De Groene Olifant is the kind of neighborhood pub where you can easily hang out for a few hours. Whether you come for a drink, an aperitif, lunch, or dinner: the extensive menu featuring local products offers something for everyone. The cozy atmosphere and location make it a truly pleasant place to just relax. You can take a seat on the terrace or at the bar and are quickly served in a friendly manner by the enthusiastic staff. The service is attentive; someone regularly comes by to ask if everything is to your liking and if you would like another drink. On a sunny day, that is certainly not an unnecessary luxury. A minor point of attention is the selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Compared to the rest of the menu, that choice is somewhat limited. That is actually the only downside I noticed, but perhaps I am just becoming a grump. De Groene Olifant makes a good impression beyond the food and drinks as well. The website looks well-maintained, and pub quizzes and live performances are regularly organized. Moreover, the café is located just a stone's throw from Oosterpark, and there are even a few non-smoking spots on the terrace. All in all, this is an atmospheric neighborhood café where hospitality takes center stage. A place where you can easily spend an afternoon or evening. For me, this is therefore rightfully a 5-star establishment. Nothing but praise.

Nice and cozy pub on a lovely corner near the World Museum. It has a fantastic terrace in the sun. The food for our group was not served simultaneously, but that didn't spoil the fun. Very tasty pandan cocktail and reasonable prices. Waitress Maxine made our evening complete with her boundless energy. Highly recommended!

We had to ask for the menu several times, and eventually we just went to get it ourselves. Then we walked over to the staff to place our order, as that was forgotten as well. It was a disappointment that the French toast was served black and badly burnt after a long wait.

De Groene Olifant remains one of my favorite places. The service is quick, attentive, and pleasant, the music is at a nice volume, and the snacks are actually always very good. The flowers on the table also create a nice atmosphere. It is a shame, though, that the menu lists "nuts" when peanuts are served. This has been pointed out before but has not yet been corrected. For four euros, peanuts are fine, but it should match what is on the menu. Otherwise, it is a really nice place that I enjoy coming back to.

Ended up here by chance during a walk through Amsterdam. A bottle of water was placed on the table as standard, along with glasses, by a very friendly lady. The ordered drinks arrived quickly. The food—the toastie and the roast beef sandwich of the week—was amazing. The price is reasonable by Amsterdam standards. The service was quick and very friendly. Also, everyone spoke Dutch, which is no longer the case in many hospitality establishments.

Great location, limited interior space, tables (too) close together, and a lot of noise from other guests/tables. The food is excellent, and the service is super attentive. There are steep steps to reach the tables, making it unsuitable for people with limited mobility/not wheelchair accessible.

I hope this 7-9:30 PM wait never happens again, because I love the Green Elephant. Everything went wrong in the kitchen this Saturday night. The wait staff was charming, but the hefty bill was a disappointment.

It's become incredibly expensive and is now one of the most expensive cafes in Amsterdam. I've been coming here for a long time and always enjoy it, but the new prices are truly exorbitant. 7 euros for a simple ice cream cone, 6.50 for a Duvel, and a simple glass of Grolsch costs you four euros. I had to pay a total of 20 euros for three simple Dutch and Belgian beers. These are prices you pay on Dam Square in the heart of the city center, not in a nice and friendly neighborhood cafe around the corner from your own house.

I've been coming here for a while now and I really enjoy it. It's cozy inside, and outside you can sit in the sunshine. The service is very friendly and always brings a carafe of water in warm weather. I really appreciate that. They have many vegetarian and vegan options. I eat meat, but I appreciate a tasty alternative, like their delicious beet steak. Their Aperol is delicious. I'll skip the Sauvignon Blanc next time, but that's just a personal preference, of course. Otherwise, this place is highly recommended.

Nice café with a good terrace, because among other things you still have the afternoon sun there quite late. Shady location next to the old city gate. Menu does not offer a lot of choice, but what they have is enough. Good wines. Inside it is very atmospheric. Nicely renovated by the new owner.

