Yesterday we celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary at De Walvis. It is a beautiful location and both the food and the service were top-notch. Highly recommended.

We loved the food and the atmosphere. If you come to Zaanse Schans, you absolutely must have lunch here. Unfortunately, you can't sit by the lake without a reservation. They also don't let you in once it's full.

Whilst at Zaanse Schans museum village we needed a sit down lunch in the shade and this was perfect. My husband had a Dutch Stew and a chocolate dessert and I had the goats cheese salad and creme brulee, all of which were excellent.

The burger was a bit hard, and the service was a little slow, but given how busy it was, that's understandable. The atmosphere was very good, with a beautiful view, despite the wind.

Terrible service and an incredibly disappointing experience! I have now been told twice by the same male waiter that I couldn’t have a table near the outside window. Once should have been more than enough — being told a second time was completely unnecessary and extremely rude. But that wasn’t even the worst of it. We waited TWO HOURS for chips! Two hours! We were genuinely at the point of getting up and walking out. Meanwhile, we watched other tables arrive, order and receive their food while we were still waiting. And what made it even worse? Not even an apology, discount, compensation or any genuine attempt to make things right. We were simply brushed off as though keeping customers waiting for two hours was perfectly acceptable. This is absolutely unacceptable service, particularly for a venue sitting in such a prime tourist location. You have a fantastic opportunity to provide visitors with a great experience, yet unfortunately ours was the complete opposite. I would never recommend this place and certainly won’t be returning. What a shame — the location deserves so much better.

Beautiful view, Excellent food I recommend it

We stopped for lunch in the village of Zanse Schans. The place looks like a Dutch country house, very quaint; the waiter (Italian) was very courteous. Luckily, there was room inside (it was raining), but there are plenty of outdoor tables on the terrace overlooking the canal, and we went right in. I ordered a beef stew; my wife had bruschetta with salmon slices; my daughter had a sandwich: everything was delicious; there's a wide variety of beers brewed by them. With beer, water, and Coke, it cost €75.

My child ordered a burger that looked very thick. He had eaten a third of it when I saw that the burger was raw, and not just a small piece, but at least two-thirds of the burger. The waiter said that burgers are always cooked that way, even though that is completely wrong. He said it wasn't a problem because we hadn't mentioned it immediately; we aren't getting a new burger or a discount. Don't go there!!!!!!!!

The restaurant is very nice, the staff are lovely, and the food is good, although I found it a bit pricey. I came early for lunch, so it wasn't very busy. Thank you for your hospitality 😊

Honestly had one of the best lunches here ever. We had the sea bass and the vegan burger. The fish was so fresh and juicy and the red beet burger had a really unique taste that really stood out and i really liked. For dessert we had the tiramisu matcha and the chocolate moelleux. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water again :D And the staff was so attentive and friendly, we felt really seen. They took great care of everyone. A lot of reviews said that the food took a lot of time but that was definitely not the case for us. Although it was very busy everything came quick. The staff member who served us was pleasant. However, our order wasn’t prepared as requested despite clear instructions (burger with only meat, cheese, and bun). The burger and fries were of very poor quality—probably the worst I’ve ever had. We also ordered the tiramisu, which was disappointing as well. The only thing we really enjoyed was the local Zaanse mustard eel soup.

We had a meal here and the location is absolutely beautiful. Sitting on the terrace right by the water offers a wonderful, relaxing view of the area. However, the food was just average for the price, and overall it is quite expensive. You are definitely paying for the premium view rather than the culinary experience. Great for a drink and the scenery.

The officer deceived us at the entrance and said that there was no food in the restaurant so that we could buy French fries at their stall next to the cafe. In the end, we ate potatoes, went in for a beer, and it turned out that the food was served there, and the officer just tricked us to raise the proceeds of their stall.

We took a Yellow Bike Tour to Zaanse Schans. Our tour guide told us this was the best restaurant there. We had a fabulous lunch there! The restaurant sits on the water offering a beautiful view. The good was delicious. Our group enjoyed Cubans, the vegetarian ravioli and the parmesan truffle fries. We also enjoyed the local Hoop beer! I highly recommend this restaurant for it's delicious food and beautiful view.

Had some snack only but the service and views were amazing

Yesterday we had High Tea with 10 people, 2 of whom were meat-free and 1 lactose-free. It was very well organized, with plenty of fresh ginger and mint. The service was also very friendly, and we had a lovely time sitting on the terrace by the Zaan. Highly recommended!

The location is certainly charming, even if it's become a bit touristy. However, this restaurant, along with the mills, is worth a visit. The place is beautiful, the food is excellent, and there's a breathtaking view of the river and the mills. The added bonus, however, is the staff, consisting of two incredibly professional Italians. Valerio in particular, despite a scorchingly hot day—one that I fear will go down in history—managed to provide us with moments we'll treasure forever.

Everything about this place is wonderful 👍🏻: the food, the atmosphere, and the service. We were lucky to get there during off-peak hour, so everything was perfect. We highly recommend it. Had a delicious meal on the terrace, where you sit in a stunning location by the Zaan with a view of the Zaanse Schans. The food was incredibly good and the accompanying wines were also very good. Very friendly service. Highly recommended.

I regularly have lunch with my business associates at De Walvis, preferably in good weather. There is no terrace in the Zaanstreek with a more beautiful view, and the food is fine and reasonably priced.

I ordered a hamburger that was great... English style. My wife went for the fish and chips and loved it too. Great option with great service.

