De Nachtwacht in Grachtengordel-Zuid

We weren't seated right away, even though there were seats, but they hadn't cleared them. It was 8:00 PM and all the tables were reserved. Heh-heh, another couple arrived after us. Now about the food. The lobster bisque was simply amazing! The corpaccio started with mayonnaise, but we asked for it with olive oil. It felt like everything was made separately: the meat, the Parmesan, the arugula, and the olive oil, the pine nuts were delicious. And now the main thing: the ribeye and potatoes with a creamy (mayonnaise) garlic sauce. The ribeye was a C, but the potatoes weren't even served with mayonnaise. A purely tourist restaurant, like in Rome!!!

If you're looking for a quiet, intimate restaurant to enjoy a good steak, look elsewhere. You'll be treated to Mariah Carey playing in the background and your steak served rare when you ordered it medium-rare.

Recommend the beef tartare, prawns, and the mixed grill. I ordered the XL ribeye steak and it was cold. We didn’t send it back, but we did tell the waiter after we finished so they’d have the feedback. We honestly weren’t sure if it was meant to be that way. Since it was a birthday dinner we ordered dessert. The brownie with ice cream was okay but nothing special. Service was friendly and we still had a nice evening overall, but the experience would have been much better if the steak had simply been hot. For the price… there are other places where I’d rather spend my money because the food is more consistent. Ratings: Beef tartare: 7/10 Prawns: 9/10 Snails: 6/10 Ribeye: 6/10 (could’ve been 9+ if it was hot) Mixed grill: 8/10 (chicken & spareribs better than the lamb chops) Brownie: 4/10

Amazing place, the waiter with Colombian and Egyptian heritage was super friendly and gave us great advice on the food, the music was incredible and the food was very good, we will repeat on our stay.

Last visited: November 2025 There are not many places where the bar is big enough to eat at. Fantastic ribs, quality and a very good portion. Check the pics out.

My new favourite restaurant in Amsterdam! I loved it so much I went two days in a row because the food was that good. The surf and turf with a jacket potato was amazing, and the lady steak the next day was just as delicious. Our waitress was lovely and gave us great service. On our second visit we didn't have a reservation and were told there were no tables, but our waitress from the night before recognised us and kindly invited us in. Thanks to her we enjoyed another fantastic meal. We'll definitely be back every time we're in Amsterdam!

The salmon, steaks, sauces and Jacket potatoes from here are superb! It can be a bit loud on weekends and you might have to sit at the bar but you can’t miss the food!

Our first evening in Amsterdam we chose De Nachtwacht for dinner. There was a short wait so we decided to sit at the bar. The service was amazing and the food was even better! Definitely a great start to our vacation!

We've had a nice evening there, but some small details could be criticized: not all sides came at one time, which was confusing. And a shot of Jägermeister costs 5,80?? come on. But the meat was great and the fries, too. Can recommend!

This place is so overrated it’s actually funny. They messed up our order (or don’t know the difference between raw and medium—the steak was mooing), the sauces were mid (at best). Cocktails—forgettable. Have a little respect for customers to get them at least something good for the price they’re paying. Also, a deposit for a sit at the bar?? Be serious. The whole vibe screams “we think we’re fancy” but the food, drinks and the whole experience say otherwise. Save your money, go literally anywhere else.

Lovely cafe on the beautiful Rembrandt Square

We were looking for a place to eat steak and found this one. We ordered the XL rib eye, a side of fries, and a burrata. The meat was delicious, cooked to perfection. The waiter Dani, who surprisingly spoke Spanish, was fantastic. Very friendly and approachable. We'll be back next time!

Restaurant de Nachtwacht seems unchanged, just like in the old days. One tip that hasn't changed is the opening hours. The kitchen closes much earlier than it used to, with 9:30 PM already feeling a bit late.

