the centre and station, but all the better for that. Thoroughly enjoyed the visits here and felt very comfortable.

The blonde girl working here is extremely rude. Check your behavior with your customers. Never coming back here again.

Would have loved the place as it is very quirky and cute, off the beaten track. Unfortunately the service was very far away from great, the staff were only attentive with each other and not the guests. Felt like the place was ran by a bunch of kids. Had to wait ages for our very simple food whilst others got theirs before us even though they have ordered long after us. At the point of settling the bill, the girl taking payment was plain rude. Shame as the place would have been nice otherwise.

Our server Thomas was a lovely Amsterdam geezer. Hè recommended a “kopstoot” or headbud! This was not the best drink I have ever had but a great introduction to dutch culture! Overall a great café with amazing vibes and drinks!!

A really nice surprise ! We were freezing and wanted to get something warm to drink. We ended up coming back for some food and drinks later in the evening. Really cool spot, felt more real than many other places. Definitely not a tourist trap, and the prices were great too !

Upon entering, the oldness of the place draws your attention, it is easy to imagine yourself in another century 😄. The service is fast and the food is delicious, at least the apple pie and the coffees we ordered. The items on the menu are available at different times, depending on whether they are breakfast or lunch.

Cute spot for locals in the heart of Jordaan with a super cozy atmosphere. Great food, fair prices, slow but attentive service. A lot of board games available. Definitely recommended !

Extraordinary café in an extraordinary neighborhood, far from the other more popular excesses of this beautiful city...

We came with my husband and my two daughters for snack around 4 p.m. The cafe was crowded. We came back to ask if it was possible to get a table. No one paid any attention to us...I would even say that we were simply ignored! We were about to leave when a table became available. The 4 of us sat down and looked at the map. After 10 minutes, a waitress came to us to tell us in a very unfriendly tone that we couldn't order because there was a reception about to start. I think it would have been kinder and more commercial to warn us from the start...what a welcome! I really don't recommend this place even if I can't say anything about the food. I was very disappointed!!!!

Prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is nice. The options to order were very limited and service felt lacking. There were multiple mistakes with our order and the waitress seemed disinterested. I wouldn't mind going back at all, but I wouldn't actively pursue that either.

It’s located in a pretty area of Jordaan. Prices are bit lower than average. Atmosphere is old Dutch style, very Dutchy cafe. Staff is cordial. Depends what you’re looking for but it’s a good option for a relaxed and casual gathering with friends to spend less than usual and be in Jordaan.

Altijd leuk hier. Sfeer is goed en personeel doet het goed. Veel toeristen maar ook gewoon Amsterdamse inwoners zoals wij. Vraag: zit gezellig vol en iedereen is aan de praat. Waarom altijd die keiharde muziek bij jullie? Echt een reden om niet met vrienden heen te gaan om bij te praten met elkaar. Dit is al jaren zo. .. kroegen zonder muziek komt meer in. Verder al jaren prima.

A cafe that we didn't like. Unkempt place, with a stench that we haven't identified, tables that are quite narrow and close together and finally dirty bathrooms. Sandwiches nothing wow A bottle of water costs €4.50, 10 cents less than a piece of toast…

What is this place 🤷‍♂️ A coffee shop, inside of a cafe inside of a pub. Three lives as one. Very Dutch in a good way. They serve breakfast. The cut-off is at 11. BTW, there are a lot of cut-offs. So many that the waiter was confused. See photos.🤣) many people will take their coffee outside…it sits on a nice prominent corner spot looking over a canal. There are many students on their laptops sucking Wi-fi and probably only buying a single coffee as they squat in a booth for two hours. But, I digress. The vibe is all old school brown cafe . Quite a few beers on tap, basic wine choices and pub food. I had the ever present, bitterballen €6.90 and beef stew over frites €8.50. It is what it sounds like and not bad. As well as a couple IPAs. Quirky and Dutchie, so I shall return. That’s all for now.

Went to Thijssen again after many years. On Saturday with market. Pleasantly busy with neat and very polite staff. Unfortunately, what really bothers me is the chaos that prevails. So unnecessary. You have about 6 to 7 people walking around the cafe and terrace and some people in the kitchen. Well, then you would say that should work for a maximum of 25 tables (inside and outside). But what is missing is guidance… my God, waiting half an hour for an onion soup… that is really way too long. And then 45 minutes on a croquette sandwich 😩😩😩. Then I get disappointed and say something about it. Then everything was on the table within 2 minutes😳. Wtf, am I being fooled? Or is there something completely wrong with the control? I think the latter. Please do something about that and I will be happy to come by again. For now a very meager three stars.

Cozy café, nice terrace, tasty snacks and fun board games

Such a shame because a few years ago I came here very often and it was nice and friendly and a very nice place. So I brought a friend along because I had indicated that this was such a nice place and we could have a quick lunch. Well the drinks took a little longer but were still acceptable, we had already ordered veggie drink balls with the QR code because we were really hungry. Unfortunately, these took more than an hour to arrive, as did the soup, sandwich and 2 croquettes that we ordered upstairs. After asking nicely after almost an hour, it came quite quickly, but the croquettes were fried and were in a bowl on a napkin, which could no longer be used. I certainly didn't feel good, but I still asked for a knife and fork because everything was covered in the filling of the croquette. The sandwich and soup tasted great, but why did it all take an hour and a half for these dishes?! In the end we received an apology from the staff and they also said that it was chaos, but I am really not used to this from this place. I sincerely hope that you can restore this to make it a pleasant place to eat and drink again. Success!