Great place for lunch after visiting Zaanse Schans - we chose this place for the views and vegan options - it did not disappoint. We ordered a beetroot burger and avocado sandwich - and both were delicious! We sat outside on the deck overlooking the water - and it was a great lunch! The service was a bit slow due to an event inside - but they were super friendly and accommodating! Great place!

Terrible place : the food is pretty bad, there are a lot of flies that fall in your food and the waiters are rude, bored and unorganized (you wait long time for your meal and they even ask you to go find yourself the number of your table to pay the bill). Very expensive for such mediocre place

The food was via 'Social Deal' and it was good; I had bruschetta, mustard soup, sea bass, and tiramisu. The waitstaff and service were fine. The atmosphere, particularly due to the acoustics, was very poor. I advise the restaurant to seek advice on this and, for example, install acoustic panels or fabrics on the ceiling so that people can talk normally at the table.

From the front, you can't tell that the restaurant has a lovely terrace overlooking the canal. The food was excellent! The price was perfect. The staff was wonderfully friendly, kind, and helpful. This restaurant is highly recommended!

Lovely place to rest after a long walk to see the windmills. The restaurant is slightly tight in space if you are traveling with baby strollers but still able to accommodate. Service staffs was really nice to help with the stroller due to the tight space. Food and ambience was great!

We arrived at 4pm but was refused at reception for any food. Only drink allowed. But Google shows closed at 5. Not justifying for service at sightseeing attractions. Pretty disappointed not recommended.

Excellent service. For our parents' 50th wedding anniversary, we were given a beautiful, secluded, and atmospheric room where we could sit quietly. Our wishes were well considered during the reservation process. We were served Cava and non-alcoholic sparkling wine beforehand. The à la carte lunch was good, but nothing special. The service was very friendly and flexible. We were even allowed to take a look at the hall where our parents held their party 50 years ago.

Stunning location, excellent service and delicious food

Since we didn't have a reservation, we waited about 20 minutes before being seated. Is it just my imagination, or did it taste better a few years ago? The group of women at the table behind us were so loud it was difficult to have a conversation.

Historic and well-maintained restaurant. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking. The staff is friendly and professional. Local dishes (soups, meatballs, cured meats and cheeses) and international dishes (burgers and steaks) are available. Vegetarian options are also available (fish and vegetable options are available).

Almost entirely authentic restaurant. A charming atmosphere and especially lovely hosts. The chairs are comfortable and the space is well-designed. They communicated well and honestly about allergens, and we were given a delicious alternative dish. We had a high tea for six people. Mustard soup is highly recommended. Unfortunately, they didn't offer scones and clothed cream.

We ordered: Dutch beef stew 9/10(must try 💯 ) Dutch lunch plate 8/10(I got myself smoked salmon, mustard soup and veg croquette-do give them a try it was really good!) Truffle fries 10/10 💯 Dutch snack platter 7.5/10. The service is good, they are friendly and even recommended their local beer~ Hoof draft beer. Stomach is full and will come back again if I ever visit here again in summer. Cheers!🍻

We ate there two days ago... the service was amazing!! I enjoyed fries and fish, and my kids had a delicious beef burger. It's an excellent place, and the bar area is incredible with its thoughtful touches.

Staff is disrespectful to customers trying to take order instead of clean the table first even after mentioning it she refuses it and still trying to take order instead. I guess they don’t care about customers because they only restaurant near by.

We ate here with our company staff (42 people). It was perfectly organized. We were served with a smile, so the service was excellent, and everyone enjoyed the food. They also took allergies into account, so we didn't have to worry about that. Definitely recommended!

I called for lunch, but the app already said lunch was closed. The call went off; wait, wait, wait. After about 5 minutes, I hung up. The next day I was able to make a reservation through the app. A great lunch! Delicious, friendly service, and a reasonable price.

Although the steak wasn't quite cooked, it was excellent considering it's a prime tourist destination. The bearded man, presumably the manager, was very friendly. It's hard to find a better place for a decent meal at a reasonable price in a tourist area. And from what I could tell, there were quite a few locals there. Main dishes range from €20 to €30. Choose a bottle of wine: €29 or €49. Starters are around €10. The tomato soup isn't pictured, but it was delicious. This is a great deal for a European tour.

Excellent place!! We ate divinely!! The guy who served us, Italian like us, gave us lots of recommendations and was really helpful. Here, in addition to good food, you can also find authentic Italian coffee!! They have many vegan and vegetarian options. I absolutely recommend it!!

We had a family dinner at this restaurant with 36 guests. The welcome was friendly and the service was excellent. We had pre-arranged a menu, and it was delicious. They also provided a projector and screen. We, and our guests, were all very pleased with the location and the food.

⭐☆☆☆☆ We've rarely been so disappointed. The wine tasted like it had been open for days—bitter, sour, just plain awful. And then the chicken arrived... raw inside. That's not only unappetizing, but also dangerous. When I pointed it out, the waiter looked at me as if I was the problem. No apology, no solution. You don't feel taken seriously at all as a guest. What a sad experience; I went home with a stomachache and frustration.

We had a wonderful evening with a well-prepared and delicious menu. It was an unforgettable memory for my mother, who was celebrating her 90th birthday! The only minor drawback: there's no rosé beer on the drinks menu (neither alcoholic nor non-alcoholic), and the non-alcoholic red wine wasn't a good alternative.

The more expensive restaurant at the Zaanse Schans. But it's still a fun place to enjoy a drink and a small snack along the Zaan River.

High Tea for 8 people. The food was well-prepared. The tea bags were only flavored, not black. It's helpful to serve several plates with a mix of savory and sweet treats.