I wish I can say this place was a good experience for me. However, for a steakhouse to get our steak order wrong twice is quite unacceptable. We ordered the medium rare ribeye with ribs combo, and received one fully well done steak the first time, and the second time a barely seared rare steak (the insides were cold). They sent the rare steak back to cook more but it was still bad as shown in the pictures, the outside of the steak was charred to the point where every bite was bitter. I really didn’t want to tell them but the waiters could tell something was wrong so we just told them the truth. The table next to us also didn’t seem to have a great experience as well because they also sent back their undercooked steaks. To add to this, we also just didn’t really have the best service. We were seated right behind the service counter and when asking to switch spots despite the many free tables available we were flat out ignored. The waiters kept reaching over me to get menus and wine lists and it just felt like it wasn’t the best spot to put a table. This place might be good on a good day but with inexperienced staff not knowing these common restaurant curtesies and just mediocre food I don’t think I can recommend this place in good faith. We ended up getting a discount on the steak but still paid almost €40 for a bad experience.

Steak looks a bit like a Scapino sneaker. Shrimp have been dead for over six months. In short, are you a culinary enthusiast and do you love good food? Look further!

The steaks leverage the sauces to carry the meal. They are cooked exceptionally though.

The food is very tasty. Only: The interior is very nice, but the exterior is a bit too cheap for the type of food and the restaurant.

We ordered some steaks and they arrived cold, a big mistake for such a succulent dish.

The friendly staff will discuss the menu with you, even revealing secrets to the unique tastes. We enjoyed quality grass fed beef with grilled vegetables and special sauces. Great fries and excellent wine. Highly recommend, and don't forget to get a nice espresso at the end of your meal!

Not great, the food isn't good for the price. The staff isn't at all concerned with the guests, but are busy drinking (shots) in plain sight. Not great... they also made a mistake on the bill. There should be more oversight of the staff.

One of my favourite restaurants in Amsterdam. Great chargrilled steak, escargots in garlic butter sauce was simply delicious. Beautiful restaurant in the busy Rembrandt square, easy to get to, great service too.

Hermosa comida, ENORME papa chaqueta y generosa porción de hermosas costillas, la carne se derritió en su boca y se cayó del hueso. La comida tiene un precio razonable, sin embargo lamentablemente decepcionado por el mal Servicio. Pedí una botella grande de agua - se trajo una pequeña. El camarero olvidó la orden de mi compañero, así que tuve que volver para comprobarlo. Camarero parecía irritado por tener que esperar a que mi pareja decidiera lo que quería después de inicialmente incluso echarlo de menos por completo e irse (solo éramos 4 así que ni siquiera un grupo grande). No nos preguntaron si queríamos más bebidas. El camarero trajo la cuenta sin siquiera preguntarnos si queríamos ver el menú de postres, no hace falta decir que no nos molestamos y nos fuimos a otro lugar! No me apresuraría a regresar personalmente.

Fantastic meal our last night in Amsterdam. French onion soup was great, meat cooked beautifully and very generous portions. Being from the NYC area, we felt it was great value for the money.

We were able to enter for dinner without a reservation. The staff were very kind and provided pleasant service. I forgot to take a photo, but the hot shrimp soup was delicious. The seating is half on the open terrace, and it was a bit noisy for conversation as it was lively, but the atmosphere was good.

People really need to reevaluate their reviews. A place with such a high rating should at least have staff who are passionate about their work, instead of sneaking food in the kitchen between orders. The waiter forgot to deduct the 20€ reservation fee we had already paid online. The meat doesn’t come with fries included, nor even a small salad. For such expensive service, you’d expect good customer service, I find it a bit exaggerated and disappointing. The meat itself is excellent, delicious even, but the reviews are way too hyped compared to the reality of the place and the young staff. They just seem to want tips without actually doing much.

The restaurant is placed perfectly with view to a beautiful busy plaza. The table and chair of the terrasse are cheap and not comfortable. The meat we ordered was really good and price well for the location. The service was slow and not good.

It’s extremely busy place. Make sure to get reservations. The food was 5 star. The service 4 star. Two of us split the surf and turf. We also ordered baked potatoes. It was very filling. I was disappointed with the baby Pepsi’s they offer. Extremely small soda servings. No biggie though, I ordered a second to get thru dinner.

The food quality is very nice. The soup is flavorful but a bit too salty for me. I would definitely recommend all the meat. Also nice and fast service.

The steak itself was not bad, the problem is that our steak came so cold that I had to ask the server to reheat it again. Still, it did not make any difference. The service is also left to be desired, not a single server came to us to ask how things are doind, or how’s the food or do you need something. Very poor service that needs improvement.

