As a steak lover, I have never eaten one as delicious as the horse steak at Piet de Leeuw!

Terrible place, terrible staff, extremely rude, very limited menu & very over priced. My friend received a call and was on speaker for 5 seconds the waiter told him you are not in an internet cafe, extremely rude All i can say that the people were racist & had an issue as we are arabs

Really enjoyed our time here. The atmosphere was great, the food was delicious, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout. They stayed professional and calm even when the place got busy, which we really appreciated. Overall a very enjoyable experience and somewhere I’d happily recommend.

Welcoming atmosphere, friendly service, and very good food. We had a delicious schnitzel and a fillet steak, served with a side salad and fries. The sauces are delicious too!

So confused as to why this was in the lonely planet guide book and why it’s rated so highly. One vegetarian option and it was mid. The place is teeny tiny. Gets louder than you can even imagine especially at dinner time. It was just so forgettable. Staff was nice though.

Great atmosphere, incredibly busy. Portions are generous, and the meat is good. I had the "famous" horse steak. It was absolutely delicious, but it didn't live up to my expectations, as I'd now heard about it. Therefore, only 4 stars.

PDL is simply fantastic! A gem of a steakhouse. You have to imagine it's a truly original steakhouse. Old-fashioned cozy, courteous service, cold beer on tap, and a good red wine to go with a delicious steak.

Had a company dinner at Piet de Leeuw last night and it exceeded expectations on all fronts- we had a table inside and the atmosphere was stellar. I had the classic horse dish and it was one of the best dishes I’ve eaten in quite some time. The servers were extremely friendly and patient given our size and rowdiness. I’ll definitely visit again and would recommend this fine establishment to anyone looking for a nice, cozy, upscale dinner in Amsterdam.

Good food, very good service and a local vibe

Last night we had dinner with a group of nine. We were looking for a good steakhouse. After calling several restaurants, this one called back and said we could go due to a cancellation. We arrived promptly at 8:00 PM and were seated at two tables pushed together in the back by a stern waiter. And that wasn't the worst part; it got worse. Somewhere during dinner, he demanded the attention of the entire restaurant because of a birthday boy. He rudely shouted across the room and also loudly slammed a table twice. I was completely shocked; it happened right behind me. And while the main courses were being served, we were all told to pay attention when naming the different dishes. What a fool! If you don't have the Amsterdam gogme, don't even try to imitate it. The two waitresses – they were excellent – ​​tried to make the best of it, but it was beyond repair. The food was reasonably good, but the two vitello tonato were simply disgusting. We reported this, and it was duly removed from the bill. Incidentally, we were told she'd already noticed this when serving… but why put it on the table then? The steaks were delicious, and special mention goes to the garlic butter, which was delicious. Finally, the restaurant was terribly noisy; it was impossible to have a normal conversation. All in all, not a good experience, and we won't be back anytime soon. And as we're usually generous tippers, we kept our tips very small this time. Apologies to the waitresses for that.

The Amsterdam-style service is gone, replaced by arrogance and misplaced humor, and that ruins the atmosphere. The food, which is overpriced for the quality, doesn't improve matters. It's a shame, because it used to be one of my favorite places to eat.

A great "local" place that has been serving since 1949. Solid food great value and ambiance. I have eaten here several time over the last 30 years everytime I am in Amsterdam. My favorite meal is the Sole with esargot for an appetizer. Not fancy but lots of local color and hospitality Amsterdam style. Many locals eat here so reservations are a must as most locals stay all evening!

I really liked the place. The food is delicious, the service is top-notch. The snails taste great, like in Paris, only already cleaned. The steak is perfectly cooked. The fish is delicious. I advise everyone. It is better to reserve a table.

We had a great time; the place wasn't very crowded tonight, and we were able to enjoy the excellent music selection. The food was good, good quality (pork ribs and horse meat), and well-cooked. The lady who looked after our table was very friendly and helpful. It's not a touristy place. We highly recommend it.

