De Bruine Boon in Stationsdistrict

Lovely evening out with my work and delicious food..

Decided to stop by the Bruine Boon for dessert after getting a recommendation from a acquaintance. Absolutely glad we did! The employees were so friendly, great atmosphere and vibe. We got the apple pie as a dessert and we were simply amazed by how good it tasted and how good the texture of the crust was!

We were in Leiden for a few days, so to speak, on a city break. De Bruine Boon was the closest restaurant to the hotel, so we had a lovely meal there. Once we arrived, we sat on the terrace and enjoyed the November sunshine. The food was great and affordable, and almost all the staff (except one) were very friendly. On the last day, we were done and asked for the bill. Even after paying (including the tip), we still didn't receive a thank you or a "have a nice evening" message. What a disappointment! I understand that you can have a bad day, but still!

Ordering took a very long time, and the server walked past us several times without taking our order. While we were ordering, the server ignored us and even left before I was finished. Staff also loudly sat on the patio in work clothes while people still had to order. The coffee was fine, but the apple pie tasted far from fresh and was even a bit disgusting. It tasted only of sugar, and the app was outdated. The only positive was the sunshine on the patio. Not recommended.

The food was a bit disappointing. The satay came with two small skewers and a small handful of raw vegetables with some peanut sauce. Fries weren't included (as it turned out). They did add two extra fries without asking, and we had to pay an extra 9 euros for them. I found this approach disappointing. When I asked, they said there weren't actually any fries included, so we had to pay extra. Very strange.

Cozy bar. Delicious apple pie!!! It's free on your birthday. Be sure to check your receipt, because it was still on it. It was resolved later, but a bit sloppy.

Sitting outside on the terrace was fine.

One coffee and one slice of apple pie with whipped cream. Almost 10 euros. And the apple pie has also been halved recently. Converted to a whole (medium) pie, that's 50 euros. Ingredients are a maximum of 5 euros. Profit 45 euros. Outrageous!

We had coffee here during a stopover during our rowing race. The coffee was fine. It's interesting, though, that there's only one men's and one women's restroom.

Bad service and unfriendly staff. The food was okay

The service was super friendly. Unfortunately, there were no tables for two left at 6 p.m., but we were allowed to sit at the bar by the window. Friendly service and very good food. Generous portions. We'll definitely be back.

The young man who was assigned to work breakfast on Sunday morning had probably had a rough night. The night before, the waitress had been very friendly and hospitable. The food varied in quality and preparation. Just as the young man delighted us with his singing on Sunday morning, I also say: in the name of Jesus, too bad!

After 50 years, still a pleasant and delicious meal by the water

Extremely poor service. A young man with straight black hair ignored us for 15 minutes before politely approaching us. He offered no apology, just rudely telling us to wait. We left and went elsewhere for a drink and a bite to eat. So expensive and rude. Oh, how the hospitality industry is struggling!

Not recommended. Service: Hospitality and service were lacking. For example: our table was soaking wet, and only after two attempts did we receive a cloth. The drinks, food, and napkins were initially simply placed on the table, with the final result being completely wet. It would have been thoughtful and attentive if this had been done without asking. Furthermore, we were never asked if our food was good, and we were never asked for a second drink. We felt uncared for. Food and drinks: The food arrived very quickly, but that wasn't necessarily a good sign in this case. The food is fine, but overpriced for what you get. Simple McDonald's fries and a meatball sandwich that wasn't presented nicely (we would have preferred it to be tied on the sandwich itself). The red fruit smoothie was incredibly sour (I think because of the cranberries); I actually expected something with strawberries. It's a really nice place to sit, but the service and food could definitely be much better!

A friendly welcome. The bacon at breakfast was burnt. Her response was that she would pass it on?! We were too polite to tell her to return it to the chef. A croissant with butter and jam cost €4.00. 😳

Two coffees, one of which was brown bean coffee. This was served with a foot soak. The coffee was delicious, but quite a small cup for €7.50. €4.50 would be a better price. The waiter was very friendly, though, and he apologized for the foot soak.

Cozy, not too expensive, eatery in a nice location within walking distance of the station towards the city center.

Unfortunately, I had a burnt fried egg. Then the apple pie was burnt too. The waiter's response was, "Yes, I didn't bake that apple pie." Last time I had lunch there.

De Bruine Boon is an atmospheric place for a tasty break during your visit to Leiden.

Disappointing Experience Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience. Despite the restaurant not being busy, the waiter ignored multiple attempts to place our food order. It felt as though tourists weren’t particularly welcome, which made the visit quite uncomfortable. Would not recommend based on our experience. Lovely view!