We actually wanted to spend a nice evening at De Nachtwacht – we thought: a nice dinner, a good atmosphere… well, unfortunately, we only got as far as the door. The receptionist kindly explained to us that they weren't accepting any guests at the moment. Okay, it can happen sometimes – we thought. But now we've been sitting in the restaurant across the street for over an hour… watching as De Nachtwacht comfortably remains half-empty. No hustle and bustle, no large gatherings, no new guests – just… empty. It's starting to feel a bit like we're in a bad sketch: "Are you waiting for Godot or something?" Honestly, it's a shame – not because of the food, which we never got to try, but because of the strange "for the chosen few only" atmosphere. Conclusion: Maybe next time we try, we won't just be seen through the window. 😉

An evening like a nightmare – and the end of all my hope I'm not writing these words with anger. Not with resentment. I'm writing them with a broken heart. Amsterdam – our last night. The city shone, our eyes too. Hand in hand, we walked through the streets, filled with love, anticipation, that special feeling: We're about to eat something truly delicious. A picture-perfect ending. We entered "De Nachtwacht" with hope. We left in ruins. Broken. Disappointed. Empty inside. Two steaks, medium rare – that was all we wanted. But what was served to us wasn't a meal. It was a memorial. A charred monument to human indifference. Cold inside, burned outside, nothing but desolation in between. Every bite was like a punch in the stomach. Tough as regret. Bitter as life's crises. I chewed—not on meat, but on the remnants of my last hope. I looked at my friend. He tried to smile. But there was darkness in his eyes. He was fighting. We both were fighting. Against the taste. Against the silence. Against the pain. But it was getting worse. I went to the bathroom. I shouldn't have. The smell. The dirt. And that light—oh God, that light. A pale, flickering illusory existence, as if even the lightbulb had given up hope. I couldn't see anything. NOTHING. Not myself. Not the toilet paper. Not if I was still dignified. I stood there, half bent over, half praying— and asked myself: What was all this for? Back at the table—no one. No question, no smile, no apology. Just a QR code, silent as a tombstone. Pay. Go. Go away. We paid. Not with money. But with our lives. With emotions. With the last joy of that evening. As we walked out, it wasn't raining – but it was pouring in our hearts. Heavy drops of disappointment, sadness, and the endless wish that none of this had ever happened. What remained? A charred taste on our tongues. A story we don't want to tell anyone. And the feeling that even the light of Amsterdam went out for us in that moment. Don't go there. Better go home. Or into the forest. Or nowhere. But don't go to "De Nachtwacht." Because more than just your hunger dies there. A piece of yourself dies there.

I saw several rats under the outdoor tables also there was a dead bird under one of the tables. This is unacceptable and dangerous for health. Avoid this place.

We had a delicious meal! The starters were fresh and well-seasoned, especially the carpaccio and tartare. For our main course, we had steak, which was cooked perfectly medium rare. The sauces were also very tasty. Friendly and efficient service completed the experience. Definitely a place we'd love to return to!

We had a very good table looking at the circle but the food was mediocre and not worth the money. Unfortunately the service was not good, neither.

Vi havde booket bord og måtte betale 10 euro i depositum pr. person. Havde derfor store forventninger til restauranten. Besøget startede fint med bestilling og høfligt personale, men efter , at vi havde fået serveret vores hovedret, var vi "luft". Ingen spurgte om maden var tilfredsstillende. Jeg havde bestilt en steak, der skulle steges medium, men fik en bøf, der var medium rare. Jeg spiste den af samme grund ikke op. Det var min fejl, at jeg ikke bad om at få bøffen stegt mere, men det gjorde jeg desværre ikke. Da tjeneren kom for at hente min tallerken kunne hun jo se, at jeg kun havde spist en lille del af min steak og jeg sagde nu, at jeg havde bedt om en medium steak, hvilket jeg ikke havde fået. Til dette svarede hun "det er medium her og man kan altid bede om at få den længere på grillen " Uforskammet opførsel!!! Hun burde efter min mening have sagt " Det er jeg ked af. Du skulle have gjort opmærksom på det, så kunne vi have stegt den lidt mere". Vi forlod restauranten med en følelse at at blive talt ned til og var på INGEN måde tilfredse. Stedet er IKKE billigt, men lever på ingen måde op til god service!!! Vi kommer her ALDRIG igen.