Nice cozy place with great ambience, I am an occasional costumer and I always enjoy coming back - the only issue can be if you are sitting outside, then you may have to wait a longer to be served during the evening, but that’s not the personnels fault! What happened to this place? I hadn’t been here in a few years. We came here on a whim last week and it’s unrecognizable. It used to be a cozy brown café with a sunny terrace, frequented by locals and a few alternative-looking UvA students. Now it’s a yuppie bar. The tables outside are sleek and businesslike. The clientele consists of a bunch of finance and tech bros and hockey girls (you can also reverse the genders). They’re obnoxious and loud: the kind of crowd you get at the worst places in De Pijp or Zuid, or those awful party bars around the corner on Linnaeusstraat. The food is mediocre and overpriced, and the beer is extremely expensive compared to other bars in this part of town. A case of failed gentrification. Avoidable.

Friendly service, nice food and drink

This bar has a lively young clientele and staff were helpful and attentive. The food was very good, though the portions were on the small size, but perfectly cooked and delicious. We loved the chicken with tarragon, with celeriac gratin. Unfortunately the waiter tripped and spilled a large glass beer all over me, and smashed the glass on my chair, an accident that could have happened to anyone. The staff apologised profusely, and promised to take something off the bill in compensation - however when the bill arrived , the waitress said that the waiter who had promised the discount has no authority to do so - and charged the whole bill even though my fleece and jeans were soaked with beer - so that was disappointing and tainted our experience.

Unfortunately, I had quite a bad experience with this etablissement. I went there a few nights ago for dinner with my friend. First, it took quite some time to get the menu and drinks, but that wasn’t a real problem for us. I ordered a cheeseburger. Once the cheeseburger arrived, I took two bites and something was wrong. I sliced the cheeseburger in half and I saw that it was completely red and raw inside. I am pregnant, and it is fine to eat medium rare, but this was just completely undercooked. Since no waiters were walking around (which seems to be the status quo for this restaurant), I decided to go down with my plate. I explained that the meat was really raw and that I cannot eat that during my pregnancy. She said ‘that is just how we make them, but if you insist, we can overcook it’. I said, well, if they are supposed to be this red, I cannot eat it, and also the idea of overcooking it does not appeal to me. I said nevermind, and that I would just order some bread with garlic butter instead and that she could take the burger (which she did). It took another 15 min to order the bread, and the bread itself was also not that appealing, but okay. At the end of the night, we asked the check and they had still put the burger on there. I said to the waitress that I ‘returned’ the burger and ahead said she would check it. It took her 15-20 min to come back, because apparently she had a discussion with her shiftmanager on the burger. She said I was lucky and that she managed to get 50% off for me. I said that that was quite weird, since I did not eat te burger and they did not specify in the menu or with the ordering that the burger only comes cooked raw. She then said that I did eat those initial two bites on which I replied that those initial bites where what made me slice the burger to see if the meat was undercooked in the first place. Then she said that since I am the one that is pregnant, it is my responsibility to ask how raw the meat is. I replied that I assumed, since nobody asked me how I would like the burger that the default would be medium rare and not rare as in almost like tartare. She said she would report back the feedback, but that this was all she could do for me. I was baffled. Like, I did not think it the most effective business decision, to let me still pay €9,95 for a burger I did not eat. Like, it is €9,95, but you let your waiters miss out on tip over the whole check and the fact that I will never return or will recommend this place to anyone and put a negative review online. A very attractively decorated café with a good kitchen. The service is perfect. Despite the crowds and our deadline, we managed to serve drinks and food on time. You will quickly feel at home there.

Food is fine for a cafe - tasty fries with the beyond meat burger and a wide choice of beers. Atmosphere is messy, busy, somewhat loud. But that is allowed in a cafe, but you have to prepare for it. Service is substandard. Little "attention" upstairs, waiting for even a dessert menu and then walking downstairs to order. And not getting the requested honey with the mint tea - that's just a shame, frustrating and kind of ruins the experience. Also an uncomfortable feeling when not giving a tip - I always like to do that, but it really wasn't deserved.