Avoid! Poor service, food atrocious. Yes, the place was busy, however our server was curt, unhelpful and clearly had too many tables to serve. The food when it arrived, was of poor quality, poorly presented (the chicken didn't look or taste like chicken)

Atmospheric, fairly simple classic café with a nice terrace. Relax and have a drink or something to eat.

Perfect spot for a snack with a nice terrace. We had the curry soup with a fried egg and a krokett and a pulled pork sandwich. Both was very good, service was nice and fast. super 👍

Great little bar and restaurant near Leiden Centraal. The food and drinks were great and it was full of locals which we like. I had hake fish and chips, and my wife had chicken satay. Desserts were apple pie and cheese cake. Friendly , helpful staff. The place has been there for 50 years so it must be doing something right.

During our visit we were not treated hospitably (not even greeted) and to our horror we saw a mouse walking through the cafe, while it was not even quiet. We also saw quite a lot of food scraps on the ground. Reported this, staff responded very nonchalantly. Very unsanitary here!

Fast and good service, friendly staff

My wife and I visited for dinner on Good Friday this year (18-04-2025). We did not have a reservation, but were given a table straight away. We chose to have the "3-course choice menu" for €28.50 (that includes a starter + main course + dessert). We also separately bought drinks. For the starter we both chose to have the fried goat cheese, the main I had the round steak and my wife had the vegan burger. For dessert, I chose the white chocolate cheesecake and my wife had the warm apple pie. You can see photos of both mains and both desserts. The food was tasty, though not the best, as it was not salty enough (my wife particularly felt that with her fries). What brings the rating down is how slow the service was. I joke you not, we spend one hour and a half from sitting down and ordering to actually paying the bill, through no fault of our own! The servers were nice (smiling, friendly, etc.), but the food was sooooo slooooow coming out of the kitchen. And the place was not even fully busy! I dont want to imagine what it is like when they have a full house. Noteworthy is the fact that the toilets are on the first floor, so you dont need to climb stairs to get to them and wash your hands. Overall, while my wife and I do not regret sitting down here for dinner and were pleased there were main vegetarian options that could be chosen from (which is not always the case in other establishments), it is not a restaurant we would repeat due to the length of time we had to spend here.

We have been coming here for 20 years, but unfortunately had a very bad experience at De Bruine Boon tonight. We ordered steak and spare ribs for our 8-year-old son from the children's menu. We pointed this out on the menu (10 euros) and said ketchup instead of mayonnaise. It couldn't be clearer. When paying, the waiter had charged an adult portion of 19.50 euros. I said that I had ordered a child's portion (10 euros) and had also indicated this on the menu. But I served an adult portion and you ate it too. Once again I emphasized that I had not ordered that. I walked to the cash register to pay, of course minus 10 euros. There was another girl who also got involved. I told her that I was too old to cheat anyone, but I really wasn't going to pay the 10 euros. Because I was already very angry, my wife took over and asked for the chef and, to our surprise, she said it was her. She kept insisting that we had to pay the bill because we ate it... I said that I would either pay the bill -10 or not at all. After at least 10 minutes, when other customers also started watching this spectacle with amazement, the so-called real chef decided to accept the -10 bill. I have also owned a hotel and had many customers, but I really cannot understand why you rush something like this so much and give the customer a bad feeling about purchasing an extra piece of spare ribs for 2 euros in a sector that revolves around hospitality. After 20 years a worthless experience and for us: NEVER again Bruine Boon because a pleasant evening was ruined

Wij komen hier al 20 jaar maar vanavond helaas heel slechte ervaring bij de Bruine Boon gehad. Wij hadden biefstuk besteld en voor ons zoontje van 8 uit het kindermenu de spareribs. Wij wezen dit aan op de kaart (10 euro)en zeiden ipv mayonaise ketchup. Duidelijker kan toch niet. Bij de afrekening had de ober een volwassen portie van 19.50 euro in rekening gebracht. Ik zei dat ik een kinderportie had besteld en dit ook had aangewezen op de kaart. Maar ik heb een volwassen geserveerd en u heeft dat ook op gegeten. Nogmaals benadrukte ik dat ik dat niet had besteld. Ik ben naar de kassa gelopen om te betalen uiteraard min 10 euro. Daar was een ander meisje die zich er ook mee ging bemoeien. Ik zei haar dat ik te oud was om iemand te belazeren maar ik echt die 10 euro niet ging betalen. Omdat ikzelf al erg kwaad was nam mijn vrouw het over en vroeg naar de chef waarop zei tot onze verbazing zei dat zij dat was. Ze bleef volhouden dat wij de rekening moesten betalen omdat wij het opgegeten hadden..... Ik zei dat of ik de rekening -10 of helemaal niet zou betalen. Na minstens 10 minuten toen andere klanten ook met verbazing naar dit schouwspel gingen kijken besloot de zgn of echte chef toch maar de -10 rekening te accepteren. Ik heb zelf ook een hotel gehad en vele klanten gehad, maar kan echt niet begrijpen dat je zoiets zo erg op de spits jaagt, de klant een rotgevoel geeft om een stukje spareribs extra van 2 euro inkoop in een sector waar het om gastvrijheid draait. Na 20 jaar een waardeloze ervaring en voor ons :NOOIT meer Bruine Boon want een gezellig avondje was verpest