Don't waste your money on overpriced average food. Not worth the money

I had hands down the best service from one of the waitresses Maria she was super friendly and came to check on me regularly. What an angel! I am definitely coming back to get served here again!! The wine Maria recommended was delectable and was a perfect choice for the afternoon.

It was our first time there and we were more than satisfied. The food was really great and delicious. The staff were super friendly and there was a great atmosphere in the restaurant. We will definitely come back when we are in Amsterdam again. We have eaten in many different restaurants in the city and this was by far the best.

The food was great! Steak and chicken were excellent, juicy and tender. The sauces complimented the food. They were short a few servers so a bit of a wait and few items did not make it to the table, but we ordered too much food so was perfect with less. We will be back.

Beautiful place in the center, next to many pubs and a beautiful square. Service very nice and polite but not intrusive and that is appreciated. Food very expensive, but the best. Steaks perfectly fried, meat delicious. Sauces very good, as well as grilled vegetables or salad. I highly recommend, everyone must experience this delicious cuisine.

Ordered steak I indicated medium well waitress asked twice rare? I said no I don't want raw meat, but medium well. I got a well done steak. Indicated it and got another, but rare. I indicated again that I had asked for medium well. Good steak back on the grill and was also cut into it again still rare. I ate around the raw meat. Didn't feel like saying anything about it! Will I come back here? Unfortunately not. It seemed like they only know rare? The atmosphere was nice and the dishes expensive.

Great place. Walked in last night and we could eat at the bar. Excellent service from bartender Corne who, by the way, knows the trade of upselling very well :-). We shared two starters and ate the flat iron steak on the advice of the bartender - off the menu. Unfortunately, the baked potato was sold out, but we also ate a bit later in the evening. Was great! The only downside is that Pepsi is served and not Coca-Cola. But hey, not everything can be perfect. Update Sunday 15 June 2025: We ate here again tonight, the service was terrible! We made a reservation on the terrace with a group of eight people. Our starters were on the table within ten minutes, but we had to wait more than an hour for the main course. And it wasn't really busy. Not once did anyone come to ask if we wanted something else to drink, we had to ask for it ourselves every time. Empty plates or glasses were not cleared. After several good experiences, tonight was just bad.

I had their 500g ribeye. It was just okay. Place is very crowded, had a nice outdoor dining.

Food was really delicious, the place looks nice, it was not crowded when I went there in the afternoon. Service was not for my liking, as I had to wait to order something. I can say good things about the meat, because it was really medium and tasty enough for what I like. Sauces also delicious.

Steak was spot on, really well done. Grilled vegetables were a nice match. Limited wine list but chosen bottle was decent. Don’t bother with desserts though. Was recommended the brownie and it was very mediocre. 2 stars for the desserts.

Disappointing Experience – Not Worth the Price I’ve eaten at De Nachtwacht twice now, and both times have been underwhelming. The service is chaotic, orders were mixed up, extremely slow, and the food arrived cold. For €100 per person, I expected far better. The food itself is very basic and doesn’t justify the high price point. The only redeeming feature is the drinks, they are good, but at €15 per cocktail, even that feels overpriced. There are much better places in Amsterdam to spend your money.

An expensive place, not kosher, the food is very tasty. And of all the restaurants around Rembrandtplein, it is the best in our opinion.

Great place to have steak outdoors

This place is a trap. The food isn’t worth the price. Expensive spareribs but doesn’t even include any sides such as fries or side salad. They make you pay for everything. The waitress asked my sister to choose the sauce for her steak and turned out at the end we had to pay 5 euro for just a bit of sauce on the steak. The most terrible thing was my spareribs. I had never eaten ribs that sweet! The worst ribs ever! It was like they only use sugar to marinate it. Very dry and sweet! Doesn’t recommend you to come here

Although we were sited by the bar, staff was friendly and the food was delicious. We took onion soup and ribs with steak. Great ! It is the place worth visit.