I strongly urge this establishment to invest in proper training for their staff on racial prejudice. Last night, while I was having drinks on the terrace, a white, blond Dutch waiter singled me out, approaching me directly to accuse me of smoking weed—something that isn’t allowed on their premises. As a non-smoker, and one of the few people on the terrace who wasn’t smoking, I found this accusation strange. Of course, I was the only non-white in the terrace at that moment. The actual person smoking weed was a white individual, whom the waiter didn’t even seem to notice, but he actually had to come up and tell her. After discussing this with friends—whom arent white or Dutch—it became clear that this wasn’t an isolated incident. Many of them have experienced similarly biased treatment from the staff. While the service here may generally be fine, their staff clearly lacks the necessary training to treat people with equal respect, regardless of their race. More people need to speak out and hold them accountable for this ongoing issue.

Such a shame that smoking is still allowed on the terrace. When will you do something about that?

Cozy cafe, friendly service, but you would be better off eating somewhere else. Had dinner on a Saturday evening with terrace weather. Had to wait a very long time for the food even though it was already later and not much was eaten. After an hour of waiting, the waitress came to tell us that something was missing and whether we wanted another vegetable instead. We got the "green salad" on the house. We ordered ribeye but were not asked how we wanted it cooked. Then one of the ribeyes was very fatty and way overcooked. The fries were way too salty and fried for too long and the salad (some lettuce leaves) were swimming in dressing. The scant vegetables were also far too salty. I did receive a new ribeye, again way too salty and my friend had now finished eating. I was done with it then too. Nice terrace, but I will definitely never eat there again.

My wife, daughter and I had a very bad experience with this restaurant and would not recommend it. We ordered the Dubbel Doel cheeseburger twice for €18.50 per citizen, and once for my wife the trout starter. The citizens were served pretty quickly, but were raw on the inside, see the picture I attached, instead of the trout, you got it us a kale, basically turned on, the kale was tough and still had large hard pieces of stalk, plus the kale was served in a damaged plate, the fairly young kitchen staff, recognizable by their aprons, often sat on the terrace with them Guests and smoked, the evening was ruined, we paid €49.50, we weren't charged for the 2 rude citizens, once and never again.

We came in enthusiastically, first I said "good afternoon" to the blond man who blinked slightly with his eye, but unfortunately no response. Then my guest said hello, no fuss either, even though there was certainly eye contact. Regardless of the fact that you should welcome your guests. I was just about done with it so we went there for a drink. Especially because it couldn't contain a smile or some kindness. Terrace 7 people and inside 2, so it's not that we weren't seen. Anyway, ordered it myself and left quickly. May 2, 2024 Tried again and the service was much better this time and the staff was friendly (that's why 1 star for service instead of no star and 2 stars for general). June 22, 2024 Went by again, but the friendliness of the lady who worked on the terrace was lacking. The order seemed to irritate her. You don't have to laugh for me, but don't sit there looking angry/grumpy at me while I place my order. It's over for me now. I'm used to a lot of service, but this is just not good. Won't encourage friends to go here either, because the staff is too fickle when it comes to service/friendliness and you just don't want that. Fortunately, there are plenty of catering places.

All good, but I would consider serving the rib-eye with pepper sauce differently: the pepper sauce is too dominant, so serve it separately so that you can enjoy the meat with just ground pepper and coarse salt.

Great little bar with a small but excellent food selection. We had the bitterballen, oysters, artichoke, great tartare and some delicious bread. The have a good beer and wine selection as well. Service is nice and the terrace very chill. It was warm so we sat outside. But inside looks quite nice as well.

A nice lunch in a nice tent. It is nicely decorated with an authentic atmosphere. The service was a bit slow even though it wasn't busy, but friendly. The bread they serve is very tasty, coffee was good too, and the free tap water was appreciated. The map is also original. I wasn't blown away by the food, but it was fine! Toilets also very neat. I would come back again.