The order was delivered quickly. The portions are large.

Came here by chance as we were on our way to Keukenhof. Pleasant treatment by the staff. Fast service. There were four of us who had lunch. Two of us took the club sandwich. Bring chips instead of french fries. Would have liked to see the breads a little toasted. It was new for us with boiled egg instead of fried egg. It would have liked to have been a little warmer than it was. The next choice was probably made by whoever chose the pancake. With cheese and ham. The fish platter was so so.

Great place near Leiden CS and the center for lunch or a coffee with a piece of apple pie. I ordered a club sandwich falafel: 4 balls of falafel between 6 toasted whole wheat sandwiches with some hummus and raw vegetables. Now I'm not a foodie, but this was not very tasty or original. Service is also nice. Next time I'll stick to a cup of tea.

Lovely terrace. Unfortunately 4 of the 6 dishes returned to the kitchen; steak strips stone cold and the salad was served without dressing. A bit sloppy.

Delicious fresh apple pie, crispy back. Also with real whipped cream. So not that stuff that runs off your plate like milk after 10 minutes. The last time we ate excellent satay!!

When I often worked in Leiden and surrounding areas. I often used this place as a virtual office and got hooked on their perfect - homemade - apple pie (the whipped cream is also +++). Whenever I'm in the area now, I like to make a detour. The rest is also fine 😊

Staff super rude. Mr with glasses super cheeky. I asked if the door could be closed. It is February after all. His answer was no because it gets too hot. If you don't like it, go sit somewhere else. I asked for the manager. The answer I get. I listened to you. Scandalous. Then I get a burnt egg and the solution was. I take 2 euros from the account. Zero hospitality this.

Op zondagochtend hier samen ontbeten. De thee en croissant met ham en kaas waren okay. De toast droog en het gebakken ei met spek aangebrand en hard. Voor 12,50 per ontbijt mag je wel iets beter je best doen....

Wrong order, didn't do anything about it. Tried gaslighting us that is was the right one, rude. Very long waiting times.

Enjoyed a three-course menu here. Food was good, but if a steak is ordered medium, it must be that way and not well done. Service was good, atmosphere was good and cozy for a café restaurant. Highly recommended for a nice meal in Leiden.

Eten was allemaal erg lekker en ruim voldoende. Bediening is erg vriendelijk en komen met regelmaat vragen om iets te drinken. Het restaurant zelf is ook mooi ingericht. Op het menu staan de reguliere gerechten zoals bij veel restaurants.

Very suitable for snacks. My wife had tomato soup and I had the soup of the day. Both are recommended. The prices are moderate. The service is attentive and friendly.

4.5⭐️ Summer 2024. Pretty little restaurant along the canal. We sat outside with a view of the big windmill. The staff was very nice and courteous. We had the restaurant’s special fish platter which includes smoked salmon, smoked eel, and baby shrimps. Great place for lunch or to grab a coffee.

We stopped here after leaving the train station to walk in Leiden. Service was okay, we wanted to order food, but he forgot to come back to the table. I looked in his direction to take our food order. I had the tippy beef steak baguette and my husband had the meatball baguette. The food was nice and hot. I thought 🤔 my husbands meatball looked fantastic. It was one large meatball in a dish. It tasted nice too! The apple pie was delicious 😋 too, we ordered it the same time as our mains. Definitely recommend having the apple pie. The food is 5 ⭐. Given 4 ⭐ due to service was a little slow.

Menu à 28.5€ entrée plat dessert , les plats copieux et les prix raisonnables. Mention spéciale pour le fish and chips et les ribs très bien cuits. Nous avons pris les desserts du menu à emporter, plus faim après les plats. L’eau du robinet n’était pas payante mais la barquette en plastique pour le doggybag du dessert a été facturée…