I had a very strange and disappointing experience at this restaurant. Right after we sat down, the waiter told us there are mice near the wall by our table and that one might come out at any moment. He asked if we were afraid of mice, as if this was a normal thing to mention in a restaurant. Honestly, I was shocked. This is not just unprofessional, it’s unacceptable for any place that serves food. It made us seriously question the restaurant’s hygiene and overall standards. We left immediately. I truly hope the management takes this seriously, because this is not something any customer should ever have to hear.

This was our first meal in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, it was pretty disappointing. We ordered a ribeye and salmon. The ribeye arrived raw and was sent back for more cooking. Neither had much flavor and was overall underwhelming. We didn't finish our entrees, but paid an expensive bill. Maybe dinner service is more impressive than lunch?

My first time visiting the restaurant, and it was an excellent experience in every way. I ordered , and it was incredibly tender and melted in my mouth – truly a premium choice. The lady who served me was extremely polite and professional, helping me choose with a calm and friendly attitude. I highly recommend asking for her if you visit – she genuinely added a special touch to the whole experience

I had the worst experience here. The older lady working there was extremely rude. When we spoke in English, she started shouting and forced some incomprehensible store rules on us. Tourists should definitely avoid this place. The food wasn’t good either. It was just a croquette stuffed in plain bread — nothing special at all.

Gran restaurante! La comida, el vino, el café con leche y el postre eran excelentes. Quien está cocinando los filetes en la cocina sabe cómo hacerlo bien! La carne era fabulosa (la hija del carnicero hablando aquí). Incluso las patatas fritas eran geniales. Uno de los mejores cafés con leche que he tomado en la ciudad. Usted debe hacer una reserva (hay una pequeña tarifa) ya que las mesas se llenaban rápido cuando estuvimos allí.

Super steakhouse right in the middle of Amsterdam. Food, wine & latte were all excellent. We made an advance reservation for our trip and everything was right on schedule. Highly recommend this restaurant.

This is a modern steakhouse in the heart of Amsterdam.

We went to the reviews, the steaks and mixed grill are worse than in any unrated restaurant, the pepper sauce is just flour and pepper crumbs, the baked potatoes with the meat are overheated and tasteless, the carpaccio is not outstanding, the frog legs stew is not tasty, don’t waste your time, find another restaurant.

Excellent restaurant considering that Dutch cuisine is not exactly the best. The bread with garlic butter was fantastic, as were the scampi and salmon.

Wir haben wunderbares Filetsteak und Ribeye Steak auf den Punkt gegart gegessen. Ein wahrer Traum. Tolles entspanntes freundliches Personal. Einfach eine rund um wohlfühl Oase. Kann man nur empfehlen. Unser Wein war ebenfalls hervorragend. Danke für diesen wunderbaren Abend! Absolute Empfehlung!

Very good steaks and nice service

Everything started very well, and the atmosphere was great. The waitress then took all the drinks and food (only two people) without writing it down. Later, the wrong steak and wrong side dishes arrived. That's fine, it can happen, although very annoying. But then it took over 30 minutes for a new steak to arrive. We were about to leave. The steak was cooked to the wrong degree (it was now a rare dish), and the side dishes were already cold. Unfortunately, the waitress didn't take care of the mistake quickly and correctly.

Prima restaurant, lekker eten. De spareribs waren erg lekker, alleen was een streng koud en het eten werd vrij snel opgediend. Wel een goede bediening.

I have eaten steak at world renowned steak houses in San Francisco and Chicago, and this rib eye was one of the best I’ve ever had. Absolutely delicious. Had the baked potato with it. Everything including the service was perfect!

My first visit was on Valentine's day, took my girlfriend for a brief time, she loved it more than I've anticipated, so we have a new yearly tradition to come here for every celebration. I love how relaxing and friendly the atmosphere is. Big thanks to the staff!

I'm very picky when it comes to places, my family recommended it several times and I checked the place. well, now it's my number one go to for occasional after-business meetings. I very very much recommend French/Italian cuisine, probably better than most restaurants I've been to in Netherlands!

Very friendly Staff members, plenty of options to modify dishes to your liking, I can't remember any other place that keeps the quality on regular basis. Every time I visit, they keep up the good work. 10/10! on my scale. I take my kids almost every weekend