Hade lite högre förväntningar då Jag googlade på bästa stället. Men nja åt snitzel och den va väldigt Fet. Mysig restaurang och inredning va mysig och trevlig servitris. Läget va centralt och lätt att hitta.

Vinimos aquí regularmente a lo largo de los años, para sentarnos en la terraza, tomar una copa y un buen filete. Esta vez no había terraza de la que hablar: 3 mesas entre coches aparcados y bicicletas. Pedimos filete (de caballo) con papas fritas, una victoria blanca y una cerveza pequeña. Una buena cosa es que sirven agua del grifo de forma gratuita. El filete no era el sabor y la calidad que esperábamos. Las patatas fritas y las bebidas estaban bien. Con una factura de 75 €, propina incluida, no valió la pena la experiencia. Lo sentimos, pero no volveremos

Great spot. No tourists. Fantastic ambience. I got the ribeye but it was like shoe leather. Would I go back, yes for the atmosphere and cold Heineken.

The place is typical for Dutch people, noisy so we decide to come back later but the management proved to be understanding (9.30pm), for them dinner finished a while ago. Excellent food, nice experience

We were supposed to eat here. The waiter was so unpleased when we arrived so we left immediately. It was on a guide book, but I do not recommend it. We did not try the food. We are in vacation, we want to see smiling people.

Old-fashioned pub. The focus is on substance rather than form. So super friendly, fast service and good quality food. You eat on wooden plates on pub tables and low light emitted by vintage lanterns. If you are looking for a place frequented by locals, eating typical dishes at a fair price for the place (on average 25/26 euros) is ok. 2 types of draft beer stop. In a city drowned in places for "tourists", a nice discovery.

Leuk restaurant met echte Hollandse kaart. Eten is prima. Ondanks dat er Hazes wordt gedraaid vind ik het geen typisch Amsterdams restaurant zoals velen dit denken. Die bestaan namelijk niet. Gewoon Nederlands en niets bijzonders. Qua eten een aanrader. Leuke bediening hoewel één ober een cursus 'Omgang met mensen' zou kunnen gebruiken.

We were there for dinner for a farewell party of an ex colleague. The place was sooo unbelievably loud that we could not hear each other. Other than that, amazing food!

I was here for my last dinner before returning home and I was totally mesmerised. With positive reviews, I booked it in advance as it’s always full on weekend. The ambience was astonishing. It offers a traditional Dutch menu and the horse steak is a must try!

The food was decent (main course better than the starter), but our experience was disappointing. We were asked to leave our table before ordering dessert because the next reservation was scheduled, which has never happened to us before. The restaurant was overcrowded and extremely noisy, making it difficult to enjoy our meal. There was barely any space to sit, and I struggled to cut my food because other guests were seated uncomfortably close—less than 30 cm away. Overall, the atmosphere was chaotic and did not allow for a pleasant dining experience.

For the best steak and other Amsterdam dishes, go to Piet de Leeuw. This is what I mean by old-fashioned steak with white casino bread that you can dip in the gravy. The location is an old favorite pub with very friendly Amsterdam staff, which I love as a former Amsterdammer.

A no-nonsense Amsterdam steakhouse. Coziness and friendliness come first here. The horse steak is highly recommended!

Great little restaurant that focuses on great quality food. We had the burger and were very happy with the choice. Fresh and great in taste. But the other food that we saw on the neighboring tables also looked really good. The atmosphere is quaint and small in size, but we still liked it. We will definitely reserve a table here the next time we visit Amsterdam.

Food was very good, we ordered burgers and ribeye. Service was ok and the place was really cosy. I was really disappointed with all those people in other tables shouting, yelling and laughing so loud.

Nuestra visita comenzó un poco preocupante ya que nuestra mesa no estaba lista (los comensales anteriores estaban llegando tarde) así que tuvimos que ir a un bar a la vuelta de la esquina durante 30 / 45 minutos. Una vez que volvimos fuimos muy bien atendidos por el personal amable y eficiente. La comida era excelente y grandes tamaños de porción, todos tuvimos una gran comida y las recomendaciones de vino eran geniales. Fue una comida encantadora llena y satisfactoria en un restaurante que obviamente era muy querido por los lugareños.

Piet de Leeuw is really for the oldies, a bit of a small place, but a nice glass of wine with a salad, steak and fries will do the oldies good.

10/10, came here after strong recommendation by my uncle who had visited a few years back. Our group had delicious horse steaks. The staff is friendly and funny. We also had fun with the music selection, a very nice dinner overall.

I came here with a friend based on google reviews, we came around 9PM. The waiter was super nice and friendly, the ambiance and vibes in the place were nice! He gave recommendations, and we ended up ordering the Beef Tenderloin steak with spicy gravy, and believe me, this was THE best steak I had in my life!! I travel alot and I tried steak all over the globe, the way it was cooked, the meat and the sauce, everything was top notch. Then we ordered the créme brûlée, another master piece!! Everything about this place was awesome, service, ambiance and food. I could return to Amsterdam again especially for it

Having returned from a tour of the centre, we tried this restaurant. Excellent quality products, very tender beef fillet and wonderful spicy ribs!!! Good good good The price for quality and quantity was good, within the norm.

Close to the center but not so touristy, very good and quickly prepared steak. The waitress Anja was really sweet. 🤭

Piet de Leeuw is een klassiek Amsterdams eetcafé met de uitstraling en inrichting van een bruin café. Typisch Amsterdams met André Hazes op de achtergrond. De kaart is redelijk gevarieerd, en de bediening persoonlijk en attent. De zaak liep in de loop van de tijd goed vol, en dat heeft een belangrijke oorzaak: het heef gewoon een heel goed restaurant. Het eten smaakte zonder meer voortreffelijk. De Tournedos van het paard was heerlijk mals, en smaakte heel erg goed. Je voelt je er thuis en welkom.

I ate here solo after I was stranded at Schipol by my favourite Dutch airline. An absolute gem of a restaurant in a beautiful residential street, excellent service from what I presume is the third generation owner and wonderful food. Snails, steak and creme brulee washed down with plenty of pinot grigio and genever. Very reasonable prices. Highly recommended. Will be back.

Slightly expensive but very delicious traditional horse tenderloin, perhaps the best in Amsterdam. Had good expectations going in and they exceeded it, the tenderloin was tender (no shock there) and very flavorful. The accompanying fries were average, but the main more than made up for it. Lovely and quick service too!

The food at Piet de Leeuw is always good, but the atmosphere that the staff manages to create takes it to a higher level. 10/10

The best food we had in Amsterdam on our three day stay, the staff was extremely friendly and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The food was good, simple but nice tasting. I loved the mayo, the staff even provided suggestions of various mayos I could buy to bring home.

I visited here after one year, I woke up this morning with dreaming horse steak with gorgonzola sauce for my dinner, actually I was dreaming about it since yesterday. However! They stopped Gorgonzola sauce!!!!! Impossible!!! Make the steak great again with Gorgonzola! Of course steak itself is still great, but, I want to treat myself with that sauce!!!!!!! Please!

I was in this restaurant for dinner. It was rather good, but we waited too long for our food. Besides, I asked to exclude bell peppers from the vegetables plate and still there were bell peppers The steaks were really good

Ristorante tipico a pochi passi dal centro. Comodo e vicino al nostro Hotel Prinsengracht. Pietanze tipiche e ottimi filetti, serviti nel loro sugo di cottura. Patatine fritte notevoli. Tavolini piccoli ma sufficienti. Personale molto gentile.

The food was good. The portion of meat for many may seem small for the price. Served with potatoes and salad to share.
